    September 2014

Dear Members and Friends of the St. Peters

    Family:

On July 24-25 several of us from St. Petershad the privilege of attending the 2014Convocation of the North AmericanLutheran Church (the national convocationof our church) at The Citadel in Charleston,South Carolina. Pastors, lay members, andguests brought the total in attendance to677 folks from all around North Americaand the world.

This was without a doubt one of the mostjoyful and spiritual church gatherings I havebeen to in a long time. These were orthodoxLutherans who worshiped enthusiasticallyand reveled in doing mission, ministry, andservice in the Lords name. This is a church

that takes great joy in partnering with avariety of already established Christianorganizations to do Gods work all around

the world. We may be a denomination thatis relatively small in numbers, but it isamazing how much ministry our church hasbeen able to accomplish in such a shortamount of time.

You can go to the North American LutheranChurch website (thenalc.org) and click on2014 Convocation video near the top of the

screen and then click on the blue link towatch recorded video of the events in

Charleston. Recordings of all sessions areavailable. You will want to choose theevents on July 24 and 25.

Next years NALC Convocation will be held

August 13-14 at the Dallas/Fort WorthAirport Hyatt Hotel. I hope that some of youwill begin now to make plans to attend. Itwill be well worth your time and effort.

I assure you that you will come away

knowing that the North American LutheranChurch is a Spirit-led, forward movingChurch that seeks to live out Christs

commands to make disciples and be aservant church. You will come away joyfuland thankful for being part of such a churchas this.

In joyful partnership with you in Christs

    service,

    Pastor Leon A. Rawl

    STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on theuncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to dogood, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for

themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.1 Timothy 6:17-19 (ESV)

The world teaches us that we should strive to accumulate as much as we possibly can - more money, bigger houses, better cars, newer electronic devices, cooler toys... The list goes on and on. But often wefind that the more material riches we accumulate, the less satisfied we are.

A survey by Boston College entitled, "Joys and Dilemma of Wealth," discovered what the writer of 1Timothy already knew - money does notbuy happiness. The study found that the ultra wealthy (thosewith fortunes of at least $25 million) are among the most miserable people in the world!

It turns out that happiness has more to do with howyou spend your money than it does with how muchmoney you have. Experts consulted in the Boston College survey found that people get more happiness

by spending money on others than they do by spending it on themselves. You can read more of thisarticle at http://abcnews.go.com/Business/concerns-super-rich-wealth-bring-happiness/story?id=13167578.

What brings true happiness, according to the first letter to Timothy, is not being materially rich but beingrich in good works. God, the One in whom we hope, has graciously provided us with everything we

need to enjoy this life. But the joy of these blessings cannot be found in using them to pursue ones ownpleasure. The joy of Gods abundant blessings can only be found in giving them away. It is bygenerously and happily sharing our riches with others, that we become truly wealthy.

    OUR CALL TO MISSION

Q: Is God calling me to serve others in mycommunity and abroad?A: YES!!!

In the Great Commission, Jesus, ourTeacher, Savior, and Lord tells His disciples to Gotherefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them toobserve all that I have commanded you. (Matthew28:19)

As baptized believers of Jesus Christ, weare all His disciples. And as His disciples , everyone of us is called, authorized, and commissionedto share the gospel of Jesus Christ both locally andglobally. That means YOU!

Q:Why does God call me to go and m a k edisciples anyway?A: So that all people will know His love!

In the letter to the Romans, St. Paul, thegreatest Christian missionary of all time, tells usthat, ...everyone who calls on the name of theLord will be saved. How then will they call on himin whom they have not believed? And how are theyto believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someonepreaching? And how are they to preach unlessthey are sent? (Romans 10:13-15a)

We, who are Christs disciples, are also Hisapostles. Jesus calls and sends each of us out intothe world to proclaim His gospel in both word anddeed. He does this so that all people in the world

will have a chance to hear the good news, besaved, and become His disciples too.

Q:Do I really have to gosomewhere to makedisciples?A:YES!

Throughout His ministry, Jesus was on themove. Just look at how much going and comingJesus does in the first few chapters of St. MarksGospel! Jesus always seems to be traveling

somewhere, meeting and serving people along theway. Jesus ministry shows us that our God is notstatic. He is dynamic and constantly moving in ourmidst.

And because we are His disciples, Jesuscalls us to come and follow Him (Matthew 4:19,)wherever He leads us. You may be called to travelhalfway across the world to share Gods love withpeople in another country, or you may be calledsimply to go to your telephone to share Gods lovewith a friend whos going through a tough time.Jesus doesnt call every disciple to go far, but Hedoes expect that we follow wherever He leads!

Q:Cant I just stay home and just write a checkinstead?A:You could, but...

Jesus told his disciples, If anyone wouldcome after me, let him deny himself and take uphis cross and follow me. For whoever would save

his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for mysake will find it. (Matthew 16:24-25)

Discipleship is more than coming toworship, studying scriptures, and giving money tothe church. These things are vitally important, butdisciples who are willing to follow Jesus whereverHe leads will strengthen their faith and discover thejoys of an even fuller and more abundant life. When we trust our Lord enough to follow Himanywhere, entrusting our whole life to His leading, then we are truly alive in Christ!

Q:Are you ready to trust Jesusand follow wherever He leads?A: ...

The first disciples dropped everything tofollow Jesus (Matthew 4:19-23). They had no ideawhat it meant to fish for men, but they had faithenough to follow Jesus and find out!

Opportunities for mission abound in ourcommunity and around the world. Whatever yourinterests and abilities, God has a place for you tolove and serve others in His name. Think and prayabout where God may be calling you...

    Listen... What do you hear?...

Could God be calling you to love and serve our neighbors in another country?

Come to aMission Trip Interest Meeting

Wednesday, Sept. 3rdfrom 7:30-8:30 pmin the Office Conference Room.

Meet others who may be hearing Gods call, and together we will begin discerning where and howHe might be calling us to serve in His name.
