receives a backpack, if you take it in its totality — the 365 days each year, the 24 hours in each day, the 60 minutes in each hour, and the 60 seconds in each minute — you find that most of living is routine and fairly mundane. For example, how many minutes per day do you spend doing whatever your job requires of you; or taking care of your basic needs like eating, sleeping, fixing meals, etc.; or managing your finances? God made us in such a way that doing these routines is expected by Him. But what about the non-routine areas of life? For instance, how many minutes per day do you spend letting other people know they are loved by God and important to you; or getting to know God better and loving Him more; or telling others

Dear Church Family, Daily living presents many hard challenges, difficult questions and more than this, heavy-duty stress. And though culture has changed dramatically over the years, LIFE hasn’t. Years go by, but life problems often remain the same. This was true for the people who lived while our Lord was here on the earth. They too were harried, frustrated, over-burdened and needing help.

Although life does have some special moments, like the smile on a child’s face when he

the Good News of salvation in Christ; or building close loving relationships with your family, or reaching out to those in need? The more we insert these non-routine acts into our routine lives, the more effective we will be in helping others pursue Jesus Christ. My challenge to us all this Fall is to invest ourselves in the pursuit of helping others become fully devoted followers of Christ by filling our routine lives with as much of this kind of non-routine activity as possible. Why? Because life is too short and people are too important to not pursue such a goal. Sincerely,

In John 6, we see some of these people taking time off from their normal routine so that they could be with Jesus and hear His teaching. In verse 2, we see them following Jesus because they saw Him performing miracles and they needed some miracles in their own lives. Who doesn’t? In verses 5-11, we see that our Lord was concerned for their physical welfare. They had no food. Out of love, He performed the miracle of feeding thousands of

these hungry people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 small fish. What a powerful God—what a loving God! He taught the people many things and they marveled at His wisdom, but the spiritual truths of His teaching eluded them. It reached their minds

but not their hearts.

This date has been tentatively selected for a rather difficult hike that is being considered. We are hoping to accomplish an evening hike of Mt. Baldy, lit by a full moon and a hands-free headlamp. If we were to sit down as a church and take a look at how we are

doing at being church, what measurements would we use? The TFB mission

statement, the 2010 theme, the church constitution, and various New

Testament passages come to mind, but these are difficult to measure. I would

suggest a rubric (an evaluation tool) based on the description of the church in

the Nicene Creed (AD 381) and on a three-fold understanding of our task as

church (know the story, be the people, expand the kingdom).

We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. and drive to Palm Springs to once again enjoy the Palm Springs Follies. The Crystals, widely regarded as one of the defining "girl groups" of the 1960s, will be performing. We will get back to TFB at around 8:00 p.m. The cost for this trip is $55.00 per person.

Edna Potter was the force behind the Seniors & Friends Ministry for over 20 years. She and Ralph worked hard planning, making reservations, and providing transportation for many fun one-day outings for our TFB Seniors and their friends. Overnight trips and cruises were also well-attended and greatly enjoyed and aided in the development of many great friendships through the years. For each cruise, Edna spent hours on newsletters that were given out on each day of a cruise to assure that “her” travelers were kept informed of daily activities. Each booklet was replete with the Daily Bread, jokes, anecdotes and puzzles for the cruisers to enjoy. In recent years, Ralph & Edna had passed on the baton of leadership of the Seniors to others. But being the travelers that they were, who loved the sights and sounds of new places, they continued to attend and enjoy all the outings that they could. Edna is now enjoying all the awesome sights and sounds of her new home in Heaven.

Missionary Praying, Part 1

This month and next we would like to encourage “Missionary Praying.” Each week in the bulletin you see the name or ministry of a few Global Outreach teams that we support. Do you wonder how or what you should pray for? In Romans 10:14-15, Paul talks about 5 groups of people we can pray for that are active in the global outreach process – senders, goers, hearers, and believers and worshipers. We will focus on the senders and the goers this month. As a sending body, we should keep these teams in our heart and not forget the problems and needs of the ministry teams. We can pray that they will have favor with the local government/tribal leaders and that God’s Word will go unhindered from reaching the people. May you have a genuine concern for those who have been called to go and keep them in your prayers. The goers are men and women with problems and issues just like us only they are in a foreign land or committed to a ministry to reach others. They may travel frequently to do the job they need to do, so travel and health mercies are needed. At times new languages, traditions, foods and homes must be learned and accommodated. Pray for protection, encouragement, passion and God’s voice to lead them. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go. I will counsel you with my eye

upon you” (Psalm 32:8).

This ministry sends shoeboxes filled with gifts to needy children around the world. You can help by filling a shoebox with small new toys, hard candy, hygiene items (toothpaste/brush, low-scent soap in separate zip-lock bag), school supplies, etc. You may pick up an empty, wrapped shoebox in the patio or you may wrap it yourself. You can also pick up a brochure giving details about what to put in your box and what not to put in. Samaritan’s Purse is asking for $7 per box to cover shipping costs.

Later, when the Lord changed locations (vv. 22-27), they followed Him again. Jesus told them plainly that the only reason they were following Him was to get more physical food. What they really needed was the spiritual nourishment He was freely offering them. Sadly, they still did not comprehend what He was saying and walked away from God. When Jesus asked His disciples (the 12) if they, too, would walk away from Him, one of them, Peter, responded with an astonishing statement. It’s found in verses 68 and 69: “Lord, to Whom shall we go? You alone have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Wow! Peter was right on with his answer. Now, how did he come to understand what the Lord was saying while the thousands who left earlier hadn’t? Peter allowed the Holy Spirit to minister to His open heart and in so doing, he was brought to the point of belief. As he carefully listened to the Lord, what he heard turned into faith: “We believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” It is amazing what happens to us and in our lives when we take the time to really listen to the Lord. My prayer is that we all will be enriched as we spend time alone with Him in prayer and in His Word. May this be our heart-felt desire before Him today. So thankful for Him,
