“News for St. Peter’s family and friends”

    Dear Friends in Christ,

On Sunday, May 15, we celebrated theRites of Confirmation for five of our wonderfulyoung adults. As part of our worship that dayCaroline Bedenbaugh, Martin Craps, EmmaGrace Jordan, Mallory Nichols, and Garrett Smithpublically affirmed the faith into which they werebaptized, faith in Jesus Christ as their personalLord and Savior. It was a joyous occasion forthose of us participating as we were reminded ofthe promises God made to all of us in our ownbaptism, and of the pledge we made to God atour confirmation.

At our baptism Almighty God liberated usfrom sin and death by joining us to the death andresurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. At ourbaptism—we who were born in sin—Godrecreated us in Christ and made us inheritors ofeternal life. At our baptism our gracious God, bywater and the Word, made us members of theChurch which is the body of Christ. As MartinLuther wrote in the Small Catechism, “It(baptism) brings about forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the devil, and gives

eternal salvation to all who believe it, as theWord and promise of God declare.”  All of this God promises us in the Sacrament of HolyBaptism, and God keeps His promises!

Confirmation is our opportunity torespond to these marvelous promises of God. Atour confirmation we responded to God withwords making our pledge back to God. Do you

recall those words you pledged to God? Have

you thought about them lately? How are youdoing in keeping your pledge? Good? Not sogood? Don’t even remember what you pledged? It is important (and a blessing!) to remember thepower of the Good News of Jesus Christ! Evenright now we can remember that God throughChrist forgives us of all our sins, including thesins related to not even remembering all of thepromises we made to God at our confirmation. Moreover, God’s Holy Spirit will fill us with adesire to circle back around to those pledges, recommit ourselves to those pledges, and willempower us to strive to keep them! And whatwere those promises? Oh yes, in answer to thequestion, “Do you intend to continue in thecovenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: tolive among God’s faithful people, to hear hisWord and share in his supper, to proclaim thegood news of God in Christ through word anddeed, to serve all people, following the exampleof our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice andpeace in all the earth?”. We answered, “I do, andI ask God to help and guide me.”

I pray we will all take this pledge we

made to God seriously, and that we will ASKGOD DAILY how He wants us to LIVE TODAY.

God loves you, and so do I,

    Pastor ill

    Stewardship Thoughts

    The Law of Proportionate

    Participation

This writing comes from the 14th Chapter of thebook “The 33 Laws of Stewardship” written by

    Dave Sutherland and Kirk Nowery.

    God’s provision dictates the believer’sproportion.

Don’t worry about what you have or don’t

have to give. The Law of ProportionateProvision is a reassuring truth of Scripturebecause it eliminates the pressure of thinkingabout what we have or don’t have to give.Relying upon the Lord and depending upon Himas our source, we grow in grace as we give. In theprocess, giving becomes a therapeutic experience,

for as we die to self we come alive in faith.Give in proportion to everything you have

received. Proportionate participation in thework of God involves much more than money.Whatever God has given you, in whatevermeasure, is to be dedicated to him. Your talents, your abilities, your material wealth, your time – all are resources from which you can give.Deny the dominance of worldly thinking.

Worldly attitudes emphasize me and mine, andthey can suck us into a whirlpool of obsessions. In 1 John 2:15, John the Apostle cautioned, “Do

not love the world or anything in the world. Ifanyone loves the world, the love of the Father isnot in him.” As believers in Jesus Christ, we

belong to a different universe. Our citizenship isin heaven, and if we act as if our citizenship is inthis corrupt world, we lose sight and we lose thefullness of God’s blessing.God will provide. That’s a certainty. And the

proportion of His provision defines theproportion of our giving.

St. Peter’s Presents... HANDS OF HELP; HANDS OF HOPE

Reaching out to give help and hope through flood recovery volunteerteams

Beginning this summer, St. Peter’s will be offering our Scout Hut as a volunteer flood recovery

team host site. Out-of-state congregations and organizations will be working with the Long

Term Recovery Group in sending teams of flood recovery volunteers to work in the Midlands.

Our congregation will offer these volunteers a place to stay, warm showers (using the NALC-

provided shower trailer), hearty meals, and our famous St. Peter’s hospitality; but

we need your help to make this ministry a success!

A donation campaign is underway to provide supplies for

visiting flood recovery volunteer teams, and we’ve made it easy for you to help!

Just look for the Tree of Hope in the Parish Life Center.

Hanging on this tree are the items we need to host our visiting volunteers. Some of

these needs are one-time purchases and some will be on-going needs as

    different groups come and go.

If you are interested in working with some of these visiting volunteer teams or in forming our

own St. Peter’s volunteer team to help flood survivors rebuild, please email your area(s) of

interest and/or expertise and available dates to Pastor Paulette at [email protected]. May

God bless you for sharing in this ministry and for giving hands of help and hands of hope.

“Our hope for you is unshaken,

for we know that as you share in our sufferings,

you will also share in our comfort.” - 2 Corinthians 1:7
