Dear Members and Friends of the St. Peter’s

Family:

July is Vacation Bible School time at St.

Peter’s. This year’s Bible School is

scheduled for July 13-17, and as always,

we’ll have classes for ALL ages from the

youngest children to adults. Now I know

that a lot of adults think Bible School is just

for children (just as they think Sunday

School is just for children). But the truth is ,

our Christian Education should be a life long

process. There is always more that we can

learn from the Bible and more that we can

learn about God.

That’s why I hope all the adults in our

congregation will join us in the Sanctuary

each night of Bible School for our adult

class.

We’ll gather for a Bible Study entitled “I AM,

Revealed: Knowing God on a First-Name

Basis.” This is an Old Testament study and

will take a look at God as Creator, Provider,

Healer, Watcher, Protector, Guide, Savior,

and King.

I hope you will plan to join us each night of

Vacation Bible School. We’ll enjoy good

fellowship and food at 6:00 PM (5:30 PM on

Sunday) in the Parish Life Center followed

by classes from 6:30—8:30 PM. See you

there!

Save the Date– Annual Missions Market— This year’s Mission Market is set for Saturday, November 15. We need each and every one of you to be a part of helping with the market. To volunteer, please see Clyde Sanders or call/email 359-7171 or sanders@sprynet.com. We

can use all kinds of talent before, during, and after the market. We raised over $14,000 last year and four organizations benefitted from our efforts. Let’s do that again this year, and we can with YOU!

Confirmation— Confirmation marks the completion of our congregation’s program of confirmation ministry. It is not graduation, but rather the acceptance of greater responsibility in the church by these who were made members of the church in Baptism. On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, six of our youth affirmed their baptismal faith and made a covenant to continue growing in faith and made a covenant to continue growing in faith and service at St. Peter’s. New Pictorial Directory—Council has authorized a new pictorial directory for our congregation later this year. We will self-publish the directory as we did last time. Larry James has again graciously agreed to do the photography. We will need some folks who can help organize this project and assist with the photography sessions. If you can help, please contact Larry James or Pastor Rawl. Pictures will be taken in August.

The church office will be closed for the Independence Day holiday on Friday. July 4.

The North American Lutheran Church Convocation this year is at the Citadel in Charleston , South Carolina July 24-25. “Standing With...to Withstand” is the theme for the 2014 Convocation of the North American Lutheran Church. The theme is based on Ephesians 6:10-20, where St. Paul describes the whole armor of God, encouraging followers of Jesus to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day…” The Convocation will focus on the persecution of Christians throughout the world, and our hope to “stand with” these disciples as they witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in spite of opposition and, in some places, suffering. The Convocation will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, and conclude at 5:00 p.m. Friday on the campus of The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina.

What will take place at the 2014 Convocation?

Reports and updates about the life and ministry of the NALC, the establishment of the North American Lutheran Seminary , the progress of our application for membership in LWF, and our discipleship initiative in partnership with the Navigators;

Elections to NALC Executive Council and Court of Adjudication and NALS Board of Regents;

Keynote presentation by Robert Brock of Voice of the Martyrs, a ministry dedicated to supporting persecuted Christians around the world.;

Welcome ecumenical guests and receive greetings from Bishop Roland Gustafsson and Rev. Bengt Birgersson, General Secretary of Swedish (Lutheran) Mission Province, who are “Bringing the Gospel Back to Sweden”, and from IKBG (International Christian Network), an ecumenical confessional association headquartered in Germany;

Discipleship workshops; Displays introducing NALC missions and

ministries, together with opportunities to

meet with NALC folks from across North America;

Thursday evening traditional Carolina-style barbeque hosted by the Carolinas Mission District at The Citadel’s Isle of Palms Beach House on the Atlantic Coast;

Friday morning Festive Service of Holy Communion in the air-conditioned Summerall Chapel, with Bishop Gustafsson as Preacher.

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Cards— Doughnut cards are for sale for $12. Proceeds will go toward the Mission Market. See Lester or Jonette Cutter for a card.

Noisy Offering— Our next noisy offering is Sunday, June 29. Bring your change to drop in the cans the children will bring out into the congregation during the chi ldren’s sermon.

Proceeds from the noisy offering are given to fight hunger in the world.

Homemade Ice Cream and Pound Cakes Needed— Our kick off for our Vacation Bible School will include homemade ice cream and pound cake. If you are willing to provide either please contact Darla Jennings or Susan Rawl. Our kick off is Sunday, July 13th.

Unable to Come to Worship due to physical or other problems? If so, Pastor Rawl will gladly visit you in your home and bring you the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Just call the church office at 359-2470 to request a visit.

Are you ready for a Jungle Safari?

Then don’t miss the 2014 Vacation Bible School, Sunday, July 13-Thursday, July 17. On Sunday, we’ll start at 5:30 with dinner and activities will last from 6:30-8:00. Monday through Thursday, we’ll begin with dinner at 6:00 with activities from 6:30-8:00.

Kids will search for treasure as they learn that God is Creator, Provider, Protector, Savior and King. We’ll have classes, music, crafts, great food and, of course, some really cool surprises. Check out the menu: Sunday—Richey’s famous Corn Dogs, Hamburgers, Fries, Pound Cake and Homemade Ice Cream Monday—Spaghetti, Salad, and Dessert Tuesday—Ham, Brown Rice, Corn, Slaw, Biscuits, and Ice Cream Treats Wednesday—Pizza, Salad, and Dessert Thursday—Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Cheese, Green Beans, Rolls, and Ice Cream As always, we’ll have a Mission Project. This year, the mission is very close to our hearts. Our missionary, Matthew Riak, is the founder and principal of St. Luke’s Theological College in South Sudan. In recent months, civil war has forced the college to close temporarily. Over 1 million citizens of South Sudan were forced to flee to safety. Matthew felt called to do something to help the South Sudanese refugees. Under Matthew’s leadership, St. Luke’s has launched a new mission: St. Luke’s CORE (Child Outreach in Refugee Empowerment) in Uganda. Here’s what is happening in the refugee camp:

The Adjumani Refugee Camp is home to over 50,000 South Sudanese in a camp built for 400.

Basic resources such as shelter, food and water are in very short supply. 85% of the refugees are women and children. Many of the children have been separated from their parents and families and are at great

risk. Matthew believes that education is also one of the critical, unmet needs. In response, St. Luke’s CORE is building a Mission Center in the camp which will include a school for elemen-tary age children. Here’s how we can help. Each night of Vacation Bible School, we will collect an offering. At the end of the week we will send our total offering to help finish construction of the Mission Center and provide resources for the refugee children of Adjumani.

St. Peter’s Service Committee, Thank you so much for all your hard work in selling Luminaries for the 2014 Relay for Life Event. You saved me hours and I appreciate everything you did! We had the most Luminaries of any team at Relay and several people commented how pretty and meaningful they were.

Gratefully, Rebecca Jacobson Executive Director Columbia Family Shelter A New Road 32 Coping with Grief Seminar—October 3-5, 2014 A weekend of support for men and women who have been widowed within the past three years is being offered at Kinard Conference Center (Camp Kinard) near Batesburg-Leesville, SC on October 3-5, 2014. A New Road 32 is sponsored by the Ministry Team for Outreach of the SC Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church and is assisted in funding by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, former participants and friends. The seminar is designed for participants to receive help with the transition to a new way of living. Professional counselors and presenters will be available with information on financial and coping skills. Ruth Strait-Ellis, Grief and Trauma Counselor, will speak on “Keys to Coping for Adults and Children” and other grief related topics. James Caulder, Informed Decisions, Inc., will share information on Social Security and Financial issues. Attorney Matthew J. Myers will present a session on Wills, Trusts, and Probate. The Reverend Tommy Lineberger, Jr., Head Chaplain, will present a session on “The Healing Element of Sharing Our Stories.” Jane and Craig Duensing will share “Songs for the Journey.” The Reverend James Laurence will moderate a series of panel discussions that include young adults, who at various ages, experienced the death of a parent. Another panel consists of team members discussing “Plan B for My Life.” Other chaplains include the Reverends Pattie Sue Burton-Pye, Kathy E. Harris, Henry M. Moody, and Karen K. Young. Dee Snelgrove Camp and Ann Simon (co-facilitators) and Carol Ann Green (founder) are assisted by many Team Members who have attended previous A New Road weekends.
