Dear Members and Friends of the St. Peter’s Family: After almost twenty-one years, this will be my last letter in The Proclaimer as your Pastor. These years have gone by incredibly fast for me. I have been blessed in more ways than I could ever express to have had the great privilege and honor of serving as the Pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. You have truly been a blessing to me and my family all these years. While I am very much looking forward to my retirement and already have big plans for my yard and garden and a big stack of books I want to read, at the same time Susan and I feel a great sadness at leaving our role as pastor and pastor’s wife with you. You are very dear to us and we will deeply miss the joy of serving alongside you in this capacity. Many of you have kindly expressed a desire that Susan and I continue to worship at St. Peter’s. Perhaps on occasion we will, and perhaps eventually we can do so on a regular basis—but not now. I do not want to interfere in any way in the call process nor in the ministry of your new pastors. After retirement, we will visit and worship in other congregations until we see where the Spirit leads us. As my retirement date comes closer, I realize that there are many things that I will miss in parish ministry. It saddens me to know that I will not be able to participate in weddings, baptisms, or
funerals or make hospital visits or do other pastoral acts or duties at St. Peter’s. It is the privilege and the prerogative of your new pastors to share these times with you. Allow your new pastors to minister to you and share in your life as you have given me that honor all these years. Allow your new pastors to minister to you and with you and love you and care for you as you have so graciously allowed me to do all these years at St. Peter’s. And know that even though I will no longer be your pastor, I will continue to pray for this congregation and I will continue to love you and care about you. There are no words to express how grateful Susan and I are for the joy of serving with you these past 21 years. Very few pastors are ever as blessed as I have been to serve in a congregation of such faithful, dedicated, willing servants of the Lord. The dynamic lay leadership, the willingness to serve, the faithful stewardship, the commitment to excellence in everything you do – that just doesn’t exist in most other congregations. I’ve often wondered how I got so fortunate as to serve here with and among you all these years and I thank God for this blessing. You have blessed us in so many ways and you have truly been a blessing in our lives – and you always will be. With grateful hearts and our deepest gratitude and love,
Pastor Rawl and Susan

Thank you, as well, for the beautiful, white stole and pectoral cross. I will treasure them always. I am looking forward to a wonderful and exciting first year as your associate pastor, and I know that God has some awesome plans for us as we continue in His ministry together. STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS
Therefore do not be anxious...But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:31a,33 (ESV)
We serve a God who knows our every need. Before we can begin to form the words to ask for help, before we are ready to turn to the Lord in prayer, long before we are even aware that we are in need, God knows. He knows that we need physical essentials like food, water, clothing, and shelter. He also knows that we need spiritual essentials like love, hope, assurance, and peace. Our God knows our needs, and He graciously provides for all of them – even the needs we do not yet know ourselves. This month, as we bid farewell to our senior pastor and his wife, many of us also say goodbye to a gentle leader, a compassionate listener, a patient teacher, a wise counselor, a gifted men-tor, and a beloved friend. Our hearts rejoice for Pastor and Susan as they begin a new chapter in their lives, but our hearts are also heavy with sorrow. Their absence from this congregation will be for us, a great loss. God knows, and God provides. Just as He has so faithfully done all these many two hundred and thirty five years here at St. Peter’s, God will continue to provide for us all that we need. Therefore, do not grieve without hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13) and do not be anxious about anything. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” Our Lord will take care of everything else.

The Call Committee has been formed and unanimously approved at a called meeting of the council on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm, January 4, 2015. The required 6 member call committee will consist of the following members: Monroe Lindler, Clyde Sanders, Toby Porth, Landis Sandel, Larry James and Tommy Stone as council representative. This committee will formally meet to-gether in the near future at a date to be determined to begin the call process as outlined by the NALC. At that time a committee chairperson will be elected and the congregation will be kept in-formed as the process unfolds. We would ask that you keep this call committee, its members, and the process in your daily prayers.
At the December 14th council meeting, Larry James informed the council members that the Assistant to the Bishop for Ministry and Ecumenism for the NALC, The Rev. Dr. David Wendel had given him the name of Pastor Carl A. Voges who could serve as Interim Pastor upon Pastor Rawl’s retirement. Pastor Voges came to meet with the council at 4:00pm on December 28th. Below is the biography that was provided to all the council members. The council met again on January 4th at 4:00pm to approve a compensation package as presented by the four council members on the Stewardship and Finance Committee and at that time the council unanimously voted to hire Pastor Voges as the Interim Pastor. He will begin serving our Church after Pastor Rawl’s retirement.
Biography of Pr. Carl A. Voges, STS, Vicar Pr. Voges is a graduate of Valparaiso University (IN, 1962), Concordia Theological Seminary (IL, 1966) and Princeton theological Seminary (NJ, 1969). He was ordained in July, 1967, and began exercising the Church’s ministry at Saint Thomas Lutheran Church, Englishtown, NJ. In May, 1978, he accepted the call to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC, and served there for twenty eight years. He retired from the full-time ministry in April, 2006. He and his wife, Joan, have been gifted with three daughters and sons-in-laws (Elizabeth and Jens Rosinski, Columbia, SC; Catherine and Scot Manchester, Little Rock, AR; Susan and Wayne Viar, Dacula, GA) along with six grandchildren. Since retirement and for extended time periods, he has served Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Augusta, GA; Greenwood Lutheran Church, Greenwood, SC; and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, West Ashley, SC He has also presided and preached for a number of parishes in GA, NC, and SC. He and his wife are members of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Greenville, SC. Since December, 2005 he has been serving as the Vicar (assistant to the Senior) of the Society of the Holy Trinity (STS). The Society supports Lutheran pastors from more than ten denominations (in the United States and Canada) in remaining faithful to the promises spoken at their ordina-tions. He visits Society-related parishes on occasional weekends for preaching and teaching while participating in STS chapter retreats throughout North America. He is currently working on a campaign to raise contributions for the Society’s Endowment Fund and to help the Society estab-lish a Center for Parish Ministry.
