“News for St. Peter’s family and friends”

Dear Family and Friends of St. Peter’s,

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you

think of November? For me it is Thanksgiving.

Paul writing to the people of Philippi said, “I thank

my God in all my remembrance of you, always in

every prayer of mine with joy, thankful for your

partnership in the gospel from the first day until

now. And I am sure that he who began a good

work in you will bring it to completion at the day of

Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel thus about

you all, for you are all partakers with me of grace

(Philippians 1:3-7a).”

God has so richly blessed us here at St. Peter’s. We

only have to think of those who have gone before

and led us to this point in our church’s ministry. As

such, we will remember those who have joined the

church triumphant this past year on Sunday,

November 1, All Saints Day.

Giving thanks and praise to God for their life and

direction, our congregation will seek the guidance

of the Holy Spirit as we move toward issuing a call

to our next Senior Pastor. Thanks be to God for

guiding our Call Committee in their search and

leading us to this point.

Our thankfulness will continue as we celebrate our

praise of God and all His blessings bestowed upon

us at our Thanksgiving Eve service. Hopefully

each of us will take some time to reflect on the

many blessings we have received this past year

when we gather together for our Thanksgiving Eve

meal and around our family tables for food,

fellowship and celebration.

As we come to the end of November we will begin

the season of Advent. This time of preparation for

the coming of the Christ child, will afford us the

opportunity to praise God for the past, and open our

eyes to his coming again. This very idea of praise

and anticipation fits well with a cycle of

thanksgiving and looking forward to receiving the

continued blessings from God.

May our time of thanksgiving be not just one

month of the year, but every day as we live and

serve God through our church and our

neighborhoods.

New Members—We welcome to St.

joined our congregation on October 25. Keith

comes to us by letter of transfer from Zion

Lutheran Church and Ashley by affirmation

of faith from State Street Baptist Church in

West Columbia. Take some time to get to

know these new members and invite to be a

part of the ministries we share.

Worship Notes

Advent - Advent begins November 29. - During Advent we will have Compline services with Holy Communion in place of our regular Wednesday evening services. Compline is a service for prayer at the close of the day and reflects the contemplative and penitent nature of the Advent season. All four WOW Compline services will be held in the PLC at 6:30pm. Even if you don’t usually attend WOW services, please come out and enjoy this special time of preparation for the coming of Christ.

Christmas - Christmas Eve services will be held at 5:30 and 10:00pm. - This year we will offer a simple Lessons and Carols service with Holy Communion on Christmas morning at 10:00 am.

Stewardship Thoughts The Law of Paradoxical

Participation

This writing comes from the 7th Chapter of the book “The 33 Laws of Stewardship” written by Dave Sutherland and Kirk Nowery. The richest generosity often comes out of the deepest poverty. How shall we live by this important spiritual law? It comes down to several priorities: Respond to need, not to pressure. The generous giver is prompted to give by seeing a need and being touched by it. There may be an emotional element, but the primary motive is spiritual in nature. Giving is never to be done out of pressure or compulsion because it’s a matter of grace, not law. We are to give because we want to give, love to give and are grateful we can give. Have an open heart and an open hand. Openness is willingness, and nothing pleases God more than a heart that willingly yields to Him and a hand that willingly gives to Him. If one claims to have an open heart but is not willing to have an open hand, something is amiss, for the two should be inseparable. Be a river, not a reservoir. Believers are the channels, not containers. God’s love and grace are to flow through us, not be held in us. As stewards, our compelling desire must be to constantly give and give and give as the river of God’s blessings courses through our lives. A Message from the Educational Ministry Committee— Imagine following Jesus along the road, listening in on His conversations and learning the lessons He taught in the holy places through Bethlehem, Samaria, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Caesarea, and beyond. Imagine sitting with Jesus beside a well with a lonely woman in Samaria, meeting in the darkness with a Jerusalem Pharisee searching for truth, befriending a group of fishermen with a sea of false expectations, and returning with Him to a hometown tragically ready to reject Him and the announcement of His kingdom. By attending Sunday School, we study and learn about Jesus’ earthly life as He came to us as God and man and how He taught the early Christians--Mary and Joseph and the disciples--to follow in his footsteps and to reap the rewards of our Heavenly home. What could be a more exciting journey than to study God’s word and then apply it to our lives in love and service at St. Peter’s. We challenge each of you to “Walk with Jesus”. We hope that you will join us in this journey by attending Sunday School. Imagine how this journey can enrich your life. Offering Envelopes— If you do not currently have offering envelopes and would like a box for 2016 or if you would like to have offering envelopes for your children in 2016 please email Amber at [email protected] or call the church office by November 15.

Newberry College Jazz Band will play at St. Peter’s on Sunday, November 15. Dinner, sponsored by Lutheran Men, will be served at 6:00 PM and the band will play at 7:00 PM. Invite your family and friends.

It’s time to order your poinsettias! We must have your order by Sunday, November 8. No poinsettia orders will be accepted after that day. Plants are $12.00 each and will have 4-6 blooms, foil wrapping and a bow. You may take your

plant home after the 10:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. Rather than giving a poinsettia, you may choose to give a special gift in the same amount as a poinsettia (or more) to Dominican Republic Mission Trip. Envelopes are available on the table in the entrance of the Parish Life Center and Narthex.

Supper Club Anyone? We are considering straight up the Supper Club again in January. If you would be interested in participating, please call Marie Eargle at 996-5371.

Unable to Come to Worship due to physical or other limitations? If so, one of the pastors will be happy to bring the Sacrament of Holy Communion to you! Call the church office at 359-2470 to request a visit.

LMC Health Screening will be January 19, 2016 from 7:30 am to 10:30 am in the Parish Life Center. 2016 Marriage Retreat Registration Forms are now available on the table at the PLC entrance. Registrations are due by November 30.

Penny War is coming to St. Peter’s!!!

Clemson Vs. Carolina: We know who will win the battle,

but who will win the war? What are Penny Wars? A penny war is a contest between opposing teams to see who can collect the most pennies in their team’s container, but there’s a twist. Pennies placed in the collection bottles count positively, but other denominations of coins or cash and checks count negatively. So if the Carolina bottle has 10,000 pennies inside, and a die-hard Clemson fan drops a $100 bill in the Carolina bottle, then the Carolina total is wiped out to zero! When will this Penny War be held? The 2015 Clemson Vs. Carolina Penny War will run from Sunday, October 25 through noon on Friday, November 28. Where can I donate? Collection containers will be located in the PLC on Sunday mornings and on the table in the church office kitchen during regular weekday business hours. What’s the prize? The winning team will enjoy watching a representative of the losing team have his head shaved on the Sunday after the big game. So even if your team loses the battle on November 28, you can still enjoy a sweet victory on November 29! Who wins? Everyone! All the money collected in this five-week fundraising event

will go toward the Dominican Republic

mission project. So save your pennies, let the

games begin, and may the best team win!

Recommendation for Call of Senior Pastor

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

Jenny Stone, Council Secretary

A called meeting of the Congregational Coun-cil was held October 18, 2015 in the office building conference room at 2:30pm. Russell Rawl, Vice President of the Council called the meeting to order. Pastor Paulette McHugh and council members (Tommy Stone, Kevin Gobbi, Doreen Edmondson, Sandra Brasing-ton, Jerry Richey, Greg Webb, Buck Vaughan, Karen Price and Adam Davis) were in atten-dance. Carleigh Zee, Bill Jennings and Carl Shealy were absent. The Call Committee had requested this meet-ing with the council. All members (Larry James, chairman of the committee, Tommy Stone, Landis Sandel, Toby Porth, Clyde Sanders, and Monroe Lindler) were in atten-dance. Larry informed the council that all committee members were unanimous in the following recommendation. The Call Commit-tee’s recommendation to council was to ap-prove Pastor Bill White for the Senior Pastor position. If approved, council would include the recommendation on the Annual Congrega-tional Meeting agenda and bring the recom-mendation to a vote by the congregation at that meeting on November 8, 2015. Greg Webb made a motion to approve the recommendation of Pastor Bill White for the Senior Pastor position, Buck Vaughan sec-onded the motion and the vote to approve was unanimous in favor. It is noted that Bill Jennings and Carl Shealy although not in at-tendance had expressed their approval vote to council members prior to the meeting. Larry thanked the council on behalf of the committee for the opportunity to serve on the call committee and offered their continued help as needed. The meeting concluded at 3:00pm with the Lord’s Prayer.

Constitutional Amendment to Be Ratified—In November of 2014, at the annual congregational meeting, the follow-ing amendment to our congregation’s con-stitution was adopted and will need to be ratified at the Congregational Meeting to be held on November 8, 2015: “No non-ordained employee of St. Peter’s Lu-theran Church shall be a member of Church Council, the Stewardship/Finance Commit-tee, or the Staff Support Committee, nor shall any employee’s immediate family member be a member of the Council, the Stewardship/Finance Committee, or the Staff Support Committee. Immediate family would include spouses, parents, children, siblings, step-parents, step-children, and step-siblings.” Once ratified, this item will become Item Number 12.05 under the section on Church Council and the present Item 12.05 will be-come 12.06 and all the other following items will be renumbered accordingly. This wording was added to our previous consti-tution in 2003 but was inadvertently over-looked in writing our present constitution which was ratified in 2014.

Our Annual Congregational Meet-ing will be held Sunday, November 8 at 9:30 am in the Sanctuary. We will elect Council members, an Endowment Board member, adopt a budget for 2016, ratify a constitutional amendment to our constitu-tion, and ratify several amendments to the NALC Constitution. We need your vote! Please plan to attend.

Please read this excerpt from page 132 of Mark Allan Powell’s book “Giving to God”

Participation in the church is free, granted through the grace and mercy of God to the totally undeserving.

Furthermore, the church of Jesus Christ does not base its decisions regarding finances or anything else on

what seems fair or sensible by human standards. Our decisions are guided by what accords with the won-

derful promises of God. The simple truth is that most churches have many members who rarely contrib-

ute anything at all to their congregation’s financial needs. Such persons are, in effect, requiring other

members to pay their way for them. This is not fair by any human standard, but churches are communi-

ties of grace in which persons touched by God’s goodness are often willing to do far more than what

should be expected of them. Some persons give well beyond their share for the sake of those whose com-

mitments or abilities may be only marginal. This may not be fair but it is good. God gives to us what we

do not deserve and, and in turn, we sometimes bear the burdens of others, regardless of whether they are

worthy or appreciative or even aware of what we are doing for them. Truth be known, most of us have

gone through times in our lives when we were on the receiving end of such benevolence.

I would just like to thank all of our students who were prepared to be involved in Youth Sun-day. I loved when they seemed disappointed that church was cancelled that day because it meant they were looking forward to leading the services. And even though they were disap-pointed, none complained or whined (which sadly are staples of today’s youth culture.) I saw both excitement and maturity all around, so thank you.
