1 January 2015 Dear Friends in Christ, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Cheryl and I are grateful to God and excited to be joining the Saint Peter’s family this month and look forward to being in Christ’s ministry with you. We also hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! It is, of course, that time of year when we have the opportunity to make New Year’s resolutions. In that spirit, I’m asking you to consider the Vision Statement Cheryl and I committed to some years ago; “Our vision is to be disciples of Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, make disciples for Christ.” Clearly there are two distinct parts to this vision statement. First, it is our desire and intention to be disciples of Jesus. Toward this end we strive to be faithful in such matters as reading the Holy Bible and praying each and every day, worshiping every week, growing in our financial stewardship, and being specifically and tangibly involved in the ministry of our congregation. As we are about the business of doing these things God’s Holy Spirit blesses us with growth in Christian faith and literally empowers our “being” disciples of Christ. Second, we recognize that Jesus commands us to go out into our community and be God’s instrument to bring others to faith in Christ. So how does one “make disciples for Christ”? One way is to invite an un-churched or de-churched person to worship with you. There are a number of steps that would lead up to this invitation. Step one would be to ask God specifically to reveal to you a friend, neighbor, or acquaintance that you should invite. Once you have identified someone, step two would be to ask God to enable you to see and utilize opportunities to sincerely deepen your friendship with that person. Lastly, when God tells you the time is right, invite that friend to worship. It’s just that easy! As some like to say by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit: “Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ!” This is Jesus’ command to us in Matthew 28:18- 20: And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (ESV). As Martin Luther was known to say, “This command we should not take lightly.” I would like to challenge you to make this one of your New Year’s resolutions: commit to bring at least one new person with you to worship some time during 2016. After all, that really is a significant part of what it means to be Christian. May our gracious God bless our discipleship this New Year! God loves you, and so do I! Dear Friends in Christ, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Cheryl and I are grateful to God and excited to be joining the Saint Peter’s family this month and look forward to being in Christ’s ministry with you. We also hope you all had a very Merry Christmas! It is, of course, that time of year when we have the opportunity to make New Year’s resolutions. Holy Communion every Sunday? Beginning in January 2016, St. Peter’s will be offering the sacrament of Holy Communion each Sunday of the month (exclusive of fifth Sundays) and all church festivals. Why do we offer Communion so often? Holy Communion is a gift from God that offers both the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith. Anyone who sins (and that is every one of us) should hunger and thirst for God’s forgiveness found in the body and blood of Christ, in, with, and under the consecrated elements of bread and wine. In so much as we are all miserable sinners in bondage to sin and constantly assailed by the evils of this world and the evils within, we should, as Martin Luther advocated, receive the sacrament of Holy Communion as often as possible. In his preface to The Small Catechism, Luther writes, “For if they [the people] believed that they had so much evil and needed so much good, they would not neglect the sacrament, in which help against such evil is provided and in which so much good is given. It would not be necessary to compel them with any law to receive the sacrament. Instead, they would come on their own, rushing and running to it; they would compel themselves to come and would insist that you give them the sacrament.” (Italics added for emphasis.) In this wicked age, when Christians and Christian values are under attack, it is a comfort to know that we can always come and seek refuge within His body, the church. Here, in God’s house, in the sacrament of Holy Communion, Christ comes and dwells among us and within us, filling us with His presence, His grace, and His strength. May we always receive this gift with thanksgiving and joy.

Want a worthwhile New Year’s resolution? Commit yourself to daily Bible reading and study. Here are some great ways to make God’s Word a part of your daily routine:

1) Get into God’s Word. Pick up one of the new ESV Bibles in the narthex and set aside a time to read each day. Donations for these Bibles of $12.50 each can be made payable to St. Peter’s with “Bibles” in the memo line.

2) Let God’s Word interrupt your life. Download the St. Peter’s Church app on your smart phone or tablet to receive daily devotions each morning or, if you prefer, find these devotions posted daily on the Carolinas Mission District website carolinasnalc.org. You can also receive a weekly verse text by texting the word "Drops" to 614-328-5636, or by signing up for a weekly email at http://2hoots.com/users/add/59. . (Be sure to check the box for

"Weekly Sunday Message.") 3) Listen to God’s Word. Come to

worship each week on Sundays and Wednesdays to hear Gods Word proclaimed. Invite God’s Word into your life by utilizing apps such as Bible Gateway. Many Bible apps have the option to listen to the Bible, so you can listen to God’s Word wherever you go. This option is perfect for morning or afternoon commutes to work and school.

4) Remember God’s Word. Clip the weekly memory verse from the bulletin each week and tape it in a prominent place where you spend a lot of time. The rear view mirror of your car, the bathroom mirror, and the refrigerator are just a few ideas. Take a few moments each day committing God’s Word to memory.

Stewardship Thoughts The Law of Eager Willingness

This writing comes from the 9th Chapter of the book “The 33 Laws of Stewardship” written by Dave Sutherland and Kirk Nowery. Wise stewards joyfully choose to support God’s work and do God’s will. Eager willingness to give is the most reasonable, intelligent response to God’s blessings upon us. Since everything we have and everything we are is the result of His grace, why not be eager? Why not be willing? Nothing else makes sense. The willing giver chooses to be open toward God and man. Too many believers are closed and exclusive when they ought to be open and inclusive. Openness is the normal state for a yielded heart. To be otherwise is to limit the flow of God’s blessing. It’s a daily choice, simply voicing one’s yieldedness, saying “Lord, here am I, use me as your servant, guide me as your steward.” The willing giver encourages others to give, inspiring them by example. Of all the ways in which King David inspired his people as a leader, his generous giving had perhaps the most impact because it was something literally every one of his subjects could imitate. Not everyone could lead forces into battle, nor judge complex situations, nor oversee an entire nation’s well being; but everyone could give generously, and they were inspired to do so by a powerful example. When you give willingly, God can use your example to encourage others to do likewise. The willing giver sees the pleasure of sacrifice, not the pain. Giving often demands sacrifice, and sacrifice always has a measure of pain. But, ironically, sacrifice can also have its share of pleasure if we simply remember why we’re doing what we do, why we’re giving as we are. What is our sacrifice, really? Are we not just giving back to God what He gave to us in the first place? Willingness to give, whatever the cost, ought to be prompted by the pleasure of serving a gracious God. Submitted by Monroe Lindler On behalf of the Stewardship Finance Committee

Donut Cards are once again available for purchase for $14.00. Please see Jonette or Lester Cutter to purchase.

INVITATION TO SUNDAY SCHOOL We invite you to join us for Sunday School on Sunday mornings. We know you will enjoy the Bible study, the fellowship, and the Christian support of your fellow church members. We thought it would be interesting to share what some of our younger Sunday School members had to say about what they like about being part of the Sunday School program. Jesus and the rainbow, ringing bells, music, Bible verses, learning and reading about God,

the prayers at the end, singing songs about Jesus, making crafts, watching videos, being

with my friends and learning about God together, because I love Jesus.

Psalms 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY STARTING IN JANUARY

He Speaks to Me: Preparing to Hear from God by Priscilla Shirer

A common question of many Christians is, “How can I know when God is speaking to me?” Priscilla Shirer uses the account of God speaking to Samuel to show how God speaks to Christians and how we can discern His voice and position ourselves to respond. In He Speaks to Me, participants will discover how God spoke to Samuel, Samuel’s response, and how He speaks to believers today. They will be encouraged to listen and respond to God’s voice. And, by listening and obeying Him, women will experience spiritual growth, Christian discipline and the desire to serve. This 7 week study with videos and a workbook will be led by Lisa Leitzsey and will begin January 25, 2016. Please join us in the Youth Room on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00PM. Visitors and friends are welcome! To sign up and order workbook ($13), please c o n t a c t D a r l e n e L a v i s k y a t [email protected]
