German and international trade magazines recently reported a capacity shortage
and a lack of empty containers on the backhaul from Northern Europe to Asia. Com-
pared with the market in beginning 2017, the sea freight rates have multiplied. Air-
freight rates have increased due to the high demand.
If China is your core or target market SACO Shipping can offer you an alternative
solution with steady rates: Our weekly neutral LCL rail service from Hamburg and
Bremen to Suzhou in the Yangtze Delta. We also can provide on-carriage to Ningbo,
Wenzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shanghai and many other cities. Transit times
are between 21 days (Suzhou) and 26 days (Chengdu).

New customs regulations in AlgeriaNew customs regulations for exports to
Algeria came into effect on April 1, 2017.
All shipments must now must now show
an additional label indicating the NVOCC
at origin, the NVOCC at the receiving
end as well as the respective warehouse
used. SACO Shipping has designed a
label meeting these requirements. For
further details please contact your local
SACO office.
As of May 2017 we are expanding our
services to Algeria and offer you a direct
service to Oran.
Six day service to TunisOur newly established six day service
from Hamburg and Bremen to Tunis
using trucks, rail and ferry has been
very well received. In addition we can
offer you dangerous goods upon
request. Please bear in mind that we
have to use container vessels for these
goods, resulting in longer transit times.

Introducing:
Katherina Endrukat
Africa’s cultural diversity is another rea-
son that makes the continent so fascina-
ting for Katherina Endrukat. “More than
3,000 ethnic groups are living in Africa’s
54 states and speaking more than 2,000
different languages. Each of the five
regions – i.e. Northern Africa, Western
Africa, Eastern Africa, Central Africa and
Southern Africa – is different and you
have to bear that in mind.”
After graduation from school Katherina
Endrukat began to study law but as uni-
versity life wasn’t to her liking, she star-
ted an apprenticeship at SACO Shipping.
A good education was a personal must
for her. Having passed the exam in
freight forwarding, she joined SACO’s
Africa team. In addition, she qualified as
a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor and
did her Bachelor in Logistics. In 2014
she was appointed supervisor of the
now seven strong Africa team.
Our customers value our expertiseCurrently SACO is working towards
increasing its offer of 35 direct services
to Africa by establishing new services
and increasing departure frequencies.
As import regulations are constantly
subject to change gathering the respec-
tive information is a very important task.
To be able to do this you need three
things, Katherina Endrukat explains: An
efficient network, competent local part-
ners and an experienced team in Ham-
requirements in order to avoid complica-
tions upon arrival.” With Africa being a
spot market not all of SACO’s custo-
mers are familiar with the requirements
in each market. “Besides shipping we
consider it our job to guide and support
our customers when it comes for
example to Certificates of Conformity for
Kenya, BESC/ECTN Notes for Western
Africa or all issues related to dangerous
goods”, she says with a smile.
Algeria recently issued a new customs
regulation that came into effect on April 1,
2017, stating that all shipments must
show an additional tag. “We simply desi-
gned a new label”, says Katherina Endru-
kat. “With our years of experience such
changes on short notice not surprise us
anymore. Our customers value our exper-
tise, they often call us when they are pre-
paring to ship FCLs on their own in order
to avoid mistakes.”
Some challenges, however, are unhe-
ard of in other markets. “Sometimes we
can’t communicate with our partners
due to a power cuttage or because they
can’t access the Internet. Then there
are ports that are so heavily congested
that long delays occur.” Defective or
even lacking infrastructure sometimes
limits the options for arranging on-car-
riage. “To arrange cross border servi-
ces as we know them from Europe
requires a lot of patience in Africa.”

Every member of my
team is the absolute
specialist for his or
her trade.
Given its huge potential Africa is a highly interesting continent, says Katherina Endrukat, Supervisor for Africa and Indian Ocean. Facts and figures prove it: Africa’s population is the youngest of all continents – about 41 percent of its 1.2 billion inhabitants are less than 15 years of age. Six of the world’s largest metropolises are African: Cairo (15.9 mil-lion inhabitants), Lagos (12.8), Kinshasa (11.4), Johannesburg (8.7), Onitsha (7.4) and Luanda (6.9). Despite wide regi-onal differences the African gross domestic product has grown by 30 percent in the last ten years.
burg. “Every member of my team is the

responsibility. We want to raise the awa-
reness of our customers to special

Eastern Africa is boomingSo far Katherina Endrukat has been to
South Africa, Morocco, Mauritius and
Madagascar. These visits are important
to get a better understanding of partners,
customers and the local conditions. “It’s
great to see how our partners grow with
us. CFR Freight for example, our partner
in South Africa for decades, now runs
four state-of-the-art warehouses that are
as unique as Packing Center Hamburg
(PCH) in Hamburg.”
She is eager to visit Eastern Africa as the
region is booming. “It was perfect timing
to open our own offices in Dar es Salaam
and Mombasa last year.”
Kenya is Germany’s most important
economic partner in Eastern Africa but
the trade volume only amounts to 533
million Euro.” Forecasts, though, show
the potential of these markets. The
Kenyan economy is expected to grow
by 6 percent in 2017, the growth rate in
Tanzania should even be around 7
percent.
For Katherina Endrukat it is only a matter
of time before German companies focus
on these emerging markets too.

Apprentice exchange:A special kind of know how transfer
Both companies are specialists in logistics although in a com-pletely different way. Whereas SACO Shipping’s core compe-tence is handling exports and imports of groupage containers, DVV Media Group is focussed on reporting about logistics, e.g. in its daily publication Täglicher Hafenbericht or in the Deutsche Verkehrs-Zeitung.
To widen the horizon of both companies’ apprentices,
Oliver Detje, DVV’s Publishing Manager suggested an
exchange – an idea that was whole-heartedly welco-
med by Andrea Briks, SACO Shipping’s Managing
Director. When they visited DVV’s editorial offices
SACO’s apprentices learned how trade publications
are generated and produced, how they are marketed
and what it takes to sell advertising space. Upon their
return visit the soon-to-be media specialists were ama-
zed to see how many different steps it takes to export
a shipment fast and sound to its destination in another
country or continent.
