members of our church could do

to fulfill this theme? We readily

agreed that from a church

corporation perspective, the

answers would probably be about

serving in some capacity, like

being: on the board, a teacher,

small group leader, etc. But after

some insightful discussion, I felt

that should not be the primary

answer.

I think we can really help

others most effectively by sharing

our spiritual journey with one

another. I have seen this first-

hand in the discipleship group I

am part of. When we guys come

together each week, after

spending time in God’s Word and

in fellowship with Jesus, and then

share in our group what God is

teaching and challenging us with

and how we are struggling, we are

helping each other pursue Jesus.

The book of Hebrews says it this

way:

“Let us consider how to

stimulate one another to love

Dear Church Family,

In speaking with others,

some have asked me, “What will

happen in my life if I cultivate a

quiet time with the Lord?” I’ve

responded... “My friend, many

wonderful things will begin to take

place in your life.”

First, you will sense a new

closeness in your relationship with

the Lord. In Psalm 27, David

records for us his longing for the

Pastor Charlie

Each Person Helping Others

Passionately Pursue Jesus

Christ

Recently Bruce Eyerly,

chairman of our CE team, and I

were discussing our 2010

theme: “Each Person Helping

Others Passionately Pursue

Jesus Christ.” We were

wondering if you, our church

family, see the theme as yours,

for you to personally live out, or

do you see it as a theme for us

as a local church organization?

Bruce asked me a great

question: What would I say

and good deeds, not forsaking

our own assembling together,

as is the habit of some, but

encouraging one another; and

all the more as you see the day

drawing near”

(Hebrews 10:24, 25; NAS).

Clearly sharing our

spiritual journeys with each other

in the context of encouragement

and support is vital to our

spiritual growth.

Over the years, I have

seen that I personally grow the

most in my spiritual life when I

have people that join me in

pursuit of Jesus, and we openly

share with each other our

experiences in that pursuit. I have

also noticed that when I do not

have such a group, my growth

tends to slow down and,

sometimes, even stop. Even

though I do love Jesus, I need that

spiritual stimulation and

encouragement that comes with

being part of such a group. And I

bet you do to.

In passionate pursuit of Jesus,

Pastor Charlie

Lord. He said...

“One thing I ask of the Lord,

this is what I seek: That I may

dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life, to gaze

upon the beauty of the Lord

and to seek Him in His

temple” (Psalm 27:4).

David’s greatest desire was

to live in God’s presence each day

of his life. He knew that this is

where he would find the peace of

mind and the strength to live

above the distractions which

bombard us daily. Dear, friend, is

this same desire alive in us?

Second, when we spend

time alone with the Lord,

“drinking” of Him (John 7:37-

38), we will notice that the inner

attitudes of our lives will be

We Get Mail

Dear Torrance First Baptist Family,

Thank you so very, very much for your cards from time to

time and your prayers, or course! I looked today through a church

directory from the time of Bob Dehn. Wow! Long time ago—

before Newlin! How I miss you all and so fondly remember you

mothers and fathers who were children! But God brings you into

prayer, and oh, He still gives me children! We are preparing even

now for summer Good News Clubs and Fairs (I love it!). Not

allowed to drive any more—have no car. Someone teams up with

me, and, as God directs, I’ll get to teach Bible stories at the State

Fair (Oregon, that is). Our new cook in the assisted living home

where I “get to live,” is going to have a summer Good News Club

in his backyard for me to “do”!

Do please pray for people to be led by our Lord to

participate this summer, working for children everywhere, to hear

and see how they can love Jesus back!

I do appreciate your patience. It is difficult to write

letters—but God is so Good. I even get to help here and there with

other “residents” — so many have such limiting physical problems.

Mine are no fun, but God can give joy anyway!

What a great church is our Torrance First, isn’t it? Aren’t

we?! God’s joy be energizing you all!!

Much, much love,

Mary Eason

Dear TFB family,

We want to thank you all

for everything you did for us

to help ease Dad’s transition

Thanks for the plant, all

the visits, and gifts of food.

Thanks for all the cards and

Thanks for helping us

Our Dear Church Family,

We are so thankful to

the many, many of you who

sent cards and have lifted us

up in prayer before, during,

and after Tom’s recent sur-

gery.

Sometimes it is harder

to hold on when you are going through yet another

storm, but knowing so many are lifting us up in prayer

helps so much.

Thank you to all of those who provided us with

yummy meals.

It meant so much to have Rog pray before the

surgery and with the family during the surgery.

Our hearts continue to be

blessed by all the prayers and

cards that have come in.

You are very dear to us,

Tom and Candy Nordstrom

Introducing our new Jr. High Director

Hello, my name is Trevor Schulte.

I have recently completed my B.A. in Youth and Family

Ministries from Hope International University (Fullerton). I have had

the opportunity to serve in the Jr. High Ministry of Mariners Church in

Irvine as a small group leader as well as taught, on occasion, in the large

group meetings. I have been a camp counselor at a summer camp in Amherst, MA, along

with volunteering with the non-profit organization, Just Cause, which reaches out to

Southern California hospitals with a volunteer carnival for kids.

Having been saved through grace, I am indebted to the Lord’s work. The Lord

gave me a sense and awareness of how quick life can be and how underappreciated it

really is. Ten years ago, I was just a simple boy that was focusing on what was important

to me at the time—a material season in life. I was then awakened by an act of grace that

made me realize that love spanned beyond just family and friends, but was universal

through God’s Agape love. Since then, I have studied His Word with the simple intent to

live a life of service for God who gave my life meaning and considers me one of His own.

I could let a testimony define my ministry, but I would rather have it show

through my passion of doing something meaningful. To do anything worth character in

this world, we need to be humble and so that is how I choose to be. However, if there

were one phrase to describe my life, I’d say that I have flown “head over heels for the

Lord” in love and dedication. I am a simple man with an extraordinary Father and a lot of

feet to wash.

Page 8: July 2010 Proclaimer

We often refer to church as a building, an event, or an organization. These

understandings are common in our culture, but the church is much more.

One way to think of each local church is as an expression of identity and a

function. The church's identity is the unchanging essence of her being

before God. The church's function is her overarching purpose in his

Kingdom.

Identity is grounded in the will of God—Father, Son, and Spirit. All we are

as a faith community flows from God’s decision to glorify himself by

creating, redeeming, and glorifying a people for himself. Our very life is

from him.

The goal of our identity is Jesus himself. He is the ultimate authority—not

only for the church, but also for all creation. When we behave as church,

everything we are leads to him.

Our function is grounded in our participation in God's mission as we

proclaim the Kingdom of the Father, embody the presence of the Son, and

follow the sovereign guidance of the Spirit. Our work and worship flow

from him.

The goal of our function is a life-filling practical trust determined by Jesus.

This sort of trust declares God's good name and lives out God's design for

humanity (body and soul).

Our trust in God is demonstrated through our thoughts and actions. The life

of the body and the life of the mind are one. Humanity is whole as

individuals and as community. The life of the church ought to reflect this

God-given wholeness in who we are and in what we do.

TFB Global Outreach by Dee and the G. O. Committee

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show

them that they should always pray and not give up”

(Luke 18:1).

Many of the teams we support have asked us to pray for

their ministries, so this month we will share these specific

requests.

Ajay Pillai - India National Inland Mission

Pray - concerning our Evangelistic meetings in villages and

slums during this summer season in India. [It was] 109 degrees

yesterday in New Delhi. There seems to be a more openness to

hearing the Gospel when presented. We want to take maximum

advantage of this door of opportunity. Pray the seed of the Word

will fall on good ground.

Pray - for the ongoing Medical ministries underway in slums:

one day we had 350 people visit the clinics and just received a

report that today we had over 600 people by the end of the day.

Everyone is presented a clear Gospel message. Pray for the

follow-up work and that the Lord will protect us from the

"human trafficking gangs" and "slumlords" that constantly

threaten the work of the Lord.

Jon Sousa – Foreign Missionaries in Oregon

Please pray for Lupe, the pastor of our church plant in

Negritas, Mexico. His mother is an alcoholic and, of course, the

family (and especially Lupe) has been trying to get her to quit

for some time. This week Lupe's mother drank too much and fell

down. She received a large bruise on the side of her face. To

save face, she is telling everyone in town a lie — that Lupe was

trying to get her to stop drinking and hit her.

Pray that people would not believe her as Lupe has a good

reputation of being a Godly man.

Pray that the Holy Spirit would convict Lupe's mom and

bring her to salvation.

Bobby Gupta – Hindustan Bible Institute (HBI)

Please pray for the pastors who will be coming to HBI for

informal training in September. These pastors are committing to

planting additional churches throughout southern India in the

villages surrounding their towns. Please pray for these pastors,

their families and congregations.

Thank you so much for lifting these ministries up in prayer.

changing. The apostle Paul wrote these truths

to the believers in Colosse...

“Since then, you have been raised

with Christ, set your hearts on things

above, where Christ is seated at the

right hand of God. Set your minds

on things above, not on earthly

things. For you died, and Your life

is now hidden with Christ in God”

(Colossians 3:1-3).

Setting our hearts on things above

means seeking to place heaven’s priorities

into daily practice. Yes, as we spend time

alone with the Lord, we will be enabled to

keep everything in proper perspective. Have

you noticed how easy it is to sacrifice the best

(that which honors God) in order to secure

that which is seemingly good (that which

pleases us)?

And thirdly, as we spend time alone

with the Lord, He assures us of His presence

and strength.

You see, He never intended that we

should try to live this life of discipleship on

our own. Why? He knew that we could never

do it! Instead, He provided a Helper who

would teach us...undergird us...protect us, and,

yes, fill us with His very mind and thoughts.

Our Lord tells us in John 14:26...

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,

Whom the Father will send in My

Name, will teach you all things and

will remind you of everything I have

said to you.”

Dear people, when the Holy Spirit is

allowed to have His will and way in us, we

will discover a whole new way to look at life

and yes...live it for God’s glory. All of this

takes place when we consistently get alone

with the Lord and “drink” of Him even as

David did. May this be our desire today...to

get alone with Him and allow the Holy Spirit

to refresh, strengthen and equip us for

challenges which each new day brings our

way.

Still drinking and still needing Him

more than ever,

Pastor Rog
