Dear Pavo Baptist Church Family and Friends: Some years ago, I was given a stack of yellowed papers by an elderly retired pastor who was a member of the church where I was pas-tor. He had hoped I might be able to use some of the items. To be quite honest, I wasn’t particularly interested in reading some outdated material, and I definitely didn’t need the clutter. However, in that stack was an early ‘60’s church newsletter from a Florida Southern Bap-tist Church where a gentleman was pastor who had served the church where I was presently the pastor. That Pastor’s Column caught my eye. Though typewritten and mimeographed (do you remember those?), and now yellowed and brittle with age, the illustration therein piqued my interest because it is timeless. That pastor began telling a story of why he was not at church on a particular Sunday, and that he didn’t think anyone would really notice that he was not there. After all, other people just didn’t show up some Sundays and things went on. The story continued, sounding so convincing that it had really happened. The Pastor then revealed that the story was fictitious on his part, but that the situation did happen quite often in many church families. You know, churches have always been challenged by the selfish desire to just stay home, for whatever reason.

Let’s remember that church attendance is so important for at least these reasons:

God’s Word calls us to a Holy Assembly on a regular basis. Because we are the Church, the Bride of Christ, our desire ought to be to spend time with our Husband, Christ. Sunday is the day we celebrate the Resurrection, and we owe Christ our All! Bible Study and Worship disciples us, and makes us Holy! Full churches and church parking areas gives a testimony to the world of who is our First Love! The absence of our automobiles and our bodies from our home in masse gives testimony to our First Love! Our children will follow in our footsteps, so we ought to give them perfect examples.

See you at church every Sunday, and Wednesday! Even if we are on vacation over Sunday, be in someone’s church. May we never take a “vacation” from our Lord!

In the Matchless Name of Jesus, Timothy C. VanLandingham
