From Fr. JC Maximillian’s Desk “Staying Power” Week 6:

Tithing & Giving

I am sure you have heard the saying, “The best laid plans of mice and men.” Well, this is one of those times. When I was looking at the message series for this year, knowing that we were

going to finish this liturgical year with “Staying Power,” I had the intention of making this weekend “Stewardship Weekend.” I planned to have Stewardship cards to hand out to have you prayerful commit you time, talent, and treasure to the parish for the coming year. However, with the pandemic, and with most of our parishioners watching the live-stream of the Mass, and not being permitted to have handouts, I guess we will have to put off the official “Stewardship Weekend” until next year. However, as we start the sixth and final week of our message series, “Staying Power,” we are going to be talking about tithing and giving. This series has been about looking at the commitments that we should make and keep in order to grow in our spiritual life. We have made the case of why spiritual growth should be one of the top priorities in our lives; namely because it can have such a big and positive impact on all the other areas of your life. We have identified five commitments that we think are essential for spiritual growth. They make the acronym STEPS: Serving in ministry and/or mission, Tithing and giving, Engaging in small groups, Prayer and sacraments, and Sharing your faith. For the past four weeks we have looked more in depth at four of those commitments: Prayer, Sharing your faith, Engaging in small groups, and Serving. That leaves only one more to talk about, and it is the one that pastors least like to talk about, and parishioners least like to hear, but it can be the commitment that is the most powerful: Tithing and giving. Money is in fact a spiritual issue, and you might be surprised how often Jesus talks about money. It's a spiritual issue because so easily we can grow to trust in it rather than grow to trust in God. God wants for us to be in control of our money and to use it as a tool for good purposes, like helping other people and honoring him. God has entrusted his money to us. And the point is that it's his money, it's not ours. God is the master, God is the owner of the money. The source of your possessions and your income, it's not your business, it's not the company that you work for, it's not even your investments, it's God. We are His stewards. Money is like water; if you don't contain it, it'll go everywhere and often will go to the lowest places. We have all spent money on things we don't even know where they are anymore. If we don't give to God first, so often we find ourselves giving to God last. We give God our leftovers. God wants you to give to him first, not because he wants your money, it's his money anyway. No, God does not want something from you, he wants something for you. He wants to bless your finances, and he wants what your money represents, your life and your heart, because it's in giving him your life and your heart that you will find fulfillment. By looking at the parable that Jesus tells in this weekend’s Gospel reading we will see that when we use the gift of money according to God’s plan, He promises the rewards of affirmation, promotion, and celebration in which the rewards outweigh the investment by far. When we invest through giving, God matches our giving, and then He surpasses it. The only boundary to God's giving is the one we create in our giving, because we can't out give God. Everybody saves for the future, but it turns out you can give to the future. At the end of the day, at the end of our lives, all we'll have is what we've given away.

54-Day Rosary Novena for Our Nation

Beginning October 15, 2020

Finishing December 7, 2020

As we all know, 2020 has been a difficult year. Of course we are now becoming accustomed to wearing a face mask whenever we go out in public, and social distancing has become a norm. However, the Coronavirus Pandemic has not been the only challenge we have been facing as a nation. Since May, there have been many protests – some, unfortunately violent – pointing out the continued racial inequalities in our country. And on top of it all, there is the partisan back and forth of a Presidential Election.

While many have taken the extra time at home as an opportunity for deepening their relationship with God through extra prayer, the various crises we have been facing has also brought to light that our country has become much more secularized, and has lost much of its rootedness in God. That being the case, after a discussion with the deacons, I have decided to pray a 54-Day Rosary Novena for the Sanctification of our Nation.

In 1884, in Naples, Italy, in what has become known as the apparition of Our Lady of Pompeii, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Fortuna Agrelli and some of her relatives. Fortuna has been suffering from a very painful illness for 13 months, and she and her family decided to pray a novena of Rosaries (a Rosary each day for 9 days) asking the Blessed Virgin for her prayers. When the Blessed Mother appeared to Fortuna, she told her to pray three novenas of Rosaries for her request, and then another three novenas of Rosaries in thanksgiving, for a total of 54 days.

In this devotion, the novena is always begun with the Joyful Mysteries, no matter on which day the novena is started. There are meditations for the various mysteries of the Rosary, and depending on whether it is during the first 27 days of petition, or the second 27 days of thanksgiving.

We began our 54-Day Rosary Novena on October 15, 2020; the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, and will conclude it on December 7, 2020, the eve of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Patroness of the United States (and the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor). Our petition will be the Sanctification of our Nation. We will be praying the Rosary each day after the 9am Mass, Monday through Saturday in St. Casimir, and on Sunday in Holy Name. If you can join us in church to pray the Rosary, wonderful, but the prayers/meditations for the 54-Day Rosary will also be posted on the parish website for those who would like to join us from their homes.

I hope that many of you will join us for this powerful devotion.

Fr. J.C.

PRINCIPLE OF SUBSIDIARITY

One of the key principles of Catholic social thought is known as the principle of subsidiarity. This tenet holds that nothing should be done by a larger and more complex organization which can be done as well by a smaller and simpler organization. In other words, any activity which can be performed by a more decentralized entity should be. This principle is a bulwark of limited government and personal freedom. It conflicts with the passion for centralization and bureaucracy characteristic of the Welfare State.

In his encyclical, Centesimus Anmus, Pope John Paul II talked about the importance of the principle of subsidiarity. For an organization or government to intervene directly it will deprive others, and society as a whole, of its responsibility. In other words, if towns can take care of a problem then they should. The state or federal government should not interfere. If the state were to interfere, even with good intentions, then the town will lose its freedom and, possibly become comfortable with being enabled.

The principle of subsidiarity applies to all human institutions. Ultimately, the Church in applying this principle wants to defend the family and human rights. Individual people should begin solving problems within the context of the family. When the family is unable to protect itself or feed itself, then local and state interventions are appropriate in order to protect families (its citizens) and overcome poverty and hunger. In the case of poverty, these interventions are best when the family is not only given food, but given an opportunity to earn enough money to supply food for themselves. When the family can once again support themselves then the government interventions should cease. This is how we strengthen our culture.

In 1831-32, Alexis de Tocqueville visited the United States in order to find out what made her great. After traveling across the country he concluded, “America is great because America is good. When America ceases being good, it will cease to be great.” While he noted the morality of Americans and their support of Government and Democracy, he also recognized that it may not last. De Tocqueville has much wisdom that was shared in his book “Democracy in America.” The Church does as well. The principle of subsidiarity is worth exploring in more depth. But its main purpose, to protect human freedom and protect the family is enough for us to promote this principle.

STAYING POWER SERIES SUMMARY

We grow by the commitments we make and fulfilling them. Committing to a marriage, a job, a friendship allows us to grow. Committing to taking a foreign language, dance or martial arts class, and fulfilling that commitment helps us to grow in our ability to do those things. Likewise we come to mature as Christians,

in Christ-likeness by the commitments we make and keep. In this series we will look at the power of commitment and the steps we invite people to take as a church. These are commitments or habits that must

be practiced over and over again. Commit to a life-long journey of growth. We will talk about both the commitments and the benefits of those commitments. You can’t be committed to everything but important

to be committed to the right things.

Week Six –Commitment to Giving – Stewardship Weekend

Mathew 25:14-30

In this week we will invite people make a commitment to give to the church in the year

ahead. In the parable of the Talents, Jesus tells the servants who have invested the master’s

money to enlarge his kingdom, “Well done, good and faithful stewards.” We are stewards of

our money and possessions and we are rewarded when we use the money and possessions

we have to build God’s kingdom. We will invite members of the parish to make a

commitment in the year ahead.

What do we want them to feel?

What do we want them to know? God rewards us when we invest his money to build his

kingdom.

What do we want them to do? Hand in a commitment card giving one percent more of their

income away.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD Each year our parish supports the Boy Scout Project SCOUTING FOR FOOD, usually the weekend after Thanksgiving. This year we would like to expand the collection to a whole month. So from October 24 until November 24, we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Scouts at both churches in the donation bins. So please give generously as this drive will be transported by the Scouts to the Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry to help the poor and needy in our area. If you’d like to participate in the “Pre-Advent Calendar Food Drive”, please see Page 9 of this bulletin!!!

A NEW GIVING TREE THIS YEAR

Our St. Vincent de Paul conference is unable to have our Christmas Gift Giving Program this year due to the limitations of the Covid 19 virus. In its place we are requesting donations of $25.00 gift cards that we will then deliver to the needy families in our area. We suggest gift cards for Target, Walmart and Amazon. The cards can be dropped off at the parish office in an envelope marked St. Vincent de Paul prior to Thanksgiving. Our parishioners have always been very generous in the past and we thank you for your help to provide a nice Christmas for our children.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, we

are not able to provide the annual

Thanksgiving Dinners that we

furnish each year. It is our sincere

hope that we will be able to return to

that tradition next year!!

ADVENT GATHERING There have been many requests for another Advent

Gathering this year, but because of the current rise in

COVID cases it will not be held this season. We will try

to have a Gathering next year because it was a lot of

fun creating and being together. I have created Advent

prayers for your home, you can find them on our

website or stop by the office for a copy. There will be

Advent Calendars available at the office. I also have

some supplies left from last year, if you need to create

an Advent Wreath, give me a call. Have a blessed

Advent and be well. Trish

Respect Life On Oct 5, the NJ Bishops released a statement rejecting

the recent announcement of NJ to enact a

“Reproductive Freedom” bill. This legislation would

make abortion legal in all 9 months of pregnancy,

remove any conscience protection laws for the doctors

and nurses involved and make it mandatory for all NJ

insurance companies to cover the abortions. The

Bishops in their statement said “ we urge all Catholics

and people of good will to reject this proposed

legislative initiative in our State and to contact your

State legislators to vigorously express opposition to its

passage”. To reach our state legislators call or email

them asking them to vigorously oppose its passage.
