BELMONT VILLAGE OF OAK PARK
OCTOBER 2017
CornerDirector’s
If you have been in thebuilding the last few months, you are aware of the fact thatwe have been on a mission toraise money and awareness forthe Alzheimer’s Association—adisease that affects many of ourloved ones and we know all toowell at Belmont Village. Thispast weekend wrapped up ourfour month long fundraisingefforts with the Walk to EndAlzheimer’s. The walk took placeat Montrose Harbor in the cityand we had over 12 participantsand one four-legged friend.
Over the last few months ourteam raised over $3000 for theAlzheimer’s Association! Thesedonations came from variousevents. Our first event was anationwide Belmont event calledthe “Bike to End Alzheimer’s.”All 24 communities and ourCorporate office rode stationarybikes for 12 straight hours. TeamOak Park had over 100 riders!
From June to September weheld weekly raffles where theprizes were gift baskets thatwere curated by a member ofour administrative team. Eachbasket really reflected
something our team waspassionate about, whether itwas coffee, wine, relaxation, grilling, fashion or the biggestmoney maker...the ChicagoCubs.
The largest event, of course, was the 3rd Annual BelmontVillage Fashion Show. Thefashion show has grown eachyear and this year we hadresidents from all floorsparticipate. The theme wasRoaring ’20s and we ended theevent with some delicious SideCars. The residents dazzleddown the runway! Below is apicture of Jacqy with myfavorite furry model, FreddieO’Donovan. Thanks to all ofthose who helped ourfundraising efforts.

MEMORY PROGRAMSNEWS
In September, the Circle ofFriends went on a Frank Lloyd
Wright tour led by our very ownElsie Norberg. It was
intellectually and visually verystimulating. In October, the
Neighborhood residents will begoing on the same tour. We alsowent to the Trailside Museum to
see the rescued wild animalsand took a short, invigorating
nature walk topped off by a visitto the Brown Cow for a coolrefreshing ice cream treat.
During September we also heldour annual Fashion Show to
raise money for the Alzheimer’sAssociation. Residents fromevery floor of the buildingstrutted their stuff wearing
fashion from the Roaring ’20s. Itwas amazing and we raised
money for a great cause!

The Connection betweenDiabetes and Alzheimer’sDisease
As scientists work to unravelthe mystery of what reallycauses Alzheimer’s disease, onefactor that continues to comeup is diabetes—specifically type2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is a conditionwhere the body either becomesless able to use insulin orproduces too little insulin (or acombination of both), causing itto be less able to process sugarand turn it into energy.
Type 2 diabetes has typicallybeen considered an adultdisease, although there are morechildren and teenagersdeveloping diabetes now, likelydue to the higher levels ofobesity and sedentary lifestyles.
Type 2 diabetes has ahereditary component, meaningthat if you have family memberswith the disease, you are morelikely to develop it.
Several other factors increaseyour chances of developing type2 diabetes, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, small or largebirth weight and stress.
Research has found that, onaverage, people with diabetesare more likely to demonstrateslower processing speeds andimpaired executive functioning
skills, even without a diagnosisof dementia.
People with type 2 diabetesare significantly more likely todevelop Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and othertypes of dementia. Research hasfound that 50% of those withtype 2 diabetes will go on todevelop dementia.
In one study involving 553participants, twice as manypeople with type 2 diabetesdeveloped dementia (includingAlzheimer’s disease and vasculardementia) as compared to thosewithout diabetes.
An article in the journalNeurology outlined researchthat demonstrated a correlationbetween higher levels of glucosein the body and lower levels ofcognitive functioning. None ofthe 141 participants haddiabetes. But those with chronichigher blood sugar levelsperformed more poorly oncognitive testing and alsoshowed decreases in the sizeand structural changes in thehippocampal area of the brain.
Research has shown thatpeople with well-controlledblood sugar levels can slow oreven prevent cognitive decline, despite the presence ofdiabetes. Some medications forthe treatment of diabetes havedemonstrated effectiveness inproviding good control ofglucose levels as well asimproved cognition in thosewith diabetes.
