The British Crown Jewels contain large blue sapphires, and Prince Charles chose a sapphire engagement ring for Princess Diana. The same ring was later given by their son Prince William to his bride-to-be, Kate Middleton. The word “sapphire” comes from the Latin word “sapphiru,” which means blue. Sapphires belong to the family of minerals known as corundum. They are one of the hardest gemstones, second only to diamonds. Countries that produce sapphires include Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Australia and Madagascar. Natural sapphires often are heated to high temperatures to improve their color and clarity. This day of rest and recreation represents a moment of repose for our country’s laborers, or “a state of resting after exertion or strain; composure of manner, poise,” according to www.Merriam-Webster.com. Whether you prefer to recline outdoors and enjoy picnic refreshments, spend your leisure time at a parade or simply snatch 40 winks on the couch at home, remember to relax!

A Painter of Lightand Dark

The painter MichelangeloMerisi da Caravaggio was born inMilan, Italy, on Sept. 29, 1571.Apprenticed at the age of 11, hejourneyed to Rome around 1592and began impressing art patronswith a series of mythological andallegorical paintings. Caravaggiodeveloped a painting style thatemphasized contrasts betweenlight and shadow, known aschiaroscuro. His depictions ofclassic stories focused on thehumanity of the characters.Caravaggio’s temper constantlycaused him trouble, and he fledRome in 1606 after killing a man.His dramatic style influencedartists such as Rembrandt, Rubensand Delacroix. On Sound FootingThe Health of Your Feet

Your feet are pretty small, considering they have to supportthe entire height and weight of

your body. But they can cause bigproblems. So pay some attention

to your feet. Each step you take involves a

remarkably intricate network ofbones, muscles, tendons andligaments. That complexity—

combined with all the weight theycarry—accounts for why feet can

be so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritisand plantar fasciitis, a swelling ofthe thick band of tissue that runs

along the bottom of the foot.If left untreated, foot problems

may worsen. Eventually, the paincould interfere with your ability todo even the most basic things like

walking up stairs or down thestreet. If pain alters the way youwalk, it can lead to pain in your

knees, hips and back as well. These problems can multiply,

limiting your activity and affectingyour quality of life.

Several things can contribute tofoot pain or numbness. Sportsand physical activity can cause

your feet to hurt or becomenumb. Going too far, too fast ornot warming up properly before

exercise can set you up for painfulor numbing injuries.

Excess weight puts extra stress onyour feet. Poorly fitting shoes and

other footwear are commoncauses of foot problems as well.Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a serious

illness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder. See your health careprovider if you have unusualnumbness in your feet or footpain that is severe, comes on

suddenly, or doesn’t improve withsimple measures such as rest or

over-the-counter painmedications.

You can help keep your feethealthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash your feetregularly (especially between yourtoes), wear clean socks and try to

rotate your shoes to give themtime to air out.

Walking is a great way to exerciseyour feet. You can also try specificfoot exercises. Sit down and rotateyour ankles in one direction, then

the other. In bare feet, sit in achair and curl your toes, thenspread them out. This helps

stretch and strengthen your feet tohelp you balance.
