It’s a day for celebration, for red, white and blue, and for fireworks and hot dogs cooked on the grill. July days are long and warm, with memories of backyard swimming pools, fishing trips, campouts and other pastimes that belong to summers gone by. July is also the month my wife and I married. She wanted to have the wedding in July so that we could have a summer wedding by the beach. She planned for months and finally settled on the perfect ocean front location in Palos Verdes Estates. It was to be her dream summer wedding in the California sun. The week leading up to our wedding was perfect, 80-degree summer sun without a cloud in the July sky. The stage was set and July 10, 2010, was our big summer day. I will never forget waking up to pouring rain that July 10 morning. The sky was terribly overcast and the rain was unrelenting. My mother insisted that rain on your wedding day was good luck, but my wife was devastated. I refused to let the rain wreck the day and we carried on with the wedding as planned. It turned out to be a wonderful wedding, rain and all. We were happily married in the summer rain that July brings to California once every 100 years. No matter what you like to celebrate, keep in mind that the warm weather is usually perfect for just about anything you want to do outside, and that summer only lasts a little while. Don’t let yourself miss out on all the great things you can do outdoors when the birds wake you up with the early sunrise and the daylight stretches well into the evening.

Depression in older adultsand the elderly

The changes that often come inlater life—retirement, the death ofloved ones, increased isolation, and medical problems—can leadto depression. Depressionprevents you from enjoying lifelike you used to. But its effects gofar beyond mood. It also impactsyour energy, sleep, appetite andphysical health. However, depression is not an inevitablepart of aging, and there are manysteps you can take to overcomethe symptoms, no matter thechallenges you face.

Signs and symptoms ofdepression:

- Sadness- Fatigue- Abandoning or losing interest

in hobbies or other pleasurablepastimes

- Social withdrawal andisolation (reluctance to be withfriends, engage in activities, orleave home)

- Weight loss or loss of appetite- Sleep disturbance (difficulty

falling asleep, oversleeping, ordaytime sleeplessness)

- Loss of self-worth (worriesbeing a burden, feeling ofworthlessness, self-loathing)

- Increase use of alcohol orother drugs

- Fixation on death, suicidalthoughts or attempts.

Managing depression self-helpfor older adults and elderly

It is a myth to think that after acertain age you can’t learn newskills, try new activities or makefresh lifestyle changes. The truth isthat the human brain neverstopped changing, so older adultsare just as capable as youngerpeople of learning new things andadapting to new ideas.Overcoming often involvesfinding new things you enjoy, learning to adapt to change, staying physically and sociallyactive, and feeling connected toyour community and loved ones.If you are depressed, you may notwant to do anything or seeanybody. But isolation andinactivity only make depressionworse. The more active you are—physically, mentally andsocially—the better you will feel.

- Exercise. - Physical activityhas powerful mood-boostingeffects.

- Connect with others face toface whenever possible. -Gettingthe support you need plays a bigrole in lifting the fog ofdepression and keeping it away.

- Get enough sleep. - Aim forsomewhere between seven tonine hours of sleep each night.

- Maintain a healthy diet. -Avoid eating too much sugarand junk food. Choose healthyfoods that provide nourishmentand energy, and take a dailymultivitamin.

- Participate in activities youenjoy. - Pursue whateverhobbies or pastimes bring orused to bring you joy.

- Volunteer your time. -Helping others is one of the bestways to feel better aboutyourself and expand your socialnetwork.

- Take care of a pet. - A petcan keep you company, andwalking a dog, for example, canbe a good exercise for you andgreat way to meet people.

- Learn a new skill. - Picksomething that you’ve alwayswanted to learn, or that sparksyour imagination and creativity.

- Create opportunities tolaugh. - Laughter provides amood boost, so swap humorousstories with your loved ones, watch a comedy, or read a funnybook.

June was Alzheimer’s and BrainAwareness Month. In June theNeighborhood learned some newways to help protect againstfurther cognitive decline.Scientists now know enough tomake two key recommendations.First is that regular physicalactivity and management ofcardiovascular risk factors(diabetes, obesity, smoking andhypertension) have been shownto reduce the risk of cognitivedecline and may reduce the risk ofdementia. Second is a healthy dietand lifelong learning/cognitivetraining. If you take these factors,it creates a recipe for the greatestbenefits. In the Neighborhood we

practice both of these factors everyday—with physical therapyleading exercise and healthywell-balanced foods at each meal.We also do cognitive training inthe form of activities to help boostmemory. The Neighborhood willcontinue to practice these goodhabits for the rest of the summer!
