Happy New Years to everyone! It seems like we blinked for a second and all of a sudden here we are— 2016! I am excited about the year and what it holds for all of us... hopefully prosperity, wealth, and good health are at the top of the list! I know how generous each of you are with both your time and your resources, and I would like to personally thank all of the families and residents on behalf of our management team and hourly staff for being so generous in giving to the Employee Holiday Fund. Your generosity enabled our staff to create great memories and a wonderful holiday for their families during the holidays in a really difficult time in our country. Giving always feels wonderful— and our staff was so grateful that you helped them provide for their families. Thanks a hundred times over! It’s GOAL setting time! After eating all of the scrumptious holiday food and treats since November - it’s time to come back down to earth (and reality) and realign our priorities to get our bodies back in line. We can do it—we just need a little encouragement (as well as a buddy to work out with) for those moments we don’t feel so motivated. Pick your favorite work out location and let’s get started! Speaking of working out... Belmont Village offers a “Mind Body Awareness” (MBA) to help us achieve the goals that we set for ourselves. It’s a research-based program designed to maintain brain health and long-term wellness in senior residents. Studies have indicated that a combination of specially designed activities that engage mind, body, and spirit contribute to a healthy brain and overall well being. Our MBA program uses a holistic approach that includes activities and lifestyles choices in four areas of daily activity: mental fitness, physical exercise, and nutrition, spiritual and creative thinking. The program is available to all residents, and is offered as a Club to build the interest and commitment of residents in joining the program and experiencing a fun, interactive way to meet mental and physical fitness goals. Don’t get so wrapped up in the many sporting events on television and around the city that you forget to make time to work out. ...continued on page two

Many cultures havesuperstitions. We’ve learned not towalk under a ladder, to avoidopen umbrellas indoors, and toshake salt over our shoulder in theevent of a spill.

Far be it from us to risk startingthe new year off badly! Chef Steveand his crew will prepare all the“Lucky Foods” we eat to ensure aprosperous and happy new year.

On January 1, 2016 our NewYears Luncheon from 11:00 -1:00 p.m. will feature black eyedpeas, corned beef, green cabbage.Let’s not tempt fate! And enjoy adelicious luncheon in themeantime!

Each year we find variousorganizations to help during theholidays. This year we chose Louisville MetroAnimal Shelter. Since 1963, thisShelter has housed over 10,000 petsannually, providing physical care, housing, love, and hopefully foreverfamily homes.Residents, family members, and staffdonated an “overflowing” amountof goodies for our furry friends!Jessica Montgomery, Director ofMetro Animal Shelter, attended ourHoliday Open House and spoke to usabout their new shelter and hopesfor providing care for moreadoptable pets. She, and Bella ourCommunity Dog, gave a huge“Thank You” to all for their donations!

Humor and HealthJanuary’s winter doldrums

paired with the post-holiday bluescan start to wear on a person.Perhaps that’s why Global BellyLaugh Day is celebrated eachJan. 24.

What’s so great about laughter? To begin with, it’s a great way tobond with other people whileimproving your own mood. Themore you laugh, the more resilientyou are to negative events.Laughter is great for your health, too. It burns calories and raisesthe heart rate, like a mildworkout.

A good laugh also releasestension and stress and increasesyour immunity andinfection-fighting antibodies.

So start laughing!

Planning to exercise more oreat fewer sweets in the NewYear? If so, you’re taking part ina tradition that stretches backthousands of years.

Ancient people over 6,000years ago practiced the fine art ofNew Year’s resolutions.

Today New Year’s resolutionsmay be falling out of favor. ACBS News poll in 2013 foundthat 68 percent of Americansdon’t make New Year’sresolutions. Two years ago, thatnumber was 58 percent. Peopleunder the age of 30 were morelikely than older folks to makeresolutions — but only abouthalf of resolution-makers keeptheir promises.

The six most commonresolutions? Quit smoking, getting fit and losing weight, stop drinking, enjoying lifemore, getting out of debt andfinally spending more time withfamily.

Do any of those resonate withyou? If so, what are YOUR oddsfor seeing them through theyear? What is it that motivatesthose that DO stay with theirgoals? Something internal? Achange in attitude? Anawakening? A newdetermination?

Whatever it is, surely we canadhere to even the gentlest ofgoals - kindness and compassionto others - that would have themost impact to not onlyourselves but the world at large.

Circle of Friends NewsThe Circle of Friends has had

the great fortune to have on ourteam one of our ActivitiesAssistants, Hailee Riney, who is aPsychology student at IUS, tocome up with some newprogramming concepts. Lastmonth she completed areminiscence therapy projectwhere she interviewed severalCOF residents using theStoryCorps app.

This free app allows you toverbally record an interview andyou can then send the audio filein an email or text message. Thethought behind this program wasto expand the knowledge that wehave about our residents to betterperform person-centered care. Inaddition, this app provides a greatgift to Belmont families who canshare this audio recording withtheir families for years to come. What a gift it is to be able to hearsomeone’s voice and their historyat the push of a button! And itallows the resident to give voice totheir experience in their ownwords.

We are so proud to offer thisnew program at Belmont. If youare interested in learning moreabout this new initiative, pleasecontact me for additionalinformation. In addition to thegreat work of Hailee, our residentshave been very active contributingto charitable organizations withinthe community.

Last month, the residents madedoggy bags filled with delicioustreats to deliver to Animal CareSociety. They enjoyed deliveringtheir donation in person and gotto meet some kittens and a puppyavailable for adoption. We alsocollected Christmas cards andwrote messages in them for ouractive duty military that are awayat the holidays. The cards weremailed to the American Heroesprogram via the AmericanRed Cross.

Lastly, the residents made itemsto sell at our annual HolidayOpen House as a fundraiser forthe Alzheimer’s Association. Andwhile it is the season to both GIVEand to RECEIVE, we are verygrateful for all the volunteers whohave come to spend time with us,including a group of middleschool girls from SoutheastChristian who assisted us withmaking holiday ornaments andthe carolers from the UofL Schoolof music who sang so beautifullythroughout the community.

I hope that you continue tohave a joyous winter and a blessed2016!
