THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE AT CARDIFF BY THE SEA FEBRUARY 2018 SADIE’S CORNER Happy Valentine’s Day! We are so blessed by the mild weather in San Diego, which allows us to sit outside and go for walks on the beach. Many of our residents enjoy biweekly walks in the park. Any way you slice it, Vitamin D is in abundance here! 2018 started with a bang for us at Belmont Village. We kicked off with a new round of illness. At the end of our quarantine we had 53 residents treated with Tamiflu, 35 residents that were actually sick, and 17 staff members fall ill. The illnesses varied, but the notable ones were the Influenza A and the gastro-intestinal illness. I sent out daily updates to family with listed email addresses. If you haven’t submitted your email, and would like periodic correspondence from Belmont, please email me at [email protected]. Our infection control process greatly contributed to the swift eradication of illness. We closed the dining room and suspended activities. Family members were asked to refrain from taking loved ones out of the community. Believe it or not, the safest place for residents during an illness is in their apartment. The staff did rounds with a bleach-like solution, disinfecting surfaces throughout the community. Kudos to the PALs in particular, who went out of their way every day for our sick and infirm residents. Many thanks to all. Also in January, two of our staff members traveled to Houston as a reward for the Bright Ideas contest. Katrina B. (driver) and Jazmin A. (Server), were 2 of 5 finalists out of 200 entries company wide. Each presented her idea, in PowerPoint format, in front of Patricia Will (founder and CEO) and the leadership team. Jazmin’s idea was to provide on-site childcare as an employee benefit. Katrina’s idea was called, “A Day In The Life.” She wants to create 1 minute video clips of each front line job: PAL, Server, housekeeper, Concierge, etc., to show at orientation to create better communication and empathy among team members. Both women did a phenomenal job presenting, and Katrina won! Katrina’s idea will be implemented across all 25 communities in 2018. And as her prize, she gets a trip to Puerto Vallarta in February! Congratulations to both our superstars for a job exceptionally well done! LOVE STORIESI say February is for Love, not

just for Lovers. Typically, thismonth we reminisce about ourValentines past and ourcherished memories of Love. Our trip down “Lover’s Lane” ledme to the question...Was it Loveat First Sight?

The first “Romeo,” I posedthis question to, was Carroll S.His answer was, “I know it waslove, but maybe not at firstsight. She was absolutelybeautiful and maybe it was herlooks that lured me in. Her fathernamed her Marion, I believe hethought she was going to be aboy! We were married for 62 yrsand she raised 2 successful, beautiful children on her ownand I was out playing on ‘Boats!’(Carroll was the Chief PettyOfficer in the Navy) She was agreat cook and I can still smellher famous roast beef withpeeled potatoes.

I then cornered Kathy andGary G. with the same questionand it was if Kathy knew what Iwas going to ask her. She said,“It was on July 12, 1964, I hadjust graduated high school. Myfriend Nina and her boyfriendand Gary were going to thebeach and I snuck out of thehouse to go with them, I didn’ttell my mother. Gary drove us allin his car and we spent theentire day at the beach. Wenever went in the water thoughbecause of a reported shark

sighting. We started dating afterthat and the rest is history.

The next contestant was AmyF. She had first encountered EdF. when she boarded a bus inHonolulu after the war ended. She stepped on the bus and inthe back were 3 military mensmiling and laughing. Shethought well, it had been a whilesince they had seen a woman, much less a woman who was anofficer! Fast forward to yearslater when Amy was in graduateschool at Duke University andwas working with the Head ofPublic Relations who wasEdward F. He asked her out 2times before they finally went ona first date to the movie ‘AnnieGet Your Gun’. He told Amy thatthey had met years ago on thatbus in Honolulu and it was Loveat First Sight for him. They weremarried almost 60 years and itwas laughter and adventure thewhole way!

Lastly, I asked Al C. about hisAnne. His nickname for her was“Spitfire!” His answer to myquestion was “Absolutely! Shewas my one and only, my wholelife. I was 16 years old and Annewas 14. She had snuck out of herhouse for us to go to themovies. We were smart enoughto go in separately, so no onewould see us together. WhenAnne went home she told hermom she had met the boy shewas going to marry.” They weremarried for 68 blissful years!

NURSE’S NOTEFEBRUARY ISAMERICAN HEARTMONTH

Let us celebrate with “EatRed with Heart Health”

It’s time to amend that “applea day” aphorism. Tomatoes andcranberries keep the doctoraway, too. New research showsthat incorporating these 3 red, round fruits into your daily dietcan reduce your risk of heartdisease by as much as 40percent. A heart healthy diet isalways the first step in treatinghigh cholesterol or high bloodpressure. Fortunately, theantioxidant-rich fruits (apples, tomatoes, cranberries) are tastyas they are healthy.

TOMATOES A new study byTufts University in Bostonshowed that eatinglycopene-rich foods such astomatoes more than 5x a week

over an 11 year period reducedcoronary disease risk by 26%.

APPLES An apple a day canreduce LDL (bad cholesterol) byas much as 40%, according to anew small Ohio State Universitystudy. Be sure to munch on thefruit, rather than drink juice, thepeels house the mostantioxidant.

CRANBERRIES Drinking 3cups of cranberry juice daily canraise HDL (good) cholesterollevels by 10% and reduce heartdisease by 40%, a study at theUniversity of Scranton inPennsylvania showed. Plus, thisjuice decreased diet-causedatherosclerosis (clogging of thearteries) by preventing plaquefrom forming.

GO, GO, RED!

NEIGHBORHOODNEWS

January kicked off the newyear with challenges for all of us.A quarantine measure was put inplace to prevent the spread ofharmful germs. This solution isespecially important in the closequarters of the neighborhood. That proximity also allowed usto keep close monitoring ofsymptoms. In the Village, ourresidents enjoyed one-on-oneactivities with our staff. Ourresidents, family, and staffmembers were incrediblygracious with assisting us tokeep residents healthy. Thankyou so much for the constantsupport. Looking ahead,February brings so muchexcitement! We have Valentine’sDay to celebrate! On February14th, we will deliver valentines aspart of an activity for ourresidents. Feel free to send acard or note along and we willdistribute them to your familymember. If you are planning tovisit with grandkids, we will havea fun picture frame project todo. Please bring a photo to addto the frame, your loved one cankeep it or you can take it home.Food is another endearing wayto celebrate Valentine’s Day. “You have to remember thatmany people wanted to dosomething,” Aaron S. said. “Onthe radio, you would hear aboutthe protests. I was pleased whenthe Supreme Court made stridesfor equal rights.”

Not only will COF celebrateAfrican Americans this month, but also Valentine’s Day with aSweetheart tea party onFebruary 14 in the CFL room at1:30 p.m.

We welcome Noah S. to theEnrichment Leader team! Noahvalues the personal interactionswith his residents.

“We were on a scenic rideand Rusty had just come backfrom the NBH,” Noah said. “Wehad a great time talking on thebus about his military career. Heasked me for my business cardsaying I was a good guy andwould want to work with me inthe future. This made sense asMereani said he was abusinessman for many years.Rusty is a character when hespeaks. It’s almost as if music isplaying when he talks.”
