THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF SUNNYVALE NOVEMBER 2017 By: Radhika Singh Executive Director Thanksgiving is the time where we stop and recognize the goodness of what we have. It is also one of my most favorite times of the year. When I think of Thanksgiving, a few words come to mind: hope, love, faith and thanks. A few years ago, I started a new tradition with my family, which takes place right before the Thanksgiving feast begins. Each Thanksgiving we go around the room and say one or two things we are thankful for. When I look back to when we first started this tradition and think of how the responses have become more thoughtful each year, I think about the love, faith, hope and the thanks we all share. Love is an unconditional feeling. Faith is complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Thanks is an expression of gratitude. All of these words to me summarize Belmont Village of Sunnyvale. The staff, residents and families all collectively embody these words through their actions each and every day. Take a moment and reflect on everything you are thankful for. What are you thankful for? As I walk around the community, I think about how thankful I am for the staff, residents and families I run into each day. Belmont Village of Sunnyvale is truly my second family. The staff here is remarkable and I cannot thank them enough for all their hard work each and every day. The impact all of you (staff, residents and families) have made in my life is unexplainable, and I am thankful! Thank you! Employee Appreciation Fund As we enter into the holiday season, we know that many of you would like to show our employees your appreciation for all of the hard work they do throughout the year. As you know, we ask that you do not tip our staff, but every year at this time we establish an Employee Appreciation Fund that is comprised of the generous donations from our residents and families. The donations from the fund are disbursed to all non-management staff. If you have any questions about the Employee Appreciation Fund, please contact me. I will be sending a letter to all families with more information in the upcoming weeks to follow. Happy Thanksgiving! CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

By: Kathy NguyenMemory Programs Coordinator

In November, the residents ofthe Circle of Friends programwill be immersed in aviationhistory, where the dream offlight started with kites andgliders to heavier-than-air andspacecrafts. As old as the thirdcentury, the use of buoyancyoccurred on unmanned flights.Hot air balloons were used formilitary purposes such assignaling or to scare awayenemy troops. Through thedesire to analyze theatmosphere during the 17th and18th centuries, hydrogen gaswas discovered and turned intohydrogen balloons. Manytheories in mechanics such asfluid dynamics and Newton’sLaw of Motion created apathway to modernaerodynamics. By the early 20thcentury, engine technologicaladvancements along withaerodynamics provided a wayfor controlled, powered flight tobecome a reality. GUIDELINES FOR AHEALTHIERTHANKSGIVING

Many of us see our waistlinesexpand during the Holidays. Most people gain at least apound during the holidays. Some will keep that weight onpermanently.

So be the man or woman witha plan. With a little knowledgeyou can indulge in traditionalholiday cooking and still stay fitand healthy.

KEEP MOVING:Eat less and exercise moreduring the holidays to preventweight gain. In addition tostaying active, try to avoidsitting for prolonged periods oftime such as watching footballgames. Too much sitting ishazardous to your health. Try tokeep with your fitness routine. Itis recommended by experts towork out in the morning toavoid being distracted later inthe day with parties or relatives.

STAY HYDRATED:Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily.Your brain can sometimesconfuse thirst with hunger. Alarge glass of water before ameal (especially beforeconsidering seconds) can helplessen the amount you consume.Drink 2 big glasses before thebig feast.

INDULGE FOR A NIGHT, NOTA SEASON:It is easy to overindulge with aseason of parties and leftovers.Do not let treats or leftoverslinger in your house. When theparty is over, dump the junk!

REMEMBER IT’S A SINGLEDAY:If you eat too much on thissingle day, the reality is that oneday won’t make or break yourhealth plan. It is when peoplestart a pattern of daily treats orskip exercise and that continuesfrom Thanksgiving through theend of the year. Don’t let oneday of indulgence turn into amonth of indulgence.

Happy Thanksgiving!
