Words to Live by. . .We can’t help growing old, butwe don’t have to become aged.Becoming aged means losing
interest in life.
April’s Flower-DaisyApril’s flower is the daisy,
which has long been a favorite ofgardeners everywhere. Daisies arebeautiful, but they are also veryeasy to care for and will grow justabout anywhere. Daisies are foundeverywhere in the world exceptAntarctica. Just add water and sun,and these little sunbursts addsome brightness to any garden.
The daisy’s Latin name, Bellis
Perennis, translates to “everlastingbeauty,” revealing just howcherished this blossom has beenthroughout the years. Because oftheir pure white color, they are asymbol of innocence and areconsidered the flower of children.
Daisies are edible and can beused in sandwiches, soups, andsalads. The leaves can be found inpotpourri and can be brewed tomake an herbal tea. Daisies alsohave been used in homeopathicmedicine. Because of theirastringent properties, they havebeen used to treat skin infectionsand wounds.

We Salute You,Caregivers
Think of the word “caregiver”and you’re unlikely to questionhow the term got its name. To
care is “to be concerned” and togive is to “offer to another.”Someone who offers their
concerns for another iscompassionate, kindhearted andundoubtedly needed. For all the
things caregivers do, fromassisting with everyday tasks to
providing companionship and alistening ear, they deserve much
praise. We offer a heartfeltthanks and a special salute to all
the caregivers in ourcommunity!

The New Activity MemoryPrograms Coordinator
I can’t thank the staff, families andresidents enough for the warmwelcome I have received since
returning to Belmont Village. Yourappreciation of what I bring to the
Activities program means morethan you know. I come with 15+years of experience in the field of
gerontology, specializing indementia care. I have worked in
the areas of nursing home, assisted living and adult daycare
as a caregiver, as well asmanagement positions. Beinginvolved in activities with the
residents, no matter what positionI held, was and continues to be
important to me. I have come torealize a successful activities
program is vital to the success ofthe community. This realizationhas increased my understandingof the importance of activities inthe daily life of an individual. A
person who is engaged, physicallyand mentally stimulated andautonomy-supported stays in
place longer, which contributes tothe success of that individual andtherefore the success of the facilityin which they live. I look forwardto getting to know each of you as
we do life together.Respectfully,Teri Girardeau
Drink It All InMost people know it is importantto stay hydrated and that water is
the best choice to accomplish that. But do you know why? Our
bodies are about 70 percent water, and it is a part of every cell. Hereare a few ways water works in the
human body:Joints. Water is a component of the
synovial fluid in our joints. Thefluid acts as a shock absorber, removes waste and nourishes
cartilage.Transport. Water transports the
minerals, vitamins, amino acids, salts, sugars and fats that our cells
need to function properly. Ourblood, which distributes nutrients,
oxygen and antibodies, is about83 percent water.
Metabolism. Water is essential forour body to build the “metabolic
pathways” that convert foodinto energy.
Brain health. Our brains are about80 percent water, and our nervesare filled with fluid that is almost
entirely made up of water andminerals. Dehydration impedesthe ability of nerves to send and
receive messages.Joint pain, back pain, headaches,
low energy levels, muscleweakness and lightheadedness canall be caused by dehydration. Get
in the habit of drinking water witheach meal and between meals.
Your body will thank you.
Diabetes EpidemicDiabetes is a leading cause of
kidney failure, blindness, amputations, heart disease and
stroke. Nearly 24 millionAmericans have diabetes and
about 5.7 million of them don’tknow that they have the disease.
Millions more are at risk ofdeveloping diabetes.
Due to the epidemic in the UnitedStates and in the rest of the world, there is a critical need for diabetes
educators and other health careprofessionals to provide educationand care to people with and at riskfor diabetes. Some early indicatorsof diabetes may include increasedhunger, unexplained weight loss,
and frequent urination. It issometimes difficult to notice footproblems because uncontrolled
diabetes may damage nerves. Eyeproblems, heart disease, and highblood pressure are often seen inindividuals with diabetes. If younotice that you have any of these
symptoms, it is important thatyou notify one of our nurses and
ultimately your physician toreceive the proper care.
