BELMONT VILLAGE OF ST. MATTHEWS
JANUARY 2018
NOTES FROM TEDHappy 2018 to each of you!
WOW! Didn’t I just say Happy2017 the other day? Where didthe year go..... I think it must betrue that time speeds up as weage. Which leads me to thinkingof the importance of treasuringthe days we have. January isNational Happiness Month. Iread an article “Life’s Keys toHappiness” and I’d like to sharesome of it with you.
“Don’t worry, be happy” is anexcellent reminder to alwaysseek happiness, but the songmay not be completely realisticin every life situation. Worryingis a part of life and happiness isnot something you can pull outof a hat. Ultimately it’s up to youto create it for yourself. Applythese universal ingredients tohelp you unlock that happiness:
Sense of Humor: The ability toseek and find humor andlaughter in any given situation isa gift you give yourself, but italso takes work. The ability togain a new perspective on a badsituation through humor is a realtestament to our character. Lookfor humor and use it to gainperspective, to reduce stressand make others smile.
Learn: Learning doesn’t endwhen you retire. Life seems tobe one long lesson plan of
learning from life experiences. The key to always learning is tonot be opposed to it. Whenyou’re open to new ideas you’reexercising and enriching yourmind. When you don’t learn fromboth positive or negativesituations, there’s no self growth.
Resiliency: Learning andresilience go hand in handbecause we learn from lifeexperiences then must move on.This ability to bounce back isresilience, and the human spiritis more resilient than we mighttend to believe. Live in thepresent the best you know how.Living in the past robs the joy ofbeing in the moment.
Courage: Life is scary, wenever know what comes next.Nothing is certain, so take risks.Without courage to face yourfears or the possibility ofrejection you become stagnantand limit opportunities for selfgrowth.
Meaning and Purpose: Whatmakes you tick, gives your heartjoy, makes you smile? What areyou doing that satisfies yourselfand others? The accumulation ofour life experiences, when wefind our meaning in life andpursue and sustain it, allows usto know what it means tobe “living.”

Health: Intact mental andphysical health allows forpossibility to enter your life.Health and happiness areobviously interconnectedbecause it’s difficult to feelhappy when your body hurts. Ittakes personal effort to workthrough the pain (will exercisehelp? changing food habits?) asworking for your health is anongoing, lifelong process.
Happiness isn’t guaranteed inlife. You have to make it happenfor yourself. Using these keyswill hopefully help you findyour way.
Feel free to stop by my officeany time to visit or just say “hi!”Blessings to each of you thiscoming New Year.

JANUARY - THEOTHER KING’SBIRTHDAY (ELVISTHAT IS)
January celebrates the birthof the King of Rock and Roll -Elvis Presley.
We thought it would be fun touse him as the inspiration for ourJanuary themed meal:
Elvis & Memphis BluesWe’ll start the afternoon right
with the King himself (Yes, helooks great for 82!) performingat 3:00 in the Great Room.
Chef Steve and Chef Jeff willfollow up with a special mealfeaturing some of Elvis’ favoritefoods:
Of course we have to have• Fried Peanut Butter and
banana sandwich (using thePaula Dean version thatadds some honey andcinnamon)
• Fried Pickles• Southern Fried Corn• Sweet Potato Cream
Cheese PieFor those of us watching our
calories - I’d suggest ordering afresh salad from the menu!
We have a wonderfulresident, Martha, who alwayscomes up with the mostintriguing questions. Wethought we’d share some withyour inquiring minds and whatwe found out about the answers:
Was Jesus actually born onDecember 25?
Theologians have suggestedthat Jesus was born in thespring, based on the biblicalnarrative that shepherds werewatching over their flocks in thefields on the night of Jesus’ birth— something they would havedone in the spring. The precisereason why Christmas came tobe celebrated on December 25remains obscure, but mostresearchers believe thatChristmas originated as aChristian substitute for pagancelebrations of the wintersolstice.
What is “Belsnickle?”This German ‘giver of gifts’
was known by many differentnames. The word Belsnickleoriginated from a German termmeaning “Nicholas dressed infur.” These stoic figures havehunched backs, large faces withprominent long beards, and theirhands are often drawn into theirsleeves and held closely to theirbodies. Belsnickle would showup at the home of children, unannounced and not saying aword, just looking stern, causingthe children to behave all yearlong, giving candy and fruit ifthey were good.

A major portion of the concept ofSenior Living is that seniors are withtheir peers in an engagingenvironment that encouragesparticipation with friends, spirituality, learning new things andhaving fun.
My job is to help you meet thatgoal. But I need YOUR help to dothis. I’ve scheduled a series ofluncheons where I hope you willhelp me explore what our optionsare. They will be on severalThursdays at 11:30 in the TownHall. I’ll host with Papa John’s pizzaand soft drinks.

DAY OF SERVICEMartin Luther King Jr. once
proposed, “Life’s most persistentand urgent question is: ‘What areyou doing for others?’” HonorKing’s legacy by volunteering on theannual holiday and national day ofservice. Join us when we have ourHelping Hands giving back to ourCommunity.
NEIGHBORHOODAND CIRCLE OFFRIENDS
December was a wonderfulmonth - not only has ourCommunity looked warm, cheerful and full of Holiday Spirit- but we had many familiesvisiting to help spread thatcheer!
We had numerous scout andchurch groups with visitingchildren caroling throughout.
The Cheerleaders of a localhigh school asked to visit andthe girls made handmadeornaments and cards with ourNeighborhood residents.
The Circle of Friends enjoyedseveral outings, from lunch tothe Mega Cavern for their lightshow to an evening about thecity to see Holiday displays.
We look forward to learningnew things in January - a chanceto reflect on what our past has
brought us as well as what ourfriends and neighbors haveshared with us.
We always encourage familymembers to join us on either anouting or one of our groupactivities. Or share a hot cup ofcocoa with your loved one bythe fireplace.
Please see me any time andwe’ll make it happen! TheHappiest of 2018 to you andyours.

MUSINGS FROM THEEDITOR
Well, it’s finally happened. I’vegrown to “dislike” the physicaleffects of winter. My hands andfeet are cold and to avoid a$250 heat bill I wear layers ofclothing and even a scarf in myhome! The multitude of graydays certainly affects ourmoods, whining for the warmthof spring.
Yet, I keep coming back towhat Henry David Thoreau said:
“Live in each season as itpasses; breathe the air, drinkthe drink, taste the fruit andresign yourself to the influenceof each.”
Which challenges me to lookat the purpose behind winter. The winter season is the perfecttime to explore within and takea closer look at our personalchoices. From inside the warmcocoon of our homes we havean opportunity to appreciate thegood things in our lives. Like
gardeners poring over seedcatalogues, winter is a time toplan the coming year and plantthe seeds of future goals forthe spring.
Winter is also a time to sharewith others. Daylight hours arevery short, making it a special
time to find ways to bringlight indoors. Long winterevenings are a great time to sitaround our fireplace in the GreatRoom with family and friendswith a warm cup of tea, sharing
stories and laughs. When I take Winter walks, I
am amazed at the dark outlineof our trees against the sky, realizing they too arehibernating, preparingthemselves for the coming year.
So, are you up to thechallenge? To not complainabout this season, but toembrace it with all the hopeit contains?
Blessings to each, KathrynRay, Programming Coordinator

JANUARY BOOKCLUB BOOK
Mr. Churchill’s Secretarycaptures the drama of an era ofunprecedented challenge--and thegreatness that rose to meet it.London, 1940. Winston Churchillhas just been sworn in, war ragesacross the Channel, and the threat ofa Blitz looms larger by the day. Butnone of this deters Maggie Hope. She graduated at the top of hercollege class and possesses all theskills of the finest minds in Britishintelligence, but her gender qualifiesher only to be the newest typist atNo. 10 Downing Street. Herindefatigable spirit and remarkablegifts for code-breaking, though, rivalthose of even the highest men ingovernment, and Maggie finds thatworking for the prime ministeraffords her a level of clearance shecould never have imagined--andopportunities she will not let pass.
If you’d like to join our bookclub and receive your free copy ofthis book, please notify theConcierge. Some large-print booksare available.
