Greetings residents andfamilies,

Happy New Year and welcometo 2017! As we enter the start of anew year, I wanted to share a fewof the exciting moments that wecelebrated here at BelmontVillage, Hollywood in 2016.

We started 2016 with a bangwhen Belmont Village was therecipient of the prestigious Best ofthe Best Award for our Circle ofFriends® program at the 2016Argentum’s national conference.

Founded in 1990, Argentum isthe leading national tradeassociation serving companiesthat own, operate, and supportprofessionally managed seniorliving communities in the UnitedStates. Their Best of the Best awardsrecognize innovative programsand services that advanceexcellence in senior living. So weare very proud of this wonderfulhonor and accomplishment.

Additionally, we are happy toshare that our renovation projectsare close to completion. At thewriting of this newsletter we areanticipating our new memoryneighborhood on the secondfloor to be open and operatingby December 28. With the

completion of the new theater,computer lab, games area andbilliards room expansion on theground floor anticipated early inJanuary 2017. We are tentativelyplanning a HUGE celebration ofour 15 year anniversary and grandopening of our newly renovatedsecond and ground floors onFebruary 1st, 2017. So stay tunedfor more updates about this eventas we get closer to the endof January.

I would like to extend a hugethanks to residents and familieswho contributed so generously toour annual Employee HolidayFund. We had an increase in thenumber of donations received in2016, and as a result many of ouremployees received a lovely andhelpful additional contribution totheir house-hold through theholidays. Thanks also to Dr. RickRatcliffe who is our ResidentCouncil Chair for his dedicationand assistance with thecommunicating and helping tocoordinate the Employee HolidayFund process with us. And, a bigpersonal thank you to AileenZeidman in the Admin office forall her assistance with managingthe fund bank deposits anddistribution to our staff at theirHoliday party on December 19.

Happy New year from theCircle of Friends andNeighborhood Residents! Januaryis a month filled with excitementbecause not only is it a time forgoal setting but also a time forreflection; as we set goals for theup and coming year we also reflecton the previous year and all theaccomplishments that wereachieved. I think as a communitywe achieved many goals but thereare still many more to be reached.This year we are really going tofocus in on resident safety for allthe residents that reside in ourcommunity along with continuingto build our activity program-ming. As many know, our Circleof Friends and Neighborhoodprogramming was established as a

national award winning programthis past year and throughout allthe Belmont’s we want to donothing but build upon thatstandard and continue toimprove. Watch out 2017! This isgoing to be a great year!

January:National Bath Safety Month“A common area where seniors

often end up having accidents is fallsin the bathroom, and helping preventthose kinds of accidents is whatJanuary’s National Bath SafetyMonth is about.” (1) “Over 75% ofslip-fall deaths happen to people whoare 65 years and above.” (2) A studypoints out that one-third of falls occurat home in the bathroom. With thesmooth surfaces and moisture ofwater, this can equal a risky place forfalls. An average of 370 people (allage groups) suffers falls or injuries inthe bathtub or shower each day. Thisis the second leading cause ofaccidental deaths or disabilities.

Complications such as medicationside-effects, reduced physical abilityand diminished vision arecontributing factor to falls in theolder person. Here are some safetytips to help you while in thebathroom:

• Look out for slippery areas,keep floor clean and dry

• Look out for areas that aredifficult to move about

• Identify areas that pose athreat, avoid obstacles, avoidelectrical outlets

• Utilize grab bars, showerbenches and non-skid bath mats

• Utilize a portable, hand-heldshower head

• Test the water temperaturebefore you get in, making sureit is not too hot.

• Utilize your call light system inyour bathroom if you needassistance. Your BelmontVillage nursing team is thereto assist you

With Vida’s departurewe have been able to welcomeour new Director of ResidentCare Services (DRCS), AnashehSatoorian. Anasheh comes to usfrom Belmont Village Westwoodwere she was a StaffingCoordinator and then DRCS intraining. She is anaccomplished, well respectednurse and manager, and I amthrilled to have her on our teamhere at Hollywood. If you havenot met Anasheh yet, please feelfree to drop by our 3rd floorAdmin Office.

As I mention each month, Iwould like to welcome newresidents to our community inDecember and January. We hopethat you enjoy living here withus; and that as you settle in youwill join in the various activitiesand resident meetings that takeplace each month.
