The food was good, the air-conditioning was working and the power never once faltered. There were activities all over the building, tornado warnings late at night, a slumber party in the Town Hall for PALS, patio furniture in the swimming pool and Saturday afternoon entertainment during a lull in the rain. An unprecedented 58" of rain fell in Houston during Hurricane Harvey. It was at times difficult to keep things upbeat when the rain kept pouring and it was unsettling to watch television at night while events unfolded around us. Then the stories started coming in from everywhere—of rescues made before first responders even arrived on the scene, of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, of neighbors looking out for neighbors, of strangers risking their lives for strangers, pet rescues, boat rescues and offers of help from all over the world. In our world, employees waded through water to get to work. Many of them worked 12 days straight to provide 24/7 coverage for employees who were surrounded by flood waters. They slept on air mattresses in electrical rooms and never questioned why they were there. They knew. They had a job to do and people to protect. Well done, storm riders, very well done. “spooktacular” video, Halloween parade and the monster mash willresurface as never before seen. Community service will reappear aswe make our way to Kids’ Meals with hand-painted pumpkins. Lookfor several guest speakers and perhaps an equine visit. As always,

our village is blessed and life is good.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

THE CONNECTIONBETWEEN DIABETESAND ALZHEIMER’SDISEASE

As scientists work to unravelthe mystery of what reallycauses Alzheimer’s disease, onefactor that continues to comeup is diabetes—specifically type2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a conditionwhere the body either becomesless able to use insulin orproduces too little insulin (or acombination of both), causing itto be less able to process sugarand turn it into energy. It hastypically been considered anadult disease, although there aremore children and teenagersdeveloping diabetes now, likelydue to the higher levels ofobesity and sedentary lifestyles.

Type 2 diabetes has ahereditary component, meaningthat if you have family memberswith the disease, you are morelikely to develop it. However, several other factors increaseyour chances of developing type2 diabetes, including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, small or largebirth weight and stress.

Research has found that, onaverage, people with diabetesare more likely to demonstrateslower processing speeds and

impaired executive functioningskills, even without a diagnosisof dementia.

Research has found that 50%of those with type 2 diabeteswill go on to develop dementia. In one study involving 553participants, twice as manypeople with type 2 diabetesdeveloped dementia (includingAlzheimer’s disease and vasculardementia) as compared to thosewithout diabetes. At this time, researchers don’t believe type 2diabetes is the sole cause ofAlzheimer’s but rather that itincreases the risk of dementiadeveloping.

An article in the journalNeurology outlined researchthat demonstrated a correlationbetween higher levels of glucosein the body and lower levels ofcognitive functioning. None ofthe 141 participants haddiabetes. But those with chronichigher blood sugar levelsperformed more poorly oncognitive testing and alsoshowed decreases in the sizeand structural changes in thehippocampus area of the brain.

Research has shown thatpeople with well-controlledblood sugar levels can slow oreven prevent cognitive decline, despite the presence ofdiabetes. Some medications forthe treatment of diabetes havedemonstrated effectiveness inproviding good control ofglucose levels as well asimproved cognition in thosewith diabetes.
