Front CoverMy first attempt at creating my front cover started with this. I firstly started creating a logo; the logo never took that long to create as I had already pre-planned what I wanted my logo to look like. The text used was ‘Bebas Neue’ and the page is International Paper. I chose Bebas Neue font as it looked the most applicable to my genre of Hip Hop, it connoted strong, hard and powerful which is commonly associated to Hip Hop. Above and below the masthead, I used the lines ‘#1 HIP HOP MAGAZINE’ and ‘ISSUE: 01’. I chose to leave it underneath the masthead, as I never exactly knew where these would go in my final product so I made the decision to leave it there based on other magazines, such as ‘The Source’ magazine where sometimes its located near the magazine. I chose black writing as I believe it’s a must in any magazine. First of all, black text connotes strong, powerful and this links to Hip Hop Artist such as their look which implies hard. The Green colour is used as it’s not an overused colour, it is iconic. You don’t see every magazine with a bright green colour and I can use this colour to represent my brand. For example when you see Red and White there is only one team you think of, The Arsenal.

The time after, I added several features to my front cover. I added several names of Artists to my front cover; I had a headline and a headline act. These were the major changes, although if you look to the bottom, there is a website link and a barcode. The coverlines are heavily highlighted in black so they’re not missed, and eyecatching. I used a grey puff so it stands out from the other colours, so they do not blend in. By doing this, it allows each feature to be eye catching. The headline is short and snappy; this will want people to read more as they want to know his POV. I used a different font on the ‘SANKAA’ so it stands out from the use of BEBAS Neue. A different font is used, so it stands out so the reader will instantly recognise the name.

The two changes since the last edit where, taking out the grey puff and putting in a front image into the front cover. At this period the Puff didn’t work well with the image so I had to take it out of the front cover. The image is Sankaa, who is holding a gun to his head. This was done to represent Hip Hop as it is a quite violent genre. I didn’t want Sankaa overlapping the masthead since it’s the first issue and he’s not as important.

The most evident change is the front image, where I had had to change the picture. I used the magic wand to take the background off, since the background was irrelevant o my genre. The shot is more frontal, and this is a common theme in magazines where they use a close up of the person. I changed the colour of the website, at the bottom otherwise it would have blended in too much causing it to be irrelevant. The Puff had to go back in, as there was an empty space that needed clearing up.

The puff location was moved, as I never wanted it to overlap or underlap the front image as it will cause too much of a disturbance. I moved it to the left, as its easy to see, and it gets the purpose of the Puff to tell something easily.

I added a ‘+’ to tell the audience what more you can read in the magazine. Just implies to us, what other features in the magazine there are

Most importantly the front image changed, I retrieved many ideas from fellow brands and the entire close ups were intimate with something going on. So I took a new photo with more meaning and intimacy. I used the magic wand and the magnetic lasso to erase the sides. The erased sides would have implied something else, causing the connotations to be very off.

I used a light grey background, to add more substance to the magazine. I used the rectangle tool and drew around the template. The grey is a tertiary colour in my magazine, and is usually used in all 3 pages

Since the last edit I changed a lot of my front cover. Although a lot changed some of the foundations are still in place, such the mastheads and the cover headline above the artist. First of all, I changed the colour of the headline ‘Sankaa’ from black to white as it created a more aesthetically complexion; as well the cover line under the headline changed ‘hip hops eye-nstein’. The cover line has more relation to the double page spread.

I added a skyline, so my magazine cover has more text about different stuff rather than about sanakaa.
