President's MessageAs we havejustcome out ofthe travel season, I thought I'd mention again a subject

I've covered before, that of a listing in the NEWS BULLETIN of places of interest toAMICAns. The first time I mentioned this and suggested people tell me ofplaces theyhavevisited that relate to our hobby I received exactly' no response. Perhaps in this ageeveryone flies to a specific destination, does just what they went to do, and flies back. Still,there must be others like myself who prefer to drive and explore the country. Anyway Ithought I'd trot this out once more and then I'll drop it.

To give you an idea of what I had in mind let me mention some places we haveenjoyed and think you might too. Often we stumble on these places by accident and wewonder how many great things we have been within a few mile of but did not know

existed.This spring we happened to be in Atlanta, Georgia and went out to a park in nearby Stone Mountain where wediscovered they have a museum. It features a nice collection of automobiles but has a number ofmusical instrumentssuch as 68 and 10I-key Mortiers, assorted Seeburg and Link machines, etc. there must be a couple ofdozen instrumentsnot counting juke boxes. They also have a nice collection of old toys. The park has the Bells ofStone Mountain Carillonbut we were there at the wrong time to hear it play.

Up near Traverse City, Michigan there is the Music House which was featured in the last issue of.the NEWSBULLETIN. This place is outstanding for the way things are displayed and for the excellent condition of all theinstruments. They look and sound as they should. Instruments range from music boxes and pianos to large band organs.They also have a nice collection of early radios. This is a must see ifyou are anywhere in the area.

Sandusky, Ohio has a carousel museum. It was just getting underway when we were there last summer. Ifyoulike carousels, don't pass up this one.

I'm so pleased to put this issue in the mail at last - not only because it containsan important research article by Bill Koenigsberg and Lynn Pompeii, but because ofthe issue's size and the amount ofdetail work centered around the Mason & Hamlinlistings in particular it's with a sense ofreliefand pleasure that I place it in the handsof the post office.

Also included with this issue is a reprint of the Mason & Hamlin Ampico Acatalog from 1928. Dick Howe was kind enough to lend his original of this raredocument so that it could be shared with our membership. I hope that you enjoy it.

We have plans to do at least one additional reprint in upcoming months. Terry Smythe has offered an original of anhistoric and rare Artrio-Angelus publication.

PRODUCTION HISTORY HIGHLIGHTSBy William Koenisgberg and Lynn Pompei*

Between November 1990 and March 1991, Bill Koenigsberg visited.the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company, located at 35 Duncan Street,Haverhill, Massachusetts. It required three trips to review andresearch carefuly their historic shipping registers covering thepianistically fascinating period from 1924 to 1929. The ledgerdocumented the serial numbers and provided a wealth ofadditionalinformation for the Mason & Hamlin grand pianos including thoseinto which the Ampico A reproducing mechanism was originallyinstalled. The production history highlights cover the period from1929 to 1941, during which the Ampico B mechanism was installed,were published in a similarly titled article in the NovemberlDecember 1990issue oftheAMICANews Bulletin. Once again, the authorsextend appreciation to Lloyd Meyer, Paul Monachino, and GeorgeBrambilla ofMason & Hamlin for allowing free exploration and thepossibility to experience vicariously and to share such an excitingportion of musical history.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to find the serial numer of all·-the Mason & Hamlin Ampico A instruments so that present day~ectorswould know when these truly magnificent pianos were

manufactured and where they were originally shipped. Informationfrom a preliminary review (in November 1990) of the Mason &Hamlin shipping registers indicated that some 700 Ampico A instruments might has been manufactured. That first "guesstimate"was low; the final count reveals a "grand" total of 1,151 Mason &Hamlin pianos in which the Ampica A was installed! It is impossibleto know now precisely how many there were because there wassome overlap during the transitional period when the Ampico A wasphased out of production and the Ampico B was introduced. Basedon an analysis of the case numbers to distinguish Ampico A andAmpico B instruments, it is inferred that 25 of the pianos cited onthe Mason & Hamlin Ampico B list (NovemberlDecember 1990)actually contained Ampico A mechanisms. Only when these pianosare found will we know for certain the exact count. Meanwhile, hereis the intriguing and tantalizing story of the production history ofthe first 1,151 Mason & Hamlin Ampico A pianos. A complete list ofthese instruments, including serial number, case number, size,finish, style, shipping date, and piano dealer is presented here foryour edification and enjoyment.

EXAMINATION OF THE RECORDS: A brief inspection of thislist revealed notational curiosities whose meanings were elusive atfirst. At this point the reader may wish to peruse the list in order toappreciate this. For example, what is a case number and how doesit differ from the serial number? Why does "C" appear in the size

.os resold? We now offer what we believe to be the answers tose questions and others, and in so doing, provide some insight

into the inner workings ofa first-rate, high-technology organizationresponsible for producing some of the most exquisite music in theworld.

DETERMINATION OF SIZES: The serial numbers on this listcorrespond to Ampico pianos because we know from extensive fieldexperience that the letter "R" in the "Size" column signifies a reproducing instrument. The absence of the "R" notation in the shippingregisters denotes a conventional straight grand piano, of whichthere were 5,438 (October 1924 to January 1929,) reflecting thedifference between the highest (39671) and lowest (33082) serialnumbers in the range and the number of Ampico grands (1,151.)This means that, on average, one of every six Mason & Hamlingrand pianos manufactured between 1924 and 1929 contained thefamed Ampico A reproducing mechaism. The size of each instrument in the accompanying list (and the original registers) is codedaccording to the following notation:

In the early Mason & Hamlin Ampico grands, the letter "R" wasaffixed at the end of the size (model) code, but was placed at the beginning of the code in the later versions.

The "C" NotationThe letter "C" appears at the beginning of the size code for many ofthe pianos (84) on the first three pages of this list. The first authorhad never seen the letter "C" imprinted with the serial number onMason & Hamlin Ampico grand pianos and was initially mystifiedby its significance. Following the rule that people usually do thingsfor a good reason, he struggled with the meaning ofthe "C" notation.After reviewing the list many different ways, e.g., sequentially organized by case numbers (more about the meaning ofcase numberslater), he realized that he had owned one of the "C" pianos in thepast, namely CAAR 33574. There was one characteristic about thatpiano that was different from all other Mason & Hamlin Ampicoinstruments he had seen. Four ofthe spokes from the original eightarm tension resonator under the soundboard (for which Mason &Hamlin is justifiably famous) had been neatly cut off. He hadmarvelled at the time how cleanly and cosmetically exact the cutwas made at the piano rim, suggesting that it was done at the factory. But why? It was probably done to provide the room necessaryto unobtrusively accommodate the Ampico mechanism under thepiano. The letter "C" may denote those early Mason & HamlinAmpico pianos in which some of the spokes of the tension resonatorwere "cut" away to make room for the Ampico expression mechanism. From experience with later pianos, he believes that the casesof the subsequent instruments were modified to receive the tensionresonator closer to the soundboard or the cases were redesigned,thereby precluding the need to cut away any tension-bearing armswhich might otherwise obstruct the installation of the Ampico components. In order to help validate or contradict the conjectureoffered here, information from owners of other "C" notation Mason& Hamlin Ampicos would be appreciated.

Serial Number vs. Case NumberDid you ever wonder why the serial number (usually imprinted onthe string-supporting plate) on your Mason &Hamlin did not matchthe number often found in so many other places on the piano, e.g.,behind the piano lid hinge, on the back of the key slip, on the piano

action, or on the bottom of the lyre pedal? The mysterious othernumber is, in fact, a logical aspect of the manufacturing process. Itserved to identify all the parts ofa piano amidst many other similarparts during fabrication of the instruments, and as such, is an inhouse working number, or case number. The serial number itselfwas stamped on the plate only after each instrument was completed. This system of bookkeeping accommodated unanticipatedmanufacturing delays, and now serves as another means ofidentifying the piano, especially if the plate serial number has beenobliterated by regilding, refinishing, or damage. Rearranging thepiano entries on the accompanying list according to case numbersshows that groups ofpianos ofthe same size were made at about thesame time. This was especially true during 1926-1928 when the factory really got the Ampico A models rolling. The group patterns aremore sporadic at the beginning (1924) and end ofAmpico A production (1929).

This means that, on average, one of every 15 Ampico instrumentswas made in an art case, nearly four times less frequently than forthe Ampico B pianos made between 1929 and 1941. Ampico Binstruments are also found in the styles listed here, and in twoad~tional categories: Colonial (8) and Georgian (1). • .,'

Geographic Distribution

It is demographically interesting to determine where the Mason &Hamlin Ampico A pianos were originally shipped. This can be doneby grouping the data on the accompanying master list according topiano dealer, city, state, and country. A brief summary of some ofthe results is presented here. '

Clearly, the probability offinding a 5'8" Mason & Hamlin AmpicoA grand today is greater than that for any of the other sizes, largeror smaller. Accounting for all of the instruments cited, the pianoswere available in four wood finishes:

The next group offive cities also received significant numbers of theAmpicopianos: Los Angeles (35), Cleveland (32), Detroit (29), Philadelphia (28), and Syracuse (28).

When the distribution ofinstruments is grouped by state in decreasing frequency of occurrence, a similar picture emerges, as shownbelow:

Ifwe assume that these instruments remained in the state to whichthey were originally sent, the probability oflocating one there todayis roughly indicated by the relative size of the numbers in the tableabove. Because U.S. citizens are a very mobile group, one can onhuse this data in a qualitative sense to find an instrument todf-.(assuming, of course, that it still exists, intact or otherwise).

Resold InstrumentsInspection of the list in the range of serial numbers from 39326 toto 39640 shows that 39 pianos were resold. That is, they were taken

_ . ~k from the original piano dealer by Mason & Hamlin, assigned~ew serial number (but, of course, not a new case number), and

shipped to another piano dealer for resale. The list accompanyingthis article actually shows 1190 pianos, of which 39 appear twice.These are identified by an asterisk (*) following the serial number.According to Paul Monachino, who has been associated with Mason& Hamlin for about 40 years, this curious activity reflected difficultfinancial times for piano dealers (November 1928 to January 1929)during which Mason & Hamlin agreed to repossess (with reducedremuneration) unsold instruments and resell them through otherdealers. In hindsight, was this a harbinger ofthe Great Depression?The law required that for such an instrument to be resold it had tobe given a new serial number. Apparently, this option w~ open todealers for only a few months during Ampico A production. It doesappear again duringAmpico B production, buton a very limited andintermittent basis. It is thought-provoking that the records showthis resale activity only for Ampico A instruments, not for conventional Mason & Hamlin grand pianos during the same time period.

CuriositiesWe have tried to transfer all of the Mason & Hamlin Ampico information found in the shipping registers, even though some still doesnot make sense. Future research may shed light on a number ofareas. For example, what is the significance of the name "Gertz"associated with two entries ofLouis XV style pianos (39094, 39377)?

Two pianos (34410 and 34850) bear the same case number (34845)."'qis situation naturally developed for the resold instruments,

Vlich spanned the serial number range from 39326 to 39640 (19281929). How did this happen for such an early instrument (1925)?The handwriting of the original entries is unequivocally clear, so itcurrently remains an unresolved puzzle.

The notation "w/o installing," which appears with a few entries inthe handwritten register probably means the piano was fabricatedfor the Ampico, but it was not installed because the instrumentswere sent to the research labs at the American Piano Company,where prototype mechanisms were developed. How We Handled All of This Data

This list was generated on the Macintosh™ lIci using Excel<i:> 2.0spreadsheet software. Once the data was entered, the list could besearched easily (handy for correcting mistakes) and could be sortedin any manner desired. This feature satisfied our penchant foraccuracY,and provided answers to questions regarding sequencingof serial numbers, case numbers, shipping dates, and those 39r~sold pianos. Unfortunately, the ease of operation and flexibilityof the program made possible more types ofsorts providing more information, generating more questions, and creating more puzzles.

It was hardly a surprise to find spelling inconsistencies in theoriginal list, considering the volume of entries and the fact that

<\lny diffe:r;ent people kept the records by hand. In each instance-0uiring interpretation of handwriting, we chose either the most

common occurrence of the spelling or the most likely. This decisionsacrifices letter-for-Ietter accuracy, but that degree of precision isless important than properly understanding the information. One


example is Darnell & Thomas Piano Co., Raleigh, NC. It is clearlywritten as "Dainell", or "Daimell" in several entries. It was onlyafter sorting by locations that this inconsistency was spotted. Wechose "Darnell," probably due to euphony as much as any other reason. We may not have been correct in making such choices, but wewere consistent!

Part of the fun in this venture for the second author was taking rawdata from rough, handwritten lists and making a complete, polished, accurate, and useful report from it. What can be discoveredwhen the listis sorted chronologically, especially when the economicsituation of the times is known? How many pianos were shippedover what periods of time? What relation does that have withpeople's desire for culture, leisure activities and their economicstatus? For example, did the popularity ofspeakeasies during Prohibition affect the growth of sales? Who were the customers in Argentina, Mexico, Japan and Cuba? Would any enthusiast in theaudience care to address these questions? The generation ofthe listbecame almost a game for us: how much can be learned? When onelist was created, what was learned influenced another list.

We apologize for any inaccuracies that may be discovered when professionals, experts, and collectors examine the lists and compare theinformation to what they know about their own instruments. Wemade every effort to transcribe accurately the information appearing in the original records. As much as we would like them to be,the lists should not be considered definitive. Please regard them,instead, as starting points for more investigation, clarification, anddiscussion.

In retrospect, we are glad for the opportunity to have been involvedin this project. As a result, many ofyou will also be caught up in thefun ofdiscovery. These lists will help you explore the unique historyof your own Mason & Hamlin instruments. ,Our hope is that thiseffort helps answer many ofyour questions, and encourages furtherinvestigation and communication. The master list accompanying this article was stored in a computerto facilitate data manipulation, statistical and branched analysis.The map ofthe United States included here, indicating the numberof Mason & Hamlin Ampico A pianos originally shipped to eachstate, was produced as an aid to those seeking an instrument.

The master list was rearranged in many ways, e.g., by sequentialcase number, shipping date, piano dealer, city, state, country, artcase, size, etc. All of the results were tabulated and printed in theform of 12 lists. Pianos are listed by: art case case number citydealer, serial number, shipping date, size, and ~tyle. Resold ~iano~are listed by original and reassigned serial numbers. Piano dealersare listed alphabetically and by state/country.

There may be a small additionto your comment on the activities ofASCAP following the John Philip Sousaarticle in the March/April edition ofthe NEWS BULLETIN.

ASCAP (American Society ofComposer, Authors & Publishers) andBMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) are beginning a fairly strong campign to enforce copyright reuirements. Both ofthem have strongly notified all managers and societies who operate tradeshows, expositions and meetings, tosign (and pay) for the possible use ofany copyright music during theirevents. The first settlement of apparently their first infringement suit hasnow been reported.

The National Association ofExposition Managers (NAEM) originally agreed to sign an agreementwith ASCAP, essentially recommending to each of its member that theysign a specific contract covering theirshows. Subsequently this was abrogated, because the association felt thatit was far too generous to ASCAP.However they remain aware that theperformance of copyright music byindividual exhibitors at a trade show,or by the sponsoring organization,renders the user liable to copyrightinfringement unless royalties are paid.

Just remember that if youarrange to sing "Happy Birthday toYou" at an open AMICA dinner event,you may get billed for a fee!

After reviewing the original A Techinical Treatise on PianoPlayer Mechanism by William B. White,published in 1908, I looked at some ofthe catalogs received in the mail. Yep,Hammacher Schlemmer & Co., foundedin 1848, once a piano supply housewas now a specialty mail-order retailer!

Member Theo Walrath forwarded an article by Mary Murphy ofthe Post-Crescent newspaper aboutAMICAn Carl Lambie's home-basedactivities directed toward duplicationofrare paper music rolls. She described'Lambie's basement as, "...a maze oflarge homemade machines intermingledwith computers, a synthesizer keyboardand speakers." All of this hardwareexists to capture not only the musicalnotes, but also the "expression and soulofthe original performance."

Carl's work background as anelectrician, metal worker; and experience in repairing and rebuilding playerpianos led him to this new challenge.Like any inventor, Carl described themany attempts and failures in his questto accurately replicate the essence ofthe original "recordings."

To Lambie, use of newer (computer) technologies to further his workapparently made sense. While the desired p'roduct is a duplicate paper roll,logical contemporary byproducts includeelectronic editing, recording, playbackand storage.

Carl finds obvious pleasure incombining historic information and technologies with those of the present.

/Lambie states in the article that, "My.Jiltention is (also) to be able to do new

music by floppy disk through MIDI.Nobody has made any pipe organ rolls


since 1935, and there has been somegood music out there since then." It isequally interesting to hear the 1920sroll arrangements reproduced througha synthesizer.

The article went on to pointout that nearly every manufacturer ofroll playing instruments in the 1920shad his own standards - different sizeholes, spacing, etc. and that in addition to the better-known instrumentslike player pianos and organs thereare a host of other automatic instruments such as violins and banjos each with its own "standard."

Speaking ofhis work, Carl said,"It makes me happy. "It's partly business, but it's fun corresponding withother collectors and being able to helpthem out."

Most collectors of player pianos regard the 1950s as the bleakesttime for interest and support. Theprimary manufacturers had long sincegiven up this "unmarketable" commodity in favor of the then popularspinet lines. Imperial Industrial under the stewardship of Max Kortlander continued plodding along with theissue oflatest hits as well as old standards for 88-note player pianos. Eventhe annual sales of 88-note rolls byImperial Industrial reached all-timelows in the fifties. Was this a timewithout interest, or more correctly atime with a history of its own?

The Music Trades magazinesofthe 1950s carried letters to the editor requesting supplier informationfor player rolls but more importantly for new player pianos.

The requests for new playersfell on deaf ears until the mid fiftieswhen Gribble Manufacturing releasedtheir new product, "Magic Fingers,"which was announced in the fall of1954 with an anticipated supply dateof spring 1955. The "Magic Fingers"unit was supplied to be attached toexisting spinets, uprights or grands.The product did not remain available

long and now may be open to questionas to its quality.

Hardman, Peck announcedtheir new Hardman Duo player pianoin 1955 and received a great deal ofattention at the NAMM (NationalAssociation ofMusic Merchants) musictrade show that year. The editor ofThe Music Trades had strong reservations about marketing a new playerand debate raged until the popularacceptance at the trade show that year.In retrospect it is clear that there is acertain market share for players thanas there is now.

Those darkest ofyears are notwithout their supporters and even contributors. J. Lawrence Cook who waslong recognized for his contributionsat the QRS Co., Imperial IndustrialCorp., and QRS Music Rolls, Inc. Cookhad his side interests which, not surprisingly, were player piano related.

Clark stopped their new releases of coin piano rolls in the early1940s. UnknowntomanyJ. Lawrencecook picked up the slack and by the1950s was advertising in The MusicTrades magazine. Cook may havebegun cutting coin rolls in the 1940sbut was certainly a going concern in

the 1950s. I have one Cook "A" ron cuton a very poor blue paper that nodoubt tracked badly even when new,but it was a supply when there was noother.

Included with this article isan ad from Cook advertising his line ofcoin rollS and an article which talks ofCook's business. Ofsurprise tome wasthat Cook states he has a mailing listof 600. This certainly is unexpectedfor December, 1952. Both the ad andarticle appeared in The Music Tradesissue for December 1952.

It takes Mr. Cook up to fourhours to do a song that will take lessthan three minutes on the piano andhe estimates that there are at least3,000 nickelodeons still in operation,pointing out that there are places inthe West where no ranch or bar wouldbe complete without one.

Mr. Cook knows of only twoother gentlemen in his trade. A pair ofEnglishmen also make their incomesby recording rolls for nickelodeons.

TWO PLAYER PIANOS, MAGICFINGERS AND HAlIDMAN, TAKESHOW BY STORM

The two busiest exhibits attracting the most enthusiastic dealerresponse on the piano floors were theDwight L. Gribble and Hardman, PeckCo. player piano displays. Dealer enthusiasm at both indicates that eitherthe piano industry has failed to recognize the public interest in the playeror that piano dealers in their tribute tothe player miscalculate public demand.

Typical comments overhear included: "This is simply wonderful, whyit takes me back thirty years," to whichone wag rejoined, "Would you like toturn back the clock on everything elsetoo?" Another dealer reminisced howhe had sold 425 players in 1925 andafter congratulating the manufacturers said, "There is no reason why wecan't do this again, all that it needs isa little promotion."

Having been presented inreports and advertisements to readers of The Music Trades magazinesince last December, Dwight L.Gribble's ''Magic Fingers" player needslittle introduction. Easily fitted underthe keyboard of any piano, "MagicFingers" will retail for $395 plus a $50installation charge. Complete detailswill be found on pages 52 and 65 ofThePurchaser's Guide, 1955 Edition.

Sensing a big latent demandfor a player piano in modern garb,Hardman, Peck & Company of NewYork City, after more than three yearsof engineering research, introducedits new version of the pump player,the "Play-a-Tune," at the trade show.

"If the piano meets with thedealer demand we anticipate, we'll gointo production immediately and havemodels on retail floors this year beforeChristmas," stated E. R. McDuff,president of Winter & Company.

In appearance, the new instrument is a far cry from the bulkyuprights ofa quarter-century ago. It isa neat40 inchhigh console piano, withan unobtrusive sliding panel to conceal the roll mechanism. Pedals foldup out of sight when not in use. Youcan control volume and expressionwith levers -- a feature player-fansloved on the old models. A high speedre-wind mechanism enables you tochange rolls quickly.

Mr. McDuff said the new piano would retail at about $1,295, andpointed out that better models sold forthis back in the old days, with some ofthe deluxe grands selling for as muchas $5,000. ''With the cost of nearlyeverything else far higher, the pianorepresents a real bargain today," hesaid.

Hardman, Peck also showed anew player attachment which operates electrically and may be installedin any piano. It is contained in a cabinet 21-1/2 inches deep and high, and17-1/2 inches wide. Retail price ofthisdevice will be about $495, Mr. McDuffsaid.

Unless you're a player addict,you might think you could get only theold "chestnuts" on piano rolls, but thisis not the case. Q.R.S. player rollsissued by Imperial Industrial Company, which does the bulk ofthe business, are right up to the minute withthe latest hits, and can often beat therecord producers to the draw, becauseof the relatively easy manufacturingprocess. Most rolls sell for about sixtycents each, although some ofthe longerclassics and special arrangements are$1.10 or $1.25.

Prokofiev is considered oneof the twentieth century's leadingcomposers and was a virtuoso pianistwho specialized in performing hisown piano compositions (eight ofwhichwere recorded for Duo-Art between1919 and 1924).

In addition to Duo-Art rollsofhis own work he did, amongothers,Mussorsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Like many others, Serge'sinterest in music started at an earlyage - initially receiving instructionfrom his mother who was herself anaccomplished pianist. Serge began tocompose at the age offive.

Later instruction was fromReinhold Gliere in 1902 and 1903.Entrance into the St. PetersburgConservatory was at the age of thirteen to further his musical training.He submitted to the examining com- ,mittee four operas, a symphony, two rpiano sonatas and other compositionswhich were a disappointment to thefaculty for the unusual form whichthe committee found unpleasant. Hewas termed as an arrogant studentand he was disillusioned with histeachers. The feeling was reportedlyshared by the teachers.

After completion ofthe composition course in 1908/09 Prokofievbecame a student of Annette Essipova*. Madame Essipova was the firstfemale pianist to win world-wide fameand the first wife ofthe famous pianoteacher, T. Leschetizky*. There wasfriction between the student andteacher though Serve developed intoa brilliant virtuoso. His main ambition was to promote and perform hiscompositions, thoucl1 his teacher triedto get him to periorm the works ofchopin, Beethoven, etc.

Serge left Russia in May 1915for New York. His American debutwas in Aeolian Hall on November 20,1918. He was married to singer LinaLlubera in September, 1923 and livedin Paris for twelve years. His life wasinvolved in composing and givingrecitals resulting in an unparalleled -:fcareer by 1946. His death was onMarch 5, 1953.

Mr. Grainger's contribution tothe program included the Chopin Polonaise in A Flat, Schumann's Romancein F Sharp and his own "CountryGardens," repeated on the Duo-Art;the first movement of Tchaikovsky'sConcerto, Op. 23, No.1, in B flatminor, the orchestral part given onthe organ and the solo given by Mr.Grainger's mechanical second self, andfinally, as duets between himself andthe Duo-Art, his own "Gay but Wistful," "Pastorale" and "Gum SuckersMarch."

The titanic "Fantasie pour OrgueAeolian," by Saint-Saens, played byDion W. Kennedy, was one of thebrightest spots of a program moreluminous than many a concert of entirely hand-made music.

One ofthe Duo-Art concerts ofthe Aeolian Company was given onthe evening of April 7 (1919) at Aeolian Hall, and presented FlorenceEaston, soprano of the MetropolitanOpera Company, and Percy Grainger,pianist, as the flesh-and-blood soloists, with Dion W. Kennedy manipulating the remarkable Aeolian organ.Josef Hofmann also, though not present, was heard, and Mr. Grainger'sart was also projected through the medium of the Duo-Art piano. Remarkable stage settings and unusual lighting helped make the recital hall thescene of a musical entertainment asenjoyable and artistic as it was unique.

Place aux virtuosos or ratherto the virtuoso ofvirtuosos, made Mr.Hofmann's recording of the ChopinScherzo, Op. 31 in B flat minor, theinitial offering. Mme. Easton sang the"Vissi d'Arte" aria, Tosti's "Mattinata"and Thayer's ''My Laddie" with Corporal Ralph Leopold accompanying.Mme. Easton's natural vocal equipment and cultivated artistry can neverbe displayed without waking genuineadmiration. The present instance wasno exception to this rule. Later in theevening she sang Grainger's "Willow,Willow," "Died for Love" and "A Reiver'sNeck-verse" with the Duo-Art reproducing Mr. Grainger's playing of theaccompaniments. With all due regardto the excellence ofthe support whichCorporal Leopold rendered, it must beadmitted that the Duo-Art, as that

Walter Damrosch, dean of Americanmusicians, who conducted the nineteen pianists at the concert, acted asauctioneer for the sale of the roll. Ashe held up the record to the view oftheaudience, Mr. Damrosch said: I consider this to be the most remarkablemusical document ever offered for sale.It is a Duo-Art roll made by ten of thegreatest pianists of the world: JosefHofmann, Rudolph Ganz, HaroldBauer, Alexander Siloti, Ernest Schelling, 'Guiomar Novaes, Myra Hess,Ernest Hutcheson, Ethel Leginska andYolanda Mero. It is the only copy ofthis recording and the only record ofits kind in existence. Therefore it ispriceless.

"This roll is comparable musically to-t>ur Declaration of Independence. Of

that there is but one copy in the world,personally signed by the makers. This


remarkable Duo-Art roll is really aDeclaration of Inter-Dependence ofArtists. I t represents the tribute paidby these great pianists to a brotherartist in need, the beloved MoritzMoszkowsky."

Mr. Damrosch then offered the roll tothe audience at auction. The biddingamong box-holders in the Metropolitan's "Diamond Horseshoe" immediately went into hundreds of dollars.

RENOWNED PIANISTCLAUDIO ARRAU DIESAT 88

Chilean-born pianist ClaudioArrau died on June 8, 1991 in Austriafollowing emergency surgery to correct an intestinal blockage. Mr. Arrauwas in Austria at the time to perform .his first public program in two years to celebrate the opening of a museumnear Vienna. A second performancewas planned in Dusseldorf, Germanyat the Schumann Festival there.

In addition to a performancecareer which spanned eight decades;ofspecial interest to AMICAns are theEnglish made Duo-Art rolls (br 010,Impromptu in A-flat by Schubert andbr 019 Valse, by Menter released in1923) which Arrau recorded. There isreason to suspect that he recordedother selections for the Aeolian Company which were not released.

with the late Frank Holland (founderofthe British Piano Museum in Brentwood, England) revealed an interesting personal recollection by Holland."...the Valse by Sophie Menter wasplayed in the museum for visitors foryears. It was splendid. At that timeClaudio Arrau came to England andgave a concert which I attended. Afterthe concert I went to see him, showinghim the roll. He was so delighted to seeit again and autographed it for me.There is a story about the music thatit was written for Mr. Arrau by SophieMenter whom he much admired."

Mr. Arrau's performance specialties included the. works ofLiszt, towhich he was said to have brought arare combination of physical powerand philosophical insight. His Chopin,Schumann and Debussy, too, wereconsidered models of clarity throughout his long career.

Arrau had halted his performances following the 1989 death of hisGerman-born wife, mezzo soprano,Ruth Schneider. He had, in 1990,returned to the recording studio.

Arrau's obituary in The NewYork Times cites information in a1982 book, by Joseph Horowitz, entitled "Conversations with Arrau." "Hecould be insightful, amusing, and athome in a variety of subjects thatincluded contemporary music, earlyinstrument, primitive art (which hecollected) and popular music of various eras, from the Paul WhitemanBand to the Beatles and even discomusic. He was also extremely fond offilms and played Liszt in a biographyof the composer filmed in Mexico cityin 1935."

Oriented to the faddish public interest in motion picture musicalsthat was blossoming at the time, Photoplay established a record reviewdepartment. To quote from Photoplay:

It can be done if youlearn how to read the theme coding onthe right side of th~ roll, varying footpressure accordingly. It takes a littlepractice, but soon, good results can behad.

Beside the aforementioned accompaniment ports, the sustain andsoft pedals are read too. Automaticreroll and replay are not used in thisinstrument.

When the instrument is usedin the 88-not mode, the accompaniment ports are cut off, along with thesoft pedal; and four notes in the bassand treble sides respectively are restored to the tracker bar. Then theinstrument functions like a Themodistpiano.

Where did Roy get this jewel??Would you believe--the SalvationArmy?? One day, Roy happened to bebrowsing in their San Francisco storewhen he spotted it. Well, one thing ledto another, and pretty soon, the GeorgeSteck was on its way to Roy's workshop for restoration.

The previous owner apparentlywas in the process of rebuilding thestack when he became ill and passedaway, leaving no heirs. Thus the StateofCalifornia inherited his estate, andin some bureaucratic way, the GeorgeSteck ended up in pieces in the Salvation Army store. When Roy took possession, the stack was missing all 88pneumatics and striker flanges andpushrods. However, Roy soon foundthe flanges and pushrods and madeup the pneumatic boards from Maplestock as good or better than the originals. Aside from that, the piano has asizeable collection ofDuo-Art and 88note rolls, (approximately 200.) Today, as evidenced at the meeting, thepiano is in excellent restored and refinished condition. Goodjob well done,Roy!!

In the store, a conventionalAeolian Duo-Art grand, Wurlitzer AXwith roll changer and flute pipes; aNational piano (also with roll changer)were in good form. When the Yamaha"took five," these instruments playedfor us.'

Well, not to neglect Roy's otherinstruments, there was also a Berrywood style F (c. 1910) converted toplay Coinola "a' rolls and having addedpercussions, bells and pipes. This wasin good playing order, as was theWestern Electric Piano Co. jukebox (c.1928) playing eight 78rpm recordsautomatically via the use ofpneumatics to lift the tone-arm, change records, select, etc. Roy has another hobby... making leaded glass shades. Our special May weekendstarted at the home of Burdette Walters in Wellsburg, Iowa on May 18th.His 16-room brick home was built inthe Prarie School style about 1908 andhas been lovingly restored. One complete room was full of phonographswith Morning Glory horns and musiccabinets to display them. What a fantastic collection! After the meeting we ate snacksprovided by Joe's mother, Amanda, aswe listened to part of Joe's music boxcollection as well as a 1920 Marshalland Wendell Ampico player, a 1920Art-Apollo player piano and a 1900Hinners organ player.

We began to say our goodbyesaround 4 o'clock as many had a longride home. This was our first attemptat an over-night out-of-town meeting.Those who attended thought the venture was a success.

On Sunday many of us spentthe morning at an antiquelflea market in Cape. We all ate at a localrestaurant before going to Joe's housewhich is in Jackson, a few mile fromCape Girardeau.

We held a briefbusiness meeting. We discussed such things as alogo for our chapter, the logistics for adisplay our chapter will have at anantique automobile exhibit, sendingour chapter representative to thenational meeting in New Orleans andproper uses of chapter funds.

The following day we visitedthe home of Terry Goepel and CraigRemmen in Mason City, Iowa. Theyalso are restoring an older Victorianborne which is furnished with antiques.

They say good things come tothose who wait - couldn't have beenmore true at our May joint AMICAand MBSI chapter meeting. Due to anunfortunate emergency, curator NoelBurndahl, our host for the owner ofthe Milhous Collection, was unavailable at the scheduled time to unlockthe doors and let us in. Dana Johnson,one of the restorers for the collectionowned by brothers Robert and PaulMilhous, arrived to let us in and ablytook over until Noel cold make it. Iknow everybody will say that the shortwait was worth it.

The elegant lobby, just insidethe front door, was a welcoming hintof things to come. The large mainroom downstairs houses the fine autobmobile collection, including severalaward-winning vintage restorationsand "Al Capone's beer distributiontruck" arrayed in front ofa re-created1930s California gas station. A bicyclecollection in a "park" setting, a largegrouping of vintage gas pumps andstation signs, a restored WWII trainerplane hanging from the ceiling and,taking up an entire end wall, a 36-footlong 1924 Mortier Dance Organ madeup the ''furnishings'' of the spacioustwo-story high room.

Up the stairs, with a full-lengthbalcony overlooking the main room,the large musical collection is displayed.The many musical boxes included disk,cylinder and changers, with aboutthirty-six roll and book-playing instruments including their newestaddition; a Dutch StreetOrgan. Therewere just too many musical instruments to attempt to list here. Somewere fully restored by Dana and hishelpers; others had their cases beautifully finished but were awaiting interior work. Dana and Noel played theinstruments by request and answeredall questions. They were kept busy allafternoon by enthusiastic members.

Back downstairs, the Las Vegasroom contains about twelve slot machines. The barber shop area is furnished with adult and child-sized barberchairs and all the old-time accessoriesfor a "shave-and-a-haircut." The toyroom is dominated by a finely-detailedtrain layout and a collection of toycars. Throughout the building, manybeautifully restored antique clocks aredisplayed and ticking softly.

Tucked in behind the displayrooms are storage and workshop areas, but the "public" areas are arranged and furnished like the combination museumlhome of someone withvery good taste. Thick carpeting, cozy

The Texas Chapter ofAMICAmet in Austin for a weekend meetingon February 23-24. Unfortunately ourreporter Bob Butters was unable toattend. Rather than miss the opportunity to share news of a wonderfulmeeting, I am reporting for him.

Members arriving at the CrestHotel on Friday evening were welcomed by President Sal Mele withlight refreshments and wine. Saturday morning the scheduled activitiesstarted with a presentation by worldrenowned organ builder Otto Hofmannwho was born and raised in a smallGerman community near Austin,Texas. Otto has built in excess of 260organs around the U.S. and in Europe. He brought a small tracker organ and a variety of pipes to demonstrate. He discussed the materials usedin making organ pipes as well as sizeJnd sounds of different pipes. We hada delightful visit with Otto as he recalled some of his experiences in hislifetime of building organs.


Mter lunch we went to theBarker Texas History Center for theopening program of the Texas Classical Music Exhibit presented by theTexas Music Museum. This program,under the direction ofProfessor Clayton Shorkey (President ofthe Board ofDirectors of the Texas Music Musewn,)featured biographical information, photographs, etc. ofTexas composers andperforming artists. Ruth BingamanSmith was the honored guest, and sheperformed a program on Clay's recently restored 1926 Kranich & BachWelte Licensee grand piano which heloaned for the exhibit. Ruth openedthe program with "The Fountain (JohnSteinfeldt,) which she recorded forWelte Mignon in the early 1920s, andclosed with he own composition "Ballet Orientale." Ruth was lovely andgave a marvelous performance. Following her program, Clay presentedRuth with a bouquet of red roses. Hethen paid tribute to Ruth by presenting her with a certificate signed byGovernor Ann Richards in recognition for her contribution to classicalmusic. John McClelland gave a presentation on the history and operationof player pianos, reproducing pianos,piano rolls and the Welte Mignon Co.For this particular occasion John hadarranged to have eleven ofRuth's Welterecordings combined and recut on afour-roll set. Several selections fromthe rolls were played demonstratingthe Welte reproducing piano to conclude the program.

The next event on the meetingschedule was a visit to Andy Gray'shome in far east Austin. Andy hasbuilt his own electronic piano playingmechanism which is attached to a sixfoot Baldwin Parlor Grand. The playerinterprets a MIDI data stream tooperate individual heavy-duty solenoids to depress the piano keys. TheMIDI data stream is generated by aMacIntosh computer running a commercial MIDI program. Input to theprogram comes from previously recorded electronic files or from "drafting board" arrangements produced byvarious editing programs. The controller adjust the voltage on each solenoid to reproduce the touch of thepianist when the recording was made.A recent addition is a heavy-duty solenoid to operate the sustain pedal Besidelistening to some good ragtime music,


we enjoyed touring Andy's home (whichhe also built himself.) After a briefbusiness meeting, some desert, and alittle more music, we made our wayback to the hotel for some much neededsleep.

Sunday morning we caravaned to Ken Caswell's home in WestAustin. There we enjoyed a wonderfulbrunch Ken had set up for us as welistened to his 1923 Feurich WelteLicensee upright piano. Ken has thefinest reproducing piano I have everheard. It truly is like hearing a liveconcert. This was indeed a greatmeeting! Thanks to all those who madethe weekend possible. -
