Principal’s Message

“Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE; the word itself says I’M POSSIBLE.” Audrey Hepburn Dear Parents, Great work… Welcome to Week 5! It has been another excellent week of great teaching and inspired learning at Valley View Public School. I have had the pleasure of reading many pieces of writing done by our talented students in the past week. This week I had visits from students in 2/3 T sharing their work on “Saving the Rainforest.” Kindergarten 2017 Information Evening This Wednesday, 25th May we will be hosting our Kindergarten Information night at 6:00pm in the Valley View Public School Library. We look forward to seeing and welcoming our new families and parents who have children who will be commencing Kindergarten in 2017. Enrolments Kindergarten 2017 We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2017. If you have a child starting school next year please call into the office to start the application process. If you have any friends or neighbours in our area with children starting next year please let them know that they can now apply. Welcome Miss Donna… We would like to welcome to Valley View Public School Miss Donna our new School Chaplain. School Chaplains assist students by promoting student wellbeing and working as part of the school support team. Miss Donna will be at our school each Tuesday. Unjustified Absences Thank you to those parents who are sending in notes promptly with regards to absences. It is a legal requirement that parents explain all absences within seven days of the first day of any period of absence. Please send a note in to explain the reason for the absence as soon as your child returns to school. If the absence is likely to exceed 7 days, please contact the school and keep us informed. Principals’ Conference Last Thursday and Friday, I attended the ConnectEd Principals’ Conference. Over 300 Principals were in attendance and we were informed of the latest research in education and inspired about best practice in 21st Century learning. Guest speakers included Dr Dean Fink, Corporal Mark Donaldson, VC and Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. I look forward to sharing this experience with the staff and putting this information into practice at Valley View Public School. Zone Cross Country Congratulations and best wishes to our talented runners who will be competing in the Zone Cross Country this Friday, 27th May.

“Together we achieve”

Yours in Education

P&C News Welcome to week 5. Just a few things this week: Breakfast Club Breakfast Club is a service run by Trudy Enders every morning (except Thursdays) and regularly provides breakfast for over thirty of our students at the top of the hill in H Block. Unfortunately Trudy (after giving many years of voluntary service) is stepping down from the role at the end of this year. This means there is a great opportunity for you to take on a fulfilling role within our community as she needs someone to train to take over next year. You may not even have to do it every day (remember many hands make light work), even just once a week would support the community. The commitment is only half an hour before the bell and most of us are there dropping our kids off anyway. If you would like to volunteer, even in a minor role, please contact Trudy on 0409 452 634 or email me at [email protected]. Just a reminder for your calendar… Working Bee July 24th, (first week of term three) we are asking for assistance with cleaning up the school grounds and other forms of general maintenance. If you think you can help in any way please contact me via email (see above). Watch this space for further upcoming details. Your contribution will be appreciated. Twilight Festival Our Twilight festival will be held on Friday the 23rd of September (last day of term three). Please keep the date in your diary clear and watch closely for more details as we get closer to this fabulous event. Getting Plugged In… And finally, a reminder that this week or next week a note will be coming home regarding our community database. Please fill out the form brought home by our students and return it to Valley View. It is not compulsory, however, this is a great opportunity to get connected and is a collaboration between staff, the P&C and local businesses to help better support one another.

Thank you Malcolm van Drempt

P&C President

Narara Valley High School Visit

On Tuesday, the 3rd of May, we hosted a group of teachers from Narara Valley High School and Niagara Park PS to observe the delivery of a writing lesson in 5/6T. The lesson encompassed all aspects of Quality Teaching and the visiting teachers were very impressed and amazed at the quality of work produced. The children worked extremely hard and were highly engaged. Thank you 5/6T for showing how amazing you are at writing.

On Thursday 19th June, the boys and girls soccer teams participated in the PSSA Knockout Gala Day which in-cluded 8 schools.

The Boys Team, What a close game! The boys had a myriad of chances early, but were unable to capitalise with two good shots from Aaron Stanbury going just over the crossbar. Callum O’Connor and Tomm Tamblyn were masters of the wing, both proving themselves quality providers. Brodie Martin also had a good early chance, waiting just a se-cond too long to pull the trigger, allowing a defender to block his shot. It was East Gosford PS that broke the deadlock with a bottom corner strike against the run of play. The boys from East Gosford soon doubled their lead with a superb strike that gave goalie Jack Magee little chance. The second half saw a different style of play, team manager Sid Bezwada kicked the boys into a different gear and pushed more players forward, young Tirryn Daniels was almost unstoppable, creating several chances and Ryan Kesby, a late inclusion, cut swathes through the East Gosford mid field. Corey Goff, Zak Williams, Logan O’Brien and Blake Hodge all showed lots of guts and hard running, never shying away from the hard tackles. Another late inclusion, Mitch Stanbury, was a rock in defense and paired tremendously with Kaiden Daniels to keep the ball away from our goal, repeatedly turning away East Gosford counter attacks. Aaron Stanbury scored mid-way through the second half to bring us within one, but despite a late push, our boys went down 2-1 to an East Gosford outfit that know they had to pull out all the stops to beat us. Well Done Valley View Boys! The Girls Team, The Girls team were absolute stars winning their first two games before gallantly going down to a fresher and more experienced Kariong PS team in the Gala Day Final. Jade Patrick and Lily Crease both scored 2 goals against Wyoming PS and Lilia Martinez and Kayla Hodge both chipped in for a goal apiece, proving a handful for their defenders. Amanda Bu had the Wyoming FC talent scouts note books out with a dazzling display of speed and agility, attributes she brought to all three of our games. Scar-lett Crecca impressed with her dazzling runs down the right wing, supplying our strikers with a buddle of quality crosses. The final result was an emphatic 6-1 victory. Jade Patrick and Lily Crease again scored twice each to put Narara PS away in a comfortable win, this time how-ever, it was the Valley View defense that shone brightest. Our back four, Clare Byrne, Jordan Barta, Jacinta Staszewski and Sharlah Pora took the game away from Narara, allowing them almost no opportunities in the box. Hannah Fairbridge shut down her side of the field, allowing none to pass and consistently turning defense into at-tack allowing Valley View PS to claim a 4-1 win. The Final was played in front of over 100 spectators and on the back of two strong performances, Kariong PS seemed intimidated, as half their team arrived late for kick off. Fatigue proved itself the biggest factor in the game as Kariong’s star player, a junior Mariner, took on our tired team and scored in the first few minutes. This player’s influence for the rest of the game however, was largely negated thanks to a sterling display of physicality and stubbornness by Peggy Enders who frustrated her at every turn, earning several free kicks. Chloe Phillips had a very tough game, but showed true courage on several occasions, charging the Kariong forwards and putting her body on the line to secure the ball. It was a hard way to end a short, but extraordinary campaign, but the girls in-spired everyone who witnessed their games with the fight and their will to overcome! Well done Valley View Girls!

Overall, both teams showed admirable sportsmanship, determination and perseverance. Both teams should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout the day, doing the school and community very, very proud!

STEWART HOUSE

For the next couple of weeks, or until we run out, the Student Leaders will be selling high bounce hand-balls to raise money for the Stewart House Organisation. The balls will be $3 and can be purchased on the cola on Thursday/Friday at lunch. All balls will be marked clearly with the student’s name. All money raised goes to Stewart House and will provide a yearly camp for students in need at a beach side retreat. Students from Valley View Public School have utilised and enjoyed this service over the last ten years and we will continue to support it into the future.

Many Thanks, Lisa Hecht
