SuccessHe has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;

Who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men

and the love of little children;

Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;

Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth’s beauty or failed to express it;

Who has left the world better than he found it,

Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;

Who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had;

Whose life was an inspiration;

Whose memory a benediction.

Elisabeth-Anne “Bessie” Anderson Stanley (1879-1952)

Elisabeth-Anne “Bessie” Anderson Stanleyis credited with the lived well, laughed often and loved much saying.

Her poem was written in 1904 for a contest held in Brown Book Magazine by George Livingston Richards Co. of Boston, MA.

Mrs. Stanley, of Lincoln, Kansas submitted the words in the form of an essay, rather than as a poem. The competition was to answer the question “What is success?” in 100 words or less.

Mrs. Stanley won the first prize of $250.

Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you for your support of the Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation. This our 6th anniversary of CCCF Fundraiser in memory our son and brother, Christopher. We created this Foundation as a way to celebrate the life and spirit of Christopher. Our son was a charming young man who lived a beautiful life that was full of endless possibilities. He laughed often with everyone and was loved by all. Chris’s life was surrounded by magnificent family and friends who have always been there for us in our time of need. Although Christopher is no longer with us in presence, he is thought of and missed deeply every minute of every day.

Each year, we are inspired by the support we receive from family and friends and business sponsors to make this a successful fundraiser. The proceeds we receive from our fundraisers enable the Foundation to provide financial assistance to individuals and organizations making a difference in the lives of children and their families. In this program book, we have included a list of those who have received funding from our Foundation with a spotlight on some of the organizations we support. Our annual recipients can be viewed on our website at www.chrisfoundation.org.

As our Foundation matures, the goal is to make an even bigger impact in the future of children’s lives. We believe that our outreach is a way for us to celebrate and honor Christopher and his life in a positive and productive way. Our goal is to help children in need to improve their lives, fulfill their hopes and dreams, and to make a better world for them. When we see Christopher again, we want him to be proud of the way all of us chose to revere his time on earth. We can never change yesterday, but we can make a difference today in the lives of children and their families in Chris’s memory.

We feel truly blessed to have such supportive family and friends who have worked to make this fundraiser a success; without you this event would not be possible.

Thank you for your participation and we deeply appreciate your support, generosity, and love.

Sincerely, Peter II, MaryAnn, and Peter III

About the Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation

The mission of the Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation is

to financially assist families in meeting the needs of their children

in various ways. The Foundation will assist needy children with

educational development, medical expenses for treatments, and

the well-being of a child by assisting with resources that may

allow them to participate in extra-curricular activities such as

sports and summer camps.

Christopher lived a life full of love and laughter, surrounded

by a strong family. We celebrate Chris’s life by reaching out to

children in need and hope that Chris’s spirit will be felt by the

recipients of his Foundation.

Be Like Brit is a U.S. registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization which operates a 19,000 square foot orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti. The Orphanage was built in loving memory of Britney Gengel, who perished in the 2010 Haiti earthquake while on a service trip through her college, Lynn University.

Be Like Brit honors Britney’s memory and legacy of compassion to those less fortunate, and was inspired by a text message she sent to her mother just 3 hours before the quake claimed her life. “They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself.”

After two and a half years of construction, Be Like Brit was dedicated and blessed in an ecumenical celebration of life and love on January 5, 2013. On what would have been Brit’s 23rd birthday, Be Like Brit brought in their first child, a three year old boy.

Today, Be Like Brit is home to 35 children, and employs more than 40 full-time employees. Hundreds of American and Canadian College Students and other volunteers visit or volunteer at Be Like Brit each year. Through the service work of others, we can all be more inspired to “Be Like Brit”.

Len Gengel hosted Peter over the Columbus Day week-end. Peter got to tour the orphanage and meet the children. It was inspirational for him to see the love and support that has been created through the devotion of Britney’s family and their supporters. The children’s basic needs are being met by wonderful caregivers and volunteers.

Funding from the Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation and many other groups and individuals has assisted in providing a nurturing ‘home’ for disadvantaged children as well as supporting their spiritual and emotional needs.

Peter was humbled by his visit and looks forward to future trips.

Rick Hoyt uses a wheelchair. That has not stopped him from living a very full and amazing life. He, along with his dad, Dick, have formed “Team Hoyt” and they have competed around the world doing marathons and triathlons.

The Hoyts have competed in over 1100 athletic events in the last 34 years. They have run in 70 marathons - 31 of them being the Boston Marathon. They have also completed in 252 triathlons, 6 of them being Ironman distance events.

Dick, 73, is a retired Lt. Colonel, having served in the military for 35 years. Rick, 51, is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in Special Education.

Rick was born in 1962 as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy and as a non-speaking person – but despite these disabilities, Rick’s mind and spirit have always been strong. His family supported his quest for

independence and inclusion in community, sports, education and the workplace, culminating with his graduation from Boston University.

Dick travels the country doing corporate and community presentations, educating the public about disability awareness and promoting the Team Hoyt motto, “Yes You Can”. Through his presentation, Dick shares his lifelong commitment to changing attitudes and educating others on the world of disabilities. He and his family have seen an impact from their efforts in the area of public attitude toward people with disabilities.

The Hoyt Foundation, Inc. (EI #22-2940515) is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1989. The Hoyt Foundation aspires to build the individual character, self-confidence and self-esteem of America’s disabled young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life; including in family and community activities, especially sports, at home, in schools, and in the workplace. Each year, Team Hoyt’s primary spokespeople, world renowned athletes, Dick and Rick Hoyt, show the world how to do this by speaking before community and professional groups, and by direct participation in many road races, triathlons and other endurance events. The Foundation also provides advice and support to groups and individuals who share this mission.

The “Yes You Can!” statue, created by sculptor Mike Tabor,

was commissioned by John Hancock Financial and donated

to the Town of Hopkinton. It was installed on the front lawn of the Center School, near the

Boston Marathon starting line.
