The Liebherr Group considers its presence at the 2014 Conexpo to have been highly successful. More than 20 exhibits from the Group’s earthmoving, material handling, tower crane, mobile and crawler crane, concrete technol-ogy, deep foundation and component product areas aroused strong approval. Compared with the 2011 Conexpo, the number of visitors was distinctly higher, and informative discussions were con-ducted with greater in-tensity than three years ago. As expected, most of the visitors to Las Vegas were from the North and South American markets, but the number of visi-tor groups from overseas countries such as Austra-lia, India and Scandinavia was a surprise. Many of Liebherr’s most impor-tant business associates from well-established Eu-ropean markets were also welcomed on the Group’s stand.

Exchanges of views with many of the earth-moving division’s custom-ers confirmed that higher construction-machinery efficiency is already an in-creasingly important fac-tor in purchase decisions – on markets targeted in North America. Also very favourably received was Liebherr’s work on re-structuring its sales and service organization in the USA.

The tower crane divi-sion was able to sign new orders for projects in a number of major US cities. Many more projects with good potential for the up-coming months were ini-tiated. The launch of the new luffing jib crane 710 HC-L was a great success.

Ambitious targets were also achieved in the deep foundation, duty-cycle ex-cavator and crawler crane business areas. There was special interest in the new LiSIM Simulator with its authentic display of com-plex construction-site work

sequences.The mobile crane divi-

sion, which has already reached a high volume of sales in the North American market, was able to conclude an un-expectedly large amount of new business. There was special interest in the LTM 1160-5.2 mobile crane, which was hav-ing its world premiere. Reactions to current in-vestment in the estab-lishment and buildup of mobile crane sales and service centres in Central and South America were also highly positive.

In the concrete technol-ogy area, the exhibits from the new concrete pump product area were very well received.

The components divi-sion, which exhibited at this year’s Conexpo for the first time, identified strong interest in the presentation of its “SCRonly” technol-ogy for stage IV or Tier 4 final diesel engines. Now that its components are being offered actively to customers outside the Li-ebherr Group, many of the initial contacts made at the Conexpo may well open up interesting prospects for fu-ture projects. b

ASSOCIATION

Tearing down the eastern Gardiner Ex-pressway and replac-ing it with any option that increases traffic congestion is not ac-ceptable, says a newly formed coalition of di-verse industry groups, which includes the On-tario Trucking Associa-tion.

Maintaining the Gar-diner’s capacity and improving its connec-tion to the waterfront is the best option in order to meet current and future needs of downtown core busi-ness operations and ensure mobility, safety and quality of life for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, the group stated in a press re-lease.

A report released by the City of Toronto is recommending that Council support re-moving the eastern ex-pressway that serves over 100,000 trips per

day. While removal is the recommendation, the report summarized four options, only one of which maintained its current lane capacity. The report is part of the broader objective of improving Toronto’s waterfront.

The coalition is made up of the Ontario Trucking Association, CAA South Central On-tario (CAA SCO), Cana-dian Courier & Logistics Association, Redpath Sugar, Ontario Motor Coach Association, To-ronto Industry Network and the Toronto Finan-cial District BIA. It will address the issues and impacts of the recom-mendation to remove the eastern Gardiner.

“Our coalition mem-bers all support the Waterfront Revitaliza-tion Project. We are in agreement that the Gar-diner Expressway can be improved without being removed. How-

ever, reducing capacity on the Gardiner would force more commuters and trucks on to To-ronto’s arterial roads putting the safety of drivers, cyclists and pe-destrians at risk. This would have an enor-mous impact not only on the GTA’s economy and road congestion, but also the quality of life for residents,” said Faye Lyons, Govern-ment Relations, CAA SCO.

Congestion is cost-ing the GTHA economy $11 billion per year, according to the C.D. Howe Institute, and both industry and the people of Toronto will be negatively affected if lanes on the Gardin-er are removed with-out providing access to new transit options. The coalition is con-cerned that the broader impacts on the existing Greater Toronto Area’s transportation network is not being given the level of consideration it should.

The recommendation to remove the Gardin-er also assumes that a

Downtown Relief Sub-way Line and addition-al transit lines includ-ing the Waterfront East LRT, the Yonge North Subway Extension and Broadview Avenue tran-

sit extension are immi-nent. However, none are currently funded. The competitiveness and vitality of Toronto’s downtown core must be a high priority, ac-cording to the coalition.

“Toronto’s congestion, if not improved, will continue to discourage businesses to locate in the city, and will con-tribute to the frustration of those trying to get around,” said Lyons. b Dynapac introduces the

F800T 8ft Track paver, a perfect complement to the existing 10ft highway class paver range. The next gen-eration of highway class 8ft pavers is ready to tackle in-dustry’s present challenges and be the leader of future generation North American Pavers.Power packed performance

Dynapac F800T Track paver exceeds the power requirements for varying job site conditions, be it on a minimum paving width of 8ft or at full width of 19 ft. The power source of 173 hp is provided from a re-nowned Cummins QSB 6.7 Tier 4 Final engine. Having a 6 cylinder engine to pro-duce the required power reduces the load on the engine components and in-creases the longevity. The use of ECO mode setting for paving further reduces the fuel consumption.

All the hydraulic com-ponents are oversized and kept the same as the 10ft paver (F1000) range re-ducing the heat generation and reducing fatigue load, hence increasing the life of components significantly. Using the same compo-nents between the mod-els also reduces the parts count and increases spare

parts availability. The large-sized efficient

cross flow cooling sys-tem with Hydraulic-driven temperature-dependent variable speed fan reduces the noise level significantly and uses less power from engine, thus allowing more useful power for paving needs. The efficient cooling system allows the paver to perform well in extreme temperature conditions. The bypass valve on Hy-draulic oil cooler brings the temperature of the hydrau-lic system quickly to the re-quired operating conditions and reducing the idle time even on cold mornings.Traction gains attraction

Dynapac F800T Track paver is equipped with a high performance friction-al undercarriage system which is capable of push-ing the trucks even when the hopper is fully loaded with asphalt. The entire weight of the Paver is sup-ported by three oversized sets (four wheels/set) of oscillating bogie wheels al-lowing the paver to run on uneven surfaces without affecting the mat quality. The heavy duty torque hub combined with 2 speed hydraulic motor provides ample torque while paving and travel speeds up to 8.5 mph to transport between jobs. The low deck height with proper positioning of the centre of gravity con-tributes to a very smooth ride. These heavy duty components combined with the renowned precise electronic propulsion and steering systems makes the Dynapac F800T paver truly versatile for any kind of highway or large commer-cial applications.Smooth material flow

Smooth and consistent material flow is very im-portant to achieve best mat quality behind a paver. Care for smooth flow of material starts from the time the truck touches the push roller to dump the as-phalt on the hopper, all the way to when it gets prop-erly laid by the screed. To ensure smooth and contin-uous flow of material, the engineers spent enormous effort in mapping the se-ries of events and came out with the industry’s best in-novative features. Patented

Safe Impact push roller sys-tems, Chamfered Hoppers, the dual bar feed convey-ors and world’s thinnest auger chain box are some of those innovative fea-tures ensuring best flow of material to achieve the best mat quality.

Dynapac F800 series pav-ers will be equipped with the optional Patented Safe impact push roller system which solves the problem of trucks bumping into the paver. When a truck bumps into the paver, the Safe im-pact push roller system ab-sorbs the shock and ensures the shock is not transmitted to the screed, which is very normal with the convention-al push roller systems.

The material hopper can hold up to 13.5 tons of as-phalt which is on par with the largest material hop-pers available in this class of machines. Innovative chamfered corners reduces the sticking of asphalt at the corners and also allows ease of cleaning with the shovels at the end of paving. Dyna-pac F800 series pavers will also be equipped with op-tional hydraulically operated aprons which eliminate the material spillage at the front and also allow easy dump-ing of residual asphalt back into the hopper.

The independently con-trolled dual bar feed con-veyor system combined with large auger flights ensures continuous flow of material. The 17” diameter auger flight is the largest in the industry, attached to the world’s thinnest 6” cen-ter chain box, eliminating the centerline segregation. Both auger and conveyor speed control is achieved thru a precise integrated feed control system using 4 ultrasonic sensors. The op-tional integrated hydraulic tunnel eliminates the ma-terial spillage towards the track and provides optimal head of material. The operator is in control

The paving operation in general requires lot of attention from the opera-tor to make proper adjust-ment to the paver and also constantly communicate to the truck driver and screed operator. That’s why Atlas Copco always follows the “Keep it simple and make it work” philosophy. This is ensured in the F800 se-ries paver as well, with dual swing out operator consoles fitted with simple toggle switches and con-trols enabling the opera-

tor to focus on the paving process not the paver itself. The switches are grouped for the specific operation and frequency of its use, allowing operators to react quickly for the varying job site conditions. Both opera-tor consoles are fitted with electronic displays which provide accurate informa-tion of paving parameters.

Visibility is one of the key factors when it comes to pavers. F800 series pavers are designed with operator visibility as No.1 key factor as was done with the 10ft paver series. The low oper-ating deck and engine cover height, dual swing out op-erator consoles and proper positioning of the operator station closer to the auger compartment make the op-erator constantly in commu-nication with truck driver and screed men to control and achieve best paving pro-cess. Industry leading legendary Carlson Screed

The screed gets same importance as the paver to achieve best mat quality. That’s why Dynapac offers the F800 series pavers with industry-leading legend-ary Carlson EZ08-15 front mounted electrical screed.

Options like safety edges, berm attachments and bolt on extensions are also of-fered.

Controls for the screed operator are still fitted with simplified toggle switches, enabling access even with gloved hands. The load sensing hydraulic system provides faster response to varying widths and slope changes and consumes less power.

Power for screed electri-cal heating is provided by a tractor-mounted, gen-erously oversized, 34kV hydraulically-driven gen-erator. The generator also provides ample reserve power to connect night lighting accessories and wide width packages. The unique feature of the gen-erator system is the fre-quency control at 60Hz all the time regardless of the load or speed of the engine enabling connection of fre-quency-dependent tools or accessories.Maximizing uptime

Dynapac F800 series is designed to maximize your uptime with simplified ser-vice concepts. It all starts with using off-the-shelf hydraulic and electrical components. The hydraulic system is fitted with redun-

dant circuits and manual overrides to keep the pav-er up and running all the time, and also has quick disconnect fittings to test the pressures spillage-free.

The pavers are getting more complicated over the years to work or trouble-shoot. With Dynapac F800 series paver, this problem is solved by simple relay logic system and a reduced number of computers, en-abling very easy way of tracking the electrical sys-tem. The DP200 display on both consoles provides en-gine and paver related fault codes, making it easier for the operator and techni-cians to understand the situation and take correc-tive action. Calibration of the hydraulic pumps and electrical devices such as joysticks are possible from DP200 display itself, hence removing the need of lap-top at the jobsite.

The central location of all the filters and other maintenance related items reduces the time required to do the scheduled pre-ventive maintenance. With Cummins Tier IV technol-ogy, the maintenance in-terval on the engine is in-creased to 500 hrs.

Effi cient hydraulics, loads of cooling capacity, 300 hp, extremely low groundpressure and legendary Tigercat build quality for highest uptime and machineavailability in severe duty ROW pipeline and exploration applications.

Environmental benefitsAtlas Copco is proud

to announce that they are the first manufacturer to produce Highway class 8ft pavers with Tier IV final emission norms to North

America. The Tier 4 final engine reduces exhaust emission of Particulate Matter by 90% and NOx by 90%. Noise is also kept down through the use of a hydraulically-driven, tem-perature-controlled cooling

fan. The ECO mode com-

bined with an improved common rail technology engine reduces the fuel consumption significantly over previous generation engines. b From the moment heavy

equipment leaves a manu-facturer’s lot, it begins los-ing value. Owners can best protect their investment by regularly putting equip-ment to work and taking good care of items. How-ever, not all owners follow this advice. It’s not uncom-mon for equipment yards to have an overabundance of underutilized or poorly maintained machines that have been long forgotten. Bottom line: heavy equip-ment is a depreciating asset that loses value over time. If a piece of equipment is not put to work, it’s not generating revenue and is actually costing the owner money.

As the economy con-tinues to improve, it’s im-portant for fleet managers to think about their equip-ment inventory and cash flow so that they can better understand how to manage their organization’s assets.

When assessing wheth-er to keep or sell equip-ment, organizations should take the following into con-sideration:1. Current buyer demand

Fleet managers should consult auction compa-nies to assess the cur-rent market conditions for their items. This will make it easier to deter-

mine if selling the equip-ment makes sense or if it is wiser to wait for buyer demand to increase. For-tunately, online heavy equipment auctions pro-vide an opportunity to reach buyers outside of an owner’s region. By doing so, owners can reach buy-ers who may be willing to pay more. Thus, even in the middle of winter in Canada, a seller can con-nect with a buyer in a warmer climate or a faster growing economy to gen-erate a better price.

While fleet owners of-ten write off equipment that is no longer function-ing or is operating at re-duced performance levels, it’s important to remem-ber that everything has a value. Not all buyers are interested in machines in perfect condition, as this can drive the purchase price higher. In fact, some purchase equipment just for the parts, attachments or as rebuilds. Today, on-line auctions provide a variety of equipment in different conditions. This draws in a diverse audi-ence of buyers and allows fleet managers to capital-ize on demand for any and all equipment. 2. Upcoming pipeline of projects

If an organization an-ticipates a steady flow of future business, it makes sense to hold onto equip-ment. However, if there are few upcoming projects, it is recommended that own-ers assess which types of equipment are not being used on a regular basis. It may make sense to keep equipment such as excava-tors, crawler tractors and compactors in the fleet as this common core equip-ment can be utilized for a variety of work. However, selling specialty items and older underutilized core equipment at auction may be beneficial to the busi-ness. The funds can be used by the business to purchase newer, more reli-able equipment or specific specialty equipment for the upcoming work.3. Cash profit

Sometimes, an organi-zation will find itself in need of some quick cash. As banks become increas-

ingly strict about lending, businesses are forced to prove that they are good credit risks. Keeping idle equipment lying around makes a business less liquid. To demonstrate liquidity, companies can sell old equipment to get cash rather than having money tied up in assets. This can greatly improve a company’s balance sheet.

Selling idle equipment also allows organizations to reinvest the profit into equipment that will be more suitable for the sea-son and/or their current list of business projects. In fact, turning inven-tory over can sometimes give an organization more space to expand the types of projects they take on by purchasing specialty equipment or additional core equipment. The prof-it made from selling idle equipment can also be used in other areas of the business, such as manag-ing taxes or payroll. 4. Storage requirements

Idle equipment requires appropriate storage in or-der to protect machines from harsh weather, van-dalism and theft. Owners should regularly review current inventory so that they can determine which equipment is taking up the most space or requires the largest storage investment. If large or costly items are not used on a regular basis, it may be beneficial to sell them at auction.5. Maintenance requirements

When equipment is not regularly maintained, parts or attachments can become worn and seize up. Tires may lose trac-tion and low fluid levels can result in damage. The older equipment gets, the more attention and main-tenance it will likely re-quire. Additionally, when colder months arrive, fleet managers may have to move equipment indoors, winterize the systems and periodically run the ma-chines to keep them in satisfactory working or-der.

Owners have to decide if it makes sense to repair the equipment over time or if it is more cost effective to sell it and replace it with a more reliable machine. Owners should assess the expected maintenance costs of each machine, es-pecially if items aren’t be-ing used for extended peri-

ods of time or if they are at the end of their life.

After fleet managers have consulted trusted equipment experts and weighed each of the above points, they may find that selling their used equip-ment is the best course of action. Partnering with a trusted online marketplace to assist in the disposal of their equipment will en-sure a quick and smooth process. Sellers save mon-ey because they don’t have to transport equipment to an auction yard. Transpor-tation costs can be consid-erable, especially if equip-ment has to travel a great

distance to the physical auction site or if it is dam-aged and requires special transport.

Online auctions also provide faster time to cash when compared to tradi-tional physical auctions, especially when they occur

on a weekly basis. Equip-ment can be listed and sold in a timely and cost effec-tive manner, which can be a huge help to any organi-zation.

Finally, online auctions get sellers in touch with a vast global buyer base.

Reaching more buyers will help yield true mar-ket prices and give own-ers the highest net return possible on their equip-ment assets. bBy Franklin Langham, Vice President of Sales, Iron-Planet

The new Cat MH3037 is the third member of the new wheeled material han-dler line that Caterpillar is introducing in the greater-than-25-ton size class. The new Cat material handlers are purpose-built to work productively and durably in industrial, scrap recycling, millyard and waterway ap-plications, while affording maximum protection and convenience for the opera-tor. A patented “ground en-try and exit” with a step-in cab that lowers to the front or the side of the machine enhances convenience and safety for operators and service personnel.

The MH3037 has an op-erating weight of 82,900 pounds (37 600 kg) and is powered by the Cat AC-ERT C7 engine featuring an electronically controlled, mechanically actuated, unit-injector fuel system that uses multiple-injection fuel delivery for optimum power and economy in all

operating situations. The MH3037 configuration is rated at 225 horsepower (168 kW).

High strength struc-tural steel and advanced welding techniques en-sure structural integrity. A powerful hydraulic system provides rapid response with efficiency, and new serviceability features sim-plify maintenance. These design elements combine to provide low-cost opera-tion and maximum value for MH3037 owners.Structures and hydraulics

Major structures use continuous welds that in-corporate extensive cham-fering and beveling to re-duce stress concentration. Booms and sticks are con-structed from single-piece top and side plates to elimi-nate the need for seams and internal baffles. The upper frame is designed specifically to dissipate loads transferred through

the front linkage and coun-terweight, and the lower frame has a unique, ta-pered design to evenly dis-tribute loads and reduces stress. Oversized pins and bushings strengthen pivot points. In addition, exten-sive finite element analysis and strain-gauge testing throughout the design pro-cess help ensure long-term durability. Along with a 29-ft (8.8-m) boom, the MH3037 can be equipped with a short 19 ft 8 in. (6 m) or long 23 ft 6 in. (7.2 m) front configuration to best fit the application.

Using a closed-centre, one-pump, load-sensing implement hydraulic sys-tem with electro-hydraulic pilot control, the hydraulic pump generates only as much oil flow and pres-sure as required for the application, yielding pow-erful, rapid response and fuel-saving efficiency. To further enhance overall hydraulic power and effi-

ciency, the machine regen-erates boom-down oil flow, reducing the volume of oil the pump must produce.

Reflecting the pre-cise hydraulic design, the MH3037 divides hydraulic functions between the up-per and lower main con-trol valves, with the upper valve managing the boom, stick, work tools, cab riser and cooling circuits, and the lower valve controlling travel, steering and outrig-gers. This provides optimal flow management to allow multiple machine functions to operate at the same time without compromising per-formance. An independent, closed-loop swing system maintains swing priority at all times.

The hydraulic oil cooler, air-to-air aftercooler (ATA-AC), and engine radiator are all mounted side-by-side to reduce clogging caused by airborne debris and to provide better ac-cess for cleaning when necessary. Working with an auto-reversing fan, the cooling system ensures optimum operating tem-peratures between 140 and 160F (60 to 71C) are main-tained—which protects oil quality, extends com-ponent life and promotes

optimum machine perfor-mance.

The power train of the MH3037 incorporates limited-slip differentials on both the front and rear axles to provide true all-wheel-drive performance. A variable displacement hydraulic motor coupled with a two-speed trans-mission provides high- and low-speed travel with creeper speed capability for excellent control due to the infinitely variable travel speed. An oscillating rear axle with oscillation lock provides the capability to work on rough, uneven terrain while maintaining the stability to work free on wheels without outriggers deployed.Operator safety and convenience

The hydraulic cab-riser system features patented “ground entry and exit” with a step-in cab, enhanc-ing safety for operators and service personnel. Cab height is adjustable up to an eye level of 18 feet (5.5 m). On the MH3037, raise time from ground level to maximum height is approx-imately 8 seconds; lower-ing time from maximum height to ground level is 10 seconds. Adjustable sen-

sors control the height of the cab above the ground. Manual safety override valves in the cab and at ground level enable the cab to be lowered safely in the event of engine power loss. This allows the operator to exit the cab safely.

The MH3037 can be equipped with an optional impact-absorbing Falling Objects Guarding System (FOGS). This includes a top guard to protect the operator from falling debris and a front guard to protect from flying debris in the work area. An adjustable limiter prevents work tool contact with the cab, and load-holding valves on hy-draulic cylinders prevent sudden uncontrolled drop of the boom, stick, cab or outriggers in the event of a failed hydraulic hose.

Images from the stan-dard rearview camera are displayed via a high-defini-tion color monitor. A sepa-rate monitor displays oper-ating parameters, starting fluid level, machine warn-ings and activated work functions, which are con-veniently controlled with the joysticks. The system allows operators to set functions according to

The new Terex FD5000 “Great Lakes” front dis-charge mixer truck, which was on display at CONEX-PO-CON/AGG 2014, March 4-8 in Las Vegas, Nev., is the first Terex mixer truck powered by a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) en-gine. The new 12-liter Cummins ISX12G engine is available in 350, 385 and 400-hp (261, 287 and 298 kW) packages with respective torque settings of 1,450, 1350 and 1450 ft lb (1965, 1830 and 1965 Nm), delivering compa-rable performance to die-sel power package options for Terex mixer trucks.

“Previous 9-liter en-gines available on the market didn’t provide the power or torque re-quired for our customers and their applications,” says Dave Rinas, Director of Sales and Marketing for Terex Construction. “The 12-liter engines de-liver the required perfor-mance and a substantial fuel cost savings benefit when compared to diesel engines. We already have several customer orders for the CNG trucks.”

Terex CNG trucks fea-ture an integrated design approach, and the CNG engines are available for the entire line of standard

tion and allow better sight lines to the work area. The cab includes a polycarbon-ate skylight, removable panes and a rear window that serves as an emergen-cy exit.Serviceability and work tools

and federal bridge formu-la front discharge mixers – from three to seven ax-les. The CNG engines can also be ordered as part of the Terex glider truck pro-gram. “Everything below the frame rail and forward of the rear pedestal is the same as on our diesel mixer trucks,” says Mike Johnson, Design Engineer for Terex. “The CNG sys-tem eliminates much of the complexity that goes along with 2013 EPA-compliant engines, while still reducing hydrocarbon emissions.”

The Terex design mounts one, 26 x 80-in (66 x 203 cm) Type-4 CNG tank to each side of the rear frame, providing a 75 diesel equivalent gallon (284 liter) capac-ity. The design delivers a lower center of grav-ity compared to other installations; reduces the number of required tanks, hoses and tank safety systems by 50%; and places all tank safe-ty shut-off valves, fill ports and service items at ground level. This unique mounting ap-proach features a spheri-cal bearing design that allows for tank length and diameter expan-sion/contraction when

filling and compensates for frame flexing when driving in off-road con-ditions, unlike the rigid strap-mount of competi-tive tank designs.

The two-tank Terex CNG configuration re-duces weight by up to 25% over other designs, which helps to improve payload capabilities. Up to 50% of internal steel was removed from the new engine cowling for CNG trucks – further re-ducing truck weight to improve payload capac-ity – while the design’s new ribs and contours add strength and style for this new integrated Terex look. Weight dis-tribution between axles of CNG and traditional diesel-fuelled mixer trucks are virtually iden-tical, so reconfiguration of truck design to com-pensate for weight distri-bution is not necessary.

The Terex FD5000 “Great Lakes” CNG front discharge mixer enjoys the same design enhancements recently introduced on their die-sel-powered truck coun-terparts. The steering system takes advantage of the front axle’s full wheel cut capability, re-ducing turn radius by

Handrails and anti-slip sur-faces help technicians per-form their work safely and efficiently.

Greaseless bearings in the cab riser linkage re-duce maintenance, and up-per auto-lube sends grease based on runtime. The ma-chine is set at the factory to lubricate grease points ev-ery 15 minutes of use. The lower is manually lubri-cated from a central grease point located behind the lower control valve on the carbody frame.

The MH3037 comes equipped with PL522 Cat Product Link to provide timely, useful information about machine status and utilization. The informa-tion enables managers to make timely, fact-based decisions about equipment assets.

up to 25% over previous designs. The air system features a 127 part-count reduction, resulting in fewer connections for less air leakage potential. The lift axles are now controlled by a single Lift Axle Control Module (LACM), which replaces four valves per axle, im-proving system servicing ease.

Inside the cab, taller drivers will benefit from an additional 8.5 in (21.6 cm) of floor space. A redesigned dashboard features logical position-ing of gauges, including a traditional style fuel gauge, for improved operating efficiency. Brighter LED cabin light-ing with door entry switch makes it easier to enter/exit the cab. Rear vents and louvers help to improve cab heating and make it easier to close the door. Accessing the cab is now easier, thanks to the stair rail handle and flex-ible hanging third step.

The Terex FD5000 CNG front discharge mixer truck is powered by the 400 hp (298 kW), 1450 ft lb (1,965 Nm) CNG engine. It has an 11 yd3 (8.4 m3) mixer drum that requires no nose cone and excels in discharging low-slump concrete. Its drum shell is constructed with AR400 steel, and 0.25 in (0.64 cm) thick AR230 steel fins and flights in the mixing area improve wear resistance. Bolt-on trun-nion rollers provide easier adjustment and simplified servicing. b

The machine features me-dium-pressure flow from a separate valve for tool rotation and a high-pres-sure circuit from the main pump to operate the open/close functions of typical tools, such as orange-peel grapples, clamshells and log grapples. A separate

pump is used to provide hydraulic power to operate a generator for an optional scrap magnet. The genera-tor features a patented Cat solid-state magnet control-ler that eliminates typical maintenance issues and is supported and warranted through Cat dealers. b

By way of a quick re-cap, hydraulic fractur-

ing or fracking in the gas and oil industry involves the pumping, at very high pressure, of thousands of gallons of a liquid, usually water along with a mix of silica sand and/or resin-coated sand, and/or man-

made ceramics and a cock-tail mix of other chemicals, down a gas or oil wellbore. This pressurized mixture breaks up or fractures the surrounding shale or mud-stone rock formations cre-ating fissures or cracks, which enables the release of the trapped gas. This

gas is then captured within the well bore and brought to the surface along with a percentage of the frack-ing liquid. Recently, other forms of fracking have been attempted but hy-draulic fracturing is still the most widely used.

The GoodOn the pro or good side

of the debate, hydraulic fracturing has been safety used by the industry to stimulate oil and gas well production in North Ameri-can conventional reservoirs for more than 60 years. It has also been successfully

used in other applications such as water wells.

Shale gas is emerging as the new low-cost source of natural gas in North Amer-ica and is currently one of the fastest growing energy sources in the US. In the year 2000, shale gas repre-sented one percent of the natural gas supplies in the USA. Today, that number is 30 percent and rising rap-idly with more than 40,000 producing wells as state after state have approved hydro-fracking as a means of shale gas extraction.1

Large-scale commercial production of shale gas is still being developed in Canada. There are a num-ber of companies that are exploring for and develop-ing shale gas resources in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes with the largest concentration lying within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, which extends from northeastern British Columbia to south-west Manitoba.

Additionally, significant deposits of natural gas trapped in coal and shale seams have been identified in Eastern and Western Europe, Australia, China, South Africa and the cone of South America.2

The supporters of the development of shale gas extraction at both local, re-gional and global levels ar-gue that shale gas will help ensure that economically viable supplies of natural gas are available to the growing natural gas mar-ket for decades to come. It is clear that huge benefits, both economic and envi-ronmental, are to be had as a result of shale gas ex-traction through the use of hydro-fracking. The taxa-tion benefits to all levels of government also cannot be overlooked when assessing the industry.

Experts, including some environmental groups, are quick to point out that hydro-fracking is not only economically viable but is safe for humans, animals and the environment. For example, regulation of the Canadian oil and gas sector is designed to protect drink-ing water and water quality in our lakes and streams. The specific regulations vary between jurisdictions but in all cases, Canadian natural gas production al-ways isolates and protects drinking water (groundwa-ter) from natural gas opera-tions.3

In the United States, the

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working closely with states and oth-er key stakeholders to help ensure that natural gas extraction does not come at the expense of public health and the environ-ment. The Agency’s focus and obligations under the law are to provide over-sight, guidance and, where appropriate, rule making that achieves the best pos-sible protections for air, water and land.4

Regulation in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America is somewhat dif-ferent. In these regions mineral rights often belong to the governments of most of the countries, making effective coordinated regu-lations somewhat more la-borious.

Without fracking, it ap-pears to be difficult if not impossible to get this shale trapped natural gas out of the ground.

The BadThose opposed to hy-

draulic fracturing for the harvest or capture of natu-ral gas and oil are very vo-cal and, at first glance ap-pear to have a strong case.

To fracture, or open up the shale’s pores, can take between one million and as much as twenty million gallons of highly pressur-ized fracking fluid made of water, chemicals and sand. Much of this water is col-lected from ground water wells, aquifers and surface water, potentially taking life-giving water resources from people, animals and agriculture. The water used for gas and oil production is considered to be consumed water, since it comes into contact with hydrocarbons and other contaminants and cannot be returned to the environment without additional treatment. In-creasingly, companies are being forced to treat the fluids used for fracturing and recycle them. If the fluid is not recycled, it is recovered and disposed of as required by governmen-tal regulations.8

A percentage of the fracking fluid is indeed re-turned to the surface but a greater percentage is left underground. Once this cocktail mix of fluid is re-turned to the surface, anal-ysis has shown that it may contain up to 600 chemicals and naturally occurring hazardous materials. These could include known car-

Ontario is now the first jurisdiction in North Amer-ica to fully eliminate coal as a source of electricity gen-eration. The Thunder Bay Generating Station, On-tario’s last remaining coal-fired facility, has burned its last supply of coal.

Operated by Ontario Pow-er Generation, Thunder Bay Generating Station was the oldest coal-fired station in the province. The plant is sched-uled to be converted to burn advanced biomass, a renew-able fuel source. The province has replaced coal generation with a mix of emission-free electricity sources like nucle-ar, waterpower, wind and solar, along with lower-emis-sion electricity sources like natural gas and biomass.

Ontario has fulfilled its commitment to end coal generation in advance of its target of the end of 2014. A

coal-free electricity supply mix has led to a significant reduction in harmful emis-sions, as well as cleaner air and a healthier environ-ment.

Providing clean, reli-

able and affordable power is part of the government’s economic plan that is cre-ating jobs for today and tomorrow. The compre-hensive plan and its six pri-orities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths - its peo-ple and strategic partner-ships. b

cinogens and toxins such as lead, uranium, mercury, ethylene glycol, radium, methanol, hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde to name just a few. In many regions there often are no facilities for storing or disposing of this fracking fluid. So it is argued that if this post fracking analysis is accurate, a percentage of this same mix is left un-derground causing many people to be worried about these chemicals leaching into their drinking water.

Additionally, to get this job done requires a huge influx of people and large, heavy equipment, both of which come with their own set of problems and concerns.

It is estimated that it can take up to 400 tanker trucks to carry water and supplies to and from the well site. This truck traffic puts additional harmful ex-haust gasses into the atmo-sphere and of course, more potential road-damaging traffic to contended with.

Those opposed to the pro-cess also point to the large land-use footprint around each drilling/fracking loca-tion, the construction of ad-ditional access roads and of course pipelines.

Climate change is an-

Continued from page 12 other risk. Methane, a much stronger greenhouse gas than carbon diox-ide, is emitted into the atmo-sphere during the extrac-tion process.

Some regions in the USA, Britain and Spain have also experienced earthquakes associated with the disposal of frack-ing waste underground.5,6

These concerns are not overlooked by gov-ernments at all levels as hydraulic fracturing for shale gas has been banned in over 200 communities across the US as well as in France and Bulgaria.7 It is also under tight gov-ernment scrutiny in many other regions, including Australia.

The UglyUnless you have a

magic show in Las Vegas, setting your tap water on fire will not likely be high on anyone’s list of things to do. But that is not the case with homeowners in several areas around North America including Alberta, Colorado, Wyoming, Okla-homa and Pennsylvania where well water taken from within a couple of kilometres or a mile of a fracking site was found to be high in methane. All have documented proof

that setting their tap water on fire was very possible. Thus, it is highly recom-mended for these folks… please do not smoke in the shower.

The ConclusionAt Post Publishers/Sup-

ply Post, we are pleased to be able to present some of the facts surrounding this highly controversial issue in this two-part se-ries. Whether your posi-tion is pro or con, or you are still researching and are undecided regarding shale gas production as a result of hydraulic fracturing or fracking, we invite you to use this article as a start-ing point, do your research and base your decision on the facts. There is plenty of solid research available to support both sides of the debate allowing for the best conclusion… yours. b

Pit and quarry opera-tors can look forward to more innovative ways to wash sand, gravel, ag-gregates, and C&D waste thanks to two new solu-tions from Terex Washing Systems (TWS) to be offi-cially launched and show-cased at Hillhead 2014, in Buxton, Derbyshire from the 24th to the 26th of June.

Hillhead will provide the stage to showcase the Terex Aggresand Range to include the 165 (up to 250tph) and the latest ad-

dition, the new larger Ter-ex Aggresand 206 (up to 400tph), as well as the Ter-ex Aggrescrub 150 (up to 150tph) plant. These new innovative modular wash plants will help to revolu-tionize the washing market on a global level.3 Aggregates, 2 Sands, 1 Machine

The Aggresand 206 wash plant is the larger model of the recently launched Aggresand 165 (up to 250tph) model and has greater capac-ity, up to 400tph, and

comprises a 20x6 screen with two and three deck options. The Aggresand 206 plant brings modern modular design features, increases productivity (up to 400tph), and shares all the unique features of the Aggresand 165 wash plant. Customers will benefit from the unique design which includes full containerization of the machine for ease of transportation, rapid set-up time, pre-wired & pre-plumbed plug & play componentry, isolated

spray bars and a HMI con-trol system, which have been delivering efficient, productive performance for current owners. In addition, the level of ser-viceability within the Ag-gresand wash plant range is unrivalled within the industry with innovative features such as rolling chutes and rolling centrif-ugal pumps. TWS has also included sensors through-out the machine providing the operator with infor-mation on water pressure, cyclone feed pressure, and electrical power con-sumption, making the op-eration and management of the machine highly ef-ficient.

Director of TWS, Sean Loughran, commented, “The market has really embraced the Aggresand wash plant concept with exceptional demand at the moment around the world. To date, TWS has installed multiple Aggresand 165 wash plants in Ireland, UK, parts of Eastern Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Austria. Customers are also finding it easier to se-cure planning and finance for these modular plants as opposed to traditional static set ups. We are constantly looking at innovative ways to further enhance and de-velop our existing products so we can continue to meet the individual needs of our customers.”

Quarry owner, Hum-phrey Dowling, proud owner of the first ever Ag-gresand wash plant com-mented, “The throughput currently being achieved on the plant is excellent and the quality of the ag-gregates and sands being produced is very impres-sive. The high performance two deck vibrating grid allows us to feed mate-rial directly from the face

of the quarry, at 200mm, large material is scalped off while the minus 50mm ma-terial goes straight into the wash plant. This eliminates the need for expensive pre-screening of the feed mate-rial.”New High Attrition Scrubbing

The second new innova-tive product to be unveiled at Hillhead 2014 is the new Aggrescrub 150 (up to 150tph) plant, particularly suited to the C&D recy-cling market. Key benefits for customers include the improved wear characteris-tics, reduced costs, and the ability to effectively scrub aggregates and float out clays/silts/lights (wood/plastics) on one chassis. In addition, there are also a number of paddle op-tions available depending on customers’ needs, in-cluding the traditional hard wearing HARDOX blades in 15 and 30mm variances as well as a new high man-ganese steel option.

Terex Materials Pro-cessing (Powerscreen and Terex Finlay) has a long history in the manufac-ture of logwashers and the experience gained in the field has resulted in what is truly a 21st century ag-gregate scrubbing plant. It also shares many of the innovative features of the Aggresand range including modular design, quick and easy set-up, pre-plumed pipework, pre-wired elec-trics, a HMI control panel and a web frame chassis design.

The hull acts as a scrubber and also as a water bath. The Terex Aggrescrub 150 model is fitted with a newly orien-tated DW062 (6’x2’) trash dewatering screen which dewaters any floated off trash including plastics and organics. The scrubbed ag-

gregate is rinsed and sized on a DW125-2D (12’x5’) two deck screen, to pro-duce three clean aggregates for stock piling. Access and serviceability on the Ag-grescrub plant is second to none with full galvanized walkway access around the entire plant.Seamless Integration

Another unique benefit to customers is the abil-ity of the Terex Aggresand wash plant and Terex Ag-grescrub 150 plant to com-bine to provide the perfect solution for customers dealing with recycling ap-plications as well as pit owners with high agglom-erations of clay. The in-novative, intelligent and user-friendly control sys-tem on both plants allows full integration between the two systems through the connection of a single plug-and-play cable. Through this pioneering control system, seamless commu-nication allows the plants to work as a single entity with all interlocks includ-ing start-up and shutdown sequences automatically synchronizing, which fur-ther minimizes the amount of on-site installation & commissioning required. Indeed the Aggresand and Aggrescrub combination is set to become the bench-mark in modular wash re-cycling plants for years to come.

Hillhead will provide the first opportunity for customers to see firsthand these innovative washing solutions. A team of skilled engineers, applications and sales technicians will be there to provide expert advice and guidance with your specific requirements.

Caterpillar announces the new MD5150C Track Drill, the first of the C Se-ries drills, which feature Cat components—proven reliable and available from local Cat dealers who also service the drills. The MD5150C de-livers top-of-class power and high airflow for fast, efficient drilling of holes from 4 inches (101.6 mm) to 6 inches (152 mm) in diameter. The MD5150C offers a choice of three different rock drills, patented carousel rod changer, ergonomic cab and many other fea-tures that boost produc-tivity and reduce operat-ing costs.

Compared to the MD5125, which the MD5150C will replace, the new drill has 18 percent more power, a compres-sor that can deliver 33 percent more air volume and 40 percent more air pressure, 19 percent faster tram speed and 40 percent greater ground clearance.Reduce costs with reliable rock drill

High reliability, long life and low ownership costs characterize the MD5150C rock drill. With less than half as many moving parts as competi-tive rock drills, it is a sim-ple, reliable design that offers dependable perfor-mance and exceptional durability. Caterpillar is the only manufacturer offering rock drills de-signed to be serviced on site—to reduce downtime and control costs. Service doesn’t require a clean room, and there’s no need to incur freight costs to ship the rock drill to the OEM for maintenance or to keep a spare rock drill in stock to accommodate

maintenance downtime. The rock drill also fea-

tures an automated lube system, which eliminates the need to stop the ma-chine for manual greasing every two hours. Three different rock drill choices enable matching the selec-tion to the application to achieve the highest pro-duction rate. The standard rock drill on the MD5150C is the HPR5128, which uses 51-mm drill steel. Also available are the HPR6832 Rock Drill, which can use 68-mm speed rod, and the HPR6030 designed for 60-mm drill steel.Innovative carousel rod changer slashes setup time

The MD5150C dramati-cally reduces setup time, thanks to its innovative carousel rod changer.

The rod changer and feed assembly have seven patents pending. The sys-tem holds six rods and ac-commodates two lengths and multiple diameters of drill steel. Powerful dual-rod grippers and a unique gate design let the rod and gate move simultaneously, reduc-ing cycle time. The rod changer is supported by a sturdy feed and heavy-duty 9-ft (2.7-m) boom that extends to 11 ft (3.3 m) for larger pattern cov-erage with fewer setups. Because the carousel rod changer weighs less and holds more rods than lin-ear models, the boom ex-tension can reach farther and drill deeper while maintaining stability. Holes can be drilled with-in 24 inches (610 mm) of the highwall, which is 50 percent closer than with a linear rod changer.Cut cycle time with high power and big air

The MD5150C deliv-ers exceptional power and airflow for faster, more ef-ficient drilling in hard rock applications. The heart of the power group is the Cat C11 Engine rated at 287 kW (385 hp) at 1,800 rpm. Designed for high perfor-mance and excellent fuel efficiency, the engine meets US Tier 3 and EU Stage IIIA emissions standards. The high-horsepower engine works as a system with a high-capacity air compres-sor to optimize air flow. An oversized, high-efficiency cooling system further im-proves performance and life.Cab enhances safety and productivity

The cab on the MD5150C is designed to enhance safety and pro-ductivity. It is ROPS/FOPS-certified and pro-vides numerous shutdown controls accessible from the ground. Large win-dows, streamlined front structures and a skylight enhance visibility, as do well-placed mirrors and a high-resolution camera. The front window pro-vides an emergency exit.

To boost operator com-fort and productivity, the cab features automatic climate control, excellent ventilation, a fully adjust-able seat, ergonomic con-trols and switches, and low sound levels (approximate-ly 80 decibels).

To further improve op-erator productivity, the machine is equipped with a smart drill monitoring system that tracks changes in rock formation and au-tomatically adjusts impact and feed pressure based on hardness of the rock. Anti-jam, anti-plunge and anti-plug capabilities keep the track drill working ef-ficiently and extend drill string life.Maximize uptime with quick maintenance

Service technicians benefit from the simple component layout and convenient service access. A walk-in service station provides easy access to major service points for the engine, compressor, air conditioner, hydraulic valves and more. A boom-

mounted camera provides a view of the front of the drill while working inside the service center.

In addition to its ser-viceable design, the new track drill leverages ex-clusive Caterpillar tech-nologies that maximize uptime. Cat Electronic Technician speeds the troubleshooting process, improving repair accuracy and reducing downtime. Cat Product Link allows remote monitoring of ma-chine location, service meter hours, fuel usage and other critical factors, providing managers the information they need to optimize utilization and reduce costs.

Cat dealers support the new MD5150C with best-in-class parts availability, quality repairs and equip-ment management exper-tise that helps miners and contractors meet aggres-sive production goals at the lowest cost per ton.

For more informa-tion about how the new Cat MD5150C Track Drill can improve productivity and drive down operating costs, customers should contact a local Cat dealer or visit mining.cat.com. b
