    The worlds first auc-tions took place during the Roman Empire as a way to sell winnings after military overthrows and to arrange marriages for women. Since then, auctions have evolved drastically, includ-ing those for used heavy equipment. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, farms and farming equipment were often sold at foreclosure auctions. Throughout the 1900s, older, used equipment was pushed through the auc-tion market as manufactur-ers created newer, better models. Physical equip-ment auctions, as we know them today, gained popu-larity in the 1970s.

    In 2008, auctions were roughly a $268 billion in-dustry and the National Auctioneers Association named equipment auctions as one of the industrys fast-est growing sectors. Equip-

    ment auctions are thriving in part due to the flexibil-ity and accessibility of the Internet. With 2.4 billion Internet users worldwide, many people now shop for a seemingly endless selec-tion of goods and services online, including cranes, wheel loaders and dozers, from the comfort of their homes, offices or even on the go using a smartphone or tablet device.

    And its not just young people who are fans of the World Wide Web. Accord-ing to a 2013 survey by the Pew Research Center, 92 percent of Americans 30 to 49 years old are Internet users. Eighty-three percent of 50 to 64 year old adults use the Internet and 56 per-cent of senior citizens (65 years and older) use the In-ternet. The Internet is also widely used across Can-ada. The Canadian Inter-net Registration Authority

    (CIRA) reports that nearly eight in 10 Canadians are online and the vast major-ity are daily users. Canadi-ans also spend more time online than anybody else in the world with an aver-age of 45 hours per person per month. This is almost double the global average.

    Thus, its no surprise that tech-savvy equipment buyers and sellers of all ages around the world are gravitating towards online equipment auctions. Dis-tance and language barri-ers no longer stand in the way of finding or selling used equipment. Those who are not as comfort-able using the Internet, or are still on the fence about participating in online auc-tions, should consider the following benefits: Online auctions enable

    buyers from around the world to bid on items, which in turn allows sell-ers to generate more in-terest in their equipment rather than relying on limited local participa-tion at physical auctions;

    Buyers can use more capital for bidding, rath-er than reserving some of it to travel to a physical

    As widespread use of the Internet continues to spread, online heavy equipment auctions will become the preferred model for buying and selling used equipment.

    auction; Buyers and sellers save

    time because travel is not required and buyers can choose to bid based on auction schedules that better fit their needs;

    Online auctions are ac-cessible from multiple technology platforms, including computers, phones and tablets;

    Customer service repre-sentatives are available to help sellers list equip-ment and ensure buyers know when an auction will offer the equipment they wish to own;

    Sellers enjoy faster time to cash and higher net proceeds because online auctions occur more fre-quently than physical auctions and the equip-

    ment doesnt have to be moved to one location for bidding;

    Online auctions are easy to navigate because buy-ers can search for equip-ment based on sector, type, auction date and more. Some may believe view-

    ing equipment online cant compare to physically look-ing at the equipment. But at physical auctions, buyers may not have the opportu-nity to inspect and operate equipment or review im-portant analyses such as fluid results. Additionally, the information provided during the sale may not be entirely accurate. Reliable online auctions provide detailed descriptions and images of equipment for buyers so they know what

    theyre purchasing ahead of time. Buyers should en-sure the auction site guar-antees the reports to certify they provide a clear and correct representation of the equipment for sale and that the auctioneer will make right on misrepresen-tations.

    As widespread use of the Internet continues to spread, online heavy equipment auctions will become the preferred mod-el for buying and selling used equipment. Similar to the way Amazon and eBay are overtaking physical big box retailers, online heavy equipment auctions will continue to put pressure on the physical auction events as more people look to buy and sell equipment conve-niently and efficiently. b

    The 35-metric-ton Doo-san DX300LL-3 log loader features a fully guarded, heavy-duty undercarriage and upper structure de-signed specifically for for-estry applications.

    The DX300LL is equipped with a high-walk-er car body with an overall width of 11 feet 10 inches and ground clearance of 31 inches. Tracks feature heavy-duty links with 28-inch double grouser shoes and full-length track guid-ing guards. Heavy-duty top rollers come with special clean-out brackets in place of standard carrier rollers, and final drive motors are protected by guarding.

    The upper structure of-fers heavy-duty mainframe

    reinforcement, full under-house plate guarding, inte-gral heavy-duty catwalks, armoured side doors with guarding over the hydrau-lic pump and cooling sys-tem doors, and heavy-duty undercarriage guarding. The cab features a 4-foot riser with hydraulic tilt for transport.

    The DX300LL has an operating weight of 80,910 pounds with a factory-installed log-loading front with live heel. Maximum loading reach is 38 feet 3 inches and the lift capac-ity at ground level over the front at 20 feet is 28,540 pounds. Lift capacity at ground level over the side (or 360 degrees) at 20 feet is 22,200 pounds.

    Powered by a 6-cylinder Doosan diesel engine with 213 gross horsepower, the DX300LL features a high-pressure common-rail di-rect fuel injection system teamed up with the EPOS (Electronic Power Optimiz-ing System) for optimum power and fuel efficiency. The EPOS also provides four work modes, auto-idle and machine diagnostic capabilities. Operators can work more effectively with multiple power modes, easy-to-read display moni-tors and precise control levers.

    Interim Tier 4 emis-sion regulations are met using a three-fold ap-proach that includes Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (CEGR), along with a Diesel Oxi-dation Catalyst (DOC) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This engine optimization delivers in-creased horsepower and torque to the log loader.

    Long maintenance in-tervals and easy access to service points increase ma-chine uptime and produc-tivity. Examples include centralized grease inlets, wide side access doors for cleaning radiators and coolers, boom pivot bush-ings with greasing intervals of 250 hours, bucket pins with greasing intervals of 50 hours and a large-capac-ity engine air precleaner

    that removes more than 99 percent of airborne par-ticles and extends filter car-tridge service life.

    The larger, world-class cabin combines superior comfort, excellent visibil-ity, low noise levels and a roomy environment. The reclining, height- and weight-adjustable standard heated air suspension seat has a headrest and adjust-able armrest, along with

    easier-to-use controls. A larger door opening pro-vides easier entry and exit and the high-performance air conditioner offers ad-justable airflow and five operating modes.

    Easy-to-operate joystick controls facilitate precise machine movements. In addition, the sound-sup-pressed cab keeps machine noise as low as possible to reduce operator fatigue. b

    Minetec, a divi-sion of Codan Limited (ASX:CDA), has intro-duced ELF II (Ethernet-over-Leaky Feeder), a software-defined commu-nications infrastructure providing high speed data throughput and capacity for underground mining communications man-agement and operations. Data throughput has been increased from 20 to more than 60 megabytes per second in ELF II surpass-ing conventional systems by more than three times the speed.

    The increased data throughput in ELF II has been introduced to ad-dress the needs of com-plex mining operations to support high data rate ap-plications from the work-ing face to the rest of the mine, including but not limited to video, SCADA,

    telemetry and mine man-agement applications, said Andy Sheppard, Executive General Man-ager, Minetec. The ELF II infrastructure has been operating successfully in commissioned systems and is now available to the broader mining com-munity.

    A number of mines worldwide have commis-sioned ELF II in South America, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Australia. All new Mine-tec customers will receive the ELF II infrastructure moving forward, and ex-isting Minetec customers can upgrade to the new software-defined architec-ture, added Sheppard.

    The Minetec ELF II (Ethernet over leaky feed-er) supports full voice, Ethernet and IP-based connectivity over pre-

    viously installed leaky feeder-based, voice com-munication systems. ELF II is able to provide seam-less upgrade over these systems through swap & drop, Power-on-Equip-ment (POE) and advanced diagnostics capabilities. ELF II can also interface to fiber-optic and RF-based technologies through its Access Point (AP) capa-bilities. In addition to in-tegration with third-party technologies, ELF II cou-pled with powerful mining applications developed by Minetec are rapidly be-coming a standard in min-ing operation including SMARTS, SafeDetect and the Trax+Tags II track-ing system. Together, these Minetec solutions provide a comprehensive, enterprise-wide solution for underground mining operations.

    Modifying an off-the-shelf control knob used in avionic systems stopped repeated service calls for a major maker of commercial combi-nation heating and air conditioning rooftop units. Electronic Hard-ware Corporation (EHC) was able to change its standard PT70 control knob to fit on a small circuit board inside the different HVAC models.

    While the conversion project took nearly a year, other alternatives were not possible. Ac-cording to Steve Sgam-mato, president of EHC, There was not much else they could have used unless they had their engineers come up with their own design, and go through months and years of testing. Our PT70 handles mili-tary and aerospace con-ditions. It was tested and proven in the field, so it was by far the logi-cal choice. This was just another example of being able to take a reliable product that is generally used in one application, modify it and use it to solve a problem, and also be very cost effective.

    The issue was with the rooftop HVAC units temperature setting, he explained. The techni-cian would set it to the temperature the cus-tomer wanted, close up the unit and leave. But the fact that the unit vibrated so much over time, the knob that the switch was attached to would actually start to turn, and the tempera-ture setting that was set to be at 75 degrees would now be at 70 just a few weeks later. The tech would have to go back again and again.

    The repeat service calls were costing the manufacturer mon-ey and wasting labor time. The companys engineering staff came to EHC because of the companys wide-range of knobs from simple to complex, with some meeting mil-specs.

    What they were looking to do was find an anti-vibration solu-tion to the problem be-cause they didnt want to keep sending their techs back every month to reset the tempera-ture. We went through a few options. We have about a half dozen of anti-vibration, mechani-cal knobs in our inven-tory. After trying all of them, they selected a push-to-turn.

    The EHC PT70 lock-ing knob will engage only when an operator pushes the knob in and then actually turns the switch below it. Oth-

    erwise, its locked in the position it has been set at. It takes a lot to override it, Sgammato stated, so thats the one they went for.

    It wasnt, however, just a simple matter of replacing the existing switch with the new PT70 knob. The ma-jor issue was where the knob goes, explained Mike Zwilling, Engi-neering/Quality Con-trol Supervisor for EHC. Its on a small square circuit board and its got a switch with a shaft sticking straight up out of the middle of it. The problem is that the shaft itself was too long so that when you put our push to turn knob on it, theres a nut that has to engage the whole mech-anism, and the fact that the shaft was so long, it wasnt engaging. So we had to build up un-derneath and we added a split washer, a lock washer to bring the nut to where the knob meets. So we had to modify the accessories that go with the stan-dard knob to make it fit. Circuit board is 2 x 2 inches. Knob is not even 3/4 diameter by less than one inch tall. Because of the modi-fications were able to make, technicians were immediately able to ret-rofit the part without any training.

    The initial order num-bered in the tens of thou-sands, which EHC was able to meet with even the required fast turn-around due to EHCs net-work of manufacturing facilities.

    Perseverance and cre-ativity enabled a 75-year old General Motors manu-facturing facility to go land-fill-free. The journey took four years and included seven attempts to recycle a challenging oily filter sludge generated from a

    machining operation.The plant, which pro-

    duces components to en-able better vehicle fuel effi-ciency, and its nearly 1,100 employees now reuse, re-cycle or convert to energy all waste from daily opera-tions. With their achieve-

    ment, GMs landfill-free fa-cility count is at 109, more than any automaker.

    A plant pursuing landfill-free will review data, do dumpster dives to find the most landfilled items, and then tackle each waste stream to find bet-

    ter alternatives, said John Bradburn, GM Manager of Waste Reduction Efforts. It gets harder as you go and takes an entire plants commitment and some-times outside partners to get the job done.

    GM supplier Mobile Fluid Recovery helped the 1.8-million-square-foot fa-cility solve its final road-block to achieve landfill-free status: separating a mucky mixture of metal, filter paper and oil pro-duced by a machine that cuts metal for fuel injec-tor and manifold compo-nents.

    The machine uses oil for lubrication from a cen-tral pit. Once complete, oil flows back to a section of the pit, carrying with it small pieces of metal shav-ings. Filters clean out the residue and metal chips, while clean oil flows back to the main pit to start the process again.

    The solution was to centrifuge the remaining material spinning it like a high-speed industrial washing machine. The ve-locity makes excess oil pass through a filter into a hose. The oil is filtered further to remove air and water, tested, and dumped back

    into the pit for reuse. The remaining dried filter paper and fine metal particles are converted into energy.

    Employee participa-tion and enthusiasm were instrumental in recycling other waste streams such as paper, plastic and card-board.

    The key to lasting behavioural change is putting employees at the center of the challenge, said Gail Finkelstein, En-vironmental Engineer at GMs Rochester Opera-tions plant. We commu-nicated regularly on our progress; reaching land-fill-free wouldnt be pos-sible without them.

    Earlier in the plants landfill-free journey, the team relocated dumpster and recycling containers to better enable convenient collection, and designed clearer labels for easier sorting. The goal was to make recycling easy with

    simple instructions.To increase cardboard

    recycling, signage commu-nicated the fact that GM receives 2 cents per pound if recycled versus paying 3 cents per pound to send it to a landfill. Employees read which local recycling center receives the mate-rial and what its next life becomes more cardboard and liners after process-ing. In just a year, the plant recycled 115 tons of card-board, more than twice as much collected the prior year, avoiding use of 950 cubic yards of landfill space. The plant executed similar communications for scrap paper and elec-tronics.

    GM recycles and reuses more waste from its man-ufacturing facilities than any other automaker. For more information on GMs environmental commit-ment, visit www.gm.com/environment. b

    You probably know that recycling a plastic bever-age bottle recaptures its value and keeps it out of the local landfill. You may also know that the bottle can live a second life in a container, carpeting, play-ground equipment, au-tomobile parts, sleeping bags, shoes, luggage, other plastic containers and even clothing.

    But have you ever won-dered exactly how the plas-tic bottle that you toss in the recycling bin becomes a new T-shirt or rug?

    The transformation from beverage bottle to new product begins at a recycling facility that re-ceives large bales of used plastic bottles. The bottles are compressed into bales to reduce transportation costs and energy. These bottles already have been pre-sorted, so each bale should contain only one type of plastic: polyethyl-ene teraphthalate (PET), the type of plastic most

    commonly used to make pop, water, juice, sport drinks and other beverage bottles.

    At the recycling facili-ty, the bales are torn apart by a machine called a bale breaker. The separated bottles then are run un-der a magnet that attracts any metal pieces that may have mistakenly come along for the ride. After that, the bottles are run through a washing ma-chine that works just like the home version only its many times larger, of course. The soapy water removes the labels from the bottles as well as dirt and debris.

    The next step: separat-ing the bottles from the bottle caps that typically are made of polypropylene and can be recycled sepa-rately. But if youre imag-ining hundreds of work-ers endlessly unscrewing caps from bottles, dont worrytheres a much more efficient method.

    First, the bottles and caps are ground into small flakes that are placed in a large tank of water. Since PET and polypropylene have different densities, the bottle flakes sink in water while the cap flakes float. This makes it pos-sible to separate the two plastics for recycling.

    After the PET flakes head through another wash cycle to remove any leftover dirt, they pass through an extruder. This machine heats up the flakes until they combine and become gooey and then pushes the plastic through screens to cre-ate long, tubular strands of plastic, kind of like that soft clay spaghetti press you used as a kid. The strands are cooled and hardened in water, chopped into pellets and then shipped to com-panies that make a variety of plastic products, in-cluding new bottles.

    If the recycled PET

    is going to be made into fabric, the pellets will be melted down and pushed through an extruder once again but this time the strands will be stretched into a very fine, soft thread (fibre). This thread then can be woven into versatile fabrics that youd never guess were made from recycled plas-tic bottles.

    The Government of Yu-kon has formally directed the Yukon Development Corporation (YDC) to con-duct the research and plan-ning for hydroelectric en-ergy generation in Yukon.

    A substantial increase in Yukons power supply will be necessary over time to foster responsible and sustainable economic de-velopment in the territory, Minister responsible for Yukon Development Cor-poration Scott Kent said. Hydroelectric power will meet this demand and en-sure Yukons power supply is from a clean, affordable source.

    Under subsection 6(1) of the Yukon Development Corporation Act, YDC has

    The demand for recy-cled plastics continues to grow, which makes collect-ing these bottles more and more important. And peo-ple have responded 95 per cent of Canadians can recycle their plastic bottles and recycle 150 million kilograms of plastic each year from bottles alone! You can do your part: re-place bottle caps after use,

    been directed to plan one or more hydroelectric proj-ects that will meet the ex-

    recycle at home, hang on to empty bottles until theres a recycling bin handy, and encourage your friends to do the same.

    The governments of Can-ada and British Columbia (B.C.) have renewed their water quantity monitoring agreement, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minis-ter of the Canadian North-ern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council and B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak announced recently on World/B.C. Rivers Day. The Memorandum of Agree-ment for Water Quantity Surveys ensures the ongoing collection, processing, pub-lication and distribution of water quantity data in B.C.

    Almost every sector of Canadas economy needs accurate information about water supply for economic and social development and to ensure environ-mental sustainability, said Minister Aglukkaq. Re-newing this agreement re-

    inforces our joint commit-ment to understanding and managing water availabil-ity in British Columbia.

    It was essential that this agreement be renewed because British Columbi-ans rely on the data col-lected for their safety and wellbeing, said Minister Polak. Water quantity sur-veys and streamflow data play a pivotal role in flood forecasting efforts across the province, and are also crucial for determining drought levels and water supply conditions.

    The B.C. network of approximately 450 water quantity monitoring sta-tions has been co managed by Environment Canada and B.C.s Ministry of En-vironment since 1975. The agreement provides for shared operating costs of approximately $7 million each year. Approximately

    one-third is covered by En-vironment Canada, while B.C.s Ministry of Environ-ment covers two-thirds and recovers half this amount from third-party clients such as BC Hydro, First Nations, industry, local governments and agencies.

    Similar partnerships exist between the Govern-ment of Canada and all of the provinces and ter-ritories. Collectively, these bilateral agreements estab-lish the framework for the national network of more than 2,500 water quantity monitoring stations. These stations provide valuable information that helps to protect and conserve Can-adas water supplies.

    The agreement recog-nizes B.C.s responsibility for water in the province. It provides the structure and flexibility to ensure that B.C. has access to an ef-fective and efficient water quantity monitoring net-work that supports public health and safety, econom-ic development and the sustainability of the natural environment. b

    A world leader in Mo-bile Elevating Work Plat-form (MEWP) design, Skyjack is currently the only manufacturer to offer two options in secondary

    guarding. Skyjack is the first

    manufacturer to release two distinct options in secondary guarding (addi-tional protective measures

    taken following a job-spe-cific risk assessment, to reduce the potential for sustained inadvertent op-eration in the event of col-lision with an external ob-ject). By simultaneously introducing the SG-M and SG-E secondary guarding mechanisms. This allows the equipment user to se-lect, following a job spe-cific risk assessment, the

    most appropriate solution for any particular need.

    Industry groups have recently suggested the pos-sibility of certain circum-stances, conditions and op-erations that might result in inadvertent contact with obstructions and a conse-quent unintended opera-tion of the controls. A form of secondary guarding is, therefore, now specified by some equipment users.

    We understand that there is no one size fits all solution when it comes to such precau-tions, said David Hall, Skyjack Product Manager Europe. Our telescopic and articulating booms are designed with a range of safety features, in ac-cordance with regulatory requirements. However, we recognize that this new measure, although not mandatory, has a role to play. The UK govern-ments Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has wel-comed secondary guard-ing but has also noted that no one system is appropri-ate for all job functions. We agree, and by offer-ing a choice of options it broadens the appeal of secondary guarding to a wider range of custom-

    ers, who may consider it a worthwhile investment.

    Skyjack has always worked closely with its customers when develop-ing new products and sys-tems. Its SG-M and SG-E systems have been driven by market demand and the company worked particu-larly closely with one of the UKs largest equipment providers (and a major Skyjack customer) Select Plant Hire.

    The Skyjack SG-M sys-tem features a low-weight protective steel structure that is designed to reduce the possibility of the op-erator being held against the controls in the event of unintended contact with an obstruction.

    The Skyjack SG-E sys-tem features a sensor bar that, when pushed, instantly stops all func-tions and initiates an audible siren and high intensity flashing bea-con. If the bar is released within one second, the siren and beacon will cease, and the selected function will return. If pressure is applied for more than one second, the siren and beacon will continue to activate and the engine will stop,

    halting all functions un-til reset. The applicable emergency controls can still be operated to bring the platform down to ground safely. If the sys-tem is accidentally acti-vated by the operator, it can be easily reset using the illuminated push but-ton on the control box.

    Both the SG-E and SG-M can be fitted on new Sky-jack booms or retrofitted to models manufactured in 2006 and after. They can be factory fitted or alter-natively supplied as a kit. Once fitted, neither system impairs operator visibility, mobility on the platform or access to the work area. Both require minimum maintenance.

    To create two products which meet all the customer demands, it was important to have feedback from a ma-jor user, Select Plant Hire, a company with almost 30 years of experience supply-ing construction equipment. By having Select as a partner, Skyjack gained extensive in-sight into market needs and also a ready-made arena in which to do extensive field testing. This ensured the customer remained the focal point throughout the testing process. b
