INTERIORLOGGING

ASSOCIATION

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) says offi-cials from Transport Min-ister Marc Garneau’s of-fice have confirmed media reports suggesting the new federal government is mov-ing forward to replace cur-rent requirements for truck drivers to complete paper log books with a mandate that trucks be equipped with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) as the standard mechanism for monitoring, auditing and enforcing compliance with national hours of service regulations.

In addition, it was con-firmed that a new manu-facturing standard will be introduced to require that all new heavy trucks sold in Canada be equipped with an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system.

CTA, which is a federa-tion of the provincial truck-ing associations which rep-resents over 4,500 trucking companies nationally, wel-comes confirmation of both initiatives.

“We have been advo-cating for both of these key safety measures for over a decade now,” says CTA president, David Bradley. “We know that Transport Canada has been working on both issues but with a new government in charge we needed to confirm the commitment is moving for-ward at the political level. I am satisfied that commit-ment is in place.”

ELDs are devices used to track, collect and record data on a truck driver’s hours of service. The fed-eral hours of service regu-lation, which is designed to combat driver fatigue, is arguably the most impor-tant element of the Nation-al Safety Code for Trucks. ESC systems help protect against truck rollovers and other loss of control inci-dents by automatically en-gaging the engine retarder and applying a truck’s brakes even before the driver is aware of the need for increased stability.

According to CTA, the

benefits in terms of safety and administration of both measures outweigh the costs for both the trucking industry and for govern-ment.

While Transport Canada cannot give a firm date for introduction of the regula-tions at this time, it is ex-pected to align implemen-tation as closely as possible to the timetable for similar measures in the U.S.– late 2017 or early 2018.

Now that it has the commitment of the fed-eral government, the industry is calling upon the provinces to imple-ment an identical ELD mandate for those truck-ing operations that come under provincial juris-diction, says Bradley. Under the Canadian constitution the federal government has jurisdic-tion over extra-provin-cial trucking operations (i.e., those that cross provincial and/or inter-national borders) while the provincial govern-ments are responsible for intra-provincial trucking operations (those that operate solely within a province). b

Several years in the making and designed with direct customer feedback, John Deere is introduc-ing four Final Tier 4 G-Series skid steers (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 318G) and one compact track loader (317G). These new ma-chines were designed to level the playing field for today’s rental, ag mate-rial handling, construction and landscape customers. The five models, including three vertical and two radi-al-lift options, boast big re-liability and serviceability, and are full of customer-requested features aimed at improving operator and machine productivity, and uptime, and lowering daily operating costs.

“With the addition of these new G-Series mod-els, John Deere now offers a full line of skid steers and compact track loaders to meet the quality, per-formance and price point needs of today’s custom-er,” said Gregg Zupancic,

product marketing man-ager, John Deere Construc-tion & Forestry. “Customer input led to increased dura-bility, higher engine power, improved fuel capacity and updated cab and productiv-ity features, so when cus-tomers buy or rent a John Deere G-Series machine, it isn’t just an easy decision, it’s one they can make with total confidence.”

The G-Series machines feature an improvement in horsepower-to-weight ratios and an optimized boom design that enables lift heights over 10 feet on the vertical lift models and a 20 percent increase in breakout forces on the radial-lift models. With the option of a radial or verti-cal lift, customers can now choose the Deere system that best fits their applica-tion needs.

The new vertical-lift de-sign on the 314G (51 hp), 318G (65 hp) and 317G (65 hp) provides excellent all-around visibility with clear

sight lines both above and be-low the boom to enable easier grading in tight spaces, plus the low-profile rear-hood de-sign expands rear views.

The radial-lift option used on the 312GR (51 hp) and 316GR (61 hp) offers an exclusive one-person boom lockout system for safety that can be activated from within the cab. The lift system is designed for lower maintenance and op-timal digging performance, and is ideal when more reach is needed at mid-range lift heights — such as dumping over a foundation wall, backfilling or load-ing a flatbed trailer. These machines are also ideal for work in small areas or in-door operations.

The 316GR, 318G and 317G offer 24 percent more engine power and all G-Series machines provide 11 percent additional fuel ca-pacity over previous mod-els for daylong productiv-ity and uptime. A durable, high-performance Yanmar

Final Tier 4 engine and hy-draulic powertrain provide maximum pushing power, and boom and bucket pro-ductivity. The optimized power-to-weight ratio also helps deliver more usable power, resulting in faster cycle times on the job site.

John Deere designed an all-new operator station for the G-Series, featuring many of the same comfort, space and visibility refine-ments originally introduced on the E-Series machines.

A swing-out cab door cre-ates a wide-open entryway and flat floors allow easier entry and exit, along with more foot and legroom. The cabs and floors are sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and excess noise, and a footwell clean-out makes debris manage-ment easier than ever, min-imizing costly maintenance and downtime.

The new skid steer econ-omy models 312GR (radial lift) and 314G (vertical lift)

were purpose built for sim-plicity, reliability and du-rability, and include a key set of standard features for the entry-level customer. The higher performance 316GR and 318G models offer several customer-driven features, including 2-speed, air-conditioning, electrohydraulic (EH) joy-stick controls, an enhanced lighting package and a new self-level and ride control combination that features

shock-absorbing boom cyl-inders that cushion bumps, helping retain full bucket loads while navigating over rough terrain.

Flexible control choices on the 316GR and 318G al-low contractors to choose between standard foot and hand controls, optional hands-only controls or en-hanced (EH) joystick con-trols that are switchable be-tween ISO- and H-patterns.

All G-Series models are compatible with more than 100 available Worksite Pro™ attachments for opti-mal job site performance. 312GR Skid Steer Loader• 51 hp; 1,550 lb rated op-

erating capacity• The smallest, most

compact radial-lift skid steer, this model is per-fect when more reach is

needed at mid-range lift heights.

• Unmatched visibility and a tight turning radius make this machine ideal for work in small areas or indoor operations.

• Tire options are available to allow for a narrow machine width of less than 5 feet.

314G Skid Steer Loader• 51 hp; 1,760 lb rated op-

erating capacity• The smallest vertical-lift

skid steer• Perfect for loading trucks

or mixers where more reach and lift height are needed at the top of the lift path

316GR Skid Steer Loader• 65 hp; 1,750 lb rated op-

path skid steer• Ideal for heavy-duty dig-

ging, grading, backfilling or placing materials

318G Skid Steer Loader• 65 hp; 1,945 lb rated op-

erating capacity• Vertical-lift design maxi-

mizes lift heights and all-around visibility.

• Clear sight lines both above and below the boom enable easier grad-ing in tight spaces or next to buildings.

317G Compact Track Loader • 65 hp; 2,125 lb rated op-

erating capacity• Simple track tensioning,

easy access to greasing locations, swing-out hy-draulic oil coolers and large access points for debris removal minimize downtime and costly maintenance. b

Peterbilt’s first light-weight, fuel efficient PAC-CAR MX-11 engine was installed recently in the company’s newest voca-tional truck, the Model 567 in a set-forward front axle configuration. The historic truck-and-engine combina-tion was presented to Knife River, who drove it off the assembly line at Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas manufactur-ing facility.

“The PACCAR MX-11 will bring new levels of performance, durability, re-liability and overall return for customers. It is light-weight and fuel efficient, making it an ideal power choice for customers in a wide range of applications, including regional haul, tanker, bulk haul, con-struction and refuse,” said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Assistant General Manager of Sales and Marketing. “We’re pleased to present Peterbilt’s first production PACCAR MX-11 engine to a valued customer such as Knife River.”

The truck will be used in Knife River’s mixer op-erations throughout the Northwest U.S.

“It was a great experi-ence to tour Peterbilt’s plant. It was obvious em-ployees took pride in the product they were build-ing, and watching the state-of-the-art assembly processes and attention to quality gave us an even

greater appreciation for Peterbilt,” said Scott Ham-mond, Knife River’s North-west Region Equipment Manager. “We’re anxious to put the MX-11 and Mod-el 567 to work.”

Joining Hammond at the presentation were Ran-dy Kephart, Knife River’s Equipment Manager at its Coos Bay (Ore.) and Rose-burg (Ore.) locations, and Colin Milligan, Shop Man-ager.

Knife River was found-ed in 1917 and is based in Bismarck, N.D. They are a full-service civil and resi-dential contractor operat-ing in 19 states. In addition to its contracting services, Knife River is one of the U.S.’s largest aggregate producers and supplies high-quality asphalt, ready-mix concrete and other construction materials.

The Model 567 SFFA they were presented to-day is one of 200 Peterbilt trucks the company has ordered.

The 10.8-liter PACCAR MX-11 engine became available for order through Peterbilt dealerships in November and production began this week. It has an output of up to 430 horse-power and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque.

The PACCAR MX-11 engine has six inline cyl-inders and a double over-head camshaft design. PACCAR MX engines are

the only commercial diesel engines to use Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in both the engine block and cylin-der head. CGI is approxi-mately 20 percent lighter and 75 percent stronger than traditional gray iron. The PACCAR MX-11 en-gine is designed to achieve an industry-leading B10 life of one million miles. It also utilizes a common rail fuel system with injec-tion pressures of 2,500 bar to optimize combustion for low fuel consumption and noise levels.

Peterbilt’s Model 567 SFFA lets customers maxi-mize payloads while help-ing meet state and federal bridge law requirements with a chassis that opti-mizes weight distribution. It is the industry’s new-est heavy-duty vocational truck and features modern, distinctive styling.

“A main reason we se-lected the Peterbilt Model 567 SFFA is it’s the new-est, most up-to-date set-for-ward front axle available,” said Hammond. “It has the advanced features to en-hance our operations and I’m sure it will be a favorite with our drivers.”

It is available in both 115- and 121-inch BBC lengths. The 115-inch BBC has a bumper to front axle distance of 29 inches and the 121-inch BBC has a bumper to front axle dis-tance of 31 inches. Peterbilt also offers the Model 567 in a set-back front axle con-figuration, also available in a 115- or 121-inch BBC length. b

The leading heavy-duty truck manufacturer honoured six cities in 2015; Freightliner Trucks launched the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities recognition program to honour cities spearhead-ing community growth and innovation. The program came after an economic data review revealed a compelling relationship be-tween severe duty trucks and its operators, and thriving economies.

After a successful first year for the program, Freightliner has announced the program will continue with more cities being hon-oured in 2016. The list of new cities, along with a recap of the 2015 program, was shared at the World of Concrete tradeshow in Las Vegas during a reception in Freightliner’s booth.

“It might seem a little unexpected for a truck manufacturer to create a recognition program like Hardest Working Cities, but it’s clear that vibrant,

local economies need se-vere duty trucks for essen-tial jobs such as building highways, delivering con-struction materials, plow-ing snow or hauling refuse. Hard work matters and it should be celebrated,” said Allan Haggai, marketing communications manager, Freightliner Trucks. “We think it’s important to ac-knowledge cities and work-ers using products like ours to positively impact their communities.”

Since the launch of the program, six cities have been awarded the Hardest Working Cities title: In-dianapolis, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Los Angeles, To-ronto, and Dallas. As part of the recognition, Freight-liner Trucks hosted an award presentation where elected officials and busi-ness leaders accepted the award in each winning city

Additionally, Freightlin-er identified city work sites and coordinated surprise gift and food deliveries to thank workers for their

contributions. Work sites included major road con-struction projects, public works garages, refuse fa-cilities and more. To date, Freightliner Trucks has visited 12 work sites and thanked about 800 workers across six cities.

“This is not only a great occasion for the Freightliner Trucks family to celebrate what our company stands for, but a chance to honour those who work hard while building strong communi-ties,” said Mary Aufdem-berg, director of product marketing, Freightliner Trucks. “Whether you are operating a truck, maintain-ing it, or building it, our in-dustry is an amazing place to develop a career.”

To find the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities, approximately 400 metropolitan census areas in the United States and Canada in 11 different data categories were reviewed. The data categories ranged from impact on overall gross domestic product to growth in employment to the number of jobs in key industry sectors including construction, manufactur-ing and logistics. b

The AED Summit is an annual convention for equipment distributors, organised by Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) to promote dialogue within the industry. This year’s event took place at the Gaylord National Re-sort & Convention Centre in Washington. Attendees included former US presi-dent, George W. Bush, talking about his experi-ences as the country’s 43rd president.

A key Group of Terex Trucks representative at-tended the summit, led by Paul Douglas, Director and General Manager, Sam Wy-ant, Global Sales and Mar-keting Director, and Matt

Deloglos, Head of the Ter-ex Trucks North American regional sales. They were backed by a full comple-ment of North American regional sales managers and service managers.

Over the course of three days, the Terex Trucks team held individual meet-ings with 20 different deal-er decision-makers. They were able to offer an up-date of Terex Trucks’ future plans in the North Ameri-can market and underline the company’s rock-solid commitment to invest-ment in its dealer network, people, new products and aftersales.

Above all, the meetings were an invaluable oppor-tunity to discuss how Terex Trucks can best support its dealers and their customers in 2016.

“The feedback we re-ceived from our North American dealers during the back-to-back meetings at the AED summit was very encouraging,” said Paul Douglas, Director and

General Manager. “It was clear our dealers recognise and appreciate the business improvements we have put in place and trust us to do all we can to help them de-velop their sales and fully support their customers.”

“Most dealers generally reported a strong 2015 and see an equally positive out-look ahead for 2016. There is clearly business to be had in the North American market and a demonstrable appetite for Terex Trucks’ products, with their unique offering of excellent quality coupled with low cost of ownership.

“We are investing in our dealer network and are serious about building relationships, trust and in-creasing the Terex Trucks brand in the America,” Mr Douglas continued. “This investment underlines our dedication and commit-ment to the long haul.”

AED is an international trade association represent-ing companies involved in the distribution, rental and support of equipment used in construction, mining, forestry, power generation, agriculture and industrial applications. b

Case IH is pleased to announce the opportunity to experience the benefits of AFS Connect advanced farm management sys-tem free of charge. Now through the AFS Connect program, customers who purchase a new Axial-Flow combine, Steiger tractor or Magnum tractor by April 30, 2016, at participating Case IH dealerships will be eligible for a free one-year subscription to AFS Con-nect, including hardware installation.

“As producers take to the field this spring, we’re excited to give them the opportunity to try free AFS Connect,” said Leo Bose, Case IH Advanced Farm-ing Systems (AFS) man-ager. “AFS Connect gives

operators instant access to real-time data, helping them manage their entire fleet from a remote loca-tion. With instant access to location, diagnostics, fuel and engine stats, they’ll be armed with valuable deci-sion-making tools to help increase efficiency and turn potential into profit.”

Producers who partici-pate in the free AFS Con-nect program also can add one of these new features to their subscription:• Cellular Guidance

(NTRIP): Tapping into CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile) networks, pro-ducers gain access to 180 carriers across North America. This industry-

leading coverage ensures a more reliable guidance signal and sub-inch ac-curacy for the most pre-cise farming practices.

• Two-way file transfer: Producers can easily transport AFS data such as yield maps, prescrip-tions or guidance lines wirelessly to their home office or trusted advisor. AFS Connect offers a

comprehensive suite of fleet management and machine monitoring that provide long-distance, real-time control. From yield mapping to machine per-formance data and custom alerts, AFS Connect gives producers on-the-go access to every machine in their fleet.

The free AFS Connect program is eligible with other programs. For com-plete program details, visit your Case IH AFS dealer orcaseih.com/freeAFS. b

Case IH Announces Free AFS Connect Farm Management System

The Canadian Trucking Alliance today released a whitepaper recommend-ing a Made-in-Canada, SMART approach toward implementing the proposed Phase II GHG Reduction Standards and fuel efficien-cy regulations for heavy trucks and – for the first time – trailers.

The Phase I standards which were introduced in 2013 covered tractors and engines from model years 2014 to 2018. Phase II, will encompass the entire ve-hicle – tractor, engine and trailer.

CTA contends the Ca-nadian trucking industry is known worldwide as a leader in fuel economy/GHG reduction.

“At no time in our in-dustry’s history have car-riers’ economic goals been more aligned with society’s desires in terms of carbon emissions reduction than they are today,” says CTA president David Bradley. “Even with current lower prices, fuel is the second largest operating cost for truck fleets so it is in the in-dustry’s interest to improve fuel economy while also further reducing its carbon footprint.”

But while CTA is onside with the aims of the Phase II regulation, it states that

Environment Canada this time around cannot – as it has done in the past and which it has indicated it is planning to do again — simply adopt whatever the US Environmental Protec-tion Agency decides to in-troduce to the US fleet.

In the whitepaper, CTA argues the US fleet is stan-dardized around one con-figuration whereas in Can-ada a vast array of much more productive, efficient and innovative multi-axle configurations, trailer body styles, and higher allow-able weights are allowed. When payload is consid-ered, the Canadian fleet is 22 per cent more fuel effi-cient and produces 22 per cent less GHGs than the US fleet. In addition, Canadian operating conditions – the climate, topography, dis-tances – are very different than in most parts of the United States and require equipment and technolo-gies that have been tested and certified for use in this country.

The EPA considered none of this in developing its proposed Phase II rules which were introduced last year. To date, the only of-ficial word from Environ-ment Canada is that it in-tends to follow the US lead once again. According to

the Canada Gazette Part 1 Notice, the department’s approach will be “Con-sistent with the approach taken with current regula-tions for GHG emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and engines.”

“Simply taking the US rule and imposing it on the Canadian fleet would be at odds with the goal of reducing GHG emis-sions from the sector and would undercut Canada’s superior productivity and environmental advantages developed over the past 40 years,” says Bradley. “It would force equipment on Canadian carriers that is potentially either unsuit-able or untested for Cana-dian conditions and which could expose Canadian drivers to unsafe situa-tions.” b

Case IH revealed the all-new 2000 Series Early Riser planter to media and attendees at the opening of the National Farm Machin-

ery Show in Louisville.“From all-new cast iron

components to an electri-cally driven low mainte-nance metering system

to the entire toolbar, we redesigned every inch of the new Early Riser plant-er,” explained Tony Mc-Clelland, Case IH planter marketing manager. “It was all based on direct customer feedback and field-testing. We made sure that this new planter is not only extremely ac-curate, it’s also robust enough to deliver pre-cise placement across all terrains, crop types and speeds for faster, more uniform emergence.”

Announced in Novem-ber 2015, the new 2000 series Early Riser planter is the first to factory-in-tegrate industry-leading seed placement technolo-gies from Precision Plant-ing into a completely new system featuring a best-in-class, all-new, rugged row unit.

Designed for modern seed types, treatments, populations and condi-tions, the new planter can be easily customized to a range of soil types, terrain, fertilizer/chemical appli-cation needs and varying crop residue management practices. Plus, a stream-lined design and tool-free crop changes and adjust-ments result in simpler maintenance.Four Levels of Planter Technology for 2016

Case IH also detailed a four-tier planter offering for

a variety of farm operations at the event. This offering features four levels, rang-ing in price, customization and factory-readiness — the highest tier being the new 2000 series.

“The Early Riser planter family set the agronomic standard by providing the industry’s only flat-bottom seed trench, leading to ear-lier, more uniform emer-gence and higher yields,” said McClelland. “Building on this legacy, we’re ex-cited to give producers the opportunity to work with their trusted Case IH deal-ers to customize their exist-ing, new or future planter with the right amount of technology to meet their needs.”

Retaining the agronom-ic value of the Early Riser planter series, each unique offering ensures consistent in-row spacing, accurate depth control, uniform soil density and good seed-to-soil contact.

As the first planter se-ries built with factory-in-tegrated Precision Planting technology, the new 2000 series Early Riser planter allows producers to cus-tomize their planter — di-rect from the factory. Built with heavy-duty cast com-ponents, the 2000 series stands up to high speeds and tough, fast-changing conditions. A 26-inch tool-bar clearance, plus a 60 percent increase in vertical row-unit travel, helps ac-commodate uneven terrain without sacrificing accu-rate seed depth and con-sistent closing — even at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.

Developed specifi-cally for the 2000 series, the all-new vSet 2 meter and vDrive electric drive deliver accurate and con-sistent seed singulation, populations and in-row spacing for a variety of crop types. This new me-tering system, combined with DeltaForce hydraulic down force and row-by-row shut-offs for seed, liq-uid fertilizer and chemi-cal, allows each row unit to react individually to changing conditions for better seed placement. Additional new features that can be customized from the factory include the Advanced Seed Deliv-ery (ASD) system for the most accurate seed deliv-ery and placement from the meter to the furrow.

First models, including 12-, 16- and 24-row 30-inch front-fold machines, will be available for the 2017 planting season.

“Of course, not every-one is in an operation that requires the ultimate in cutting-edge planting tech-nology,” added McClel-land. “But every operation can benefit from some level of technological improve-ment in planting accuracy. That’s why we’ve outlined three other alternatives for 2016.”

Case IH continues to offer an industry-exclu-sive deduct on certain components to producers who order certain 1200 series Early Riser planter models with Precision Planting technology. Built with less mechanical com-ponents, their new planter will arrive at the dealer-

ship ready to accept the technology they desire. This includes the vDrive with vSet electric meter-drive system for optimal seed placement and ac-curacy, in-cab adjust-able CleanSweep residue managers and DeltaForce hydraulic down force for uniform depth across varying soil conditions.

The Advanced Seed Metering (ASM) technol-ogy on the 1200 series Early Riser planter set the industry benchmark for consistent in row spac-ing and plant population accuracy. Proven on op-erations across the coun-try, this system allows producers to plant a wide variety of seed types and sizes at high plant popu-lations. The 1200 series features many other Agro-nomic Design advantages, including the two-stage closing system, furrow firming point, seed pro-tection shoe and exclusive pulled gauge wheels. Case IH dealers are offering ex-ceptional deals on these models.

Through unprecedent-ed discounts and special interest-waiver programs, producers can upgrade to the technology they de-sire on certain used late-model Early Riser planters through participating Case IH dealerships. If producers wish to modify these mod-els with Precision Planting components, their Case IH dealer is uniquely suited to modify existing models to the level that’s best for their farm. b

Site preparation, clear-ing and maintenance tasks are now easier, safer and more productive for op-erators with the new John Deere Extreme Duty Brush Cutter attachment. The Ex-treme Duty Brush Cutter (RS72) is the latest addi-tion to the ever-expanding lineup of Worksite Pro at-tachments and is optimized to work with select John Deere E- and D-Series skid steers, compact track load-ers (CTLs) and most com-petitive models.

The Extreme Duty Brush Cutter boasts many key features that help drive additional produc-tivity from a skid steer or CTL Most notable is an

exclusive, patent-pending retractable forward shield. When using the Extreme Duty Brush Cutter on larg-er trees and brush (bigger than four inches in diam-eter), the shield will move up and away from the tree to expose the entire cutting edge, protecting the opera-tor from flying debris. Oth-er features and capabilities of the RS72 include:• Ability to cut heavy

brush and trees up to seven inches in diameter

• Four double beveled-edge blades and optional stump-grinding teeth for easy stump removal and material cutting

• A unique mower deck that funnels brush and trees to the corners of the mower for maximum blade performance

• A smooth deck without deep pockets, so accu-mulated debris is eas-ily removed or washed away

• A vertical motor that has a heavy-duty spline shaft for increased per-

formance • A standard pressure

gauge indicator that is highly visible to the op-erator, allowing easy monitoring of blade load to prevent overheating and overloading

John Deere Brush Cutter Attachment

“Like all Worksite Pro attachments, the Extreme Duty Brush Cutter will optimize job site perfor-mance and productiv-ity,” said Gregg Zupan-cic, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “We designed this attach-ment with smart features to quickly clear heavy brush and keep the opera-tor safe, so he or she can focus on the task at hand without worry of flying debris.”

With the universal, self-cleaning Quik-Tatch easy attachment system found on all John Deere skid steers and CTLs, the ma-chine can easily add and remove the Extreme Duty Brush Cutter in no time. The new attachment is also backed by John Deere parts, service and warranty coverage. b

With the new 735 of the current E-Series, Sen-nebogen presents the next generation of mobile tim-ber handling machines. The pick & carry machine boasts compact dimensions, a robust design, and optimal consumption values.

As pick & carry ma-chines, the timber han-dling machines from Sennebogen have long impressed numerous cus-tomers around the world. In this regard, the Sen-nebogen 735, which first came onto the market in 2005, has been a tried and trusted success story for many years. The current E-Series seamlessly extends this success with the new generation. Equipped with a diesel engine complying with the Tier 4f emissions standard, a newly designed robust mobile undercar-riage, and particularly low consumption values, the 735 uniformly impresses operators and the persons responsible for machin-ery. As a genuine timber handling machine, the Sen-nebogen 735 is at home in the sawmill and in the log sorting yard. This is where above all the pick & carry concept reveals its strengths. Whether the task at hand is removing

logs along the sorting line or sorting and manipulat-ing the selection for further processing, the machine is ideally equipped for a vari-ety of tasks. Equipped with a powerful 224 kW diesel engine, two-stage all-wheel travel drive, and an 11.3 m equipment length, the 735 is available to end users via the sales partner network effective immediately.

Thanks to compact di-mensions of 3.68 m in width and a rear radius of 2.93 m, the machine can even move safely into nar-row alleys. Thus logs can be conveniently manipu-lated to a height of approxi-mately 10 m. Thanks to the 360° infinitely rotating uppercarriage; the machine can always be moved out forwards again, eliminating the need for complex ma-neuvering. This also makes it significantly easier to un-load trucks.

The new Sennebogen 735 has been specially de-signed for the requirements of mobile timber handling. An articulated boom be-hind the center of the ma-chine ensures ideal weight distribution. In travel oper-ation, the machine’s center of gravity is always central-ly positioned over the slew-ing ring; as a result, the

rear ballast can be signifi-cantly reduced in dimen-sions and weight. The 735 can even be deployed with confidence on demanding terrain, on inclines and on a difficult substrate. The two powerful travel drives with two speed levels ac-celerate the machine up to 20 km/h. With wide twin tires and a supplemental support plate, the machine is stable in every position and can even pull two trail-ers up to 30 t.

Optimized engine con-trol, the proven EcoMode, and well-designed air con-trol ensure consumption values that are quite re-spectable. In direct com-parison with the predeces-sor series, a reduction of up to 25% could be achieved. Initial test implementa-tions under realistic con-ditions confirmed the low consumption, which cur-rently no competitor has achieved. For the operator, the 1.0 m rigidly elevated, comfortable Maxcab offers an ideal overview of the equipment and work area. An extensive lighting pack-age with surrounding cam-eras that offer the operator additional support during work. Equipment features, such as the standard direc-tion of travel reversal and the Sencon control system with intuitive operation, offer the operator comfort-able working conditions. b

Volvo Trucks is launch-ing a new member of the I-Shift family: I-Shift with crawler gears. The new gears, which are added to the automated transmis-sion, provide exceptional start-ability for trucks car-rying heavy loads in de-manding situations. The system is entirely unique for series-produced heavy trucks.

Volvo Trucks’ new ver-sion of I-Shift makes it pos-sible to add up to two new crawler gears. This means, among other things, that the truck can move off from standstill and trans-port a gross combination weight (GCW) of up to 325 tonnes.

“I-Shift with crawler gears offers an entirely new scope for heavy trucks with automated transmission to regulate their speed when crawling slowly and revers-ing. The driver can haul a heavy load without worry-ing about getting into situa-tions that may lead to costly standstills,” says Peter Har-din, Product Manager FM and FMX, Volvo Trucks.

With the new crawler gears, the truck can drive at speeds as low as 0.5-2 km/h. This helps im-mensely during precision manoeuvres such as in construction and mainte-nance tasks.

“The vastly improved driveability and start-abil-ity with the new crawler gears makes the driver’s job far easier when oper-ating in difficult terrain on slippery surfaces with heavy loads, such as at construction sites, in mines or in forests,” explains Pe-ter Hardin.

For haulage firms car-rying out heavy transport operations on demanding surfaces as well as regular highway driving, crawler gears also offer considerable flexibility and the possibility of improved fuel economy.

“I-Shift with crawler gears makes it possible to start off from standstill in extreme situations. Com-bining them with a suitable rear axle ratio that opti-mises engine revs at high speeds results in lower fuel consumption on the high-

way. This is a significant benefit to haulage firms do-ing this kind of work,” says Peter Hardin.

Depending on applica-tion area, I-Shift is available with one or two forward crawler gears, and with or without two reverse crawl-er gears. Reverse crawler gears make it possible to reverse extremely slowly, which is a major advantage when reversing manoeu-vres require immense pre-cision.Facts, I-Shift with crawler gears• I-Shift with crawler gears

is a further development of Volvo Trucks’ I-Shift automated transmission.

• The new version of I-Shift has been specially developed for excellent start-ability and for driv-ing at particularly low speeds.

• I-Shift with crawler gears can allow driving as slowly as 0.5-2 km/h and can handle starts from standstill with a gross combination weight of up to 325 tonnes, which is unique for series-pro-duced trucks with auto-mated gearboxes.

• The transmission is avail-able as either a direct-drive or overdrive gearbox

with one or two crawler ratios. It is also possible to specify two extra reverse crawler gears.

• The crawler gears are in-tegrated into the I-Shift transmission. In order to handle the high loads involved, several compo-nents are made of high-strength materials. The gearbox is 12 cm longer than a conventional I-

Shift unit. • I-Shift with crawler gears

is available for Volvo Trucks’ 13and 16-litre engines in the Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FH and Volvo FH16.

Ratios, I-Shift with crawler gears• In a gearbox with one

crawler gear the ratio is 19:1 in a direct-drive gearbox, or 17:1 in an

overdrive gearbox. (The ratio of the lowest gear in a regular I-Shift direct-drive gearbox is 15:1.) In a direct-drive or an over-drive gearbox with two crawler gears the lowest ratio is 32:1.

• The ratio of the lowest reverse gear is 37:1 in a direct-drive gearbox. b

Larson Electronics, a leading manufacturer and supplier of industrial light-ing equipment, has an-nounced the release of a weatherproof portable spi-der box that allows opera-tors to plug in to 240 volt generators to operate 120 volt equipment.

The WALSB-240.50A-6X120.20A-WP portable spider box from Larson Electronics is built to pro-vide operators with a re-liable source of 120 volt power when only 240 volts is readily available. A ten foot chemical and abrasion resistant cable terminated in an indus-trial male cord cap car-

ries the 240 volt current to the box, which is then stepped down to 120 volts to operate equipment. This compact spider box features six duplex 120 volt outlets that provide a sealed and secure con-nection for up to twelve devices. Each receptacle features a hinged water-tight cover protecting the face from rain, water, and moisture when not in use. The spider box has short circuit and overload pro-tection, causing the unit to automatically shut down to protect it from damage if an overload occurs. The housing for this spider box is constructed from

steel and is powder coated with a glossy blue finish for corrosion resistance and aesthetics. A conve-nient carrying handle is located at the top of the unit, which also doubles for cable management when not in use. This spi-der box is ideal for power-ing 120 volt equipment on construction sites, in the entertainment industry, and other job sites where 240 volt generators supply the power.

“This new compact spi-der box is built for porta-bility and convenience as well as durability,” said Rob Bresnahan, CEO of Larson Electronics. “This power distribution system is con-structed with a carrying han-dle that can be easily used as a cord wrap for storing and transporting.” b

Producers can aggres-sively manage heavy crop residue and soils with the new True-Tandem 335 Bar-racuda vertical tillage tool from Case IH. Built on prov-en Agronomic Design prin-ciples, this rugged addition to the industry-leading Case IH vertical tillage line-up quickly cuts, incorporates and evenly distributes the most stubborn crop residue up to 4 inches deep. This creates the potential for a blacker surface finish and an increase in nutrient cycling for the next crop.

“We developed the new True-Tandem 335 Barracu-da to help producers more productively manage the record-breaking amounts of residue associated with new, high-yielding crop ge-netics — especially hybrids developed for standability with tougher stalks,” said Chris Lursen, Case IH till-age marketing manager. “Thanks to the industry-exclusive serrated blades engineered with Earth Metal and greater concav-ity than most other vertical tillage blades on the mar-ket, the Barracuda easily slices through tough resi-due, uproots root balls and levels out the soil to create the ideal environment for residue breakdown and seedling development.”

Capable of cutting up to 4 inches deep, the new

22-inch Earth Metal® Barra-cuda blades help producers reach deeper depths and achieve a smooth field fin-ish, while covering acres quickly. The blades pen-etrate hard, dry soils and break through surface com-paction layers to promote soil movement and uni-form density. New chisel-tipped serrations allow the blades to retain sharpness and durability, even under tough field conditions.

“As the chisel-tipped teeth wear, the valley be-tween each tip stays sharp, retaining the cutting edge and extending the blade’s lifetime,” said Lursen. “Combined with the high-quality Earth Metal material, the blades are built for du-rability, helping producers cover rocky terrain and un-even ground in confidence — even at high speeds.”

Built with the tough-ness producers demand, the True-Tandem 335 Bar-racuda vertical tillage tool works on a wide range of soils to quickly break down even the heaviest stubble and stalks. Additional fea-tures that ramp up the ag-gressiveness of the new True-Tandem 335 Barra-cuda include:

Capability to run at 6 to 9 miles per hour for higher speed, higher productivity soil management. Operat-ing at 8 miles per hour, a

producer using a 34-foot machine can cover 28 acres per hour.1• The 22-inch, crimp cen-

tre Earth Metal Barracu-da blades are engineered using a unique process and steel formula to prevent brittleness and elasticity, making blades stronger and more du-rable.

• An 18-degree gang angle matched to each blade’s shallow concavity that provides thorough soil mixing without causing backside blade compac-tion like competitive de-signs.

• Front and rear gangs and blades are properly indexed to one another, providing an even sur-face finish and a more even subsurface floor than most other vertical tillage tools and high-speed disks.

• The hydraulically adjust-able TigerPaw Crumbler rolling reel, which helps produce more uniform clod sizing, soil particle stratification and residue distribution.

• The ability to retrofit the Barracuda blade to Case IH True-Tandem 330 Turbo or 335VT models. The True-Tandem 335

Barracuda is available in working widths from 22 to 34 feet to match most trac-tors. Whether spring or fall, producers can use the unit alone or in combination with other tillage operations to achieve soil conditions for uniform crop emergence. b

Companies work-ing on new construction projects often have sev-eral crane model options when it comes to a lifting project. Spaces tend to be less congested, allowing larger cranes to be easily maneuvered into location and quickly repositioned around the site to pick and place materials. A variety of options – swing-away and luffing jibs, full coun-terweights and boom in-serts – can be added to the crane with relative ease to meet configuration require-ments.

It’s during maintenance lifts on existing structures in congested downtown settings in major metro-politan areas when crane options narrow and the

expertise and deep equip-ment fleet of a lifting com-pany pays dividends. Add to the mix the challenge of not being able to lift over areas occupied by recover-ing patients, and you have the recent project success-fully and efficiently com-pleted by the Dravosburg, PA, branch of Anthony Crane USA by using its new Terex® AC 250-1 all terrain crane. Paging Dr. Anthony

Anthony Crane was brought in to support Pitts-burgh’s power and indus-trial contractor, McKamish Inc., to remove old HVAC units from the rooftop of the Allegheny General Hospital. “The building was 157-ft (47.9-m) tall, and we had to reach 40 ft

(12.2-m) over the rooftop,” mentions Ron Shearer, Ac-count Manager/Crane Spe-cialist at Anthony Crane. “There were a number of picks to be made, of which the heaviest weighed ap-proximately 15,000 lb (6.8 tonnes).”

Typically Anthony Crane would enlist a high capacity all terrain crane with a luffing jib and full counterweight due to the height of the building and the radius required to per-form the lifts. However, this was neither a typical job nor typical circum-stances. Work area con-finements did not allow the assembly of the luffing jib for the crane, so only the main boom could be used. “The crane had to be

set up in a loading zone to eliminate lifting over the occupied portions of the hospital,” explains Andrew Longacre, GSP, of Anthony Crane. “The work area was extremely small and there was a sky bridge we had to work around that did not allow assembly of inserts or luffing jib.”

The crane was required to work at a radius that would allow the boom to raise straight up and over the building without hitting the skybridge to make the HVAC equipment lifts and load the old pieces onto trucks. “The only way to accomplish the lift was to use a crane that gave us a powerful main boom and capacity with just the main stack of counterweights, so it could fit in an area with minimal swing room,” adds Shearer. In his mind there was only one crane model that would fit the bill. Terex AC 250-1 the Right Prescription

Recently added to An-thony Cane’s fleet, the Terex AC 250-1 all terrain crane gave them the com-bination of power, main boom length and compact carrier size to efficiently handle the picks at Allegh-eny General Hospital. “The AC 250-1 crane is one of the most compact six-axle cranes on the market and offers the most compact outrigger base and tail ra-dius work area in its class,” says David Naab, Regional Business Manager for Ter-ex Cranes. “Yet it has a 262-ft (80-m) main boom, which is exactly what An-thony Crane needed for this project.”

Because Shearer had the new 300-US-ton (250-tonne) capacity class crane at his disposal, this eliminated the additional time and expense of sup-porting equipment for a

larger crane. Crew mem-bers did not need an as-sist crane to assemble and disassemble a luffing jib on site or the extra truck loads for jib transport. Ad-ditionally the extra man-power requirement for assembly/disassembly of the jib wasn’t needed. “By using the AC 250-1 crane with only the main boom, we easily saved more than $12,000 compared to using a crane with a jib.”

The strength of this Terex crane’s load chart also saved on the counter-weight configuration for this project. The height of the building required the AC 250-1 crane’s center pin to be 60 ft (18.3 m) off of the building. The op-erator used the full 262.5 ft (80 m) of main boom to reach the 40 ft (12.2 m) onto the building’s roof to hoist the HVAC units and components away. This required an operating ra-dius of more than 100 ft (30.5 m).

Knowing the heaviest piece to be lifted weighed 15,000 lb (6,8 tonnes), Shearer prepared the amount of counterweight required for all the lifts. According to Naab, “The AC 250-1 crane offers a 16,200-lb (7.3-tonne) rat-ed capacity when work-ing at a 120-ft (36.6-m) radius with only 115,300 lb (52.3 tonnes) of coun-terweight.” Shearer adds, “This allowed us to use only the main stack and not the winged weights to reduce the required swing room. Additionally, it saved us 4 loads and approximately $4000 in shipping costs to and from the site.”

Only the Terex AC 250-1 crane and 4 truckloads of counterweight and sup-porting equipment made the short 13-mi (20.2-km) trip from its Dravosburg

yard to the hospital’s downtown Pittsburgh lo-cation. Once on site, the operator took advantage of the crane’s all-wheel steer-ing to maneuver it into the cramped loading zone stag-ing area. “The crane offers several steering options, in-cluding off-wall, all-wheel and crab to efficiently ma-neuver into tight spaces,” offers Naab.

In less than two hours the crane was rigged and ready for the lifts. In a matter of a few hours, the HVAC units and sup-porting components were picked from the roof and placed onto trucks for transport. “We had to carefully lift the units over the sky bridge to set the old units on the trucks,” adds Longacre.

While the weight and size of the pieces posed little challenge for Antho-ny Crane, the location of the lift certainly did. Hav-ing the combination of compact size, long boom and strong load chart of the Terex AC 250-1 crane helped the company to safely, efficiently and cost-effectively handle the job.

“Where other models would’ve required inserts and/or a swing away jib, we were able to complete this job with only the main boom of the AC 250-1 crane,” mentions Mr. Ray G. Anthony, President & CEO. “This was the best op-tion both operationally and economically for us and the customer. We also sin-cerely appreciated the full support of the Terex sales and maintenance teams, as they spent countless hours with our operator and tech-nicians to review every part of the crane and were present for the first series of jobs.” b

The governments of Canada and Manitoba will invest more than $582,000 in unique, state-of-the-art equipment so a local company can transform Manitoba-grown produce into nutritious and flavor-ful purees, Federal Agri-culture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Ru-ral Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced today.

Canadian Prairie Gar-den Puree Products Inc. have acquired new equip-ment and modified their existing operation in or-der to cook more types of fruits, vegetables and pulse crops like chick-peas, navy beans and len-tils, then rapidly chill and package the pureed prod-ucts into sterile pouches. They are the only com-pany in the world with this technology, which is more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly than traditional process-ing methods. The tech-nology also ensures the purees retain better co-lour, flavour, texture and nutritional benefits with-out any preservatives or additives.

Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment also supports the Manitoba gov-

ernment’s goal of creating a $5.5 billion food processing industry by 2022, which is currently at $4.95 billion.

The company’s expan-sion, allows them to pur-chase millions of tonnes of culled vegetables that might otherwise be sent to a landfill or sold at a lower price for animal feed. In five years, the company plans to expand from nine employees to nearly 60.

The company, located at the Food Development Centre in Portage la Prai-rie, has received several awards in 2015 for their products including for Best New Product at the Mani-toba Food Processors As-sociation’s awards and a “NEXTY” award at the Nat-ural Products Expo West in California.

The purees can be sold to other food manufactur-ers and other food service customers. The company’s unique process allows pu-rees to be stored at room temperature for up to two years. The sterile packag-ing system also uses 30 per cent less water and energy than other processes cur-rently in use in the indus-try.

Government funding represents 50 per cent of the cost of the new equip-ment. The Growing Value

program provides financial assistance to help exist-ing agri-businesses adapt to market forces and envi-ronmental considerations, increasing their ability to compete in domestic and international markets.

The federal and pro-vincial governments are investing $176 million in cost-shared programming in Manitoba under Grow-ing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territo-rial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping pro-ducers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets.Quotes

“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Canada’s pro-ducers and food proces-sors. Investments such as this help promote growth in our Canadian agricultur-al industry and increasing income opportunities for farmers.” - Federal Agri-culture Minister Lawrence MacAulay

“Manitoba’s food pro-cessing sector continues to grow, driven by new ideas, technology-savvy entrepreneurs and con-sumer demand for foods and drinks that are nutri-ent-dense,” said Minister Kostyshyn. “This creates new jobs, strengthens the rural economy and en-courages growth through-out the entire agricultural industry.” - Manitoba Ag-riculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn

“I am very proud of the good work our team has done in building this world-class food process-ing business. This type of value-added agri-business is a very important part of the community. We are creating jobs, building in-novation in food process-ing and creating more opportunity for area farm-ers to sell their crops not only locally but around the world. This funding is critical to the success of small businesses like ours. My partners, Har-vey and Martin Pollock and I are very grateful to receive it and will put it to work, growing and expanding our young business.” - Chief operat-ing officer and owner of Canadian Prairie Garden Puree Products Inc., Kelly Beaulieu. b

Lake Erie Portable Screeners introduces a propane-powered screen-er as a clean and cost-effective alternative to diesel power. The new Pitbull 2300 Propane Screening Plant is one of the first of its kind, deliv-ering maximum efficiency and high outputs with a wide range of materials, including topsoil, mulch, gravel, stone and asphalt. The machine’s low-emis-sion propane components provide an alternative to diesel equipment affect-ed by the spike in prices

caused by Tier 4 Final emission standards.

“While we want to of-fer the market a low-emis-sion, green product that performs with power, we recognized that the Tier 4 regulations on diesel en-gines were driving costs up. Our team looked for another solution,” said Stuart Foradora, Lake Erie Portable Screeners factory representative. “We built the Pitbull 2300 Propane with a cleaner burning engine that comes at very minimal additional cost. The screener has very low

emissions and is still com-pact, portable and able to handle all the applications the Pitbull 2300 can — plus more.”

The Pitbull 2300P is al-most the same machine as the Pitbull 2300, aside from the power source. Featuring a Zenith 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder, 48-horsepower propane engine that could also be easily converted to natural gas, it can do any job its diesel-powered counterpart can. The pro-pane also results in a clean-er engine that’s easier to maintain, allowing it to run

longer with fewer repairs. That combination makes the machine a valuable and cost-effective tool for landscapers, energy facili-ties, contractors, municipal workers or as part of rental fleets. In addition, T4F die-sel engines of the same size typically cost at least 30 percent more.

The extremely low emissions make the Pit-bull 2300P ideal for op-eration in confined spac-es, such as buildings and mine shafts, and elimi-nate the need to obtain special permits. The Pit-bull 2300P also provides a significant return on investment by making it unnecessary to buy or rent expensive ventilation systems and masks that would be required to run a diesel model in a tight space. The propane en-gine is also quieter than most diesels.

Lake Erie Portable Screeners constructed the Pitbull 2300P to share the same features that make the Pitbull 2300 simple to use, maintain and trans-port. These include full hydraulic operation, tubu-

lar frame construction, a Torflex axle and a revers-ible shaker.

With the Pitbull 2300P’s width of 8 feet, 4-1/2 inches and either a standard pintle hitch or an optional gooseneck towing package, the ma-chine is easy to move from site to site. A 10K Torflex axle with oil bath hubs provides a cushion-ing effect so the unit tows smoothly, reducing stress to the tow vehicle. Upon arrival, users can quickly and easily lower the unit to operating position with the hydraulic system, eliminating pressure on the axle, tires or wheels during screening. When the machine is ready to be moved, the operator can return it back to towing position with the flip of a lever. The unit also fea-tures heavy-duty suspen-sion, electric brakes and trailer lights for safe and legal travel.

The Pitbull 2300P’s 20-foot-long stacking con-veyor adjusts hydraulical-ly from as low as 7 feet, 6 inches, up to 13 feet to feed material directly into a dump truck or tri-axle trailer. The height of the conveyor also allows op-erators to create bigger stockpiles, increasing ef-ficiency by reducing the number of times equip-ment needs to be moved. These attributes, com-bined with the ability to place the machine at the point of excavation, mini-mize spillage and dramat-ically reduce cycle times and haulage costs often associated with loading and unloading material when using stationary plants.

Lake Erie Portable Screeners builds Pit-bull 2300P frames with high-quality, structural tube steel. The tubular construction cuts down on noise and vibration, which also minimizes the risk of cracks and struc-tural failures common in machines with C-channel construction. The screen-ing plant is made entirely

of heavy-duty materi-als, all the stress points are fully reinforced, and both attachment points and stress points are 100 percent welded with high-strength steel. The result is a machine with a curb weight of 13,500 pounds.

The screening plant incorporates a loading apron that accepts up to three yards of material at a time depending on the feed rate. With its low dump height of 8 feet, 4-1/2 inches, operators do not need loading ramps; they can fill the hopper using typical construction equipment, such as skid steers, backhoes, loaders or excavators.

The portable screening plant also has an upper and lower screening deck, each with more than 41 square feet of screening area. The decks are each equipped with two sec-tions of screen media. The company offers optional finger decks for the top deck in addition to a wide range of screen openings for processing all types of materials. Operators can change screens quickly and easily by loosening the tension bolts holding them in place. The screen-ers also can be equipped with optional upper and lower discharge chutes to allow for classifying up to three different sizes of screened materials.

In addition to the ad-justable stacking conveyor, the Pitbull 2300P features a hydraulically driven trans-fer conveyor that moves screened material from the hopper to the stacking con-veyor. Hydraulic motors on the conveyors provide continuous power flow to achieve production rates up to 100 yards of clean, saleable material per hour. The Pitbull 2300P convey-ors are hydraulic rather than chain- or belt-driven like many competing mod-els, a feature that elimi-nates the risk of power loss and downtime due to bro-ken chains or belts. b

Highway construction and maintenance manag-ers in the State of Texas now have a single source for knowledgeable service and reliable products for portable traffic controls. Pe-ter Vieveen, President and founder of North America Traffic Inc. (NAT), has an-nounced the appointment of Flex Supply LLC as au-thorized sales and service distributor for the NAT line of portable traffic signals and automated flagger as-sistance devices.

Vieveen spoke highly of the latest addition to his growing distributor network. “With their ex-

tensive background in the construction industry and their years of experience in equipment rentals, Flex Supply is really the ideal fit for NAT’s customer-focused approach to busi-ness. They have first-hand insight into what custom-ers need, plus the know-how to deliver it.”Reliability for highway projects

A family-run business under the ownership of Chad and Tracie Osborne, Flex Supply is based in Wi-nona, TX and serves high-way projects throughout the state. Chad Osborne reports that he was familiar

with NAT portable signals having had North America Traffic AFADs as part of their product line offering, and they now welcomed the opportunity to add the PTL line to their inventory. “This is a big state with a lot of miles between proj-ects,” he notes. “Contrac-tors need a reliable product on their site. They can’t af-ford to be waiting around for service because of a signal problem. With their responsibility to the public, they have to feel confident that their signals will do the job when they have lane closures overnight.”

Flex Supply specializes in complete traffic con-trol solutions, providing a complete range of TXDOT-approved barricades, signs and message boards, light-ing systems and control devices. Now, Flex Sup-ply can offer the original AFAD (automated flagger assistance device) as well

as NAT’s versatile range of solar-powered portable traffic signals and control systems. NAT committed to people

The Osbornes, along with Sales Manager Frank Sturgeon, inspected the NAT headquarters, not far from Niagara Falls, before committing to their dis-tribution agreement. Al-though the factory and en-gineering facility are well equipped with the latest manufacturing equipment and processes, the technol-ogy is not what impressed Flex Supply the most. “It’s their commitment and in-vestment in their people,’ says Chad Osborne.

“Their approach to production, to marketing, their continuous training... Peter’s leadership and his drive to make his company better for the customer is what set North America Traffic apart. We could see that NAT has the best unit in the field – and now we see that they have the best service support, too!”Save costs and improve safety

Osborne feels that the simplicity of the NAT controls and setup is also uniquely suited to the needs of Texas customers.

“Our construction season is 365 days,” Osborne con-tinues. “So the workforce is very stable, but em-ployees are also very fo-cused on particular tasks. NAT equipment is simple enough, you don’t need to hire a dedicated crew member to set up traffic patterns and lane closures – anyone on the crew can learn this very quickly. That will save costs and will improve safety be-cause you can have people who are qualified for the traffic equipment on site all the time.”Meeting specialized needs

North America Traffic has earned its position in the market by constantly innovating and responding to unique needs. Flex Sup-ply is already taking advan-tage of NAT’s custom engi-neering services by having them adapt a controller for its portable signals and hardwiring it into the con-troller programming for fixed signals at a diamond intersection. NAT will now offer the package as an op-tion for standalone signals as well as for portable sig-nals working in tandem with the permanent traf-fic lights. Flex Supply is

also working with NAT to streamline the automation features of the standard AFAD sets to reduce costs on units that will be used only by a dedicated onsite operator.

Flex Supply has its ini-tial NAT units for its fleet, with more to be deliv-ered over the next several months. “We get calls ev-ery day about AFADs and signals,” Osborne reports. “In our other business, we install permanent signals and we work with traffic signals on a daily basis. We know what the business needs, and that’s why we chose North America Traf-fic.” b

Patented pump drive adapts to almost any pump or drive with modular com-ponents. Shaker-screen bearings, paver bearings and adaptable high-torque reducers shown in cut-away.

Regal Power Transmis-sion Solutions introduces its new Durst modular hydraulic pump drive in booth 1230 at Agg1, along with exhibits and demon-strations of Rollway shaker screen and Sealmaster® bearings, as well as grit-duty gear reducers from Browning, Hub City, and Foote-Jones. The booth will feature an operating gear drive submerged in sand to demonstrate Regal equip-ment durability, as well as the capabilities of the com-pany’s wireless machinery health-monitoring system. Visitors can also use an “Interactive Plant” touch-screen to pull up details on Regal product solutions shown in aggregate and paving operations.Patented pump drive with one to eight pump connections

Durst’s new hydraulic pump drive uses a patent-ed modular design featur-ing pump pads and spline

adapters that allow rapid build of units to fit almost any input shaft or SAE pump connection. Clever engineering allows a single gear case to fit different bell housings on the driv-en side. Engineered with modular internal gears and exceptional parts consoli-dation, the pump’s design enables rapid assembly and shipment from build centers throughout the U.S. The compact unit be-gins with a cast iron hous-ing, AGMA Class 10 spur gearing, heavy duty ball bearings and a one-piece gear and shaft design for long, rugged service. The pump’s patented pad de-sign ensures a continuous flow of oil through the bearing to provide constant wet-spline operation even at startup.

Durst, along with Hub City and Foote-Jones, is also structured for rapid development of “one off” modified-standard units and invites inquiries for non-cataloged drives, as well as full custom units.Quick-delivery shaft-mount and concentric reducers

Hub City’s Pow-erTorque shaft-mount re-

ducers will be displayed in cutaway to highlight the carburized and ground, AGMA-11 gears that pro-vide exceptionally high torque density in a com-pact package, with up to 98.5 percent efficiency per stage. These versatile units are ideal value-priced drop-in replacements for ap-plications such as bucket elevators and bulk convey-ors. A wide range of acces-sories includes conversion kits for screw conveyor applications. Warranted for 18 months, they feature metal-reinforced double-lip seals riding on precision-ground shafts to deliver long service life. Ready for off-the-shelf delivery, PowerTorque reducers are available in 10 sizes up to 200 hp rating, with output speeds to 200 rpm.

48-hour shipment is available on the most popular sizes and ratios of Foote-Jones Line-O-Power helical concentric-shaft reducers. A cutaway dis-play at AGG1 highlights the rugged housings, high-capacity bearings, ground/skived gears and large di-ameter shafts. Double-, triple- and quadruple-re-duction units are available

in ten sizes up to 1550 hp input and 429,300 in-lb output. Surface-hardened helical gearing is rated to AGMA standards, and ta-pered roller bearings on all shafts provide anticipated bearing life in excess of AGMA standards. Models available in the Fast-Foote 48-hour delivery program include double and triple reduction units rated for up to 200 hp continuous input.

Browning’s multi-pat-ented TorqTaper Plus he-lical shaft-mount reducers allow easy installation from front or rear for compact in-stallations with short shaft lengths. A patented three-layer barrier seal is key to the reducer’s industry lead-ing three-year warranty. Available for up to 500 hp input, the TorqTaper re-ducer features carburized, ground AGMA-12 gearing and tapered roller bearings on all shafts, providing high torque densities that allow downsizing in many applications. Larger diam-eter shafts also allow high overhung loads.Grit-duty bearings for shaker screens, paving equipment and other harsh duty

Regal’s Rollway busi-ness will display its spheri-cal roller bearing for shak-er screen applications at AGG1. These units are specially designed for high performance and long life in screening equipment to compensate for the high temperatures and thermal

differentials created by the application’s high speeds, accelerations and eccentric loads. Radial clearances are increased to between C3 and C4, with reduced tol-erances for the bore, out-side diameter and internal clearance. A high-quality alternative to more costly products, Rollway shaker screen bearings meet in-dustry standards with a ro-bust design that starts with 100-percent forged rings and superfinished races for long life in adverse, marginal-lubrication con-ditions. The thick-section, two-piece brass cage is centrifugally cast and ma-chined, guided on the outer race for precision and sta-bility during harsh use.

Sealmaster Paver Bear-ings will demonstrate why they are industry standard for OEM builders of asphalt equipment. Engineered with various combinations of front and rear double-lip contact seals that withstand temperatures up to 400°F, Sealmaster Paver bearings can further protect interior components with optional front and rear rotating seals, as well as optional shields. The high-tempera-ture components and three layers of protection enable the bearings to effectively shield the interior compo-nents and resist the heat and erosion of asphalt. Ductile or cast iron hous-ings are available in eight mounting configurations. The wide inner race pro-motes stability on the shaft

and the wide outer ring provides improved mis-alignment capability within the housing. A unique land riding brass retainer mini-mizes wear on both ball and retainer, while maxi-mizing stability. Sealmaster Paver Bearings are factory replacement for the most common brands of asphalt handling machinery.

Sealmaster Mounted Gold ball bearings, USRB mounted spherical roller and RPB mounted tapered roller bearings are engi-neered with unique and patented features for su-perior sealing to retain grease and exclude con-taminants in harsh envi-ronments. The Gold Line of mounted ball bearings utilize the industry’s wid-est outer race and a heavy duty labyrinth seal, allow-ing for the unique land rid-ing ball retainer and space for the dimple and lock pin to stabilize the insert. This maintains a direct line of lubrication into the bearing cavity. The locking pin and dimple system prevents outer race rotation and al-lows a full ± 2 degrees misalignment.

Sealmaster USRB per-formance mounted spheri-cal roller bearings feature black oxide treated bearing steel races with optimized geometry for load capacity, misalignment and speed capabilities. The USRB is available in both set-screw locking and adapter mounting system. The felt

Lafarge North America is making essential contri-butions to building more durable cities with high-performance concrete con-taining NewCem slag ce-ment and fly ash to achieve the high-strength, resilien-cy and sustainability goals of the new University Med-ical Center (UMC) of New Orleans.

Since Hurricanes Ka-trina and Rita, Southeast Louisiana has worked dil-igently to create a stron-ger, more resilient built environment. Constructed to withstand a variety of natural disasters, the 2.3-million square-foot UMC complex, which opened in August 2015, restores much-needed healthcare services to the local community and serves as a key center for academic training and research. The $1.1 bil-lion state-of-the-art facil-ity, which is designed to LEED Silver standards, is the only level one trau-ma center in the region

and serves as the hub of an expanding downtown medical district in New Orleans.

For the UMC New Or-leans project, Lafarge pro-vided high-performance concrete containing two different blended cement mix designs that incorpo-rated NewCem slag ce-ment and fly ash. Blended cements, which contain supplementary cementi-tious materials (SCMs), enhance the strength and durability of concrete, re-duce concrete’s permeabil-ity to water and aggressive chemicals, and contribute to LEED credits. The use of SCMs such as slag (a by-product of steel-mak-ing) and fly ash (a coal-combustion by-product) in concrete enables the reuse of industrial by-products that would otherwise be landfilled and reduces the amount of virgin material required for concrete.

Concrete exposed to sulphates is vulnerable to deterioration that usually

takes the form of loss of adhesion and strength but may also be seen as expan-sion, cracking and spalling. Due to the severe (Class 3) sulphate-rich soil found at the project site, Lafarge’s quality control team evalu-ated the sulphate resis-tance of various high-per-formance mix recipes over 18 months using ASTM test method C1012. Based on those studies, Lafarge rec-ommended and supplied 34,000 cubic yards of a high-performance concrete containing a 50% Portland Type I/II-50% NewCem slag cement blend for the United States Press Release PAGE 2/2 foundation slabs that would provide long-term durability, impart high sulphate resistance and achieve a compressive strength of 7,000 psi. The resilient and eco-friendly design of the UMC complex also relied on 75,000 cubic yards of high-performance concrete containing a 20% fly ash-80% Portland Type I/II blended cement mix that Lafarge produced and supplied for the beams, columns, elevated floors and other structural appli-cations. b

the manufacturing plant in Motherwell, Scotland to the isolated mines of Phakant in Kachin State, northern Myanmar.

What followed was a mammoth expedition by container ship, barge and road that took the trucks a total of two and a half months for the trucks to complete.Ready, steady, go

The first part of the journey, which took five weeks, saw the trucks as-sembled and packed in Motherwell before being transported 9,000 nauti-cal miles (16,668 km) to Yangon, via Singapore by containership. Once in Yangon the trucks were transferred to three barg-es, with a maximum of 10 per barge.

“Loading the trucks onto the barges was no easy task,” says AHM Heavy’s Marcus-Zaw Na-ing Oo. “To avoid sinking the barges and trucks they were loaded in a shuffle sequence to maintain the barge’s balance until all machines were in place.

“Water levels were critical at this point. If the water level is too low, it cannot support the barge and its cargo. Too high and with a fast flowing river, it’s unsafe and we risk the barge and trucks being swept away.”

Once loaded safely the trucks began their jour-ney along the Uyu River to Phakant’s closest port, Kathar. This part of the journey, just under 600 miles (966 km), took a further three weeks.

Once disembarked the final leg of the journey – a mere 120 miles (193km) – took just three days, with the trucks driving to the mine site’s equip-ment yards in Phakant. But even this part of the journey was difficult.

“The trucks were de-livered during Myanmar’s wet season,” says Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo, “so the roads were often flooded and very muddy, but thanks to their excellent traction the trucks were able to cope with the con-ditions and we completed the journey relatively eas-ily.” Mission accomplished

Safely arrived at their final destination, the ma-chines were then tested and commissioned by AHM Heavy’s Terex Truck trained engineers to the satisfaction of the

clients. With this process completed the trucks were then registered with the Myanmar Government. This new registration scheme takes three to four weeks and is required of all existing and new equipment operated at the country’s mines.

The trucks are now fully up and running, working almost 24/7, says Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo, only under-going scheduled stoppages for planned maintenance and servicing. The new trucks are only operation-al during Myanmar’s dry

season, which runs from roughly November to May. For the remainder of the year, they are stood down.

“The trucks are playing a vital role, transporting blasted rock and earth from the mine to the processing plant,” says Marcus-Zaw Naing Oo. “So far feedback form the client has been ex-cellent. Our reports show-ing outstanding availabil-ity, productivity and fuel efficiency, with no major faults, or maintenance re-quirements.” b

It was an epic ten-week journey, covering a stag-gering 13,000 thousand miles by road, river and sea - but 29 hard-wearing Terex Trucks have arrived at the jade mines of Myan-mar to work on one of the most remote and challeng-ing terrains to be found anywhere.

Believed to be the bringer of prosperity and good fortune, Jade is an extremely valuable com-modity in Asian cultures, said to be a bridge be-tween heaven and hell. Kachin State in north-ern Myanmar is home to some of the world’s highest quality deposits, known as jadeite. These are estimated to be worth up to US$31 billion an-nually, almost half of the country’s GDP, and are shipped overseas for use in jewellery and other products.

Much of the extrac-

tion of the jade deposits is done by ‘boulder mining’. This is a process where the overburden material is removed to expose the rocks below, after which the jade-containing rocks are separated, washed and processed to reveal the pockets of precious jade inside.

The extraction pro-cess is far from easy. It’s a tough job for robust, reliable equipment. And this is no place for break-downs. That’s why, when three local mine operators needed additional hauling machines to take on the job of transporting thou-sands of tonnes of blasted rocks and earth 2 km or more from the mine to the processing plant, they called on Terex Trucks. In for the long haul

The three mining com-panies - Aung Hein Min Gems Co., Ltd., Yar Za Htar Ne Gems Co.,Ltd.,

Myanmar Thura Gems Co., Ltd . – contacted Yan-gon-based dealer Aung Hein Min Co. Ltd (AHM Heavy) to supply them with 19 Terex Trucks 91 tonne (100 ton) capac-ity TR100s and 10 Terex Trucks 55 tonne (60 ton) capacity TR60s.

For two of the custom-ers, Terex Trucks had al-ready proved their worth. Aung Hein Min Gems Co., Ltd had previously or-dered six 38 tonne (41.9 ton) capacity TA400 ar-ticulated haulers, while Yar Za Htar Ne Gems Co. Ltd. had 20 Terex Trucks TA400 in their fleet. Myan-mar Thura Gems Co., Ltd is a new customer.

Choosing the right trucks for the job was the easy part. AHM Heavy, a Terex Trucks dealer since 2013, now had somehow to tackle the challenge of transporting the machines over 13,000 miles from

seal with flinger provides a good balance between contaminant entry, grease retention and friction.

RPB Series tapered roll-er bearings feature rugged split cast-iron housings and cartridge inserts. The in-serts are field replaceable to simplify maintenance and maximize uptime. The bearing cartridge is designed to compensate for ± 3 degrees static mis-alignment. Patented felt lined seals, mounted be-tween the races, act like a filter, and a rotating flinger helps repel contamination buildup on the seals. A positive lubrication system allows direct grease flow into the bearing.Life Cycle Engineering Services

Regal Power Transmis-sion Solutions Lifecycle Engineering will present

its support services that maximize equipment per-formance and lifespan. In addition to hardware, Regal engineers provide diagnostics, training/edu-cation, design, installation, monitoring and repair. The program aims to increase customers’ OEE (overall equipment effectiveness), improve energy efficiency, increase product output and customer success with cost-effective solutions from a single provider/partner who takes “owner-ship” of critical mechanical power transmission and material handling systems. As part of the exhibit, a machinery health-monitor-ing system will display the condition of key operating components in a mechani-cal drive partially sub-merged in sand. b

As a manager of impor-tant infrastructure, The

Jacques Cartier and Cham-plain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) is a Crown corpora-tion established in 1978 that is responsible for the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the Cham-plain Bridge, the Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure, the Île des Sœurs Bypass Bridge, the fe deral sections of Bonaventure Expressway and the Honoré Mercier Bridge, as well as the Melo-cheville Tunnel. The Corpo-ration manages, maintains, and repairs these important Greater Montreal structures to ensure the safe passage of thousands of users ev-ery day. It also ensures that these critical structures re-main safe, fully functional and aesthetically pleasing both today and in the future.

At a technical briefing in December, JCCBI presented

its report on major projects carried out in 2015. The ambitious program estab-lished at the start of the sea-son was completed despite a highly challenging work environment. JCCBI has completed maintenance and repair work on its entire net-work to ensure user safety, Greater Montreal mobility, and infrastructure longevity. Here is a summary of these projects:Integrated management of Champlain Bridge

To maintain the safe passage of users until the opening of the new cor-ridor, JCCBI implemented exceptional measures on the Champlain Bridge. Through the integrated management of data on bridge condition and be-haviour, JCCBI identified priority projects and pre-ventively managed the

risks associated with this infrastructure at the end of its service life.

As of December 2015, 34 modular trusses have been installed on the Champlain Bridge and 43 will be added in 2016. Modular trusses are addi-tional steel structures that support the full load of the girders. They are installed under the edge girders and rest on the bridge piers. These structural compo-nents fully compensate for current and future deterio-ration of the edge girders.

Work to replace expan-sion joints and repair piers was also carried out as part

of the major maintenance program. In addition, a new traffic light system for truck traffic was commis-sioned in summer 2015 to optimize load distribution on the bridge. A full 90% of this work was carried out from the river to mini-mize traffic obstructions.

Thanks to these pre-ventive measures on the Champlain Bridge, includ-ing work in response to the recommendations of the latest inspection report, JC-CBI observed a significant improvement in overall bridge behaviour.Bonaventure Expressway

JCCBI finished replac-ing the deck of the raised lanes of the Bonaventure Expressway by completing the segment in the Avenue Pierre-Dupuy sector. The repair program began in 2008.Honoré Mercier Bridge

As part of its program to replace the deck of the Honoré Mercier Bridge, JCCBI has completed work on the deck sec-tion above the seaway. Initially planned on an accelerated eight-week schedule, repair work was completed 15 days early. Replacement of the Hon-oré Mercier Bridge deck is the biggest project carried out by Aboriginal peoples in Canada.Jacques Cartier Bridge

To breathe new life into the structure and ex-tend its lifespan another 50 years, JCCBI has con-tinued its major main-tenance program on the Jacques Cartier Bridge. The steel structure above the St. Lawrence Seaway was painted, and work was carried out on the steel structure and piers below the bridge.

Champlain Bridge Ice Control Structure

Major work to build a dedicated bike path and reinforce the deck on the Champlain Bridge Ice Con-trol Structure will continue until spring 2016.

These five major work blitzes at the Champlain Bridge exemplify collabora-tion and work optimization. 2016 projects include the Jacques Cartier Bridge light-ing project, with the instal-lation of lighting systems in summer-fall 2016. JCCBI is proud to leverage its expertise in leading this flagship project that is part of the festivities surrounding the 150th anni-versary of Canadian Confed-eration and Montreal’s 375th anniversary.

‘4Site’ is a new project management service in-troduced by Terex Wash-ing Systems (TWS) to specifically aid customers and distributors with the installation of TWS equip-ment, providing three tai-lored packages to choose from, Silver, Gold or Plati-num. ‘4Site’ comprehen-sive management service provides enhanced reliable and efficient levels of sup-port every step of the TWS installation. Each of the project management pack-

ages include 4 key steps and are supported by TWS at an international level through regional partners from its headquarters in Northern Ireland.

The announcement of ‘4Site’ was made during TWS global distributor fo-rum event which was ex-tremely well received by the network who regards it as an essential additional service to further comple-ment TWS’s product range. Austin Carey, Managing Director, Blue Machinery

(Scotland) Ltd commented “The introduction of this new project management service is a very positive approach by TWS which can only help strengthen the brand’s position in the global marketplace, fur-thermore we are delighted as a distributor to be able to offer such a comprehen-sive management service providing a turnkey solu-tion to our customers.”

Sean Loughran, Direc-tor TWS commented “The response to the introduc-tion of ‘4Site’ from our global distributor network has been incredible and distributors are excited about offering the service to their customers. TWS is the premier provider of ad-vanced plant solutions and the introduction of ‘4Site’ project management ser-vice greatly enhances our position in the marketplace to better serve our custom-ers. Furthermore our new multi-million pound facil-ity at our dedicated TWS headquarters site puts us in a very strong position mov-ing forward into 2016 and beyond.” The Complete Project Management Service

‘4Site’ is led by Garry

Stewart, Project Manager TWS, whom has 20 years’ experience in the indus-try. The new project man-agement service ‘4Site’ is responding to business growth and increased cus-tomer demand and will aim to serve key markets globally. The project will be led by Project Manager who will work closely with TWS distributors, service providers and internal teams to fulfill TWS com-mitment to provide exper-tise, project management and technical and service support globally.

Commenting on the new project management service, Garry Stewart, TWS project Manager, stat-ed “We believe that rapid response, qualified and ef-fective support is crucial in meeting end-users needs, letting distributors deliver on their promises as well as developing long term cus-tomer relationships, which is exactly what ‘4Site’ will offer”.

Gerhard Kronlacher, Field Service/Sales, TWS distributor in Austria added “I certainly will be availing of the project man-agement services offered through ‘4Site’ on and forthcoming installations going forward. This service truly brings together an ex-perienced installation team who are working with this equipment on a daily basis which can only strengthen the already good service of-fered by TWS and Kuhn, Austria.”

The Right Package to Deliver Your Promise

TWS offer 3 tailored service management pack-ages, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with a common theme centered on effec-tive and efficient commu-nication throughout the process. The silver package is complementary with all TWS machines and en-sures simplification of the installation and commis-sioning of TWS washplants globally.

The ‘4Site’ Gold pack-age provides an experi-enced TWS Site Engineer who will work closely with the distributors/customer’s team to assist and/or su-pervise the complete in-stallation of TWS plant. In addition this package offers on site plant commission-ing and training relative to the TWS equipment being installed.

The Platinum package consists of a complete turn-key service delivered by the TWS team to include total planning and manage-ment of all aspects associ-ated with the entire instal-lation and commissioning of the TWS supplied plant and this is undertaken by a dedicated team of TWS engineers.

John Bracken, General Operations Manager, Duo Plc, TWS distributor in Eng-land and Wales, UK added “ ‘4Site’ will be something we as a company will certainly be using, we regularly have numerous installations hap-pening simultaneously and

the various services packag-es offered through this new project management service can only enhance our offer-ing and service to our cus-tomers.”

Enrico Kallmyer, Sales Manager West-Germany, Christophel, TWS Distribu-tor in Germany echoed these comments and added “ ‘4Site’ project is another display of vision from the dynamic team at TWS. TWS continue to push boundar-ies; their enthusiasm is re-lentless as is their desire to succeed. I look forward to using this new project man-agement service on future installations in Germany.”

Speaking after the an-nouncement Garry Stew-art, TWS project Manager, commented “We are very encouraged by the very positive response from our Distributor network for TWS ‘4Site’ Project Man-agement Packages. Our distributors are very keen to use this new service and to date we are currently working on a number of installations in the UK, Europe and the USA. The TWS team is dedicated to providing a cost effective and timely service to our distributor network. The modular concept of our wash plants coupled with the pre-plumbed & pre-wired features have been designed for rapid deploy-ment, which are features we plan to fully capitalize on with TWS ‘4Site’”. b

Don Hummer has a sim-ple philosophy. “I would never ask a driver to do something that I wouldn’t do myself.” And, for Hum-mer, founder and chairman of Oxford, Iowa - based Don Hummer Trucking, that includes putting his drivers behind the wheel of a truck he hasn’t person-ally driven and approved. His latest “stamp of ap-proval” is on the Kenworth T680, after he drove one for 30 days.

With 215 company trucks and 85 independent contrac-tors, the truckload carrier provides primarily dry van service for customers in a variety of industries, with a heavy focus on packaged foods and food ingredients, office furniture and build-ing products. Hummer said he’s always been hands-on – leaving the office several times a year, on long-dis-tance trips delivering freight. Staying in tune with drivers and customers keeps him grounded, he said. “Our cus-tomers don’t even know it’s

me when I’m out there mak-ing deliveries. The purpose is to stay connected with the business and drive the same routes, with the same equipment as our drivers. I’m one of them.” Last July, Hummer and his son Chris, president of the company, visited with MHC Kenworth, which had just expanded its territory into Iowa. Accord-ing to Chris, the Hummers liked what they saw in the T680 and decided to rent a truck from PacLease for one month, in order to gauge comfort and performance.

“I’ve driven a lot of trucks over my lifetime,” said Don, who started his career driving a Kenworth cabover for his father, be-fore starting his own com-pany in 1982. “The T680 is the most driver-friendly truck I’ve ever driven. I was astonished with the truck when I drove it for a month. And I still am. It is so quiet, and the interior and exterior fit-and-finish is just exceptional. When I was done driving the truck,

it was the first time in my career where I wasn’t thinking to myself, ‘I wish this was there, or this was positioned here.’ This Ken-worth was cut right.”

According to Chris, the company was so sold on the T680 that the company ordered 75 units with the 76-inch sleeper. The trucks, purchased through MHC Kenworth – Cedar Rapids, are powered with the PAC-CAR MX-13 engine rated at 455 hp, and use primarily Eaton Fuller Advantage Se-ries 10- speed automated transmissions.

“That was the largest single order we’ve made in the last 10 years. We really felt good about how drivers would react,” Chris said. “And reaction was even better than we expected. When we brought in new trucks in the past, we al-ways have had drivers who would say, ‘No thanks, I’m happy with the truck I’m in.’ This was the first time where every driver who was offered the new truck

took the keys. Each driver wanted the T680 – not one wanted to stay with the truck they were driving.” With a solid base of quality drivers, and an experienced support staff in all depart-ments including Don’s son Andrew managing Cus-tomer Service, Don Hum-mer Trucking, has doubled in size over the last five years. The company’s ta-gline is Delivering Value, which Chris said “conveys that customers should ex-pect the best overall value when partnering with Don Hummer Trucking. Safety is never compromised and the company consistently ranks at the top of our cus-tomers service expectations for truckload carriers.”

“We plan to continue with expansion where it makes sense, and an es-sential component to any growth is our ability to attract and retain quality professional truck drivers,” continued Chris. “We’re well below the industry average in driver turnover. We pay well and have al-ways offered nice equip-ment. Running a premium truck like the Kenworth T680 shows drivers that we are serious about providing them with comfortable, safe and efficient equip-

ment to do their job. There is no shortage of positive comments on the trucks from the quietness, to the layout in the sleeper with the rotating table, to all the room for storage. We want to be the carrier of choice for our customers and pro-fessional drivers, so it only makes sense to offer the best equipment available.”

Chris also said the Ken-worth T680 is driving home bottom-line results. “Fuel economy is the best we’ve ever seen with brand new trucks, and compared to other aerodynamic trucks we’ve bought in years past, we’ve seen a 4 per-cent bump* with the T680. That’s big. We see it as a combination of the T680’s aerodynamics and the fuel efficiency of the PACCAR MX-13 engine.”

According Chris, reli-ability and a reduction in downtime is also critical to success for the com-pany. “It’s another reason we went with the MX-13. We wanted an integrated drivetrain and wanted any issues with the truck or en-gine to be handled through a single source, eliminating the need to manage addi-tional vendor/supplier rela-tionships. And, that’s what we get with MHC Ken-

worth and its footprint (67 dealerships in 16 states). MHC is a growing entity, just like we are, and they share the same culture and drive to be the best. Our professional drivers and experienced staff deliver value for our customers and MHC and Kenworth deliver value for us.” b
