As the wet season approaches, we are offering a limited number of demonstrations of this product we call Track Grip. But we understand that only the most progressive contractors will be will-ing to use it. Track Grip is an investment in your machine, in your work, and in the safety of your operator. Track Grip will allow you to climb steeper terrain and provide significant rollover protection in slippery hillside conditions. It will give your machines the abil-ity to work in new places and make you more money!

This is the OLD way of pre-venting your machines from slipping down a slope. How much time do you waste installing and un-installing them? Do they offer much rollover protection?

WHAT TYPE OF CONTRACTOR ARE YOU?

If youre a true progressive thinker, well have our people come out, supply and install them for you, and let you put them to work. You can invite your favorite dealer representative to come watch, so when the time comes, they can put a set on your other machines too.

Watch the video at www.trackgrip.caand call Michael at 1-800-263-2309.

    New C-Series Combination Grapple

The NEW Terex Finlay I-100RS direct drive 860mm x 860mm (34 x 34) hori-zontal impact crusher with variable speed gives opera-tors unprecedented levels of fuel efficiency and pro-duction in both recycling and quarrying applications. The robust and proven Ter-ex chamber gives excellent reduction ratios and high consistency of product shape.

The machine features an on-board 2.44m x 1.2m (8 x 4) single deck screen for sizing and recirculat-ing oversize material back to the crushing chamber. The sizing screen can be

quickly detached for appli-cations that do not require resizing or recirculation of materials for further processing. The I-100RS features hydraulic folding of all conveyors provid-ing rapid set-up times and easy point to point moves when operating on mul-tiple sites.

The machine features an advanced electronic control system that moni-tors and controls the speed of the rotor and regulates the heavy duty vibrat-ing feeder (VGF) with integrated pre-screen to maintain a consistent feed of material into the im-

pact chamber for optimal crushing conditions. Ma-terial from the integrated pre-screen can be diverted to a stock pile via the op-tional by-pass conveyor, or it may join the crushed product on the main belt. The standard hopper ca-pacity of 2.3m (3.01yd) places the machine at the forefront in this competi-tive market sector.

With tracked mobility this machine is capable of working in the most de-manding of environments and features a rapid set-up time.

The machine features a heavy duty chassis, with convenient access points and ladders to all service areas.

Startup time for the Terex Finlay I-100RS is minimal, with the ma-chine ready for crushing in less than 15 minutes. The heavy duty crawler tracks, and optional radio remote control unit, make on site mobility very easy.

A key additional benefit of the machine is the in-built hydraulic assist apron adjustment for the impact chamber. Key Features: Direct drive 860mm

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) recently announced its decision to proceed with its Carmon Creek project in Alberta, Canada, expected to produce up to 80,000 barrels of oil-per-day (bpd). Carmon Creek is a thermal in situ project that is 100 per cent Shell owned and will be part of the com-panys broader production, refining and marketing business across the full val-ue chain in North America.

Im pleased were mov-ing ahead with this impor-tant project, said Lorraine Mitchelmore, Executive Vice President Heavy Oil. Shells Peace River oil leases represent a signifi-cant development opportu-nity. Our decision to invest

in Carmon Creek has been carefully studied with the goal of designing a project that is competitive from a commercial, technological and environmental per-spective.

At Carmon Creek, Shell combined its global procurement reach and technology with access to local expertise to de-sign a facility that is both commercially viable and minimizes environmental impacts. This design in-cludes a novel well deliv-ery system and the use of cogeneration that will also feed power into the Alberta grid; enough to power half a million homes. Once the project is up and running

the aim is to virtually elim-inate the need for freshwa-ter use for steam genera-tion through recycling of water produced with the oil.

    Carmon Creek will build

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) recently ex-pressed its support for the agreement in princi-ple for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) be-tween Canada and the European Union. One of its measures will re-sult in the elimination of quotas and tariffs of up to 10% on imports of wood based panels.

We welcome this trade deal and appreci-ate the governments strong push in the area of freer trade, said the President and CEO of FPAC, David Lindsay. The prosperity of the forest products indus-try relies on strong ex-ports.

Last year the Canadi-an forest sector exported more than $1 billion of wood, pulp and paper products to the EU mem-ber states. This is 4% of total exports of Canadi-an forest products mak-

ing Europe the 3rd larg-est international market for the sector. The larg-est importers of Cana-dian forest products in Europe are the United Kingdom followed by It-aly, Germany, the Neth-erlands and France.

The forest products industry is aiming to in-crease its revenues by $20 billion through new markets and new inno-vations as part of our Vision2020 initiative, says Lindsay. The sec-tor is working hard to diversify its markets be-yond the United States and we encourage the government to continue advocating for increased trade in regions such as Europe and Asia. These areas provide good mar-ket opportunities for our industrys traditional and future products.

FPAC also urges speedy ratification by govern-ments and prompt imple-mentation of this land-mark deal. b

With 47 terminals plus additional buildings, en-ergy management at BC Ferries means overseeing widespread locations, each with different infrastruc-ture and needs.

For the corporation's Energy Manager, Gillian Nishida, it all adds up to a tremendous opportunity for energy savings.

In the past year, Nishida has spearheaded energy ef-ficiency projects that total annual savings of about 335,000 kWh enough to power the equivalent of 31 homes. The project list includes: A lighting upgrade for

the parkade at the Horse-shoe Bay terminal, re-placing 190-100W high pressure sodium fixtures with 58W LEDs,

A heating retrofit for the Tsawwassen terminal that included the use of radiant heat ceiling tile,

Four lighting upgrades through the Power Smart Partner Express pro-

    gram, Two Self-serve Incentive

Program (SIP) lighting retrofits, one in Horse-shoe Bay and another at the Fleet Maintenance Unit in Richmond.

Energy efficiency upgrades offer increased comfort as well as savings

In Tsawwassen, Nishida replaced forced air heaters in a welding shop with ra-diant heaters at each work-station. Radiant heaters warm the person, instead of the entire shop, making workers more comfortable while reducing actual heat-ing needs.

Next, baseboard heat-ers in the tollbooths were replaced with radiant heat ceiling tile. "It looks ex-actly like regular ceiling tile," says Nishida. "But it radiates heat on the ter-minal attendant instead of heating the air in the booth, which is important because they are frequent-ly opening and closing the window to talk to the cus-tomers.

"We also installed pro-grammable thermostats to maintain heating set points in the toll booths."Drawing power from the energy manager network

Nishida credits BC Hydro's Energy Manager Education Series with mak-ing her job a bit easier.

The workshops pro-vide energy managers from across B.C. with information on the latest trends in energy manage-ment and Power Smart program updates. They also offer an antidote to

energy manager isola-tion: an opportunity for energy managers to meet one another and share ideas.

Nishida is a regular par-ticipant. "There are usually two or three [workshops] a year," she says. "They give program updates about changes to the Power Smart incentive programs that [energy managers] may or may not have heard about. It's also good to get to see what your peers are doing."

Nishida says the most valuable part is engaging and networking with the other participants. All aboard: behaviour change team helps reduce energy use

Fortunately, Nishida isn't alone in her goal to save energy at BC Ferries. While she plans infrastruc-ture and equipment proj-ects, BC Ferries' energy conservation team works to get employees onboard and celebrate energy-sav-ing successes.

"Our workplace en-ergy conservation team, the Watt Now team, has been very important in educating our employees about responsible en-ergy use," says Nishida. "They focus on behav-ioural and operational best practices to reduce energy usage."

The team uses news-letters, contests, games, interactive days and other initiatives to engage em-ployees and empower them to take action in their work area.Continued improvement: energy studies

BC Ferries has contin-ued work on the Tsaw-wassen recommissioning and optimization project, and has completed energy studies at Swartz Bay ter-

    year.With all that BC Fer-

ries has done to date, Nishida says it's hard to pick which project has been the most valuable.

"We've probably saved the most with

lighting retrofits many different-sized projects all put together add up," she says. "And we have lots more potential for radiant heating in toll-booths and near baggage doors." b

Metro do Porto is one of this years win-ners of the prestigious Veronica Rudge Green Prize in Urban Design from the Harvard Gradu-ate School of Design, Harvard University. The prize recognizes the in-frastructure projects positive contribution to the world heritage city of Porto and the quality of life of its people by con-necting previously segre-gated communities.

Together with consor-tium partners, rail tech-nology leader Bombar-dier Transportation was responsible for the deliv-ery of a full turnkey light rail system for Metro do Porto. This included the manufacture of more than 100 Bombardier Flexity light rail vehicles, project management, in-house design, installa-tion and commissioning of a Bombardier Cityflo 250 rail control solution.

The system, in opera-tion since 2002, connects seven municipalities in the metropolitan area of Porto and intercon-nects with the citys bus and railway networks. It transports approximate-ly 55 million passengers annually, a number that

has grown steadily year on year. The system has four lines, totaling 70 km with 63 over ground and 14 underground stations. It combines mixed traffic (road and rail) sections, separate full signaling sections with 7 km of tunnels and single line sections equipped with passing loops and block signaling. 72 Flexity 100 per cent low-floor trams and 30 Flexity light rail vehicles provide a total capacity of more than 20,000 passengers per hour per direction.

The future success of urban centres rests on re-defining the way people move within and between these expand-ing social and economic hubs. In order to sustain economic growth while ensuring the health and quality of life of citizens, cities all over the world are looking for smarter and more environmen-tally friendly forms of

mass transit compared to the historic dependence on individual car trans-portation.

Bombardier is at the forefront of developing cost-effective technolo-gies that improve total vehicle performance to move more people and goods than ever before efficiently within and between urban centres. Cold weather does fun-ny things to construction equipment. If you plan to operate your skid steer throughout the winter, here are a few tips to keep in mind when preparing for cold weather. Starting in Cold Weather

There are many cold starting options for skid steers, including glow plugs, block heaters, grid heaters, and starting fluid (ether). We recommend and build glow plugs into our skid steers, which are more efficient at heating the cylinders for better starts. Other solutions will work as well, but its im-portant to note that either can be particularly harsh on the engine if used ex-cessively.

If you do have a skid steer with glow plugs, do not turn the engine until the glow plug indicator on your control panel has gone out. That light indi-cates that it is still heating, and is only ready to crank when the light goes out.

The battery is another critical factor. Perform a load test on the battery before the cold weather hits to ensure it operates at full strength under load. A strong battery will have sufficient amps to crank the starter in cold tempera-

tures. Replace a weak bat-tery before getting caught short. Keep a trickle charge on the battery if neces-sary to ensure it remains fully charged and ready to crank the engine. Perhaps equally as important is the location of the battery. Bat-tery placement closer to the starter allows for a shorter battery cable and less draw on the battery.

Some skid steer models also offer a master electri-cal shut-off switch (stan-dard on CASE machines). This prevents any draw from occurring when sit-ting idle important during winter months. Monitoring Fluids

Its important to check both the level and the con-dition of engine coolant, which lowers the freezing point of water-based liq-uid. Ensure the coolant is at the proper level and that the mixture matches the manufacturers specifica-tions. The coolant system should also be pressure-tested.

Lighter viscosity engine/hydraulic oil is typically recommended during win-ter months. It allows the oil to flow more quickly to the engine when its cold-start-ed. Specially formulated engine and hydraulic oils are also available for opera-

tion in the northernmost re-gions with extremely cold temperatures (Canada, Alaska, the U.S. northern plains). Users should con-sult manufacturers recom-mendations when selecting coolants and oils for winter operation.

Companies that plan on operating throughout the winter should also top off the fuel tank at the end of each day to prevent con-densation. Keep it Greased

Keeping all grease points well-greased helps keep out moisture and dirt, and prevents rust, freezing and seizing. These points should be checked daily. Stretch its Legs

If you do plan periodic use throughout the winter, but do not intend on shut-ting it down completely, make sure to take the ma-chine out and exercise it every couple of weeks to

Line Creek Coal Mine has recently received ap-proval to move into the $62-million Phase 2 ex-tension of their mining operations. This will ex-tend the mine life by 18 years until 2032, keeping approximately 500 full-time people working at the mine.

Line Creek produces metallurgical coal used to manufacture steel. The Phase 2 project will produce an estimated 3.5 million metric tonnes of clean coal per year, and a total of 59 million met-ric tonnes over its mine life. The expansion in-cludes two open pits, a waste rock dump, a seepage water collection

system and a major wa-ter treatment plant.

Mineral exploration and mining are impor-tant economic drivers for British Columbia. The production value of B.C.s mining industry was approximately $8.3 billion in 2012.

Since the BC Jobs Plan was released, two new mines are in op-eration, and five more are under construction or permitted. The Prov-ince also has approved seven major expansions of existing mines. The BC Jobs Plan goal is to open eight new mines and expand nine others in British Columbia by 2015. b

Telescopic conveyors exist in the industry to-day for one reason; tower cranes. The first telescopic stacker was invented in 1992, when the under-standing of cantilevered structures was applied to the complex design of the original telescopic stacker.

Design in many indus-tries has often used the principal, if something doesnt work, beef it up - add more steel. When designing screening plants, crushers and loaders this may work. However, this is not the case when design-ing telescopic conveyors. The modern tower crane design has not effectively changed over the last 45 years for one good reason; the strength to weight ra-tio has effectively been realized. Intelligent design and a proper balance of strength & weight continue to be the key elements of success.

Telescopic technology was initially designed for the aggregate industry to

stockpile larger volumes and eliminate segrega-tion, compaction and con-tamination. It enables you to stockpile larger vol-umes than conventional radial stackers within the same footprint and ef-fectively reduces the use of fuel and costly equip-ment such as loaders and dozers, originally used to restore out of spec ma-terial. You can also stock-pile 30% more material in the same area.

In conventional stock-piling, material segrega-tion occurs, as fines remain centered and coarser mate-rial falls along the outside to the bottom of the pile. Telescopic technology stockpiles materials in flat concentric rows to reduce the challenge of segrega-tion. Zero segregation pro-grams are available when segregation is of the utmost importance.

In conventional stock-piling, material that falls in one position from vari-able height will result in

a degree of compaction. Conventional forms of dis-tribution also use front-end loaders or dump trucks to re-blend out-of-spec mate-rial, which compacts the material. Telescopic tech-nology eliminates the chal-lenge of compaction by maintaining a low constant pile height from the head pulley of the discharge conveyor to the pile. The conveyor also distributes product evenly in a con-trolled area without dis-rupting natural settling of the material. Conventional methods result in material bounce and roll-off.

In addition to com-paction, the use of heavy machinery poses a risk of contaminating material with dirt, oil, steel, or other undesirable objects. Such machinery is also related to negative environmental impacts linked to emis-sions and fuel consump-tion. In an age where prod-uct quality is driving the force behind the success of an underlying business, contamination cannot be tolerated. Competitors gen-erating higher quality will inevitably increase their market share as custom-ers look to their product for greater value. b
