The contribution of plastic pipe systems to sus-tainable development will be one of the key discus-sion points at the upcom-ing Plastic Pipes XVII Con-ference and Exhibition in Chicago. Evidence from en-vironmental assessments carried out by independent technical institutes will

underline the advantages of these systems. Further-more, recent sustainable developments for miti-gating flooding, seismic events, creating high-yield horticulture and transform-ing desert landscapes will be considered.

Stephen Boros, VP Engi-neering for Pipelines Plas-

tics, LLC and Chairman of the organizing committee of the event is convinced that the 500 participants expect-ed from over 35 countries will profit from the experi-ence. “Our conference and exhibition is a truly global event. Much has happened since we first considered the aspects of sustainability

and what that meant to the technical development and promotion of plastic piping systems.”

“As we look at ways to rehabilitate our aging un-derground infrastructure and protect our dwindling natural resources, the push towards recycling coupled with greater awareness of the long life environmen-tal benefits of plastic pipe, continues to transform our industry. Conference delegates are drawn from the complete business and technical spectrum of an industry that generates a global turnover in excess of USD 100 Billion. The conference offers major utilities, system designers, engineers, pipe and fitting manufacturers, resin com-panies and other suppliers the unique opportunity to come together to learn the latest developments as well as network with each other and drive the industry fur-ther.” Low Environmental Impacts

In Europe, a wide range of plastic pipe systems have been assessed for their en-vironmental impact and carbon footprint. Commis-sioned by The European Plastic Pipes and Fittings

Association (TEPPFA), these technical studies that em-brace Life Cycle Assessments will be presented at the Chi-cago conference. They will confirm the low environ-mental impact of plastic pipe systems compared to non-plastic pipe systems.

The scope and scale of flooding and drought throughout the world have prompted innovative plas-tic pipe solutions to man-age and harvest rainwater under such increasingly unpredictable conditions. Conference attendees will learn how plastic pipe technology is now being used in Australia to offset extensive flooding. This solution was applied fol-lowing an overflow of the Morwell River that caused USD 400 million of dam-age to infrastructure and put the electricity supply to over one million homes in Victoria at risk. Case evidence from China and India will also show how innovative pipe solutions such as trenchless technol-ogy are offsetting the worst effects of flooding. Sustainable Goals

As the World Football Cup recently took cen-tre stage, few spectators would’ve been aware that

in 2006, the host nation of Germany employed plastic storm water boxes below the playing field to avoid water logged conditions above. In Chicago, partici-pants will appreciate how these devices are now be-ing widely used in other countries to prevent flood-ing, land erosion and sub-sidence as well as harvest precious rainwater for use in times of drought.

Plastic pipe technol-ogy is also being used as a sustainable solution to maintaining nationwide utility services in the event of earthquakes and trem-ors. Evidence from recent events in New Zealand and Japan will underline just how the flexibility of plas-tic pipe systems can with-stand the shocks and how more rigid pipe materials are subject to failure under such conditions.

Greening the desert from within may seem a fanciful idea. However, in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the countries that border the Sahara Desert desalina-tion has become a work in practice. Various approach-es are now being applied and results are both effec-tive and innovative. One

For stump grinding professionals who pre-fer the simplicity of tow-able stump grinders but are tired of constant belt adjustments and mainte-nance, Bandit Industries presents the Model 2600 and Model 2700 towable stump grinders.

These machines com-bine aggressive horsepow-er in compact, lightweight designs that makes stump grinding as easy as driv-ing to the jobsite. Available with numerous options and reliable, beltless hy-drostatic drive, the Model 2600 and Model 2700 each are exceptional perform-

ers for rental companies, municipalities, and stump grinding professionals.

“The Model 2600 and Model 2700 towable stump grinders are very easy to tow, and their simplicity is still very popular with many of our customers,” said Christopher Smith, Marketing and Communi-cations Director for Ban-dit Industries. “The wide swing arc and adjustable tongues really help these machines to grind even large stumps without need-ing to reposition the whole unit, and the hydrostatic drive is definitely a big plus when it comes to lowering maintenance costs.”

With hydrostatic direct-drive there are no belts, jackshafts, bearings or as-sociated parts to maintain, making the operation and maintenance of these ma-chines extremely simple. Power application with hydrostatic direct-drive is typically much smoother than traditional belt driven stump grinders, making

the Model 2600 and Model 2700 a breeze to operate from swing-out control panels or optional radio re-motes.

The Model 2600 features a 61-horsepower diesel en-gine, and the Model 2700 features a 97- or 115-horse-power diesel engine.

Both machines ride on a rugged Torflex axle and go after stumps with swing arcs greater than five feet. Both come standard with the Revolution cutter wheel, and both feature telescoping tongues to help fine-tune their position at the stump.

Bandit Industries is a global manufacturer of wood processing machin-ery, ranging from indus-trial-grade hand-fed and whole tree wood chippers, horizontal grinders, stump grinders, forestry mow-ers and other specialty processing equipment. All equipment is manufac-tured by specialized teams at the company’s head-quarters near Mount Pleas-ant, Michigan.

AECOM Technology Corporation (NYSE:ACM), the world’s #1-ranked engineering design firm, recently announced that GrandLinq, a Public-Pri-vate Partnership (PPP) in which it participates, has been awarded a contract by the Region of Waterloo in Ontario.

The GrandLinq PPP will design, build, finance, op-erate and maintain a new at-grade Light Rail Tran-sit (LRT) system between the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener. The contract is expected to be worth ap-proximately US$23 million to AECOM.

As the PPP’s design lead, AECOM is respon-sible for the project’s detailed design, includ-ing track, civil, utilities, architecture, structural, landscape, systems and environmental services. Known as ION, the LRT system consists of 11 miles of track, 19 stops, 13 traction power stations and a new operations and

maintenance facility to house and service the ION vehicle fleet. A focal point of the project will be the construction of a major grade separation for a fu-ture intermodal transit fa-cility. Other notable scope elements include two new rail structures and public infrastructure works.

“We are proud that AE-COM will help advance the region’s transit system by providing integrated design management, as well as environmental and community-outreach services,” said Michael S. Burke, AECOM President and Chief Executive Of-ficer. “We look forward to leveraging AECOM’s expertise — working with our partners to deliver a convenient and environ-mentally friendly trans-portation option to resi-dents.”

Work on the project has already commenced. Project construction is ex-pected to be completed by 2017. b

Coinciding with Na-tional Environment Week, Built Green Canada issued a challenge to municipali-ties across the country to encourage green building as part of their sustainabil-ity building policies.

Municipalities incent-ing sustainable building with a program like BUILT GREEN reduce the load on civic infrastructure such as water, electrical, waste, and so forth. These sav-ings can offset a rebate or incentive and may provide a competitive edge from one municipality to anoth-er. Moreover, incentives may encourage builders to develop in a particular community and with more builders in a community, revenue for permits and ongoing property taxes in-creases.

Built Green Canada rec-ognizes municipalities may not be able to favour one green building program over another and, there-fore, encourages munici-palities to include BUILT

GREEN programs as an option to endorse. The col-lective efforts of govern-ment, builders, developers, homeowners, and others focused on sustainable res-idential construction make a difference to environ-mental conservation, and ultimately leave more for future generations.

This year’s National En-vironment Week theme, “Strengthening Our En-vironment Today for To-morrow,” and the Govern-ment of Canada’s action to preserve and enhance the natural environment through science, such as maintaining air and wa-ter quality, is well suited to Built Green Canada. “While energy efficiency is a fundamental compo-nent of our programs, in-tegrating the EnerGuide label through Natural Re-sources Canada, we go beyond energy efficiency, moving the industry to-ward a more holistic ap-proach to sustainable building practices,” said

Jenifer Christenson, Built Green Canada Executive Director. It’s an approach that includes the preserva-tion of natural resources, reduction of pollution, ventilation and air quality, and the improvement of home durability.

The call out began in Edmonton, where Built Green Canada’s head of-fice is located. It’s also where Mayor Don Iveson has a long-term view to the environment and has been a strong proponent of the city’s “The Way We Green: Environmental Stra-tegic Plan,” a plan that has won provincial and federal awards and has led to the development of green com-munities such as Oxford, a demonstration of the City of Edmonton’s commit-ment to sustainable design and environmental build-ing practices. “We work with a number of progres-sively minded municipali-ties, builders, and service providers across the coun-try focused on a sustain-able future,” said Christen-son. “We want to recognize those committed to build-ing greener and intend that other municipalities make the same proclamation in the years ahead.” b

Hyundai Construc-tion Equipment Americas, Inc., a leading earth mov-ing and material handling equipment manufacturer, is pleased to announce the addition of three new wheeled excavator models, the R140W-9A, R180W-9A and the R210W-9A, to their 9A series product line. These machines will provide operators with en-hanced features and bene-fits compared to prior mod-els including a certified Tier 4 Interim engine upgrade, improved hydraulics, in-creased operator comfort and added durability. The R140/180/210W-9A mod-els are mid-size excavators providing plenty of power and mobility to get the job done and are ideal for ex-cavating projects, road and utility work and demoli-tion.

Hyundai has powered each of these 9A wheeled excavators with low emis-sion, low noise, Cummins QSB6.7 Interim Tier 4/Stage IIIB engines. Elec-tronically controlled fuel

injection and diagnostic capabilities add to the en-gines’ efficiency and ser-viceability. Other innova-tions such as the variable speed fan clutch, two-stage auto decel system and the economy mode help to conserve fuel and reduce environmental impact. Plus, operators can choose between three unique en-gine modes — Power, Standard and Economy — which enable the machine to switch between full power and reduced fuel consumption according to the user’s preference.

To achieve optimum precision, Hyundai rede-signed the hydraulic sys-tem on each of these mod-els to provide the operator with super fine touch and controllability. Improved pump flow control mini-mizes fuel consumption and improved spool valves are engineered to provide more precise flow to each function with less effort. Enhanced hydraulic valves, precision-designed variable volume piston pumps, fine-

touch pilot controls and enhanced travel functions make for smooth and easy operation. Boom-down flow regeneration and con-trol valve technology are also newly improved. An auto boom-swing priority feature automatically and continuously looks for the ideal hydraulic flow bal-ance for the boom and swing motions of the ma-chine to maximize perfor-mance and productivity.

In addition to pow-er and efficiency, the R 1 4 0 / 1 8 0 / 2 1 0 W - 9 A wheeled excavators feature a new and improved travel system. An auto cruise con-trol system reduces opera-tor fatigue by maintaining a fixed speed when driving distances. A new auto ram lock system is available to improve operating safety by locking or releasing the ram cylinder according to the operating mode. An optional forward/reverse travel pedal control allows operators the choice of us-ing the travel pedal control while in work mode or the lever while in control mode. A new creep speed travel system is also pro-vided to improve manoeu-vrability and fine control.

Hyundai has improved the structure strength of the 9A series cabs with stronger but slimmer tub-ing for optimum safety. Low stress, high strength steel forms a more durable upper and lower frame. Structural integrity of these three models was tested by way of FEM (Finite El-ements Method) analysis and long term durabil-ity tests. An optional ROPS (Roll Over Protective Struc-ture) cab can be equipped to further enhance operator safety.

The enlarged cabs on the R140/180/210W-9A models provide excel-lent visibility. The newly designed cabs were con-ceived for more space, en-hanced operator comfort and a wider field view. Special attention was given to a clear, open and conve-nient interior with plenty of visibility on the machine

surroundings and the job at hand. This well-balanced combination of precision aspects put the operator in the perfect position to work safety and securely.

In addition to enhanced safety and visibility, opera-tors will enjoy being able to fully customize the cab of the R140/180/210W-9A excavators to best fit their needs. Operators can easily adjust the seat, console and armrest settings to the de-sired comfort level. Hyun-dai has integrated the seat with the console to reduce operator fatigue and adjust-able air suspension comes standard. New joystick consoles are adjustable in height by pushing a single button.

Hyundai’s engineers made sure that the 9A cabs include many amenities that decrease stress and increase comfort. Some of these features and benefits include heated seats, ad-

ditional space, enhanced climate control system for optimum air temperature, an advanced audio system with USB player, AM/FM stereo, and MP3 capabili-

ties. A Smart Key System is an optional add on feature that allows the operator to start the ignition with the push of a button.

The R140/180/210W-

9A excavators come stan-dard with a newly designed 7 inch, colour LCD Display cluster with easy to read digital gauges for monitor-ing temperature, fuel lev-

els and other maintenance items. The simplified de-sign allows the operator to easily adjust engine power and work modes, set boom

The demo is part of the largest hospital restruc-

turing project in the city’s history, and is one of the largest demo projects cur-rently underway.

Demolition work began in early 2014, and is ex-pected to be completed by January 2015. The demo-lition contract is valued at $9.2 million, and is jointly funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, London Health Sci-ences Centre, and the City of London. The hospital has engaged a number of companies to oversee the

work, with ProGreen De-molition Ltd. taking the lead on demolishing the site.

The municipality still owns much of the land, and the remaining acre-age owned by the hos-pital will be transferred back to the city after the decommissioning is com-plete.

“We want to be respect-ful of the neighbourhood, and leave the site as it was given to us,” says Dipesh Patel, Vice President of Facilities Management at London Health Sciences

Centre. “It’s going to look like park land when we turn it over to the city.”

No decisions have been made regarding the ulti-mate use of the site once demolition is complete. However, early municipal redevelopment plans in-clude a mix of residential and commercial buildings on the attractive piece of land situated next to the Thames River.

The demolition includes the destruction of a nine-storey building, under-ground tunnels, and the

plosions, or wrecking balls used at any time. Trucks are employed to haul the material off site, and are restricted to pre-defined routes. This strategy will minimize disturbances and dust for the residents who live near the project.

With cameras installed on site, ProGreen offers viewers an ongoing oppor-tunity to watch the demo unfold in real time with live Internet updates every 15 minutes at www.ucit online.com/southstreet. b

On May 3rd, Trees On-tario, along with volun-teers, community mem-bers and planting partners, dug, stomped and planted thousands of seedlings in nine separate communities across Ontario during a se-ries of half-day tree plant-ing events.

Now in its sixth year, the annual Community Plant-ing Weekend was hosted by Trees Ontario and sup-porters CAA South Central Ontario, CAA North & East Ontario, Enbridge Gas Dis-tribution, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Ontario Wood.

In total, the day drew together more than 1,000 attendees and resulted in a total of nearly 5,000 new, native trees planted! Plant-ing sites included London, Windsor, Ottawa, Niagara, Midhurst, Kingston, Kitch-ener/Waterloo, Peterbor-ough and York Region.

“The tree planting events were not only a fun way to spend the day with family and friends, but were also a great way to create a local legacy and a greener tomorrow which will benefit current and future generations. CAA South Central Ontario is proud to have sponsored the events and is commit-ted to giving back to the communities in which our members live and work,” said Cindy Hillaby, VP Membership & Automotive Services, CAA SCO.

Increasing large-scale planting across Ontario is part of Trees Ontario’s mandate. The benefits of trees in rural and urban spaces are crucial not only to our ecosystem, but also to human health. Trees clean our air, improve local water supplies, establish wildlife habitat and pro-vide a buffer against the ef-fects of climate change.

“Trees enhance the vi-

tality of our communities and what better way to showcase this than to di-rectly involve families and youth through environ-mentally engaging activi-ties such as this,” said Rob Keen, RPF, Trees Ontario CEO. “It’s been wonderful seeing stewards of all ages join Trees Ontario, along with its partners, in taking such an active lead in en-suring a greener future for everyone.”

“Enbridge Gas Distri-bution is proud to sup-port organizations like Trees Ontario that help build healthy, vibrant and sustainable communi-ties,” said Kerry Lakatos-Hayward, Director of Cus-tomer Care, Enbridge Gas Distribution. “In addition to the trees planted today, we’re proud to be work-ing with Trees Ontario to plant 50,000 trees in the community this spring to thank our customers who have signed up for paper-less billing.”

Trees Ontario and its partners commend the con-tribution of all the families and community groups in-volved in this year’s plant-ing activities.

A special thank you also goes out to our plant-ing event partners: CAA South Central Ontario, CAA North & East Ontario, Enbridge Gas Distribution, TD Friends of the Environ-ment Foundation, Ontario Wood, Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority, Friends of Lemoine Point, Grand River Conservation Authority, Peterborough Green Up, City of Windsor, Essex Region Conserva-tion Authority, The County of Simcoe, Niagara Parks Commission, Regional Mu-nicipality of York, Upper Thames River Conserva-tion Authority and Rideau Valley Conservation Au-thority. b

As Road Supervisor for Toole County, Mont., Lloyd Omdahl understands the importance of power and versatility in his equip-ment. With nearly 2,000 square miles of land—about the size of Dela-ware—and just over 5,200 residents, it’s a county that needs to make the most of its equipment purchases.

When the county need-ed a new Motor Grader last year, Omdahl decided to give the CASE 885B AWD (all-wheel drive) a try.

“It was the middle of winter,” Omdahl recalls. “We were impressed with

our initial test, so the first day we had the machine we put it on a road job with our other three machines and it outworked every grader we had out there.”

The geography of the county often requires the road crew to come up with creative ways to get the job done with the equipment on hand. Currently, Toole County is using their CASE motor grader for grad-ing and rebuilding roads, ditching, snow removal, bulldozing and more. The all-wheel drive design helps improve tractive per-formance, steering and side

draft control in challeng-ing conditions, including snow, mud and sand.

“You name it,” Ohm-dahl said. “We’ve used it for just about everything we do.”

On a recent project, the county needed to build a road across alkali flats. “We brought out these boulders that were about three feet in diameter and we used its dozer blade to push them into the flats so we could build a road across it. Then, since we didn’t have the crawler along to push the scraper, we just used the motor grader to push it

and it turned out great.”Omdahl said he was

particularly impressed with the power of the machine and the productivity he was able to achieve.

“The power to weight ratio and gearing is great,” Omdahl said, “and that translates to more pro-ductivity. Head to head, it moves more dirt than our other graders. It just buries our other machines.”

One of the reasons the 885B AWD was able to ex-ceed Omdahl’s expectations is the redesigned multi-radius involute moldboard, which cuts, mixes and rolls material more efficiently than a constant-radius unit.

“The new moldboard design has a sharper angle on the bottom instead of the same radius through-out,” Omdahl noted, “and that really cuts the dirt, pulls it up and rolls it much faster than we’re used to.”

In addition to significant increases in productivity, the improved cutting and turning power of the mold-board design also provides Omdahl with better fuel ef-ficiency.

Additional features that Omdahl found useful are the front articulation and

all-wheel drive. He said the all-wheel drive is particu-larly useful for keeping the front-end stable in ditching jobs. The front articulation, he said, was a departure from the rear articulating machines he was used to, but that he quickly warmed

up to its benefits.“The front articulation

took a little getting used to,” he said, “but once we got used to it, we found that it gives us a better turn ra-dius and when we’re ditch-ing we use it quite a bit to offset the front end.” b

The newest full service hotel with meeting rooms in south-east New Bruns-wick is shooting for the stars, and General Manager Michelle Boudreau is tak-ing no chances on earning a 5-star rating for her facil-ity.

Thanks to a custom-built standby generator, Hôtel Shediac is now the only full service hotel that can offer assured power to maintain its complete range of quality guest ser-vices through any power outage.

“As a coastal town, we are well aware of the po-tential for power outages,” Boudreau says. “High winds and lightning strikes in the summer can black out the power for a four-block area here. And this winter, we have seen ice storms take out the power, too.”

Boudreau explains that the principal owners of the hotel also own other prop-erties in the region, and are accustomed to installing a standby generator to main-tain essential powers. For their new hotel, though, they took the plans a step further.

“Most hotels have back-up power only for their property management sys-tem: for the computers that manage hotel finances, res-ervations, and such. But we wanted standby power to maintain 100% service capability.”

The hotel’s “power as-surance” plan was tested soon after opening in De-cember last year, when an ice storm knocked out all power to the neighbour-hood. The Hôtel Shediac’s kitchen and Irish pub, in-room climate control, pool and fitness centre all con-tinued normal operation without missing a beat. “Our guests never even no-ticed!” says Boudreau.

The process for choos-ing the right generator system was as meticulous as the rest of the design plan. The contract was extended to the Atlantic office of Sommers Genera-tor Systems in Dieppe, NB. The choice was based on a combination of system fea-tures and aftersale service.

“Having a one-stop point of contact was very important to us. Past ex-perience with equipment purchases showed us that you often start with a sales person, who hands you off to a regional office, and then the contacts and the information keeps chang-ing. With Sommers, we had one person, someone educated on the product who could tell us what we needed to know, all the way through the project.”

Pierre Gallant, the Man-ager of Sommers’ Dieppe location, knew the manage-ment staff of the Hôtel She-diac from previous projects and understands their ser-vice expectations. He took

an active role in advising on the type of system and features the hotel would re-quire to maintain their own service standard. As Bou-dreau recalls, “Pierre edu-cated us on what the gen-erator could do and made the purchase trouble-free. On the construction side, we had to ramp up with a new project manager half-way through the project. However, working with Pierre, all the answers to our questions were always the same; much simpler than with some of our past suppliers!”

Along with the power profile and control systems, sound attenuation was a key factor in specifying the Sommers system. While the hotel is located in an area zoned for commercial development, neighbours to its back are residential. Like many towns today, the local population is aging, and many seniors’ homes are in the same area. Som-mers offers the industry’s most advanced sound at-tenuation packages, allow-ing them to operate under the most restrictive noise requirements, including senior care facilities and hospitals.

The staff at the She-diac were most impressed when the Sommers gen-erator began a test cycle recently. According to Boudreau, “The system was 18-minutes into the test before anyone noticed that the generator was running – we had to look inside its enclosure to be sure!”

While the impact of the standby power system is unseen to guests, Bou-dreau is already seeing its effect on her marketing of the hotel. The decision to provide 100% power as-surance was a strategic move by the management to ensure 100% quality service assurance to guests and event planners. “Once we bring it up, this system casts all other facilities in the region in a different light,” she reports. “The risk of a power outage is al-ways there, but at the Hôtel Shediac, it doesn’t matter. Your plans can go ahead no matter what’s happen-ing outside.” b
