In bulk hauling, tons are the name of the game. And for Walpole Inc., a bulk hauler with 240 com-pany-owned tractors, get-ting more for less is pay-ing dividends.

Were always inter-ested in shaving weight to haul more payload, but need to temper that with performance and durabil-ity, said Keith Walpole, whose grandfather started the south Florida-based company in 1952. What weve seen with our Ken-worth T880s and pre-pro-duction PACCAR MX-11 engines is very promising. Were now standardizing on the T880, and the MX-11 certainly has the oppor-tunity to be a large part of our operation.

According to Walpole, his T880 52-inch sleeper trucks with the PACCAR MX-11 each save more than 1,300 pounds in weight compared to the previous truck and sleeper combination the company was running in the same

application. To start, the PACCAR MX-11 engine is 400 pounds lighter than a 13-liter engine. Walpole also saves the follow-ing weight by specifying the 10-speed Eaton Fuller Advantage(TM) transmis-sion (165 pounds), wide-base tires (504 pounds), plus aluminum fifth wheel and air tanks (251 pounds).

Were running five PACCAR MX-11 units down in Okeechobee, with occasional runs into Geor-gia and South Carolina, said Walpole. The engines are specd at 430 hp with 1,350/1,550 lb-ft of torque, and replace MX-13 engines with the same horsepower, but with 1,550/1,750 lb-ft of torque. From what our drivers tell us, they cant tell a big difference in pow-er performance. The units are working beautifully. Plus, were seeing a bump in fuel economy with the MX-11. So, its easy to see why were high on this engine less weight and even better fuel economy.

A fourth-generation company Keiths daugh-ter, Rachel, son Bryan, and nephew Ryan are also involved in the business Walpole began steady growth after deregulation in 1980. We ventured into other states and ex-panded our ag-hauling with pneumatic and dry bulk tankers, Walpole said. Then, about 20 years ago, we opened a terminal in Birmingham to support our growth in that territory.

Walpole works with several Kenworth dealers to support his operation, but main truck orders are made through Kenworth of Jacksonville.

Hauling agriculture feed has been a mainstay for Walpole, dating back to when his grandfather started the business. He purchased a truck to han-dle the delivery of feed for a local feed co-op, Walpole recalled. A few years later, my dad took over the company and

began to buy and sell feed to local dairies. Weve al-ways had a philosophy of not trying to be the big-gest we just wanted to be the best at what we do. And, do what we say at a fair price. Be-ing a multi-generational owned company is pretty rare these days and were very proud of our heri-tage. Today we continue to service several of the original farms that my grandfather delivered to back in the early days. Thats a real sense of pride.

For longer hauls, Wal-pole trucks put on about 140,000 miles a year, while regional trucks av-erage between 110,000 and 120,000 miles. We gross out in weight in our tankers and were still getting excellent fuel economy, said Walpole. Our running fuel econ-omy (taking into account idling and operating the PTO while unloading) is coming in as high as 7.4 mpg so our driving fuel economy would be even higher.

The company has long been a Kenworth customer, but with the T880, Kenworth has made

monumental changes that have turned heads throughout the compa-ny, Walpole said. The fit and finish, along with the ride and reduction in road noise is unbeliev-able, he said. And, our drivers are raving about the trucks. They really are happy behind the wheel and thats important to us. The driver shortage isnt going away.

Whats more, Walpole said the trucks project the high-quality image the company is looking for. The trucks promote our services, and they do help recruit drivers to our com-pany. Were very particu-lar about our hires. We only want the best and those type of drivers tend to gravitate toward com-panies running the best equipment.

It would be very hard to get me out of the T880, said Willie Jackson, who is Walpoles most senior driver with 39 years at the company. I started when we only had three or four trucks in the fleet and have driven several dif-ferent brands and models over the years. But, this is the truck for me right here it rides smooth and is

    comfortable.Jackson also said a new

feature in the T880 (also available in the T680), is a pre-trip inspection switch, which makes his job a whole lot easier. All I do is flip the switch and my rigs lights and blinkers, even brake lights, turn on. That way I can walk around and do my pre-trip inspection and see if all the lights are working.

According to Jackson, the combination of a nice truck to drive, and fam-ily atmosphere at Wal-pole means a lot to him. I dont think youll find many owners as ap-proachable as Keith I can always go in and talk, as can all our drivers, he said. We have a tight knit bunch.

The flagship Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck with the PACCAR MX-13 engine was selected as the 2015 ATD Truck of the Year by a panel of commercial trucking jour-nalists and a professional driver. The T880 was ranked high for exception-al handling, power, torque and outstanding visibility from the drivers seat. b

Alberta and Saskatch-ewan will have lower ex-ports this year due to de-pressed oil prices but will rebound in 2016 through a partial price recovery and volume gains, accord-ing to a new global export forecast released by Ex-port Development Canada (EDC). Manitoba will also see declines in its energy exports in 2015, but gains in other important sectors will offset that and give it a modest increase in overall exports. All three provinces will enjoy export growth in 2016.

According to the Global Export Forecast Fall 2015, Albertas overall exports will slump 23 per cent in 2015, due to a 30 per cent drop in exports of energy, which accounts for more than three-quarters of the provinces exports. Sas-katchewan, which relies on energy for about 40 per cent of its exports, will also see a significant decline 43 per cent in that sec-tor, but strong growth in

exports of fertilizers and agri-food will greatly mod-erate the effects on its over-all export performance. Manitobas energy exports will be down 24 per cent this year, but as energy is a much smaller share of ex-ports than in the other two provinces, the effect on its overall exports is much less.

Theres no question that low oil prices are hav-ing a major impact on ex-ports from Western Cana-da, especially Alberta, said Peter Hall, Chief Economist at EDC. But Saskatchewan and Manitoba are showing how provinces with a more diversified range of exports can soften the blow caused by declines in one sector.

EDC says Saskatch-ewans agri-food exports, which roughly equal the value of its energy exports, are set to rise 10 per cent in 2015, while fertilizer ex-ports will increase by 38 per cent. In Manitoba, the greatest positive contribu-tion to its exports will come

from shipments of pharma-ceutical products, along with gains from manufac-turers such as New Flyer Industries which is provid-ing coach buses to several U.S. state governments. Al-bertas non-energy exports are also seeing a slight increase 1 per cent in 2015 and will post a further 4 per cent gain in 2016.

Manitoba and Sas-katchewan are also more diversified than Alberta in the markets they sell into, said Hall. While the Unit-ed States accounts for more than 90 per cent of Alber-tas exports, its only about two-thirds of the market for the other two.

A rebound in energy ex-ports in all three provinces next year will also help them raise their overall ex-ports. Alberta will see a 20 per cent increase in energy exports and a 15 per cent increase in overall exports; Manitobas energy exports will climb 15 per cent and overall exports by 6 per cent; and Saskatchewan will enjoy a 13 per cent increase in energy exports and a 5 per cent jump in overall exports.

EDC is Canadas lead-ing provider of small busi-ness financing and insur-

ance for companies with sales or business outside of Canada. Some of its services include the Ex-port Guarantee Program to help exporters access more financing, Foreign Exchange Facility Guaran-tee to help exporters man-age foreign exchange risk, and Political Risk Insur-ance that can cover up to 90 per cent of losses from

    political risks in foreign markets.

EDCs economics team includes some of Canadas leading trade experts, who share their knowledge free-ly with Canadian compa-nies looking to grow their international sales and help them manage the associat-ed market risks. Its semi-annual Global Economic Forecast addresses the

latest global export condi-tions, including providing perspectives on leading economic trends and ex-port strategies to help Ca-nadian companies of all sizes maximize their export growth. The forecast also analyzes a range of risks for which exporters should be prepared. b

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence Ma-cAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Min-ister Ron Kostyshyn an-nounced an investment of nearly $380,000 for a potato processing plant in Carberry to increase effi-ciency, reduce waste and support the sustainable growth of Manitobas po-tato industry.

The governments in-vestment, provided under Manitobas Growing For-ward 2 Growing Value pro-gram, will be used to install new and innovative equip-ment at the McCain Foods Canadas facility. The plant processes about 430 mil-lion pounds of Manitoba-grown potatoes every year, mostly into French fries. The upgrades will reduce potato and canola oil waste by 900,000 pounds and 800,000 pounds per year, respectively.

The governments in-vestment represents half of

the total equipment cost. McCain Foods Canada has invested more than $30 million in other upgrades to the Carberry facility over the last 10 years, including a $23 million waste wa-ter upgrade. This potato processing plant employs about 220 people, with another 10 positions to be created over the next three years as a result of the new equipment.

Manitoba is Canadas second-largest potato pro-ducer behind PEI, sup-porting 120 potato grow-ers and employing 1,500 full-time and casual work-ers. In 2013, 70,000 acres of potatoes were grown in Manitoba valued at about $192 million. 80 per cent of potatoes processed in Manitoba are exported to the U.S. making this crop a valuable trade commod-ity.

The Growing Value program provides finan-cial assistance to existing agri-businesses that need

to make changes to adapt to market forces and envi-ronmental considerations, to increase their ability to compete in domestic and international markets.

The federal and pro-vincial governments are investing a total of $176 million in cost-shared pro-gramming in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provin-cial-territorial policy frame-work to advance the agri-culture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets.

Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment also supports the Manitoba gov-ernments goal of creating a $5.5 billion food processing industry by 2022, which is currently valued at $4.95 billion.Quotes

The Government of Canada recognizes that Canadian food processors must continually adapt and upgrade to remain compet-itive. This investment will help Manitoba potato pro-cessors deliver innovative food grown in sustainable ways to Canadians and

The Canada and Man-itoba governments are expanding the provinces network of automated weather stations after in-stalling 17 new stations in 2015, Federal Agricul-ture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Min-ister Ron Kostyshyn an-nounced today.

Manitoba has a total of 61 automated weather stations operated by the provincial government which provide timely, detailed information use-ful to Manitoba farmers, free of charge. By 2018, the agro-meteorology program will expand to 84 stations.

The minister noted climate change and moisture management as issues raised in the Agriculture Risk Man-agement task force report, which was re-leased in early 2016. An expanded network will give farmers important

information on soil con-ditions, risk assessment for crop diseases and insects, and support decision-making for the crop-residue burning program.

These automated sta-tions are located in ar-eas that best represent the climate of the region. They are solar-powered and communicate wire-lessly, allowing them to be set up in remote and rural areas. Measure-ments of air tempera-ture, relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction and soil tem-perature are collected, verified and posted to the provincial website hourly. Data from these weather stations will also be used to enhance flood and drought fore-casting, precipitation maps, and monitoring severe weather.

Funding for the ex-pansion of the agro-me-teorology program comes from Growing Forward 2,

a five-year, federal-pro-vincial-territorial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competi-tive in world markets.Quotes

The Government of Canada is proud to support the expansion of automated weather station networks. Hav-ing enhanced access to weather and climate information will help farmers make important decisions affecting their farm. Federal Agri-culture Minister Law-rence MacAulay

This sophisticated equipment has already been extremely useful to farmers throughout the province, providing them with critical infor-mation for crop and land management decisions. As the network contin-ues to grow, we are able to provide information, focusing on specific de-tails for more locations. Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Devel-opment Minister Ron Kostyshyn. b

Peterbilts lightweight, full-featured 58-inch sleeper is now in production for the companys flagship aerody-namic Model 579 and voca-tional Model 567. Available in low- and mid-roof con-figurations, the new sleeper can reduce weight by up to 100 pounds.

Peterbilts 58-inch sleep-er is ideal for short- and regional-haul operations where less weight and a shorter wheelbase are criti-cal, said Robert Woodall, Peterbilt Assistant General Manager of Sales and Mar-keting. It includes all of the amenities found in Peter-

bilts larger sleepers, includ-ing ample storage, driver comforts and exceptional fit and finish for quality rest and off-duty time.

The new sleeper in-cludes a full-length door to help facilitate loading per-sonal gear from outside the truck. Additionally, full-length, integrated sleeper extenders minimize trailer gap and improve aerody-namic efficiency.

The sleeper was de-signed with extensive re-search and customer inter-views to help ensure every inch of space was consid-ered for a layout that was

both practical and premi-um, said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt Chief Engineer. Operators will enjoy the full-length mattress and abundant storage areas, in-cluding the cabinets, under bunk and back wall.

The new 58-inch sleeper is designed with an open, spacious feel that drivers expect from a Pe-terbilt sleeper. Its thought-fully engineered.

Other features include a television mount, refrigera-tor and microwave shelf.

Newhouse added that of-fering the 58-inch sleeper in both low- and mid-roof con-figurations further increases its versatility to meet specific application requirements, including flatbed and tanker operations. b

GE Oil & Gas (NYSE: GE) has agreed to acquire Advantec, a leading pro-vider of subsea interven-tion equipment and servic-es, to boost the companys capabilities to offer cost-ef-ficient products and servic-es to customers worldwide.

The purchase is part of GE Oil & Gas efforts to ad-dress the challenges faced by its customers operating the growing number of ma-ture subsea fields, and the companys broader strate-gy to expand its position as a leading provider of sub-

sea production equipment and services solutions for full life-of-field manage-ment.

Advantec will operate under the existing name and management team as part of GE Oil & Gas Sub-sea Services & Offshore

division. As such, it will continue to supply prod-ucts and services directly to existing and new clients.

Financial terms of the agreement to acquire the company, headquartered in Stord on the west coast of Norway, were not dis-closed. The two companies are targeting to complete the transaction by year-end 2015, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

GE Oil & Gas is current-ly one of Advantecs larg-est customers, utilizing its core capabilities in electro-hydraulic subsea controls

equipment, system integra-tion as well as engineering and fabrication to support GEs services, offshore portfolio and installed base of subsea equipment. For example, Advantec is a leading supplier of Instal-lation WorkOver Control Systems (IWOCS), includ-ing a fleet of IWOCS rental units. IWOCS are a key enabler for a wide range of subsea intervention equip-ment.

With the acquisition of Advantec, we are ex-panding our comprehen-sive portfolio of services, so we can provide added value to our customers at a time when the industry requires more effective solutions. The acquisition will enable us to acceler-ate growth in our subsea services operations by helping us build a leading well intervention equip-ment supply and rental business alongside accel-erating our integrated so-lutions offering, said Rod Christie, President and CEO of GE Oil & Gas, Sub-sea Systems & Drilling.

While GE Oil & Gas plans to use this acquisi-tion to expand its presence in the subsea well interven-

tion sector, Advantecs pri-vate equity majority owner Norvestor has found the right match from both a fi-nancial and future growth perspective.

We are excited to an-nounce our agreement with GE, which we believe is the right company to help us realize the full potential of our well intervention con-trols technology to support existing and new clients in the offshore oil and gas industry, said Magnar Aaland, CEO of Advan-tec. GE has the global re-sources and vast expertise in subsea controls to take our technology to the next level.

Since Advantec was established in 2005, the company has grown from 20 to 370 employees with facilities in Norway, the UK, Lithuania, and the US. The Advantec acquisition will provide GE Oil & Gas with an integrated global supply chain to address the surging demand for IWOCS and associated technol-ogy, complementing GEs existing subsea production equipment and services portfolio. b

Bauma 2016 to occupy all 605,000 square me-ters of space at the trade-fair center. For the first time ever, companies on the waiting list can have themselves listed in the Bauma directory.

It is the largest trade fair in the world with re-gard to space, and every three years, it is the high-light for the construction, building machine and mining industries: We are talking about Bauma, which takes place in Mu-nich for the 31st time from

April 11 to 17, 2016. The upcoming fair features a new service: For the first time ever, companies that are on the waiting list and had not yet been assigned space can have them-selves listed in the Bauma directory.

The companies then participate without stand space, although they will be included as addition-ally represented compa-nies in the online exhibi-tor directory and will be listed under their respec-tive product categories. They also have access to a special lounge, so they can make appointments and hold meetings there during the fair. In addi-tion to lead management, they can also book other services such as electron-ic press compartments or advertising alternatives.

One reason for this step is that the upcoming Bau-ma is already booked to capacity; there are already waiting lists for several sectors. Naturally, Klaus

Dittrich, CEO of Messe Mnchen, is pleased with the feedback from inter-ested companies, although he also understands the related difficulties: Just like in 2013, we have been unable to satisfy all the re-quests for space or for in-creases in space. Natural-ly, the company does what it can to allow as many companies as possible to adequately participate in the fair. Unfortunately, it has reached its maximum capacity with regard to space. Dittrich explains the idea behind the new par-ticipation alternative: We want to give companies that we have been unable to accommodate in the past an opportunity to call the Bauma communitys attention to themselves and their products and to make contacts during the fair.

So far, a total of 17 com-panies have signed up to be part of the Bauma 2016 digital network. For ad-ditional information about this new service, please con-tact the Bauma Exhibition Group by telephone (+49 89 949-20265) or by e-mail ([email protected]). b

Hino Trucks has ex-panded its INSIGHT platform to create a con-nected vehicle for all cus-tomers. The expanded Hino INSIGHT platform delivers three key ser-vices to owners: INSIGHT Telematics powered by Telogis, INSIGHT Remote Diagnostics (INSIGHT RD) and INSIGHT Case Management (INSIGHT CM) powered by Deci-siv. This entire platform will be standard fit across all 2017 model year mod-els. Hino is the first OEM to provide Telematics, Remote Diagnostics and Case Management as a standard feature.

Our market is trans-forming at a pace unseen in years past. Customers are realizing the benefit of receiving real-time data in order to compete and man-age their fleet in the most efficient manner. This is not only large fleets, but also owner-operators and small business own-ers. INSIGHT is the first comprehensive platform that focuses on fleet effi-ciency through INSIGHT Telematics powered by Telogis, maximizing up-time through INSIGHT Remote Diagnostics, and providing streamlined/

transparent communica-tion between customer, dealer and OEM through INSIGHT Case Manage-ment powered by Deci-siv, said Glenn Ellis, Vice President of Marketing, Dealer Operations and Product Planning for Hino Trucks.

Hino INSIGHT Telematics powered by Telogis delivers real-time mission-critical data to customers on vehicle and driver performance to help them lower total cost of ownership and improve operational efficiencies. Additionally, INSIGHT Telematics provides Hino specific functionality like DEF level, regen activity and peer benchmarking. Electronic Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) service is also included as part of the first year of service.

INSIGHT Remote Diag-nostics, provides real-time notifications to Custom-ers, Dealers and Hino of active diagnostic trouble codes. This integrated di-agnostic software reduces downtime for critical re-pairs by providing stan-dardized repair instruc-tions, required parts list and streamlining the ser-vice process by locating

the nearest dealer with availability and parts on hand.

INSIGHT Case Man-agement picks up these codes and provides start-to-finish communication updates during the service event process by using software and personnel at Hino Trucks Diagnostic Centre to analyze and cre-ate a plan to address the trouble code. A customer is able to see the different stages of the repair pro-cess supplying quicker re-sponse time for approvals and notifications, reduc-ing downtime for service and repair events. Addi-tionally, INSIGHT Case Management will provide automated reminders for planned maintenance so the customer can sched-ule a maintenance ap-pointment at their conve-nience.

All 2017 model year conventional and cab-over Hino trucks will have the INSIGHT plat-form standard across all models and includes a one-year subscription to INSIGHT Telematics, and 5-Year coverage for INSIGHT Remote Diag-nostics and INSIGHT Case Management. The added value of INSIGHT strengthens Hinos com-mitment to providing the lowest cost of ownership throughout the owner-ship lifecycle. b

Following extensive truck and engine testing, Mack Trucks today signed off on the use of renew-able diesel fuel in all Mack engines. Renewable diesel fuel delivers performance similar to diesel refined from petroleum, but with several additional custom-er benefits, including re-

duced greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, as well as decreased mainte-nance costs.

As the availability and customer requests for renewable diesel fuel in-crease, we worked to en-sure its compatibility with our engines, said Stu Russoli, Mack highway

and powertrain products marketing manager. This approval gives Mack cus-tomers who seek to reduce their environmental foot-print an additional choice when it comes to alterna-tive fuels.

Similar to conventional biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is derived from biomass

feedstocks, including animal fats and oils. However, un-like biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is produced us-ing a different process and maintains physical proper-ties and performance similar to petroleum diesel, meeting the same ASTM D975 stan-dard.

Renewable diesel fuel offers several environmen-tal benefits to customers, including reducing par-ticulate matter. A life cycle analysis of renewable die-sel fuel conducted by the California Air Resources Board also demonstrated

reductions in greenhouse gases by 15 to 80 percent, depending on feedstock source used. Customers can also save money with renewable diesel fuel, as it requires fewer mainte-nance costs compared to other alternative fuels.

The addition of renew-able diesel fuel adds to Macks alternative fuel offerings. The Cummins-Westport ISX12 G natural gas-powered engine is cur-rently available in Mack Pinnacle DayCab model. The Mack LR and Mack TerraPro cabover models also offer natural gas op-tions with the availability of the Cummins-Westport ISL G engine.

Mack Trucks has ap-proved the use of renew-able diesel fuel in all Mack engines. With performance similar to petroleum diesel, renewable diesel fuel deliv-ers additional benefits for customers, including re-

duced greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, as well as decreased mainte-nance costs.

Dedicated to quality, re-liability and total customer satisfaction, Mack Trucks, Inc., has provided its cus-tomers with innovative transportation solutions for more than a century. To-day, Mack is one of North Americas largest produc-ers of heavy-duty trucks, and Mack trucks are sold and serviced through an extensive distribution network in more than 45 countries. Mack trucks and diesel engines sold in North America are assem-bled in the United States. Mack manufacturing loca-tions are certified to the internationally recognized ISO 9001 standard for qual-ity and ISO 14001 standard for environmental manage-ment systems. b

The Canada and Mani-toba governments are in-vesting more than $125,000 in new equipment to help a local hemp processor transform hemp straw into absorbent pellets for kitty litter, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence Ma-cAulay and Manitoba Ag-riculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced re-cently.

Hemp Sense Inc. in Gil-bert Plains will manufac-ture a natural, dust-free, environmentally-friendly kitty litter, tapping into a market worth $2.6 billion in North America. Hemp straw can absorb up to five times its weight in water, making it perfect for litter. It may also have potential to help clean up oil and chemical spills.

Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment supports Manitobas Bio-product Strategy and its goal of generating $2 bil-lion in annual revenue by 2020.

Between 20 and 25 per cent of the hemp grown in western Canada is in Manitoba. Unused hemp straw does not biodegrade quickly, so this new, ab-sorbent product will create a market for excess hemp that might otherwise go to waste.

The federal and pro-vincial governments are investing $176 million in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territo-rial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping produc-ers and processors become more innovative and com-petitive in world markets.Quotes

The Government of Canada is pleased to sup-port new innovation that transforms agricultural crops into new non-food consumer products. This type of innovation will not only help farmers find new markets for their crops, it will contribute to environmental sustain-

ability, while strengthen-ing our rural Canadian economy. Federal Agriculture Minister Law-rence MacAulay

Hemp Senses innova-tive product converts straw that would likely otherwise be burned into a high-end green product. The Mani-toba government is proud to support our provinces thriving hemp-based agri-business. This product will reduce the industrys car-bon footprint while also growing the rural, green economy. Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Ru-ral Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn

The equipment added by this program will mean additional processing flex-ibility and capacity for Hemp Sense to manufac-ture and market diverse new products. We are cre-ating the first hemp prod-ucts for the absorbent mar-ket in North America and we have additional product plans in the near future which could bring added income to hemp farmers looking for new uses for their crop. President, Hemp Sense Inc. Lyall Bates. b

The Observatory of na-tional and world market trends for the next two years was outlined at Ve-ronafiere during the first edition of SaMoTer Day, a training and guidance event focusing on oppor-tunities and trends in the building and construction machinery market.

The earth moving ma-chinery market can expect the recovery to start in 2016. Progressive resumption is forecast next year on a glob-al scale which will be con-solidated in 2017, with total sales of 880,000 units, up by 33% compared to estimated results for 2015. There will be a favourable trend over the next two years for the sector in Italy which, follow-ing the vertical collapse of 2007 (-72%), seeks to close 2017 with 12400 units, up 44.8% over the performance in 2015.

These forecasts for the sector were presented by Veronafiere through the new SaMoTer-Veronafiere Outlook event organised in collaboration with Prom-eteia, an international economic consulting and research firm. The results of the Observatory analysis were presented yesterday during the first SaMoTer Day, the training and guid-ance event focusing on opportunities and trends in the building and con-struction machinery mar-ket in Italy and world-wide (www.samoter.it).

The initiative is one of the run-up events leading to the appointment with

the 30th edition of SaMo-Ter (22-25 February 2017) - Veronafieres triennial show dedicated to the con-struction equipment sector held in conjunction with Asphaltica, the bitumen and road infrastructure event organised together with Siteb (Italian Bitumen, Asphalt and Road-Building Association), and Transpo-tec Logitec, the road trans-port and logistics appoint-ment by Fiera Milano.

SaMoTer Day provides companies with an effec-tive market intelligence tool that helps them respond to rapidly changing interna-tional business scenarios, said Giovanni Mantovani, CEO & Director General of Veronafiere . The sig-nals coming from the earth moving sector for the next two years are encouraging and we are consequently already working to make SaMoTer 2017 even more useful for companies who want to catch and benefit from this recovery.

The 2017 edition of Sa-MoTer, in addition to its exhibition and commercial aspects, will also focus on the management and pre-vention of environmental emergencies, with themat-ic focus meetings dealing with on land consolidation sites and the Government #italiasicura plan which envisages investments of over 7 billion euros and 3500 different projects.

The Inaugural Confer-ence of SaMoTer Day saw the CEO & Director General of Veronafiere joined by Michele Turrini, President of Siteb, Giuseppe Garri, Transpotec Logitec exhibi-tion manager, and Roberto Paoluzzi, Director of Cnr-Imamoter (National Re-search Council Institute).Samoter-Veronafiere Outlook: Annual Report And Forecasts For The Future

The global market for excavators, concrete plant, drilling, crushing and asphalting machinery, cranes and site vehicles is still affected by the verti-cal collapse (-48%) in the two-year period 2008-2009. 2015 was still a tough year of a global scale: in the first

nine months of the year, 61,000 earthmoving fewer earth moving machines were sold (-11%) com-pared to the same period in 2014. In terms of macro-ar-eas, growth was only seen in India (63,000 units) and North America (148,000 units). Matters were wors-ened by the bursting of the Chinese bubble (-37%) that in 2011 took one third of all international sales and the situation in Rus-sia (-70%). Despite the positive development trend for construction activity, Centro Studi Prometeia es-timates that the year will close with a loss of 9%.

The good news for the sector again according to the analysis in the SaMoTer-Veronafiere Outlook will come with the new year and continue in 2017 with a slow re-alignment of growth in the construction field (880,000 units sold; +33% over 2015). In addition to mature markets such as North America and Japan, in Europe the main input comes, in order, from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Among emerging countries, India takes first place, fol-lowed by Latin America.

As regards Italy, after continued acceleration in the last five quarters, Prometeia estimates a final figure for 2015 of 8500 new machines sold (+27%) which will rise to over 12,000 in 2017 (+44.8% compared to 2015).

The Samoter-Vero-nafiere Outlook also analy-ses the trend in the con-struction sector. Forecasts for India one of the most dynamic markets for resi-dential construction and civil engineering alike suggest it should close 2015 at +5.6% of investments, climbing further to +6.9% in 2016 and +7.4% in 2017. North America is making tentative recovery, with an increase of 5% ex-pected for 2016 and also 2017. China over the next two years, on the other hand, should stabilise at an average growth rate of

4%, while Latin America will only post positive fig-ures (+4.1%) at the end of 2017 and will still suf-fer from ups and downs: while Brazil and Venezuela are down, the situation in Mexico, Argentina and Co-lombia is improving.

Estimates for Western Europe are more cautious: +2.2% in 2016 and +3% in 2017. Going into more de-

tail for the old continent, Germany in 2016 will be driven by non-residential construction, thanks to a three-year investment plan amounting to 15 billion euros. The United King-dom, on the other hand, is ready to launch a national infrastructure plan worth 120 billion euros in the two-year period 2016-2017. Moving eastwards, Rus-sia continues its negative

performance, with reduced investments in all construc-tion sectors: only as of 2017 will one see the first signs of growth, largely because of the onset of work worth 17 billion euros planned for the 2018 World Cup.

In North Africa and the Middle East, finally, there are business opportunities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Iran.

On the Italian front, af-ter the still negative closure expected for 2015 (-1.5%),

positive figures will return in 2016 (+1.2%) and 2017 (+2.3%). In 2016, the new stability budget will give new impetus to in-vestments in public works thanks to the release of 1 billion euros in the stability

pact involving local coun-cils, joined by 500 million euros for school buildings and a further 8 billion eu-ros from the European in-vestment plan for Italy. b

Paul Theodorakos, Equipment Manager for Robindale Energy and its associated com-panies, readily admits that dock operations and material handlers were new to him when his company acquired an existing dock op-eration in Donora, on Pennsylvanias Monon-gahela River in 2014.

Were in the coal min-ing business and, in my 39 years of experience, I never needed to unload barges, says Theodora-kos. A 1990s vintage excavator, modified for material handling, came with the Donora proper-ty. But it wasnt capable of handling the volume of coal we anticipated. I immediately started making phone calls, do-ing research to know

what type of equipment would be best for off-loading coal barges. All signs directed me to Sen-nebogen.Seeing a Sennebogen 875 R-HD in action sealed the deal

A trip to the Charleston Bulk Transfer (CBT) facil-ity operated by Maybank Industries Group in South Carolina was in order. Lee Gibson of Gibson Machin-ery, one of Sennebogens longest standing distribu-tors, joined Theodorakos and his team to watch CBTs recently acquired Sennebo-gen 875 R-HD in operation. Located on the The Charles-ton Bulk Transfer facility, which is located on the Coo-per River moves upwards of 12,500 tons of coal per day from barge to shore. This convinced Theodorakos that a similar machine would be

ideal for his operations with Donora Dock LLC.

Our host, Turner Fa-bian, the President of CBT was most accommodating he just bragged about his companys 875 up and down, recalls Theodora-kos. In this case, the ma-chine bore out his words. I was impressed with a lot of its features, and especially its Green Hybrid system.

The large third hydrau-lic cylinder mounted be-tween the two main boom lift cylinders on the 875 R-HD is the centerpiece of the new Green Hybrid en-ergy recovery system de-veloped by Sennebogen. It captures power when lowering the boom in order to apply it again with the next lift. Sennebogens ad-vanced design utilizes the firms well-proven hydrau-lic expertise along with ac-

cumulators to maintain an extremely smooth opera-tion while cutting the re-quired energy by 30%. The resulting fuel savings are significant.Meanwhile back at the Dock

While Sennebogen completed assembly of their new Sennebogen 875 R-HD, the Robindale team returned to Donora to com-mence operations with a Sennebogen 850 M. The rubber-tired 850 M was fitted with a 5 yd. bucket.

By the time the 875 arrived this summer, the 850 had earned a permanent place in the Donora fleet, as a back-up and supplement to the larger machine.

After testing the 875 through a few hundred operating hours, the on-site manager of the Donora Dock, John Ross remains convinced that this ma-chine was the right choice. Swinging its 14 yd. coal bucket through several loading cycles per minute, he says the machine has

the potential to offload as many as 6 jumbo barges in a day.Producing more for less cost

Ross and the 875s lead operator were part of the team that visited Charles-ton and recommended the purchase of the machine. Its meeting all our tar-gets, Ross reports. We can unload a barge in 1 hours or less and, with two barges at the dock; we can unload them both without

having to move anything around. The operators just love the machines elevat-ing cab with its glass floor, and the excellent visibility it allows when the cab ex-tends out above the barges.

The 875 is very quick, very agile and stable. Its a well-designed machine.

But the biggest thing is the fuel! Ross continues. In 39 years, I never saw machines that big use so little fuel. Recalling the

43% saving in diesel costs that CBT has achieved in Charleston, the machine in Donora is right on track to produce comparable re-sults.

We spent a lot of time making this decision, look-

ing at other equipment, says Theodorakos. But this machine is the one thats really built to be a material handler. Were happy with our decision. b

In trucking theres a brotherhood. We share an identity. When we pull into a customer and see a long line-up of trucks, we look for one of us. When we pull into a truck stop we scan the parking lot for one of us. We meet thousands of trucks on the road every day, but we wave when we see one of us. As I pull into the yard tonight Im one of the last trucks off the road. I see the empty parking spaces of the trucks. One isnt coming home tonight. One of us isnt coming home tonight.

Those are a few of many memorable words by truck driver John Irish, a friendly acquaintance of fellow trucker Lindsay Findlay. Irish typed that entry into his Facebook page the night of Tuesday February 3, 2015. Just a few hours earlier, Find-lays truck had crashed into a guard rail on Hwy. 401 near Whitby and

flipped over on its side. Findlay was cut-off by an impaired driver, but rath-er than ensure his own safety by slamming the full force of his truck into the reckless drivers car likely causing a chain reaction that would send both vehicles dangerously into traffic the veteran Arnprior, Ont. trucker was able to limit the impact with quick maneuvering and responsive braking before eventually losing control and hitting the guardrail. He died at the scene.

For his heroic actions, Findlay was recognized posthumously at the On-tario Trucking Associa-tions annual executive conference in downtown Toronto with the 2015 Bridgestone-OTA Truck Hero Award. Each year, OTA and Bridgestone Canada recognize a pro-fessional truck driver who has demonstrated cour-age, quick thinking and

integrity in the face of an emergency. Findlays wife Sandy and his daughter Brittany were in Toronto last night to accept the award.

We are very proud for what he did. We are proud he saved the other driver and possibly more drivers on the road that night, says Sandy Findlay. That was just his instinct to put people before himself.

Added Derek Crosby, Findlays employer at D&J Transportation: A more inexperienced driver would have done some-thing different and per-haps more people would have been killed or seri-ously hurt. He was defi-nitely a hero. Even with-out this, he was a hero.

In the days after the crash Irish and dozens of other truck drivers ral-lied in the community of Arnprior to support the Findlay family, even or-ganizing a massive truck convoy at his funeral the lead truck carrying Lind-says casket to the church.

I think he would have absolutely loved being sent off that way, says his daughter, Brittany. They all came together for him that day. Its amazing that out of something so tragic could come something so beautiful.

In presenting the award to the Lindsay family, Paul Dalcourt, national account executive, Bridgestone Canada, explained how the definition of a hero is someone who sacri-fices him or herself for the greater good. b

Promoting sustainable forest management and having it recognized and rewarded in the supply chain from the local to the global level is a key prior-ity shared by the many delegates who attended the 2015 PEFC Forest Certifi-cation Week in Montreux, Switzerland.

Ben Gunneberg, PEFC Internationals CEO and Secretary General, opened the 20th PEFC General As-sembly with an empowering video and noted, As a grass-roots organization PEFC has an extremely important role to play in achieving the Sus-tainable Development Goals (SDGs), as we can deliver 14 of the 17 UN goals on the ground through our work with forest certification and forest-dependent communi-ties. The 17 goals are part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Devel-opment Summit in Septem-ber 2015 to end poverty in order to achieve sustainable development.

If we want to continue to grow a strong future for forests and the people that depend upon them, we must expand the reach and rel-evance of forest certification programs and better quanti-fy and communicate the re-sulting positive conservation and community
