There are some 4,000 trucking firms based

here, including three of the top ten commercial car-riers in Canada — Day & Ross, Sunbury and Armour Transportation.

As a key driver of At-lantic Canada’s trade-reliant economy, the region depends on a ro-bust trucking industry to ensure the smooth flow of goods to and from the region. How-ever, the industry has hit roadblocks that have slowed those big wheels, in some cases to a screeching halt.

“The trucking indus-try has gone through one of their toughest peri-ods during the last few years,” said Jean-Marc Picard, Executive Direc-tor of the Atlantic Prov-inces Trucking Associa-tion. “Not only was the economy slow, but truck-ing firms were faced with

many challenges such as increased costs and driv-er shortage. Costs were up in all areas from tires and equipment to trailer registration. Fuel is al-ways in the forefront of our costs but for the last few years, diesel wasn’t the only rising cost.”

Those costs have kept Francis Murray, Ex-ecutive Director of the South East NB Trucking Association, from licens-ing his truck since 2007. A truck driver for 19 years, it’s more profitable for him to get behind the wheel of another com-pany’s rig than his own. His association has 101 members — mostly dump truck operators heav-ily reliant on provincial road construction con-tracts — with a total fleet of 500 vehicles. Three years ago, the member-ship’s combined payroll was $2.3 million. In 2012,

that number dropped to $460,000. It was the slow-est season in the past de-cade and “the 2013 season is not looking too good,” Murray acknowledged. “It will be about the same. The government is cut-ting back on everything and anything and they’re jacking up the prices on everything else.”

A huge barrier to the growth of Atlantic Cana-da’s trucking industry is lack of workers, owing to changing demograph-ics and the outmigration of Atlantic Canadians to Alberta’s oilsands. “At-lantic Canada’s economy depends tremendously on the trucking industry and unfortunately today we are faced with a huge driver shortage,” Picard said. “Not only are we not recruiting nearly enough people to work in our industry but we are also losing them to Western Canada’s oil patch.”

To address the chal-lenge, APTA is devel-oping a strategic action plan to help meet its labour needs. The plan has two main goals: to enable small- and medi-um-sized enterprises to attract and retain work-ers, especially truck drivers, and to ensure training offered by pri-vate training schools and community colleg-es, is standardized.

Yet another obstacle for Atlantic Canada’s truck sector is cargo theft, a crime that has impacted and “alarmed” the region’s industry over the last few years.

There may be some bright spots on the hori-zon, however. “Natural gas is making its way to our industry and represents a huge opportunity,” said Picard.

While there’s no “in-frastructure yet in Atlantic Canada to service natural gas trucks and initial cost remains a huge obstacle, the benefit from an envi-ronment standpoint and fuel savings are huge for our industry,” he said. “Therefore, it’s important that we continue to pur-sue and get educated on it.”

As the initiatives of APTA show, Atlantic Can-ada’s trucking industry is determined to clear its hurdles and move forward, keeping those big wheels turning toward a brighter future. b

Advanced Drainage Sys-tems, Inc.’s (ADS) new-est distribution site has opened in Moncton, New Brunswick. The new Moncton yard is part of ADS’ on-going multi-million dollar capital investment program an-nounced in 2011 to add pipe production and inven-tory capacity. ADS has a network of 57 manufactur-ing locations worldwide, and now 29 stocking ser-vice yards.

“Moncton is critical to

this area because it is at the geographic centre of the Maritime Provinces, and is even called ‘Hub City’,” stated Ewout Leeuwen-burg, ADS Vice President of International Opera-tions. “We will make full use of its excellent trans-portation system including the rail network. Demand for our products to control storm water continues to rapidly increase, and ADS is keeping pace by estab-lishing local manufacturing and distribution centres in Canada. In January, for ex-ample, we opened a yard in Morrisburg to add ser-vice and supply specifically to the Ontario area.”

New Distribution Yard In Moncton For Advanced Drainage Systems

Houston Lake Min-ing Inc. is a mining ex-ploration company that is specialized in rare metals and actively ex-ploring for lithium, tan-talum, cesium, and ru-bidium by focusing on its high grade, 100% owned and optioned PAK Rare Metals Project in northwestern Ontario, Canada. our investment in a lead-ing exploration target in the high-grade, multi-element Pakeagama Lake pegmatite on the PAK Rare Metals Project”, said Trevor R. Walker, President of HLM. About the PAK Rare Metals Project

The Pakeagama Lake pegmatite has an exposed strike length of approxi-mately 200m with a width up to 150m at surface with mineralization that is open along strike, and at depth. In September 2012, HLM conducted a 91 sample channel sampling program on the exposed pegmatite by targeting distinct geologic zones. The results of the pro-gram have identified high grade lithium, tantalum, and rubidium with up to 4.74% Li2O over 15 me-tres in three distinct peg-matite zones, 14 meters of 192ppm Ta2O5 (including

270ppm over 6 meters) and 0.53% Rb2O in one of the zones. Within the next three to five weeks, HLM will begin receiving assay results from the Phase I, 6-hole, 1,000-meter dia-mond drill program that commenced in March. The intention of this first drill program is to deter-mine the orientation and thickness of the pegma-tite, to better define the pegmatite zonation, and to refine the mineralogical characterization of these zones by establishing their lithium, tantalum, cesium and rubidium po-tential. The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) presented its annual Spring Operations Seminar at the National Heavy Equipment Show, held at International Cen-tre in Toronto on April 18. Over 100 people attended including six students from local colleges who participated in OHMPA’s first annual Roads Schol-ars program.

Students Ryan Wilbee and James Hill of Fleming College, Jonathan Shus-ter and Travis Charters of Conestoga College, and Scott Hoddy and Darren Ellis of Georgian College were recipients of the first annual Roads Scholars award. Colleges selected students who displayed exemplary leadership in their respective programs and who expressed inter-est in the asphalt paving industry. The students at-tended the Spring Opera-tions Seminar and the Na-tional Heavy Equipment Show for free.

“The Roads Scholar Program was developed through OHMPA’s Plant and Paving Committee and is an initiative that we hope will help to bet-ter engage and educate young people about the industry as they are mak-ing career choices,” said Mike Deckert, Chair-man of OHMPA’s Plant and Paving Committee and Vice President of FLO Components. “We are extremely pleased at the number of colleges and students that were interested in the pro-gram. This is an excel-lent opportunity for the students to learn more about the industry and to network with industry leaders.”

Attracting young tal-ented individuals to our industry is vital to insur-ing a strong future,” said Mr. Burpee. “One such example that hits close to home for me is Darren El-lis who proved himself on a co-op term at Aecon and has since been hired full time because of his strong performance. That is just one example about what can happen when these partnerships are formed and the opportunities cre-ated for both student and employer.”

Larson Electronics re-cently announced the re-lease of a powerful and efficient pedestal work light that produces more light from less power than traditional incan-descent pedestal lights, while providing added versatility with magnetic mounting capabilities. The WAL-M-LED72-120 LED Work Light com-bines the power and portability of a pedestal mount LED work light with the versatility of magnetic mounting to produce an excellent work light that can serve in a wide range of appli-

cations with across the board effectiveness.

The WAL-M-LED72-120 LED work light is a compact and highly versatile lighting solution that produces 4,320 lumens of brilliant illumination in a wide flood pattern from only 72 watts of power use. This LED work light fea-tures an extremely dura-ble LED lamp mated to a three leg aluminum ped-estal mount fitted with three magnetic pads.

The LED lamp on this unit is a high output de-sign that produces over four times as much light

output as a 100 watt in-candescent lamp while using only three quar-ters as many watts. This lamp runs far cooler as well, and is waterproof and highly resistant to the effects of impacts or dropping, making it ideal for high stress locations such as industrial work places. With this LED work light, there are no worries with acciden-tal burns or bulb break-age or shattering should the lamp be dropped or knocked over.

As well as high pow-er, this lamp also pro-vides versatile opera-tion as well. The heavy duty aluminum pedestal mount acts like any typi-cal pedestal light. Work-ers can simply set the lamp down on a flat sur-face and power it on to

provide instant and pow-erful illumination. How-ever, three 200lbs grip magnetic pads mounted to each leg also allows operators to attach this light to metal surfaces such as tank ceilings or wall, effectively let-ting the light be used as an overhead or hands free area light in places where simply setting the light down is impracti-cal. The three magnetic pads provide a total of 600lbs of magnetic grip-ping force, ensuring the system will hold its posi-tion even when mounted to equipment or machin-ery where heavy vibra-tion or movement may be present.

Calgary Metal Recycling went looking for a better way to load rail cars, and found exactly what they wanted.

Calgary Metal Recycling Inc. has more than 85 years of experience in processing scrap metals, but an effi-cient way to fill open-top gondolas accurately has been a persistent challenge.

“Without having a rail scale, it’s been kind of tough,” Steve Goodzeck admits. “We have a buck-et-scale loader, but most of the material is not easy to handle with a loader. Be-fore, when we were load-ing the HMS, the loader couldn’t just go into a pile. One machine would

load the bucket, the load-er would pull the weight and dump it into a train car, then another machine would have to level the train car and spread the material around.”“Now we’ve eliminated two-thirds of that job”

The solution was a new wireless grapple scale man-ufactured in Sweden by Intermercato and marketed in North America by RMT Equipment. The Intermer-cato XW scale utilizes a strain gauge system that allows in-motion weigh-ing, without requiring the machine to pause in its loading cycle to record the load’s weight.

“It has sped up our shipping, there’s no doubt about it,” Goodzeck claims. “We’re shipping out cars faster; the weights are coming back accu-rately. It’s wonderful. We know what we’re shipping

and we’re maximizing the car’s capacity. That means we are also maximizing the profitability of the load. It’s probably letting us fill 2.5 times the number of cars in a day and we’re getting the right weights in them.”

Like most recycling

businesses that ship by rail, Calgary Metal Recycling often faced penalties and added costs caused by inac-curate loading. “We don’t want to be under-loaded, because then we’re paying more per ton. But if we are overloaded, they pull the

car into a siding down the line and you have to send an operator and a machine to go and take some mate-rial off. And you’re paying demurrage charges on that car while it’s waiting.”

“With this grapple scale, we haven’t had a prob-

lem with overloaded cars. We’re shipping the weights we want to get into the car. It depends on the material, of course: some material has less density, but some can easily go over, espe-cially shred, heavy HMS. And when you do, it’s costly.”

About a year ago, after searching the internet for a grapple scale that could re-ally do the job, Goodzeck learned about the Intermer-cato scale from a local specialist in productivity equipment, Mountainview Systems.

“The fellows from Mountainview were quite accommodating in helping us get it set up,” Goodzeck reports. ”We calibrated the scale once; then they were out again when we were a little bit off in the very be-ginning. Since then, there’s been no problem. We dou-ble-check periodically with some check blocks we use on our truck scale. “

Goodzeck says he’s es-pecially pleased that, while the grapple scale is much less costly than the rail scale, it is also very robust. ”I like the fact that it’s all enclosed in a nice tight case. We’ve done things that we wouldn’t recom-

mend doing with any kind of sensitive equipment but it has stood up.”

The XW scale is in-stalled by simply replac-ing the yoke of the grapple with the scale itself, which then serves as the coupler. At Calgary Metals, the scale is fitted to a Liebherr Type 75 grapple, operated by a 99,000 lb. Link-Belt X2 with a 55 ft. Young boom and stick. Operators are able to lift, load and spread all sorts of material normal-ly. When they’re not load-ing rail cars, they can turn to other tasks in the yard such as sweeping with a magnet or offloading cus-tomers.

“We have three opera-tors using the grapple scale. It required minimal train-ing and we have had good success,” says Goodzeck. ”They’re just using the ma-chine as a regular grapple in the yard. There are no signs of any complaints from the scale and we beat on it pretty hard. We also don’t have any wire to con-tend with or any transmit-ter problems or anything like that.”

As part of an ongo-ing effort to maintain the overwhelming positive environmental impact of landscaping, Landscape Ontario members have vastly limited their use of phosphorous in their fertil-izer blends for many years.

Landscape Ontario members are stewards of the environment and again have been leading the way for many years by educat-ing and demonstrating to others proper and safe use of fertilizer nutrients near waterways. Recent news reports have highlighted the damage phosphorous can cause to the Great Lakes, with runoff feed-ing algae blooms that kill aquatic wildlife.

However, while phos-phorous is an essential nu-trient for all plant growth, adequate phosphorous is already present in the soil and therefore is rarely used by professionals on home lawns. Landscape Ontario has directed that it should only be used in circum-stances where deficiencies exist, or when establishing a new stand of turf.

“Our members have been very proactive in limiting the use of phos-phorous in their lawn fer-tilizer mixes,” says Denis

Flanagan, Public Relations Director of Landscape On-tario. “The professional lawn care industry has made significant strides in improving the quality of fertilizer used on lawns, including the use of ultra slow release Nitrogen. Ad-vancements in slow release technology now allow pro-fessional lawn care provid-ers to apply lower rates of fertilizer, yet still maintain excellent plant health.”

Turfgrasses in lawns, golf courses, parks and sports fields provide measurable carbon sequestration as well as being major producers of oxygen for our environment. Continual improvements in seed technology are allow-ing professional lawn care companies and their cus-tomers to maintain good co-lour and health while using substantially less water and chemicals.

A recent comprehensive literature review complet-ed by Dr. Chris Murray at Lakehead University has shown that healthy turf-grass, properly maintained, is a significant benefit to urban water quality. The prudent use of fertilizer, correctly applied at the ap-propriate time has a mea-surably positive effect on limiting runoff in the urban

environment. A lush, green lawn has

problem with the X2 took the big machine out of ser-vice for repairs. The Cal-gary Metal Recycling crew simply moved the scale and grapple to another Li-ebherr material handler in the yard. As Goodzeck re-calls: “It was just 6 bolts on top, 6 bolts on the bottom to bolt into the Liebherr grapple, then two wires to connect in the cab. We were able to swap it out in a couple of hours and con-tinue to load rail cars.”

“Our goal here is to move as much material as possible, as fast as pos-

sible,” he continues. “The fewer times you have to handle it, the better. This grapple scale from RMT has worked wonders for us in solving that prob-lem. We’re doing it faster with less equipment, and we have had no overload problems since we started using it a year ago. One machine can go into the prepared pile, pick it up, weigh it, lay it into the train car, and spread it around. I would say that this piece of equipment has more than paid for it-self in the time we’ve had it.” b
