Fasting When I was studying for my degree in Spiritual Theol-ogy, one of my professors, Fr. Herbert Alphonso S.J., had a beautiful understanding of the ascetic discipline of fasting. He would say, “Fasting is not merely about physical mastery, but is about affirming in my flesh that I belong to another.” A quote I return to often. Fasting is not simply about giving up food or an activi-ty, a mere exercise of my will over my flesh and de-sires. Fasting is about affirming in my own hungers and desires that I belong to someone else. I live for someone else. I am willing to deny myself a good for the sake of another. My desires do not own me. Parents deny themselves various goods for the sake of their children all the time. For the most part they do so joyfully. Parents do not live for themselves, they live for another. Sometimes that other is their spouse, sometimes their children, sometimes God, and some-times any combination of the above. In our spiritual disciplines, especially in Lent, we take on affirming in ourselves that we belong to God. We submit ourselves to a penance that may directly or in-directly relate to aspects of our lives or vocations that conflict with being intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. That penance is not a punishment for our failure in these areas, but an offering and a way to affirm what I want to become as a child of God. It is an act of faith and hope that God will do bigger things in me than this simple sacrifice merits. Our penances, when we in turn unite to the cross of Jesus Christ, take on a more powerful and sanctifying character. These are the graces of Lent, to both sacrifice and to receive the fruits of that sacrifice. May your Lenten penances be fruitful and may you always affirm in your lives and flesh that you belong to God. Adoration and Praise Starting this week, we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Praise music every Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Crypt. Parish Potluck returns Wednesday Evening Potlucks begin again this week. Dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and en-joy a little time with your fellow parishioners. Very informal. Nice way to be together.
POTLUCKS BEGIN AGAIN! Wednesday night Potlucks resume on Wednesday, February 21 at 6:00 pm in the parish hall. If you've been looking forward to returning, we look forward to seeing you again. If you've never been, give us a try. Bring a dish to pass (purchased or home made), your own plate and plastic ware if possible, and a $2.00 donation for the main dish. Our cook teams provide the main dish and beverages and you bring side dishes or desserts. We have single people, couples and families who attend. With just one dish from you, you'll partake in a nice variety of food and the company is awesome! The last Wednesday of the month, we have game night so you're welcome to hang around after dinner and play board games or card games with us. Potlucks are every Wednesday night unless noted in the bulletin. Hope to see you there. Mike and Terri Hecksel - Parish Life Committee.
