ALL THE RIGHT WORDSHow Keyword Research Provided an 80% Traffic Increase For a Start Up

BackgroundBlog Hands is a blog writing service for online busi-nesses started by Chris Hornak. At Blog Hands, Chris and his team look at blog content as “the seeds of a great digital marketing campaign.” In their eyes, a website is the soil and promotion is the sun that helps it grow. But, in order for the sun and soil to do their job, they need good seeds. With that in mind, Chris designed Blog Hands as the go-to source for businesses and agencies in need of great online content to help them grow.

What are two of the biggest challenges that any new website faces?

Chris faced these same challenges at the start of 2016 when Blog Hands was in its early stages. At the time, the website ranked for a total of 48 keywords, only 9 of which were on the first two pages of Google. As a company that relies heavily on gaining traffic from search, these numbers needed to improve for his business to take off.

SEMrush Tools Used:

How Did They Do It?Chris knew that he couldn’t rely on just his Google Analytics account to help him gain the rankings he needed to get more traffic. What he needed was a tool that could help him improve his visibility and traffic from the keywords he already had rankings for in order to generate new opportunities for him and his sales team.

What SEMrush ReportsDo They Use?With SEMrush, Chris was able to elevate his keyword rankings and research, ultimately leading to an 80% increase in his Organic Traffic. Let’s take a closer look at how he was able to achieve this feat.

One of Chris’ biggest issues with using Google Analyt-ics is that he could only see his own website’s keyword rankings. Even then, he couldn’t see every individual keywords his website was ranking for.

Yes, those “Not Provided” keywords that keep every marketer tossing and turning at night.

Chris worked around the “Not Provided” roadblock by using SEMrush’s Organic Positions report on his own site. With this report, SEMrush was able to find keywords that Chris was ranking for on Google pages 2, 3, 4 and beyond.

He used this report to identify his keyword opportuni-ties; where he could improve upon what little pres-ence his website already had on Google.

When he noticed the keyword “ecommerce ideas” showing up in their Position’s report, Chris did what he does best and wrote a blog post about how to generate blog post ideas for ecommerce sites.

The resulting post, 5 Ecommerce Blog Topic Ideas that are Easy to Implement, has turned into a steady source of ecommerce lead generation for his compa-ny to this day.

How Do They Use The Data? Now whenever he finds a new keyword opportunity, Chris uses the following string of tools on SEMrush to develop and improve the content on his site:

The first thing Chris does is check his New and Lost keywords in the Position Changes report. This allows him to “stay ahead of any potential problems and maximize on their current successes.”

Next, with the Pages report, Chris can see how his landing pages are performing in terms of the traffic they drive and the keywords they rank for. If he is ranking for any keywords that he didn’t know he was ranking for, Chris will work on optimizing that page for

those keywords.

Once Chris identifies the landing page and keywords he wants to optimize for, he uses the SEO Ideas tool. With this tool he takes recommendations on how to optimize for a given keyword based on what the top 10 ranking competitors are doing for that keyword.

The last tool used in Chris’ daily routine is Position Tracking. With this tool, Chris can track how fruitful his optimization efforts have been by measuring growth in Visibility % and Estimated Traffic. Position Tracking provides daily updates on position data for any keyword you enter for any location worldwide. Chris sets up projects to track how he does on all the different devices tracked by SEMrush; desktop, mobile and tablet.

If Blog Hands creates content for a client that oper-ates on the local level, they use Position Tracking to track their keyword rankings in that specific city.

“In my opinion, SEMrush is the most up-to-date view of your SEO performance. Sure Google's Search Console is great, but the data is greatly delayed.” – Chris Hornak

The ResultWith the help of SEMrush, it’s easy to see how Chris’ visibility has grown in just one year. The most important stats are going from 48 ranking keywords to 327, with now 29 keywords on the first page of Google and an 80% total increase in Organic Traffic.

More helpful tools in SEMrushThis is just one way SEMrush can help you grow your organic traffic. In addition to Organic Research, SEO Ideas, and Position Tracking there are numer-ous other tools to use from SEMrush.

Social Media Tool- Remember that blog Chris made about ecommerce ideas? One of the biggest reasons Chris saw so much success with that article was because he used Facebook to promote it. With the SEMrush Social Media Tool, you can track the engagement of your followers across all major social media platforms, even including LinkedIn. The main benefit of this tool, however, is tracking how your competitors are using social media to engage with their audience. For more on the benefits of using this tool, check out this blog post.

Content Tool- This new tool in SEMrush allows you to track the performance of your articles by meas-uring social shares, keyword rankings and backlinks. The Content Tool monitors activity for articles on your site as well as your competitors.

SEO Content Template- If you don’t know how to develop a new piece of content, then you can use the SEO Content Template to generate a step by step formula for your webpage to succeed. This tool builds a skeleton for your post based off what the top 10 domains that are ranking for that keyword are doing.
