LEONARDO DICAPRIO'S 2016 OSCAR ACCEPTANCE SPEECH FOR BEST ACTOR

•Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscar acceptance speech was certainly one for the record books. After six previous Academy Award nominations, DiCaprio finally joined the ranks of Oscar winners and took home the 2016 Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Page 3: Let's talk about climate change

• The 41-year-old actor took a moment to speak about a cause that's very close to his heart: environmentalism and climate change.

• And lastly I just want to say this: "Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow.

Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.

Page 5: Let's talk about climate change

Climate changes We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much."

THE TOPIC OF TODAY'S MEETING : Weather before – weather today, Climate change

• WE WILL TRY TO ANSWER THE QUESTION ON HOW THE WEATHER WAS ONCE?

• WERE THERE CLEAR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SEASONS?• HOW WAS WINTER BEFORE?

• DID WE USED TO HAVE MORE SNOW IN CROATIA?• HOW DID THE CITY LOOK LIKE DURING THE WINTER?

• DID YOU HAVE ELECTRICITY, WATER, FOOD?• HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO GO TO THE STORE?

• WHAT WAS THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED?

Memories of Barica Jakupec, a retired teacher of chemistry of our school

• We are witnessing today the climate change which is the result of our human activities.

• There are no more visible season changes like before when it was clear is  it winter, spring, summer or fall.

• But I remember that even in my younger days there were deviations and surprises from nature.

Half of April, Late Seventies (1978 or 1979 years)

It was a beautiful spring morning. I wore a light green coat and black spring shoes and came to school extremely happy.

• Sun disappeared during my lecture hours, sky turned grey and heavy snow began to fall.

Flakes were big. They reminded me of the large white tissues. The children were enthusiastic and could not wait to get outside ...

• Traffic in the city was difficult. City buses did not drive.

• Former teacher of geography Marija Zic and I decided to walk despite the unsuitable clothes and shoes. Even thought we stumbled and

fell all the way, we succeed to get to the house. • We were wet and almost frozen Stormy wind

came with snow. It carried everything. Even plastic blinds from the window which children later used as sledges.

• The next day we also walked to the school. We had an ecological project instead of a lecture.

• Students and teachers happily cleaned the snow from laurel and other plants in order to prevent damage to trees and shrubs under the weight of snow.

• Students were cheerful because they were not in the class. They cleaned the snow, played with snowballs and enjoyed in the huge amounts of snow.

• I feel nostalgic for those times when people spend more time in the nature and for the nature ...

Mirjana Nadalin, retired teacher of Croatian language: Anecdotes from colder and older times

• On May 1, 1960 , storm carried a fist-sized stones from metal roofs and woodsheds. Everyone was hiding in the house because it was dangerous outside.

• On 15th June 1980, the storm carried away the cars and caravans from the bridge which connects Rijeka with island Krk. After that event , they have decided to close the bridge when the storm occurs.

• In 1964, high school students did not have any classes due to snow so they sledged from school to Torpedo Factory.

But the winter of 1978, I will never forget…

• Deep snow fell. A young man came to propose his girlfriend. He came by bus to Pecine- eastern part of Rijeka. But he could not return because the buses were not driving due to the huge snow. He was not worried about the weather. He kept walking through the deep snow for hours. He was happy anyway because she said "Yes."

• It was my husband, of course. I am always glad to talk about those lovely colder days.

Page 14: Let's talk about climate change

Ivan Misija, retired Gym teacher

• It was the winter of 1963. I was twenty years old and I had lived and studied in Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• I came by bicycle to my first collage exam. As I forgot the index in which my professor had to write in my first grade, I had to return home, which was about a mile away.

• The temperature was about -23˚C.• It was so cold that I had to get off

the bike several times and run past her to get warm.

• I was wearing warm clothes but it did not help at all. It was too cold.

• I can say that there is no such frizzy weather during the winter anymore in our country. It used to be -20 ° C for more than one month back then.

• We loved to skate on an ordinary road which was frozen and compressed by snow.

• We would skate at night because we could not see each other so we were not ashamed of falling ...

• We had such a great time...

40 years ago : 52 centimetres of snow in Rijeka

Did you know that just before spring of 1976 Rijeka was covered with half a meter of snow ?

On 9th March 1976 "Snow has once again surprised the citizens of Rijeka! Today, it started to snow on blossoming trees. The thermometer is about zero."

Page 18: Let's talk about climate change

The city stopped that day - thousands of people did not come to their workplaces, public transport did not drive, ambulance and stores did not work. There was a lot of dissatisfaction provoked by the fact of not cleaning snow properly. Residents blamed responsible for not organising the cleaning of snow effectively.

What would we do today if it snows so much that we need to stay in the house with no signal on cell phone and no Internet? Maybe we would read ???
