Principal’s report

Kindergarten Orientation

Tomorrow is the last of our visits for our 2013 Kindergarten students. They have all settled in beautifully at Junee North and I know they will be counting down the days until they can finally come to ‘big school’ every day! A huge thank you to Mrs Lisa Jones, who ran these sessions in Mrs McDevitt’s absence, ably supported by Mrs White. Next Tuesday there is a Parent Information session for parents of our new Kindergarten students. This will commence at 10:00 am in the hall.

Riverina Cricket

This week four of our girls – Isabella McGrath, Isabel O’Rafferty, Laura Smith and Madison Harpley - are in Lismore competing in the Riverina PSSA Cricket team at the NSW knockouts. We have had some fantastic news with the girls winning four out of four matches so far! In their first match the score was none for 38. In the second match Isabella took five wickets and Madison one. Fantastic effort girls! We look forward to hearing more reports as the week progresses.

Surveys

A huge thank you to the families who have returned surveys over the past week. If you would still like to send yours in, please try to get it in by next Friday (reminder – they are also on our website). I have been reading some very valuable opinions, comments and suggestions. If any parent would like to come in to discuss their survey thoughts with me, please contact me or put your name on the survey form and I will contact you. I will be collating the results of these surveys over the next few weeks and parents will have the opportunity to read these. There are certainly a number of changes which will be occurring next year as a response to the feedback I have been getting from students, staff and parents. There are some aspects which require a long term plan, while obviously some things are out of my control eg getting a larger hall for assemblies! Whilst we cannot please everyone, if I am hearing enough concerns regarding a matter, rest assured we will work out ways to rectify these.

Ngumba-dal launch

Yesterday representatives of the five district public schools – Junee North, Junee Public, Junee High, Eurongilly and Illabo – held a breakfast at Graze restaurant along with invited guests and business operators to officially launch our learning community “Ngumba-dal.” The term Ngumba-dal means unity and our schools have been working together this year to provide a means of improving the opportunities and learning outcomes for all of our students. This will be achieved through the sharing of ideas, resources, staff and events. Some plans in the pipeline include the establishment of a combined Ngumba-dal choir and utilizing the Junee High senior students as sports coaches for our students.

William’s achievement

Congratulations to Williams White for receiving a guitar tuition scholarship from the Riverina Conservatorium of Music. William, along with several other students at Junee North, receive weekly tuition from Jeff Donovan at school. In order to win a scholarship, students have to be nominated for their ability and commitment. Well done! I look forward to hearing William and the other guitar students perform again for us at assembly later this term.

REEC Visit

On Thursday 15 November, children from K and K/1 will have the opportunity for a special visit to the Riverina Environmental Education Centre (REEC). All other classes have already had this opportunity to visit this fantastic local resource. A reminder to parents of K and K/1 that permission notes and money need to be returned by next Monday.

Operation Art

In Week 6 several students from each stage will attend the annual Operation Art workshops being held at the Wagga art gallery. Four students from each stage who demonstrate a talent in visual arts were selected to attend these workshops. The Stage 1 group will have their session on Monday 19 November; Stage 2 on Tuesday 20 November and Stage 3 21 November. A reminder to parents of children attending to return permission notes as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing some creative works of art from these students – I know they will have a wonderful time and learn some new skills.

Uniforms

A reminder to our families of the summer uniform requirements for our students. Girls should be wearing either their dress or royal blue shorts and white shirt. Boys should be wearing their grey shorts and sky blue shirts. Year 6 only are permitted to wear their Year 6 sport shirts. Sports uniform should only be worn on Friday or unless notified by class teachers. We have a supply of second hand uniforms available for families needing assistance. Recently I have provided appropriate shirts and shorts to a number of children coming to school in incorrect uniform. A reminder also that shoes should be black leather or joggers (not muti coloured please!). Several of our girls have been wearing black jiffy type shoes which are inappropriate and certainly not safe footwear for school. I am extremely mindful of maintaining the image of Junee North through pride in our school uniform and seek full parental support to see this achieved.

Erica, Cooper, Jaxson and Samantha proudly show off their correct summer uniforms.

2013 School Captains

This week notes were handed out to all Year 5 students regarding nominating for school captain in 2013. I know that some have been waiting for this time of the year and have already started working on their speeches. Speeches and election day will be on Wednesday 28 November, commencing at 2:10pm. Parents and relatives of our Year 5 students are most welcome to attend and support their children.

Cycling info

Riding a pushbike is a great way to get from A to B and keep fit in the process. A new website dedicated to cycling – whether for fun, transport or performance – is available at: www.bicycleinfo.nsw.gov.au.

Here you will find info on cyclepaths around NSW, keeping your bike in top condition, upcoming workshops, sharing the road and much more.

Getting involved reaps benefits

Did you know that the latest research shows the more involved parents are in their child’s education, the happier their children are and the better they do at school. Being involved can include taking more of an interest in what your child is doing at school, helping out at school if you can and being supportive. Read more about this at School A to Z: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/c
