Welcome to this week’s newsletter.

We were scheduled to have a Cyber-Bullying talk to Stage 3 by Vanessa the Youth Liaison Officer but

unfortunately she could not make it today so we are rescheduling for next term. I have, however, included

some information in this newsletter about what it is and some advice about talking to your child about this

issue. I hope you find it useful.

Our gymnastics program will begin on Friday 14 October and continue for 5 weeks. This program is part of our

Personal Development, Health and P E Curriculum and the students enjoy the activities provided. A note will

come home next week about this.

Stage 3 are getting very excited about our excursion to Ballarat on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next

week and so am I. Looking at the itinerary we are going to be very busy and should come back exhausted but

happy. We will ring the school at about 3pm on our way home and there will be a sign near the front gate

giving our estimated time of arrival back at the school in case we are not running to time.

Congratulation to Lucy Clarke on being nominated to sing in the choir at the School Spectacular at the Sydney

Entertainment Centre.

Mufti Day/Wonky Tree Day tomorrow Friday 16th. Come along dressed wonky. Gold coin donation.

Enjoy your weekend, sunny weather and mild temperatures are forecast.

Cyber-Bulling

Cyber-bulling involves the use of information and

communication technologies (ITC) to support

deliberate, repeated and hostile behaviour by an

individual or group that is intended to harm others.

This form of bulling is often committed using mobile

phones or the internet and includes such activities

such as: Posting hurtful messages on social

networking sites.

Sending repeated unwanted messages either by

SMS, Instant messaging (IM) or email.

Excluding someone from an online group.

Creating fake social networking profiles or websites

that are mean and hurtful.

ADVICE

It is vital to talk to young people about behaving

appropriately online and with their mobile phones.

They need to be aware that there are real world

consequences for their virtual world actions.

Young people also need to know that they can tell

someone if they are being cyber-bullied. Ignoring the

problem won’t make it go away, and there are steps

that they take to address the cyber-bullying. What is

most important is that they tell someone.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

In order to prevent cyber-bulling, a useful acronym

to remember is I-CURRB:

Investigate what your child is doing online.

Communicate with your child.

Use family safety software to keep track of what your

children are able to access online.

Research your school’s and internet service

provider’s policies on cyber-bulling. Online

applications, such as IM, will also have their own

policies.

Report cyber-bulling to your child’s school and/or

ISP. If you have serious concerns for your child’s

safety, contact your local police.

Block communications from cyber-bulling. Most IM

applications, chat rooms and email account

providers allow you to block messages from

identified people.
