Friday 15 May – Week 4 Term 2 Dear Parents/Carers, Well done Years 3 and 5! This week students in Years 3 and 5 completed national standardised assessments in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. These assessments, known as NAPLAN, took place over a three day period with the results becoming available late in Term 3. While standardised testing has many limitations, the information gained from these assessments is useful in assisting the school to track student progress in many areas. Of course not all students perform well in tests. We know that some students produce remarkable pieces of work and show great insight in their day to day classwork and discussions and this level of excellence is not always captured in an assessment. For this reason the school uses multiple forms of assessment (including NAPLAN) to support your child in their learning journey. If your child completed NAPLAN this week I would like to pass on my congratulations to them for approaching this week’s assessments with both dedication and perspective. Last Day for Opportunity Class Applications – Year 4 only If your child is in Year 4 this year and you have expressed an interest in applying for a placement in a NSW Opportunity Class in Years 5 & 6, please be aware that TODAY is the last day to apply online. Please contact me prior to 3pm today if you are having difficulty. [email protected] Grade Newsletters Grade Newsletters are posted each term on the school website. As there has been some confusion about where they are located we have decided to post the Newsletter hyperlink as a News Story on the first page of the website so that they are always easy to find. http://www.nthsyddem-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/years/grade-notices-and-newsletters Please don’t share food at the DEM I would like to remind all parents, carers and students that we have many students with severe allergies at our school and that food cannot be shared or offered to another student at any time without the classroom teachers consent. Sometimes students believe that sweets and lollies are not a food item. We are addressing this misconception in class. Please help us to keep all of our children safe by reinforcing this important rule and message with your child. Myra Wearne Principal The Dem Newsletter What’s On? INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

Review of Special Religious Education and Special Education in Ethics in NSW

government schools The NSW Department of Education and Communities has commissioned an independent review of the implementation of Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) in NSW public schools. The review is being conducted by an independent research company, ARTD Consultants. This company provides services in evaluating public policy. The review will inform ongoing improvement of SRE and SEE for the Department and providers. How can you participate in the review? You can complete a survey up until 31 July 2015 via an online portal, located at this link: http://forms.artd.com.au/s3/Online-contribution-for-parents-carers The survey is in English and has 19 questions. For most questions you can select an answer from the multiple choice options provided. Only two questions ask for written answers. Extra written feedback for another five questions may be provided if desired but is not essential. Queries or complaints about the way the review is conducted For questions or concerns associated with participation in the review or to raise a complaint about the conduct of the review, please contact the Leader, Quality Assurance, on (02) 9244 5025 or by email at [email protected].
