ANZAC DAY

On Wednesday 1st May, we commemorated ANZAC Day at Llandilo with our ANZAC service. We had two representatives from the Penrith RSL Sub Branch Mr Peter Pirret and Mr Don Law in attendance.

The captains and prefects did a fantastic job leading the service. All of the students showed great respect throughout the service. Classes made wreaths and these were laid under the flagpole on the day.

Junior Dance Students from Year 1 and 2 having been working extremely hard the past few weeks to learn our dance moves. We are learning a dance to the song ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. The girls and boys show up each Wednesday at lunch with big smiles on their faces, and are always eager to practice. At the moment we are in the process of choosing our costumes and learning some new moves to make sure we are ready for some upcoming auditions. Senior Dance When it comes to dance, there are none as creative as the senior dance girls. Again this year, they are working hard to choreograph their own moves to a remix of Destiny’s Child, ‘Survivor’. Their dedication to rehearsals is outstanding, as they support and encourage each other to learn each part. We are looking forward to performing on stage later in the year.

District Cross

Country On 8th of May 2019, 47 Llandilo students travelled to Jamison Park for the District Cross Country carnival. The 8, 9 and 10 year old boys and girls ran a total of 2km. The 11, 12 and 13 year old boys and girls ran a total of 3km. During the day it got pretty hot and windy and the marquee had to come down. There was a field of almost 150 competitors in each event and all of our students here at Llandilo gave it their best to come in the top 100, with Nathan Sant coming in the top 8 and qualifying to represent the Penrith Zone at the Sydney West Regional carnival.

We would like to thank the teachers who attended the carnival to cheer us on from the side of the track and helped around the course. Thank you for all of the students who came and ran around the course. Good luck to Nathan Sant in the Penrith Zone Regional cross country team.

DANCE REPORT

On Thursday 9th May, 2019 our school held an event

called Throwback Thursday to help raise money for

Hawkesbury’s Helping Hands. This was all about

dressing up in clothes from times gone by. We had

many students and staff that dressed up from the 80’s,

60’s and 50’s. This event was very successful as we

raised $315 for our chosen charity.

At the end of last term, Years 4 – 6 undertook the ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey. We have been doing this survey over the last three years and find it gives us valuable data on what is working and where we need to go, from the point of view of a very important source – the students in our classrooms. We are pleased to see that there is some very positive da-ta about classroom learning culture, as this has been a focus of our efforts over the last couple of years. Later in the year, the students will complete the survey for a second time and you, as a parent group, will also have an opportunity to engage with the survey.

Below, I have included some snapshots of our results.

Over this week and next, our school is undertaking NAPLAN On-line. The tests have been

scheduled over four days with a couple of days in reserve to catch-up anyone who has

been absent. There were some minor tech issues on the first day, but since then it has run

quite smoothly. The students seem to engage with the on-line platform quite well. Results

will be available later in the year. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any

questions about these results when they are released.

Our Llandilo P&C held their Annual General Meeting last week and we welcome a whole

new executive committee;

Leone Cutler – President

Leanne Taylor – Secretary

Amber Mirfin – Treasurer

Allison Harwood – Uniform shop coordinator

The positions of Vice President and Assistant Treasurer are still open. I’d like to thank the

outgoing committee for their dedication and commitment over the last year. Some have

served for many years and their assistance and expertise has been invaluable. Lorraine

Sant and Melissa Innins have their youngest nearing the end of their time at LPS and I’d like

to give a special shout out to these two parents who have been part of the P&C since I

have been here, and for many years before that. I look forward to equally rewarding

relationships with the current committee.

This term is reporting term, and you will be receiving your child’s written report at the

beginning of July. We have been working on an easier-to-read format that has been

flagged by parents and staff for the past couple of years. There will be outcome statements

for all key learning areas, with a tick box to let you know where your child is at. Comments

will be written for English and mathematics, with a general learning comment at the end.

Our hope is that this format will be easier for your to peruse, but will still give you the

important information you need. Reports will be followed up with parent/teacher

interviews at the beginning of Term 3.

Over the course of this year, staff are involved in twilight professional learning sessions in

lieu of the staff development days scheduled for the end of the year. This gives us the

opportunity to engage in professional learning that is relevant to the current year’s plan

and also engage providers at a time that is not highly demanded. At the beginning of the

year, all staff completed mandatory anaphylaxis and cardio pulmonary resuscitation

updates, which are required yearly. This week, on Tuesday 14th May, Mr Vella, Miss Harris

and Ms O’Connor ran workshops on ‘Movement in Maths’ and ‘Mindcraft for Education’.

As a staff, we also looked more deeply into our school vision to create a more memorable

statement, whilst keeping it aligned to school focus areas – more still to come on that.

Later this year on Tuesday 25th June, the staff will investigate how to make more

professional class films through ‘Filmpond’, which is the Department of Education’s film

creation and sharing platform. We will also look at aspects of keeping a

good work/life balance and the complicated process of improving

effective communication. Next term, on Thursday 29th August, we will

undertake a workshop that will look at our strengths and different

personality traits to maximise the potential across the school. Each of

these sessions runs for three hours, from 3pm – 6pm. This means that

the school will be non-operational on Thursday 19th and

Friday 20th December. The last day for

students is gazetted state wide as Wednesday

18th December.

Yours in learning

Deborah Getley

Class Report

Fraser Island

In Fraser Island we have been learning about past, present and future

transport and communication. I think the future is going to be cool.

- Jacob

In Fraser Island we have been learning

about persuasive writing. We tried to

persuade our parents to keep a lost pet and

it worked! - Luv

In Fraser Island we’ve been learning how to

mix colours on paper. We learnt that white

paint mixed with a different coloured paint

makes a lighter coloured paint. Sometimes

you can add a little bit of black paint and

another colour to make that colour a darker

tinted paint. We needed a little bit of help

from Ms Cockburn. It was a lot of fun. - Indianna

In Frasier Island we have been learning about skip counting by 2’s, 4’s, 5’s

and 10’s. We watched some video clips about skip counting and we also

skip counted all together as a class. I already knew how to skip count but I

was still excited! - Milla

LEARNING LINKS – CYBER SAFETY

Colgate Community Garden Challenge

Don’t forget that we are collecting used oral care waste. Please

place your items in the box at the back of the office block.

You will often hear about the benefits of children reading at home. When a

child reads for 20 minutes at home each day, they will read for the

equivalent of 7,300 minutes per year and be exposed to approximately

1,800,000 words per year. This reading can vastly extend your child’s

general knowledge and vocabulary. Reading does not have to be a “home

reader”. It is important for children to enjoy books that cover their own

interests – this could include magazines, recipes etc.

Additionally, it is also great for children to listen to adults read. Perhaps you

might be able to share one of your favourite childhood fairy tales with your

child. We understand that sometimes, in the busy lifestyle we live, it may not

always be possible to read with your child. Another way for your child to

listen to an adult to read quality literature is to let them listen to famous

people read quality books at
