Kindergarten Expo Last week we had our first Kindergarten expo that was a tremendous success. Big thank you to our Kindergarten staff, Mrs Armstrong, Miss Harvey and Miss Hyland for their organisation. Staff and community came together to showcase to our 2020 kindergarten parents the great opportunities and support that is at Edgeworth Heights PS.

Father’s Day Breakfast We had a record turn out of fathers last Friday at our Father’s Day Breakfast even though the weather was not on our side. Thank you to Mr Dybal and Miss Gadowsky for the amazing organisation they did to ensure the students were able to enjoy a leisurely breakfast with special family members. Thank you also to the staff for coming in earlier to help with the breakfast. It was great to see families dressing up and having a special photo taken. These were up loaded on our Facebook site. Thank you to the parents who have given their feedback through our online survey. Any constructive feedback is valuable to continue to strengthen events and processes at our school. Survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/T5JCG2S

Parent /Teacher Interviews We held our Term 3 parent/ teacher interviews last night. Thank you to the staff for organising this opportunity for parents to come after hours to chat about their child’s progress. We can already see from parent feedback how we can further streamline this event for next year. If you were unable to attend please ring the office and organise a time to meet with your child’s teacher.

Students who shine We have had students go to zone for athletics and four of them have made it to state. Fantastic effort! More detailed information in an article by Mrs Williams. Our Foyer art work by 2R are just some examples of the quality art work you will be seeing in the up and coming Art Show on 18th September in the school hall.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) These students have had their Salties drawn from the tub at a morning assembly. They had achieved a Salty for showing expected behaviours at school in lining up at assembly or walking around the school safely. Congratulations to Heidi E, Aislynn O, Alex S, Alex H, Sienna K.

Rock and Water This year staff have worked with Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre to run Rock and Water sessions for groups of students. The program consists of a series of exercises and games that are practised to develop confidence and self-reflection. The games are martial arts based, and students learn to block, hit strike shields, stand strong, negotiate using “rock” or “water” verbal approaches, walk away from a fight, consider alternatives to aggression, and develop understandings about who they are, their intuitive feelings and their personal direction. This program has been very successful and parents have enjoyed being a part of the last lesson to share first hand and celebrate the “rock and water” learning with their child. Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre, are having an open day on the 7 th and 8th of September if anyone is interested. For more information you can see the flyer in this newsletter or on our Facebook page.

NAIDOC Week of Activities at EHPS This week we have recognised and celebrated NAIDOC. Students have worked with Mrs Jarvis, Mrs Honeysett and staff to put together a range of activities and assemblies to support the theme: Voice, Treaty, Truth. Next newsletter we will have articles and some pictures.

News From EHPS SRC: Lunchtime Events & Recreation: My name is Mahli and I am the Minister for Lunchtime Events & Recreation. The SRC held a paper plane competition earlier this term. The winners were Joel.R, Ben.K., and Aydn.S. The Hockey Competition has been postponed until Term 4 as the hall will be unavailable because of the Art Show for the rest of this term. In Weeks 9 & 10 SRC Representatives will be taking names for entry into our annual EHPS Has Got Talent which is held in Term 4. Auditions will be in Weeks 2 & 3 next term, so start practising. Next week the SRC have planned a Crazy Hair Day on Thursday to raise money for prizes for lunchtime competitions and DTT Day. Look for more information in a note on Monday. By Mahli.B. Technology: Hi! I’m Mikaela.M, your Technology Minister. Next term we will be doing virtual reality, robots and sphero in class lessons. Each day, at second half lunch you can play on ipods, computers or touch screen computers in the library. By Mikaela.M. School Welfare and Safety: Mrs Duncan is doing an inspection so our school can be safe. There are workers fixing fences and working in Biraleh Barmah to repair safety hazards. All students and teachers are working on PBL. By Phoenyx.I. Sport: My name is Savannah and I am Minister for Sport on the SRC. Congratulations to the seven Regional participants. Congratulations to those who are going to State- Emily, Miles, Lukas and Rishayla. Good luck to them. Congratulations to all our school PSSA teams, especially the senior boys soccer who came 1st in the competition. By Savannah.P. Communication: A reminder the focus for PBL is RESPECT. Lots of kids are earning Salties, by showing respect, which is getting us closer to the line in our school recognition box. Our last reward with Motivate Sport was a great success and we are now working toward our next goal. Another big thanks to the school SAS Staff for everything they do for our school. By Ella.C. Community Service A few weeks ago we had the Mark Hughes Beanie day. We raised a total of $396.50 altogether. The money raised has gone to the Mark Hughes Foundation. Thank you for bringing a gold coin to donate. Coming up at the end of term is Bandanna day in October. There will be all new styles and colour on sale for $5. At our SRC meeting, Isabel franklin presented a proposal to the SRC. She was in hospital for a few days when she was younger over Easter. She spoke about the fun craft things she had been given which made her time in hospital more fun. This year we are asking for donations to make up some bags for Halloween so we can make up some gift bags to give to Ronald McDonald

Edgeworth Heights Art Show : Challenges kids to make artworks out of recycled materials! WONDERFUL things can be made out of waste, and EHPS is calling for its school students to enter a recycled artwork in the 2019 Art Show. We want to focus on the reuse part of the ‘3Rs of the waste hierarchy’ - Reuse, Reduce, Recycle - to show how students can give waste a new purpose by transforming it into a creative piece of artwork. Students are invited to create either 2D or 3D artworks, which must be individual and unique, and made entirely of used or recycled materials. The creative works will be exhibited at the EHPS Art Show, Wednesday, 18

th

September, in the school hall as part of our Art Show. Examples of possible artworks:

Entries in to the show need to be brought to school on Thursday, 12th September or

Friday, 13th September and given to class teachers. Please ensure your entry is

labelled with your name and class.

Introducing Miss Basset! A warm welcome to Miss Basset who is one of our schools RFF teachers. She has also worked at Telarah Public School where she taught a year four class. We are extremely lucky to have her teaching here! “I LOVE this wonderful school because everyone is welcoming and very helpful towards the casual teachers,” stated Miss Basset. “What do you like to do in your spare time?” we asked her. “I enjoy shopping and playing with my dogs, Vader and Tommy,” she replied. “I also like to play AFL, which I started in 2017, but sadly I haven’t scored a goal this season,” she added. It sure sounds like you’re enjoying your weekends Miss Basset and hopefully you score a goal in AFL soon! Reported by Nick B and Ella H

Guide Dog Lovers!

Bella M in 3F and Lucy M in 1C are raising a guide dog. His name is Ulma (Ully for short) and he is a Labrador. They help teach Ully obedience. WOW! HOW LUCKY ARE THEY!

We asked them what was challenging about raising a guide dog. “So far the most challenging thing about raising a guide dog is trying to get him to sit,” the girls reported. “The easy part is getting him to eat his food,” they added.

So I guess you’re wondering how they train Ully? “We sometimes train him at home or he goes to puppy training,” explained Bella and Lucy. Training involves lots of pats and food rewards. At training he learns important commands such as sit, stay, drop and how to socialise with other dogs. Well despite the hard work involved it is DEFINITELY a rewarding job! It sounds like you will get to enjoy lots of puppy love and know your effort will make a big difference to someone who is blind.

Seat Art Group – Article

Miss Mellows has been working with Jessie D, Aislynn O, Sienna S, Piper M, Kaylee G and Mikayla M to design and paint our impressive welcome chair outside the office. The group of us 6 girls all got together for a meeting and we discussed what type of artwork we were going to complete. We wanted the entry to the school to be more welcoming. In the meeting we drew up our own ideas of what we wanted the bench to look like. We all then voted on what we liked from each team members design. The group decided that we wanted to do Aboriginal dot painting, to show that every culture is welcomed at our school. We wanted the word ‘welcome’ to show that Edgeworth Heights Primary School is supportive, friendly and accepting. We decided on a fish design for the lower part of the bench to connect the bench with our schools fish philosophy. We agreed we wanted bright colours so it would stand out and draw people’s eyes to it. Before we began painting the seat we practised dot painting and how to draw fish. We wanted to make sure we felt confident with what we were putting on the seat. We each chose a letter from the word ‘welcome’ to do our own individual dot design. We then traced out hand on our letter and then completed our own dot painting design. We chose colours and patterns that represented each of us. Miss Mellows then completed the underwater design on the lower section of the seat, under our guidance. We are very happy that we can make people feel welcomed and that we were able to be creative, let our ideas flow and share our talent with others. Thank you to Mrs Duncan for encouraging this project.

CANBERRA EXCURSION

This year’s Canberra excursion was a fabulous success and extremely enjoyable. Upon arriving we went

straight to Parliament House and were educated on the House of Representatives and the Senate. We left

Parliament House and headed straight to our accommodation at the Canberra Carotel, where we were

designated a cosy cabin and ate a delicious dinner! Day two began with a cold -2 degrees morning to start our

fun filled day. We visited the Australian Institute of Sport where we saw gymnasts training for a competition. We

all enjoyed Sportex and learnt how to test our sporting skills. From there we visited the Australian Mint and

observed coins being made. We saw Titan the machine tip a drum of gold coins into the machine to be sorted

and pressed. After the Mint we travelled to Mount Ainslie Look Out where we had an amazing glimpse of our

nation’s capital and then headed down the hill for a much needed lunch break. After lunch we went to The

Australian War Memorial where the children enjoyed looking at the amazing displays, listening to authentic

Australian War stories and exploring the ‘Discovery Zone’. We were lucky enough to see the changing of the

guards. This amazing day was completed with a visit to Telstra Tower where many braved the windy conditions

on the outside viewing deck. We were then ready to return to our hotel for a delicious dinner and bed. Day

Three was a day filled with excitement and an early start! Our snow adventure at Mount Selwyn started with a

stop to the snow gear hire venue Rhythm Snow Sports and then we arrived at the snow, to be met with actual

snow falling and chilly temperatures. There were smiles and delight on every face as they built snowmen and

threw snowballs at the teachers! We returned to our warm cosy cabins and ate a delicious dinner again! Day

Four started with packing our gear onto the bus and then a visit to Questacon. Students explored hands on

discovery zones and then experienced gravity first-hand going done a free fall slide. The day did not finish

there, we made our way to the National Electoral Education Centre where we voted for our favourite fruit using

the exact process that we vote for our politicians. We then had some lunch and began our journey home. The

children actively participated in all activities and enjoyed learning about how our country runs. A big thank you

to our amazing bus driver Ray for a fantastic week. Thanks must also go to Australian Government for their

initiative of the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate which makes the trip more affordable for the pupils.

Kinder 2020 Expo The Kinder Expo held last Wednesday afternoon was a great success! Lots of families attended the event- it was great to see lots of new faces, and also familiar ones too. On the night we handed out some information about our P&C, introduced ourselves to the community and served a light supper for families. Thank you to Mrs Armstrong for inviting us to attend this event, we look forward to being involved in the transition to Kindergarten in 2020. We want you on our P&C! We currently have Canteen related, and Executive Team vacancies within our P&C. If you are interested in learning more about these positions, please come along to our next meeting on Tuesday 10th September 2019 from 6pm in the school library. Membership is cheap as chips at $1, and we are super friendly. We look forward to welcoming you J Fundraising news Thompson Pie Drive Our 2019 Thompson Pie Drive raised around $1600! Thank you to all the families who ordered, especially to the Gilchrist and Norman families who supported us by placing HUGE orders that contributed to our amazing profit! I would also like to acknowledge the help of the volunteers who backed almost $8000 worth of items for collection, your help is greatly appreciated! McDonalds Family Fun Night We had a very successful McDonalds night on 21/08, raising $300 to go towards supporting our school. Thanks to all those who got behind the night and quit cooking dinner for a good cause! Father’s Day Stall and Breakfast Another successful Father’s Day stall (organised by Bec, Aimee and Jacinta) last Friday saw us raise over $1700! We hope that all the dads, step dads, grandfathers, uncles and special people enjoyed the gifts that were purchased from our stall. Thank you to the staff at EHPS for holding an event to celebrate special men in the lives of the students at EHPS. Canteen Operation and Roster Our canteen is open for lunch and recess on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you are able to assist us by volunteering some time on these days to help man the canteen, we would greatly appreciate it. At the moment, we are regularly having to close the canteen due to lack of volunteers. We understand and sympathise that families are very busy, and work and family commitments do not always leave time to offer a hand. But if you find yourself with time to offer, we would love to have you come and try out our new canteen. We welcome mums, dads, grandparents, step parent, aunties and uncles! Remember that hours spent volunteering can count towards benefits such as Newstart and CCS. If you are interested in volunteering send an SMS with your name and availability to our canteen mobile 0434 186 774, or contact the school office. Eat Fresh and Win Promotion This promotion is in its final weeks, finishing up on Friday 20/09. Purchase fresh fruit and/or vegetables from the canteen to receive stickers to win instant and major prizes! Thank you to those students who have supported us in the promotion. ‘Fruit break’ is now available on Quickcliq If you are ordering school lunches via Quickcliq, you may have noticed that you can now order fruit break under the meal tab ‘Fruit break’. We hope this makes it easier to purchase fresh fruit and veggies for your children for this meal break.
