Word on ThE STrEET

He is known in Bangladesh as Potua, a word usually used by folk artists. He always tried to spread the culture of his country and the beauty of rural Bangladesh through his paintings. In addition, his work has come to be a part of Bangladesh’s political history. One of it is the amazing artwork of Yahya Khan, the Pakistani president who ordered cruel killings in Bangladesh.

TONGUETWISTERSTongue twisters are difficult to say. How fast can you say it without making any mistakes?

I can think of six thin things, but I can think of six thick things too.

What makes a great story far better to read than a good story are the little mistakes. Little mistakes add up to a big one, and that affects your story much more than you would think. Here are a few of those mistakes to look after, if you want to make your essay spotless of red marks.

SpellingThe easiest to spot and most annoying of all are the careful spelling mistakes make readers think poorly of the writer. So be careful care when you revise and spot them out,

TenseMistakes in tense makes the sentence sound wrong and confuses its meaning. Be aware of them.

Singular/PluralThis mistake is a silly one, and can be noticed easily by the readers too. Revise your writings well, and revise again.

No headingsYour story may be great, but without a heading it’s pointless. In a writing competition, this will take away a lot of marks.

a mystErious disEasE• Social media is now filled with

“ALS Ice Bucket Challenge”. Starting from Robert Downey Jr to former president George W Bush, almost every celebrity took part in it. Apart from the challenge here are a few facts which you should know about ALS.

• The full form of ALS is “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis”.

• It is a disease that affects the nerves that connect the hands, legs etc.

• The nerves die and the organs stop working. Imagine a person who wants to drink water but can’t grab the glass because his hand is not working!

• The signs of ALS are having a hard time in moving the arms, or in talking or chewing or swallowing.

• There’s no test that can identify ALS.

• There’s no cure for ALS.

• ALS doesn’t spread by touching.

• It is sometimes called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” as baseball player Lou Gehrig suffered from this disease.

• Even now, doctors have no idea why ALS occurs.

Samia stopped running and decided to take rest for a few seconds. She could see Jimmy running without even looking back. Samia used to find it very cute and it was something she loved to do after a busy long day. Jogging in the park with Jimmy was the best part of her day. She started running again. She saw a crowd gathered around something lying on the road in

front her. Was it..? No! She didn’t even dare to think something like that. She pushed through the crowd and saw her German Shepherd lying on the ground in pain.

Samia woke up from her dream. She was sweating. She repeated the words her therapist advised her to say, “Jimmy is gone. I left Bnagladesh. Toronto is my new home.” anika Jannat

What you’ll need?• Adult help• A cup of milk• A bowl• A strainer• Four teaspoons of white vinegar

What to do?Ask an adult to heat up the milk but not to boil it. Then ask the adult to pour the milk into the bowl. Add vinegar to the bowl and stir it for 1-2 minutes with a spoon. Now carefully pour the milk into the sink through the strainer. After you are done you will see a droplet of milk in the strainer. Let it cool for few moments then wash it with water. You can mold it into any shape you like. Within few days it will harden like plastic.

What you’ll need?• A piece of paper• A pen• An envelope

What to do?Before you start your magic show muliply the current year by two and write it on a paper. Put the paper inside an envelope and start your show.

Ask one of your audience members to volunteer. Ask the volunteer the following his/her birth year and the year he/she started school.

Now subtract each answer separately from the current year. Add the two years he said with the answer you got from subtracting before. Hand him/her the envelope and ask them to open it. And voila! anika Jannat
