INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Greetings and Happy New Year to All! I always enjoy this time of year, after the busy rush of the holi-

days, to take stock of things, clean out, re-organize , and spend some quality quilting time. I have an idea for

my Challenge Quilt, and now some time to work on it! Plans are well underway for our March Guild Mixer,

to be held in conjunction with the Quilt Challenge. It should be a fun and enjoyable evening for everyone,

with food, games, prizes, and of course, beautiful quilts! I am also looking down the road, just a bit, towards

our spring Quilt Show. Have you decided on your entries, yet?

As your new President, I look forward to an exciting year of friendship, meaningful projects, and great

learning opportunities. In a nutshell, that is what the Guild means to me. Quilters seem to have a unique

bond that surpasses that of the usual organization. Let’s build on that together. Please feel free to contact me

at any time with your ideas, suggestions, and concerns, or just to say hello.

See you on January 8,

Librar y New s

I have some sad news to report this month. Due to the recent heavy rains, our library lost many books.

The school basement was flooded, and many of the books we store there were under water. We lost about 5

crates of books. We have been advised to leave the books where they are until we determine if they will be

covered under the schools insurance. So there will be no official library at the January meeting.

However, Molly and I will be at the library table so please bring any books you want to return so they'll

be available for others to borrow.

Of course, we will gladly accept donations!

Also, since we'll be buying new books, this is your chance to let us know what you want! Applique?

Scrap? Traditional? We'll be asking for your input, so come see us at the library table!

~ Molly Cook and Miladie Thompson, Librarians

* * MEETING DATE CHANGE **

The January meeting, originally scheduled for Jan. 1 (New Years' Day) will be held on Tuesday,

January 8th at Grass Valley Charter School (formerly Hennessey School) at 6:30.

Communi t y Services

I am pleased to report the grand totals for 2012 were exceptional! The efforts of those that participated

throughout the year enabled us to provide 465 quilts, 221 Christmas stockings, 37 wall hangings, and 10 pil-

lowcases. These items will provide warmth and comfort for many of our fellow community residents. A spe-

cial thank you to the Golden Girls mini group for donating the remaining gifts and candies from the Christ-

mas party. These were given to the service agencies along with the quilts. I appreciate the generosity and

energy of all those who contributed to make this possible.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew will resume on Thursday, January 17, 2013. Please join us to

help with Community Services, work on your own project, or attend Skill Building with Lorna Tiller or

Home Workshop with Sue Robinson. I have experienced a lot of fun, laughter, and new friendships since

becoming involved. And cookies and chocolate are there to provide energy! Hope to see you there in the

new year.

2013 OPPORTUNITY QUILT

Sales are nice and brisk and so is the weather at Cornish Christmas! Lorna and I have been donning our Cornish

Ladies' attire, and we are having fun selling Opportunity Quilt tickets and our members' Homemade Items. Lorna is

the #1 ticket seller! Our homemade items have enjoyed a very nice and steady sale as well. Thank you to Mary Ross,

who came out on the night after Thanksgiving, to help me sell tickets. We would also like to thank Phyllis Brodie, Judy

Hamilton, and Janene Powell, for bundling up and coming out to help us sell tickets on December 14. Lorna and I are

looking forward to reporting to you at the January meeting, on just how well we did at Cornish Christmas. We are ex-

cited to be back in business at the January 8th meeting, and we look forward to seeing you all then. Please remember

to pick up your Opportunity Quilt tickets if you haven't already done so, and we thank you for your support.

Have you recovered from the Holiday Season? Have you used your new sewing machine or fabric? Is

your Guild Challenge started or maybe even finished? I hope you answered yes to all of the above. Now that

the holidays are over and the weather outside is reminding us that inside sewing is the place to be, let’s get

our Guild Challenge quilts done for the March Guild meeting.

I have heard rumors about some pretty amazing combinations and am looking forward to seeing what

you all have come up with for your personal quilts. Are there really Silver Petunias or Mello Yellow Subma-

rines? It really is all about you so enjoy making it and showing it to all of us. Any questions, please call Lois

at 530-432-9423 or 530-205-6215.

OLD BUSINESS

Carol Phillips Memorial Kris Cook advised that the Carol Phillips Memorial Scholarship was well

received by the General Membership. Frances O’Brian reported that when Ralph Phillips was told of the

scholarship, he was very, very moved. Frances also reported that Ralph was invited to the Holiday Chal-

lenge unveiling, and was thanked by Ralph because he saw a side of Carol he never knew, even after 50 years

of marriage.

Policies & Procedures Update Sharon Cook will provide Joan Mosley with a list.

Hall of Honor Sharon Cook will provide Joan Mosley with the paperwork associated with the Hall of

Honor nominees.

Grass Valley Charter School Flood Kris Cook reports that the basement of the Charter School was

flooded in the last storm, and that numerous books in our Library were destroyed. Will it be an insurance

claim for the School, the Guild, or? Cathy suggested we ask around the membership to see if anyone has du-

plicates they wish to donate. All are concerned about mold on the remainder of the books, as this could be a

safety/health issue for all. Kris and Joan will be looking into this situation.

CHANGE IN EXECUTIVE BOARD

Kris Cook announced that Sharon Cook will be moving to New Mexico due to family matters, so we

will need to fill the office. A discussion ensued, and according to our By-Laws, Joan Mosley accepted the

Presidency. Joan was asked if she had someone in mind for Vice President, and Joan replied yes, Barbara Ce-

resa. A vote was taken by the executive board and the entire board, and Barbara Ceresa was selected as the

new incoming Vice President.

(Continued from previous page)

Pine Tree Quilt Guild 2013 Executive Board shall consist of:

Joan Mosley – President

Barbara Ceresa – Vice President

Judy Johnston – Treasurer

Anne Marie Curtis – Secretary

By copy of these minutes to the Bank, the above-named individuals shall be the new signees for the

ship.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Kris Cook again reminded all Committee Chairs to update their binders, and give them to the incom-

ing Committee Chairs.

Equipment – Carol Riddles said all was okay.

Community Service – Marjorie McConnell reports that all quilts and items were sized, sorted and dis-

tributed. There were 358 quilts, 220 stockings, and numerous walker bags. Marjorie requested that the siz-

ing and descriptions of each item be done ahead of the day of distribution, making the actual distribution go

more smoothly and take less time. Marjorie advises that the Phillips Estate Sale will be held in March, exact

date to be announced. Marjorie does not want the Phillips Estate checks to be made out to her. She sug-

gested that the checks can be made to the charity of your choice. There will be no Community Service in De-

cember, with the next meeting to be held in January.

Mystery Gifts Loretta White will not be continuing. Robin Peterson will need a new Partner.

Holiday Party Rose Thompson reports her mini group members all worked hard and had fun putting

the program together. Judy Hamilton volunteered to Chair the party for 2013. Rose has left over items which

can be used next year; if Judy doesn’t want them, they can be put in storage, or donated to Community Ser-

vice, or local schools.

Guild Challenge Lois Hodges reports ladies are all working on their challenge.

Skill Building – Lorna Tiller reports that interest in Skill Building is still somewhat slow, but that she

will continue to offer her services for 2013. Should she take a different approach? Give her some hints.

Library Miladie Thompson reports that she will not be continuing on next year, but Molly cook will.

What to do about the book loss? She will try to write a report on exactly which books were lost; all board

members are concerned about the mold in all books. Cathy Stone says that she feels the library needs to be

updated with newer books. Discussion regarding this entire subject was tabled until January.

We had a yummy potluck Holiday Party and a silly white elephant gift exchange. Attendance was

almost 100%, with grandmothers, moms, and visitors present. All of the kids were working very hard to fin-

ish their snowmen wall hangings. Mary Levy has graciously offered to teach the kids her famous “pot

holder” quilt, starting in January. Mary came by to explain the homework they need to do for the January

meeting. A fun productive meeting was had by all.

Quilt Show Carol Riddles reports that almost all committees chair positions have been filled. Diane

Klose has volunteered to chair baskets, which will be put together by mini groups, and donations by other

individuals will be accepted.

Opportunity Quilt Kris Cook said she was at the 2nd Cornish Christmas. A little over $4,100 has been

collected for the opportunity quilt. The handmade items were a BIG hit. Should be give the money made

from these items to the library? Any left-over handmade items should be stored, and perhaps used again

next year.

Qui l t Show News

A lot of time has gone into PR work for the quilt show in the last couple of months. I traveled out of the

area to three different quilt shows to meet with the chairman of the shows to introduce myself to them and

exchange ideas. It was quite fun. While there I looked up the venders who have received applications from

us but hadn't responded yet. They were enthusiastic and expressed continued interest in being in our show. I

hope I lit a little fire under them to get those apps. mailed in. About a dozen applications were passed out to

'new to us' applicants and two of them filled out the forms and gave me their checks right on the spot. I felt

so accomplished.

I have visited a few Mini groups in order to solicit ideas, suggestions and help for the quilt show. I was

received with warmth and gracious hospitality. We had constructive conversations, I saw some wonderful

old and new quilts and had some yummy food. It was well worth the effort.

Diane Klose has agreed to co-ordinate the basket committee. Just as a reminder, we will be asking mini

groups and interested individuals to create baskets and bring them to the fairgrounds the day of set-up. This

will be a much less time intensive and burdensome job as in years past. Clearly there will be fewer bas-

kets...we're hoping for a least 12 to 15 contributions.

We still need a coordinator for equipment.

Hope you all are getting some great ideas for "THE FABRIC OF SPACE" challenge. I love the concept and

shopping for cosmic fabrics

DeeDee Brow nel l , Patchw ork Star for Januar y, 2013

Enter two playful kittens: 2-1/2 year old Willie

and 6 month old Poppy, frolicking with myriad toys,

darting under the couch and showing off their color-

ful tabby markings. Recently rescued from Animal

Save, DeeDee eagerly devotes attention to their carnal

needs and silly escapades. Stepping past a fluffy fab-

ric mouse and other feline necessities, I realize

DeeDee’s exceptional penchant for museum-quality

artifacts. Having a poet’s eye for detail, DeeDee play-

fully quizzed me about a special photo: “Can you

guess who this is?” Pointing to a well-dressed

woman (circa 1967) with an 8-year old pony-tailed

girl, she affirmed her serendipitous meeting with

Shirley Temple, a then-candidate for congress!

DeeDee admitted, “I was petrified!”

Gracing an entire living room wall was an extensive sepia-toned photographic display of Aunt Lydia’s

personage endearingly referred to as Tootsie”, amidst the rubble of San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake. Her

aunt’s destroyed home had been on the corner of Union and Polk Streets. DeeDee proferred an inscribed gold

nugget pendant commemorating her aunt’s home there.

DeeDee’s home was brimming with vintage ephemera such as Grandpa’s framed receipt for a brand new

Buick for $4,675.00 in Aril of 1963. Ornate mirrors, credenzas, shelves and cabinets reflected her impeccable

taste with the authenticity of antiquity. Unsurprisingly, DeeDee had once worked in the antique business.

Philanthropic pursuits have always captured DeeDee’s time and interest. To date, she has logged 95f

“walker bags”, designed to assist those with minimal mobility to carry their belongings. Drop-In and Quilt is

her favorite Guild activity. Devoted and steadfast, DeeDee remarked eagerly: “This binder has all my pat-

terns, lending a meticulous road map for precise instructions. She has mastered 30 of Pat Fryer’s patterns,

utilizing pre-cut kits for quick results. She has volunteered to make pillow cases for Kare Crisis Nursery,

helping families with small children navigate emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

As Willie and Poppy continued to scamper and explore, we also continued to accommodate their playful

prying and intrusions. DeeDee’s stash closet revealed a handy assortment of compatible collections. With a

sewing business offering alternations, repairs, miscellaneous projects and sewing lessons, DeeDee is compe-

tent and focused. She has even given beginning lessons in her home for two 12-year old girls. If a student

does not have a machine to bring, she will provide one. J Selling totes and purses at the Farmer’s Market at

Sierra Presbyterian Church has been a welcome summertime boost. Her repertoire of vegetable and lady bug

offerings is enviable. You’ll definitely want one for a stocking stuffer must! Well, gosh, they are the cat’s paja-

mas! Willie and Poppy insist!

General Meeting Minutes

President, Kris Cook is called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Kris thanked Rose Thompson for the exquisite job done and invited the membership to line up for the

potluck.

Announcements

Marjorie McConnell announced that she will be holding an estate sale of Carol Phillips sewing items and

is in the process of sorting through her things. Some of the items and books will be given to the Treasure Ta-

ble in January. The exact date of the estate sale will be announced later.

Kris advises that the PTQG’s next meeting will be held on JANUARY 8, 2013; not JANUARY 1, 2013, as

this is a holiday.

Kris also advises that at the PTQG board meeting in November, a discussion was had to honor Carol Phil-

each participant will be $5.50, and will consist of four (4) fabrics. The rating will be from confident beginner

to expert.

General Meeting Minutes

(Continued from previous page)

Carol instructed all members present to open the “presents” at their dinner place. Those with Silver Bells

in their packages will be the winners for the wonderful center pieces. Carol thanked the “Golden Girls” mini

group for all their hard work.

On tables in the center of the room, there were two tables. Each of these tables contained items. Members

were to “guess” how many, how much, etc., with the guess closest to the correct number being the winner.

We had: How many bells in the bucket, correct number was 130, and the present was won by Marjorie

McConnell. How many pins in the jar, correct number was 1,025, and the present was won by Anne Marie

Curtis. How many foam balls in the jar, correct number was 234, and the present was won by Molly Cook.

How many feet of tinsel in the bag, correct number was 25 feet, and the present was won by Marcia Lyon.

The music game was played with door prizes being passed around each table. When the music stopped,

the person in possession of the gift was the winner.

Rose Thompson thanked the Golden Girls for all their help and read a poem: Anybody, Somebody, and

Everybody, And Nobody.

The door prizes were won by: Sue Miller, Heidi Cook, Linda Reeve, Patsy Hannebrink, Ruth Alice Mis-

chke, Deidre Campbell, and Ginny Peterson.

January ...a good time to join Jr Quilters!

At our January meeting our own guild member,

Mary Levy is going to be sharing her expertise with the

kids....teaching them her famous Pot Holder Quilt!

The Jrs. had a really fun potluck holiday party com-

PTQG 2013 Gui ld Show Theme: “The Fabr ic of Space”

“THE FUTURE ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE.” Arthur C. Clarke

“THE FUTURE IS TODAY! WORRY ABOUT IT TOMMOR!”

For centuries mankind has explored “time” outside of here and now. Aztecs and Egyptians were fasci-

nated by the stars. Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks are filled scientific illusion. Charles Darwin thought about

the extent of evolution. H.G. Wells popularized the theory with “The Time Machine”. Edgar Allen Poe and

Jules Verne wrote literary fantasies of adventurous images of the future. Sigmund Freud’s studies concen-

trated on dimensions of the human mind and drams. 1950s science fiction films drew on Freud’s writings in

“The Forbidden Planet,” monsters from the Id. Americans are forward looking people. We have visions of the

future as seen in our films and TV series. We love technology and invention, as seen in the proliferation of

“pulp” magazines and comics of from as early as the 1940s and popularized in radio programming. Who

could forget Orson Well’s narration of “war of the Worlds”. Movies and TV shows show good and bad vi-

sions of the future, social messages encouraging reform and how we might misuse our progress. “Blade Run-

ner” shows a sobering glimpse of the metropolis of Los Angeles in a post-nuclear holocaust world enveloped

by pollution and cloning. “Mars Attacks” was a comedy. “Men in Black” comedy. “Terminator” not so comic.

The future is also reflected in design of everyday objects. In the 1950’s it was cars, hood ornament, houses,

furniture, textiles, advertisement. Several worlds fairs beginning with The Chicago Century of Progress Expo-

sition in 1933 featured streamlined design with work from Raymond Loewy and Norman Bel Geddes. Mega

structures were imagined to house frenzied over-populations in the form of huge space stations on other

planets and housing towers hundreds of stories high on earth. Films such as “Star Wars” show laser battles.

Futurist study our curiosities to predict future. Are we going to be traveling through pneumatic tubes are to

be teleported from one place to another. When will cars fly? Who would predict that the tiny radio phones on

Star Trek would be a reality today. Are we going to live like the Jetsons or Road Warrior? Even todays pass

ports have planets on their back cover.

What does your imagination hold for you and how can you put that into a quilt for everyone to marvel at

at our next quilt show? Will your quilt be the stunning art quilt that will draw in new and additional quilt

show viewers? I hope to see planets, robots, Planet of the Apes, My Favorite Martian, Mork and Mindy, The

5th Element, Third Rock from the Sun, Buck Rogers, Super Man, Avatar, Battle Star Galactia, The Twilight

Zone, Dark City, The X-Files. And planets!

I am also looking for any props that we might make into aliens for our show. I’m planning on decorating

the props with quilt blocks and fabric. Any ideas that come to mind, please see me.

Thank You
