Well, here we are, in the final days of summer! Seems like just a few weeks ago that we were looking forward to some lazy days by the pool or lake ( or just out on the deck.) Are you starting to think of fall and holiday sewing projects? Our Jamboree, on Sept.14th, will be the perfect inspiration, with great teachers and a lot of fun!

Be sure to join us for the Sept. 3 Guild Meeting at Grass Valley Charter School, where we will have the opportunity to hear Marjorie Johnson speak about and demonstrate her techniques for landscape quilts.

Another important upcoming event is the Draft Horse Classic. This is a venue for selling Opportunity Quilt tickets. In fact, it is one of our biggest moneymakers! Check your calendars for Sept. 19 through the 22. We need volunteers to sell tickets for three hour shifts. Some slots are filled, but many are still open and the Guild needs your help.

Finally, as you may already know, VP Barbara Ceresa has taken on the vitally important position of Quilt Chair for 2014. I will be acting as her Co-Chair on this 30th Anniversary Quilt Show. It is a big job, but one we are very excited about. Unfortunately, this leaves some openings on our Executive Board. Community Services and Drop In and SewCommunity Services and Drop In and Sew are successful because of the generosity of Guild members giving of their time. I want to thank Dee Dee Brownell, Kathy Biggi, the Cook Family, Trudi Ferreira, Sue Fisher, Pat Fryor, Ina Gibson, Kia Hatch, Kristin Herrington, Carole Hribal, Betty Maddox, Githa Navo, Sue Robertson, Eleanor Sagely, Lorna Straka, and Sylvia Yun for their assistance at the Community Services. I know I have missed a few names and I thank all of you who continue to make and donate quilt tops, finished quilts, foley and walker bags, fabric, and Christmas stockings and to those who have provided long-arm quilting services. Through your efforts in 2013 we have accumulated 140 finished quilts, 70 walker bags, 35 foley bags, and 100 Christmas stockings and we gave 10 baby quilts to Nevada County Child Advocates!!! We have approximately 30 quilts ready for quilting so . . . we could use some help with quilting these. We recently “upgraded” the batting to a cotton/polyester blend which is quite nice and makes quilting a more pleasant experience. Quilting need not be elaborate – stitch in the ditch, meander, or crazy “haphazard” will work just fine. Please contact me if you can help. We have only three more Third Thursday dates for 2013. This is important because we need many more quilts before the holiday season. I will have kits for quilt tops, walker bags, and foley bags at the September Guild meeting. 19 September 17 October 21 November Among our projects is making up some “quilt as you go” kits, strip kits, and flannel baby quilts; organizing fabrics; and completing more quilts. Skill Building with Lorna Tiller is offered at the same location, same. Please join us at Community Service / DIS – come for the day or an hour or two; we provide chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter. No need to bring supplies – we also have sewing machines, rulers, rotary cutters, fabric, and thread. Do bring a lunch or a snack.

Fall Home Workshops

September 19th—Faux-chenille: Learn how to layer, stitch and cut fabric to make a fun texture. This technique preserves the pattern in the top fabric, while softening the details.

October 17th—Stack and Whack: Ina Gibson will share her method for this type of kaleidoscope pattern.

Workshops are held at the Seventh Day Adventist Fellowship Hall from about 10:30 to 2:30 on the same third Thursdays as Community Service and Skill Builders. Sign up and receive the supply list at the guild meeting or by contacting Sue Robertson.

2014 Quilt Show

Our 30th Anniversary Is Coming!

That’s right – the Pine Tree Quilt Guild will be 30 years strong next year. We will be honoring this event at our quilt show in May. I know, you may be thinking, we just got over this year’s show but it is never too early to be thinking about what contribution you would like to make to this milestone. I still have committee chair positions open so if you have an area that you might like to lead I would be eternally grateful. The theme for the show is: In the Good Ole Summertime. Think picnic in the park, ice cream socials, etc. I am very excited about the show. So please join in on putting on a spectacular 30th anniversary extravaganza!

Education OutreachIn the 2012-2013 school year my volunteers and I worked in 4 third grade classrooms . We started the year off in November with our holiday project, Snowman Pillows. Then we had a short break and worked at Scotten School making Valentine's Day and Mother's Day Pillows. We worked with approximately 100 students in total. Everything went smoothly and the weather even cooperated (no snow days to reschedule). It can get hectic and noisy working with a group of eight to nine year old students but we always have fun, never a dull moment. I would like to give a great BIG thanks to the women who volunteered to help me, I couldn't do it without them. So Thank You, Karen Mitchell, Susan Hopkins, Mary Ross, Alice Ruth Mischke, Molly and Heidi Cook, Carolyn Christiansen, and Clairie Carter. Special thanks to LaVeta Nevius for cutting all the fabric for me. I look forward to starting up again in the fall. It really is fun sewing with the kids, passing on our love of sewing to future generations. If any members want to get involved in this endeavor just give me a call. Due to health issues I can't do as much as I have in the past and I REALLY would like some new volunteers. It doesn't require a lot just a little time and patience. Come on, Ladies, join the fun!! I hope everyone had a Happy Summer!!!

OPPORTUNITY QUILT NEWS

Well Ladies, we're off to a great start. Thanks to the many volunteers who sold tickets at the County Fair, we made a little under $700. We also earned a first place blue ribbon and a big purple ribbon for best in division. So many, many people commented on the quilt; the colors, the fabric, the applique, the quilting and the overall design. Thank you all who volunteered. I couldn't have done it without your help. Barbara Ceresa and Sally Monesteir took the quilt to the Sutter Guild meeting and made almost $100.From what I'm told the members just loved it. I have 12 more guilds scheduled to show our opportunity quilt. Let's hope they all love it just as much.

At the September meeting I will have tickets for Guild members to either buy or sell. The guild asks that each member either buys or sells $10.00 worth of tickets. So please come and see me at the back of the meeting room and pick up your tickets.

Any member who turns in their ticket stubs and money to me before the Christmas party will be entered into a special drawing for a lovely prize. You are going to want this prize! It's beautiful and it's made of fabric.

At the September meeting I will also be asking for help. I mean HELP!! Please!! Pretty Please! The Draft Horse Classic, at the fairgrounds, is on Thursday September 19th through Sunday the 22nd. I will have sign up sheets for volunteers to sell tickets. This is our BIG money maker of the year and I need help. Shifts are only 3 hours long, standing or sitting and no night shifts.

Then on October 24th Kris Cook and I will be selling tickets at Paint the Town Pink, at the fairgrounds. We are given a booth to sell tickets in trade for donated items for their Silent Auction. Over the past 6 years, Paint the Town Pink has raised over $75,000 for the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation for the advancement of local breast cancer care. I will be collecting donation items; pillows, table runners, wall hangings and of course quilts, at the October 1st meeting.

Thank you all for your help and support. It's going to be an exciting year.

From the Editor:I started quilting in the 80s when piecing was the more accurate term for what my Mom and I did. Years passed and a few years ago, when my sister started quilting again, my interest was piqued. I now have gotten on many mailing lists for quilters. Not a day goes by that some ad doesn’t come into my mailbox. I am interested in magazines, quilting clubs, quilt shops or websites that you find most helpful. I use the web a lot, so I’m not interested in wasting my money on useless sites or magazines.

I’ve asked this before in different way, but haven’t gotten many replies. If you read this and a resource comes to mind, send it off to me and I’ll check it out. Joan and I would both like to have a little more inspiration from you, the members, in the newsletter. Send us your favorite quilting resources!

Thanks, Sue MillerPTQG Newsletter Editor

Affiliate of the Month Christine Barnes Designs

When visiting Christine Barnes website, her enthusiasm and excitement about color permeates its pages. One of our own, each month her schedule includes trips to other guilds as far away as New York or as close as Bonnie’s Sugar Pine Quilt Shop. With each trip she helps quilters become more and more comfortable with the use of color. If you’re unable to take her class, she now has a book out, The Quilter’s Color Club which is available on her website as well as in some quilting shops. Thimble Creek has four of her workshops scheduled over the next year. Located in Concord, it just might be worth a trip! Check her website for details....http://www.christinebarnes.com.

Jamboree 2013 The September meeting will be the last chance to sign up for Jamboree. We have four wonderful teachers, each with something totally different to offer. Jamboree will be held Saturday, September 14 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church. Our Instructors this year are: First is Cathy Stone. She will be doing a bag. Surprise right! It is called Cabo Bucket Second is Diane Steele, who will be doing a Woven Silhouettes Third is Sue Rasmusun, who will be teaching a Curved Paper Pieced Flying Geese. Fourth is Mary Levy. She will be doing her Reversible Potholder Quilt again. Frances O’Brien will oversee the strip quilt race or the 1660 quilt made with 2 ½ strips. It will be combined with open sew. Open sew would be great for those wanting to work on those ‘unfinished’ projects OR maybe pick up a kit from Marjorie McConnell and work on a quilt for Community Service. Once I have received your check for $25.00 to hold your space, I’ll put your name on the list and give you the supply list. My home phone is 477-8499. Hope to see you soon and I want to fill all these fabulous classes! Do sign up – it is the Guild’s gift to you for your help throughout the year. Deirdre Campbell and Judy VaughnJamboree Chairs

consideration. A friend of hers connected her with

http://www.marymarksmysteries.com/

Meet Martha Rose, an overweight, fifty-something, divorced quilter who lives in the San Fernando Valley. She has a habit of getting involved in murder investigations—even when she knows it might put her own life in danger. She can’t help it. She’s stubborn, independent, and likes putting the pieces of a mystery together much like patches in a quilt.

Martha gets help from her quilty friends Lucy and Birdie and a parade of sometimes quirky characters including a certain Los Angeles homicide detective. Read more in the first book of this new series, FORGET ME KNOT, due for release on January 7, 2014.

When you want to take a break from quilting, this might provide a pleasant interlude. It comes out in January 2014....
