January 2017 President’s Message

Happy New Year to all.

I hope you all had a nice holiday. We went to our daughter’s family cabin in Easton Washington for Christmas. It is on a beautiful lake. The snow set the scene for a perfect Christmas.

I want to acknowledge what great job Diane Klose did as our President. Everything is well organized and I will do my best to do a good job. I am looking forward to working with the new board.

So here we go:

There are still some open board positions to be filled:

1. Historian-This is an opportunity to preserve the history of our wonder guild. The historian keeps records of guild events and displays this information in a scrapbook.

2. July Picnic-Shall coordinate the July picnic to be held the second Tuesday of the month.

3. Junior Quilters Chair and Co-chair-This is an opportunity to work with our excited junior quilters (ten to eighteen years old) and help them learn quilting techniques.

4. Mystery Gift-You get to purchase gifts for drawings at each meeting, the proceeds of which are used to purchase the next month’s gifts..

5. Quarter Yard Club-You get to purchase fat quarters for drawings at each meeting, the proceeds of which are used to purchase the next month’s fat quarters. .

6. Quilt Show Co-chair-We need someone to work with our well-organized chair Jeanne Pincha-Tulley. This is a fun and creative job.

7. Scholarship- This job reviews all scholarship applications and with a committee of at least three more members make a determination as to the winner.

******NEWS FLASH*******

Our board meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at Eskaton. You are welcome to attend and see how your board functions. The new meeting time is from 3 to 5 pm. Yeah!

If you are interested in volunteering or have questions or comments please contact me. Our guild flourishes when we all work together.

The first guild member to email Sue Miller at [email protected] with the correct number of snowflakes present in our newsletter will be given a prize at the guild meeting. Good Luck.

Thank you, Susie Hardy 478-0223 [email protected]

Below are the policy changes approved by the Board at the October and November Board meetings

COMMUNITY SERVICE Community Service quilts will first be distributed to Nevada County residents in need. Twenty (20) each of baby, youth, twin, double, and queen/king size quilts will be reserved for local disaster. Thirty (30) twin quilts will be reserved for Foster/Homeless youth. Community Service quilts are not to be donated for fundraising raffles. USE OF GUILD RESOURCES 1. Use of the Guild’s non-profit status will be granted by the Board on a case-by-case basis. A written request to the Board and an oral request at a board meeting are required. 2. Newsletters will be expanded to include a “Haves and Wants” column. This section of the newsletter will be dedicated to quilt related announcements. The Newsletter Chair will edit submissions to fit the space and they will be run for two months. 3. 2017 Opportunity Quilt Marketing

Each year our guild generates revenue through sales of Opportunity Quilt ticket sales. I have been very busy scheduling our 2017 Opportunity Quilt to visit other guilds. The quilt will be raffled at our annual quilt show in May 2017. This listing is all the scheduled showings through April 2017. Several 23 already have a guild member willing to show the quilt. I am looking for quilt members willing to take the quilt to the remaining scheduled guild meetings:

Let's continue our tradition of having a

great selection of baskets. We usually

make about $3,000 for our guild by selling raffle tickets at the

show. I will continue to chair this committee,

but must have a committee of 6-8

people to help. I also need a co-chair since I cannot attend the show

on Saturday.

2017 Quilt Show Honoring Our Quilting ForemothersThe 2017 Quilt Show Board is charging forward. Our next meeting will be February 16, 2017 at the Western Sierra Youth Charter School from 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm.

In January, I’ll secure the fairgrounds for our weekend. Although the costs has gone up a bit, it will be fine.

Karla Rogers, Margaret Boothy and Sue will begin the review of Guild Member antique quilts this month to be displayed as the “Main Event”. They have set up a selection process to ensure that there are a variety of examples of our “Quilting Foremothers.” Check with Karla to find out when folks who submitted an application are supposed to meet with the trio. With the variety of quilts to choose from, this display promises to be an exciting key event!

Sue Miller has been working with a computer programmer to allow us to have Quilt Show applicants enter their quilt and story via a website. This same program will help generate a list of participants for the Quilt Show program, produce the receipts for quilters to pick up their quilts after the show, plus assist with layout. Sue’s efforts will help lessen the work on three major areas of putting the show together!! More on this to come.

I am looking for another Lunch Room Committee Chair, as the person who signed up will no longer be able to perform the tasks. If you are interested in helping please let me know via email ([email protected]) or phone (530-813-2823). You help would be greatly appreciated!

I hope you are working on your entries for the 2017 show. It is your quilts, artistry and creative implementation of the quilting arts that make this show so incredible!

Pine Tree Quilt Guild Forms

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

CS and DIS continue to buzz with activity. Maggie Smith, returning member, took two bins of fabric strips to make beautiful quilt tops in a variety of sizes. I thank each and every one of you who donate time and energy to this worthwhile cause. There is just something about helping others, temporarily in need, that warms the soul. PTQG members are the very best!

December contributions: Twenty quilts, finished and needing binding, were turned in at the December Holiday meeting.

DECEMBER DISTRIBUTION: PTQG Members supported Western Sierra YouthBuild Charter School with $320.00 for equipment and a huge bin and several grocery bags of food. In addition, I reached out and Christine Barnes, in turn, asked Nevada City Methodist Prayer Shawl Ministry if they could help. They generously donated 10 hand knit caps, shawls, and headbands for the students. Food, money, and knitted items were given to the school two days after our general meeting. Anita, Director of WSYBCS, was overjoyed with all of these contributions to support the students.

CS donated 75+plus quilts to Utah’s Place and to Striker House. Both of these agencies provide housing for the homeless. Utah’s Place serves children and adults, Striker House recently opened a shelter for adults.

COMING UP: At the December Holiday Party several members voiced a desire to support the students on an ongoing basis. This makes sense as they need help year round. CS would like to contribute food items for students’ breakfast and lunch monthly. What do you think? If you would like to help, please donate food items on CS Thursday; monetary donations will be accepted at Guild meetings.

We look forward to students at Western Sierra YOUTHBUILD Charter School joining us in 2017 to add to their skills. One or two each month will work on cutting, piecing, and creating a quilt top. Mentors are needed to guide them in this endeavor – let me know if you are interested.

Will you help piece, quilt, or bind or contact agencies? Premade kits; patterns and fabrics; and fun, fabric orphans are waiting to become blocks and pieced into larger tops. Finished tops are begging to be quilted and bound. Help is also needed to reach out to local service agencies that serve those in need and individuals that immediate help. Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact me for other arrangements.

CS LOCATION - CS / DIS is now ensconced in Room 3, Western Sierra YOUTHBUILD Charter School, 12338 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley – one mile past the Nevada County Fairgrounds, on the right. The parking lot is close to Room 3, with easy access. The room has lots of tables for sewing, cutting, laying out tops, backs, and batt.

CS 2017 dates: January 19 February 16 March 16 April 20 May 18 June 15 July 20 August 17 September 21

Thanks……Marjorie McConnell

Maria Brower, Patchwork Star for January, 2017

Snowbirds from artsy Tucson, Maria and Jim are now firmly and happily planted in their cozy multi-level farmhouse in Cedar Ridge. The Voyager RV resort there put her in touch with Montana's, Minnesota's and Alaska's best quilters and crafters. Escaping 120 degree summers or monsoon rains, there was sufficient resolve to gather for classes at the clubhouse in art quilting and all its forms of surface design. Now combining all her Tucson fabric and thread, etc. with her Grass Valley fabric and thread, etc., she is well set with bountiful supplies in one single studio.

Maria is a Laurel Burch afficionado! Bright, bright and more bright is her motto. Bold as Rio's Carnavale, crescendoes of vermillions, amethysts and fiery oranges form realistic landscapes, fishes and birds. Realism in her art quilts is a must. Surface designs may include stamping, beads, paint, dyeing, or pieces of copper and machine embroidery. If there's an unscratched itch, Maria and Laurel Burch will collaborate unabashedly to satisfy. She has six see-through bins devoted exclusively to Laurel Burch fabrics!

Cheerful Maria is so versatile. She once owned a ceramic shop. Molds, decals and findings plus a firing kiln are still in her repertoire. Sometimes husband Jim and Maria collaborate on the forming of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. His newest hobby is making and selling copper jewelry, even intricate and very heavy chain maille. What a team! With a separate workshop building on their property, they have adequate space to indulge and share.

Maria retired from managing the Doris Foley Historical Research Library and still volunteers there. A history buff and binge reader, Maria has authored four books to her credit, each full of carefully documented photos proclaiming Nevada County's rich historical legacy. Local museums and SPD Markets sell her books. Her historical account of Nevada City's National Hotel especially peaked my interest.

On a trip to Hayes, Alaska, Jim and Maria purchased a Bernina long arm frame. Saying, “Jim did that for me! He's such a good husband.” Now, how do we get this thing home??? First by boat, then by truck it arrived in Grass Valley where Jim re-worked it to an appropriate size. Gutsy Maria will tackle any embellishment. Gazillions of

beads, neatly arranged in bins punctuate every art quilt. And, she quips, “One of my goals is to get better at machine embroidery.” All those fancy stitches you didn't know what to do with—well, just ask Maria! Metallic threads are her favorites, admitting “I put more beads on quilts than I do on jewelry.” I did readily concur.

Since giving up their snowbirding travels, Jim and Maria will be remodeling their spacious home. Cabinets full of vintage Pyrex bowls and casseroles remind her of fun garage-saleing days. Delicate brown Transferware from England, shiny sterling pitchers and countless cookie cutters from yesteryear fill kitchen shelves. We both remarked how younger people and our children probably don't value these treasures like we once did. When you chose your husband, you picked out your china and stemware. Scores of art quilts, many celebrating Tucson's desert themes, its fauna and flora, will need to grace newly painted walls. There's much to look forward to. Just leave a wall or two for Laurel Burch's razzle-dazzling eye candy.

Holiday time is nearly over. Hopefully all your holiday projects got finished in time. The start of a brand new year is almost upon us. Now is the time to start or hopefully, to finish up your journey quilt for our challenge.

Our Challenge is “Your Quilting Journey”. The usual rules apply: any color, any size, any shape, any pattern or non pattern, any style, and any technique. I hope you have fun and enjoy the exploration of your quilting journey.

Quilts must be finished for the March Guild meeting. We will be hanging, viewing and voting at the beginning of the evening. Quilts will be taken down at break and will be ready for pick-up after the meeting. Winners will be announced and ribbons awarded.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me, my info is in our directory.
