Guild Meeting Dates November 2016

President’s Message November 2016Dear Fellow Quilters,

We have new members on the Executive Board for 2017. Thanks to Bonnie Lattin-Hensel for accepting the position of Secretary. For the first time ever, we will have the position of Vice President shared by Sophia Day and Nancy Holt – thank you to both. In addition, Pat Gillings was elected as Treasurer, and Susie Hardy was elected as President. I know they will do a great job. As you know the guild is only as great as our members.

I hope the cooler weather and now rainy weather allows you time to sew. I like to get up early and exercise during the week before I start my day. On the weekends, I like to lay awake in bed for a few minutes looking out the window at the birds or listening to the wind and rain. I am a California girl who loves the sunshine. I feel myself getting depressed when I don’t see the sun which is why my husband installed LED daylight bulbs in my sewing room. They actually do double duty: I can see true colors of thread and fabric, and they help me overcome the sunlight deficiency. I would highly recommend replacing some bulbs in your sewing room with LED daylight bulbs. They come in different sizes and even fit into regular table lamps. The other benefit is that they don’t as much in electricity as older non-LED bulbs.

At the November guild meeting we will have a trunk show with the Pixeladies. They will even share some fabric wrapping techniques. Please bring a 42” x 42” piece of fabric to try fabric wrapping. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Keep sewing !! Diane Klose

Guild Challenge

What does your quilting journey look like? Did you start working with calico and now work with

batik’s? Did you start out only using solids and now are into neon stripes and prints? Maybe you

started with piecing and now do mostly appliqué? How about a sampler of all your different phases? Whatever represents your journey from then to now is what we are looking for in this challenge.

If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] or call my phone number in

the directory.

Holiday Party   We will once again have a Holiday Party for our December Guild meeting.  It will be Tuesday December 6 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grass Valley.  It’s a pot luck.  Please bring a dish, serving 6-8, according to the first letter of your last name:  A-E Salad, F-J Main, K-R Appetizer, S-Y Dessert.  In keeping with the upcoming quilt show theme of “Honoring our Quilting Foremothers”, if you want to bring a family favorite recipe, feel free to bring that instead of your designated item.  Include a little sign so we can enjoy the history.  We’ll have some fun games and prizes also.   Please let me know if you’re interested in selling items if we have a Holiday Boutique (email [email protected]).  We’ll include one if we have enough interest. Watch the December newsletter for the final decision.   Hope to see you all there. Sophia

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

At the October General Meeting I had the pleasure of talking to Susan, a new quilter and Guild member. She is familiar with sewing and her machine and looking forward to participating in CS to learn the “ins and outs” of quilting.

Where do CS quilts go? CS quilts have always been designated for county emergencies and residents in need first. Pine Tree Quilt Guild members recently reaffirmed this. Nevada County has not escaped disaster – recall the 49’er and Trauner fires. Another is in our future.

Will you help piece, quilt, or bind? Premade kits; patterns and fabrics; and fun, fabric orphans are waiting to become blocks and pieced into larger tops. Finished tops are begging to be quilted and bound. Whether you are new to quilting, want to help, or help people in our community – CS is the place to be – supplies, assistance, and skill building “classes” are provided. Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact me for other arrangements.

NEW LOCATION - CS / DIS has moved to Western Sierra YOUTHBUILD Charter School, 12338 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley – just past the Nevada County Fairgrounds, on the right. The parking lot is close to Room 3, with easy access. The room has lots of tables for sewing, cutting, laying out tops, backs, and batt. Remaining 2016 dates:

November 17 December – NO CS

I am an email or phone call away if you know, or hear, of individuals or families in need Thanks,

Marjorie McConnell

President's Quilt Blocks

At the end of last year I was presented with a stack of quilt blocks made by members of the guild in appreciation for my term as president.  The blocks I received warmed my heart, since they were a token of the thoughtful, friendly, and caring members of the guild.  When the quilt is completed, it will be a lasting reminder of value of my efforts to serve the Guild, as well of the individuals who contributed blocks.               It is now time to honor our current Guild president, Diane Klose, and to show our appreciation for all she has done over this year to run the Guild (this is no small task, I assure you).  Guild members are now being asked to make for her a quilt block of her choosing.  I asked her about her preferences and here they are:    Block style:  4 patch   Fabric style and colors:  French country style in blue, yellow and white   Finished dimensions:  9½" by 9½"   How to construct:              1.  Cut out four 5" squares of fabric             2.  Sew two squares together              3.  Sew the remaining two squares together             4.  Sew the two sets together to make one 4-patch square              5.  Sign your name in the lightest colored square   I will have a sample at our meeting.  Please turn them in at one of our next three meetings (Sept, Oct, Nov).  They will be presented to her at the December meeting.   Any questions?  Email me at [email protected] or call me at 530-263-3575.

 Thanks! Kate Grant, Past President

Patchwork Star for November, 2016 Ginny Lee Ginny is the consummate queen of risk and reward. Bursting with innovation, she does not lack for infectious enthusiasm. She quips: “What can I say; I grew up in Berkeley!” Hanging out with professor Mom on the UC Campus all those formative years gave Ginny permission to be a Renaissance women, a zealous leader, yet convincingly playful. Additionally, Grandma was a professional seamstress in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake. Growing up, Ginny distinctly remembers zillions of straight pins piled high in a rusty coffee can. Ginny sewed her own clothing in Junior High and High School, subsequently tackling her Senior Ball dress and her own wedding dress.

Circa 2002, “I got into proper quilting after a visit to Thimble Creek.” Living in Lafayette for many years, Ginny belonged to the Diablo Valley Quilters. Here she befriended Sandy Klopp (of Dear Jane fame) and entered a black and white themed contest. Her first art quilt sporting a band of humorous cows won the “Knock Your Sox Off” award!

“I see myself as a facilitator, not a dictator.” Ginny has always enjoyed small groups, the camaraderie and sharing of ideas. She was instrumental in starting the “Bias Babes” mini group, later morphing into the “Arty Chicks”. She still keeps in contact with these Diablo Valley quilters. Dyeing, painting, surface design and embellishment are Ginny's passions. Researching books, analyzing processes and engaging in scientific assignments are part of her learning process. “I celebrate diversity”, Ginny states emphatically. Success is more about progress than perfection. We each take away differing feelings and emotions from our craft. Ginny explores different tools to promote creative ways. Her broad repertoire includes soft sculpture and whimsical pin-making. Full of bounce, Ginny is fun to be around.

Her Juki sewing machine must be a workhorse! I counted 38 large labeled see-through bins of fabrics. But, I hadn't even been to the basement yet. Oh, boy! Keeping everything, Ginny pointed out a nice quality red corduroy she bought when she was in her 20's! A piece of her Mom's wedding dress has permanent residence woven into a modern fabric bowl! Yes, Ginny is a true visionary. Throw nothing away for there will be a need. And, with all her enthusiasm for small groups, the sharing of talents and mini retreats for Bay Area friends, Ginny is bursting with ideas to share. A class with Ginny will not disappoint.

Rubbing shoulders with luminaries like Phil Beaver, Marijan Kluepfel, Judy Mullen, Alex Anderson and Sandy Klopp have promoted her creative process aplenty. Her textural kingdom includes cut velvets, cheesecloth, laces, on and on. If it doesn't move, she will dye or paint it! Tubs, pouring containers, frames for dyeing, tables for many participants and other paraphernalia are at the ready. She has the perfect set-up for the salt process, ice dyeing or screen printing.

“My color preference is in patterned fabrics, not plain ones. Pairing complimentary colors excites me!” Lusty hues, magentas, vermillions and fuchsias reign in her stash. Scale, value, balance and positioning have been carefully studied. If you are interested in dyeing fabric, I suggest you hook up with Ginny, a real visionary in our midst, pitching oodles of panache.

No wonder the plaque in her colorful sewing studio says: “Dull Women Have Immaculate Homes”. You will be rewarded by getting go to know Ginny Lee.
