Meeting Location Day of the Month & Time February

We haven’t received enough rain to officially get us out of drought conditions, however, there may be a silver lining in the clouds: what better to do on a rainy day than sew or quilt. Maybe finish up some UFO’s or perhaps start something new.

In the January President’s message, I asked for volunteers to fill a couple of vacant board positions and am excited to announce that new member Raedean Kidwell has agreed to be an apprentice to Heidi

Emmett to help with the Programs for the Guild. I know she will do a great job and is very enthusiastic!! No one actually stepped up to do the Opportunity Quilt Marketing, so I have accepted that position. It actually is pretty fun, contacting other guilds to schedule our Opportunity Quilt to visit their meetings. I found one guild that posts on their website who is visiting them and when. You should be able to see something similar on our website very soon!

Anne Wilson is the chair of Home Workshops and is busy planning some very exciting classes for the year. Please support her and the guild by either attending a class or volunteering to teach a technique or pattern or something else.

Thank you…. Diane Klose President Pine Tree Quilt Guild

HOME WORKSHOPS 2016

*** JANUARY 28 *** *** FEBRUARY 25***

NEW YEAR, NEW LOCATION, NEW DAY Home workshops are a benefit of membership – all classes are free, the space, irons, ironing boards, are provided for our use, we learn a new project and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow members. We will meet at the LDS Church, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City (exit from Hwy 49 to Gold Flat, Hollow is at the north-east side fronting on the freeway, next to Hooper and Weaver). THANK YOU Nancyan Tracy for arranging the location! Note that this is a no smoking – no coffee site.

Please join us on the 4th Thursday of most months! (No meetings April, November, December) Signups are required; a supply list available when signing up. Times: 9:00 room opens for setup, classes start promptly at 9:30, ending at 2:30. Bring a bag lunch; there is a microwave we can use.

January 28 – “SELVAGE MANIA” – Kathy Biggi will provide hints from her experiences working with what most quilters throw away……selvages! Bring your selvages to class and go home with an armchair pincushion and an obsession for selvages. Yes, she has purchased fabric just for the selvage!

February 25 – “MUG CADDY” – Diane Klose will teach us how to make her adorable Mug Caddies. These are wonderful to have right by your sewing machine to hold all the scissors, seam rippers, pencils, etc., that we all want sew handy! There is bias binding on the caddy and Pam Hall will be showing us a slick way to make continuous bias binding, for use on this project and also for quilts.

To sign up for Home Workshops or if you have any questions, please contact Anne Wilson at [email protected] or 274-1290.

QUILT SHOW NEWS AND NEEDS

QUILT SHOW 2016

Quilt Show 2016 is well underway. There are a few changes. One to take note of is that members entering a quilt will not receive a free pass to the show. Why? Most members also work a shift, or more, and receive free entry into the show.

Quilt Show Sign Up: This is OUR SHOW and we need all available hands to make the show the spectacular success it has been. Sign-Up at the February meeting for one or more Committees – Baskets, Community Service, Country Store, Gate, Equipment, Hall of Honor, Information Booth, Judging, Lunchroom, Quilt Entries, Set Up / Take Down, Silent Auction, White Glove and there are a few more. Shifts are generally two hours. Many hands make light work.

Quilt Show Meeting: February 9th, noon to 3:00 pm at Eskaton, 49’er room.

COUNTRY STORE – Kathy Biggi and Molly CookWE NEED YOU ! for the Country Store....without vendors and "stuff" we can't have a successful Country Store. For so many people who attend the quilt show, Country Store is one of their favorite first stops.  Let's not disappoint them.

You don't need to have boxes and boxes of items to sell. Selling just a few items you no longer need could yield enough money for you to buy a few yards of new fabric.....what a deal!  And, the guild profits from the 15% you donate from your sales. If you do not want to be a vendor, but have items you would like to "clean out"........you can donate them to Community Service.  We will sell them under our vendor number "50".  The money will be used to purchase items needed for Community Service.  Contact Marjorie or Kathy.

The sign-up packet is $1 (to cover the printing costs).  We will have the packets available at Community Service, Home Workshops, and General Meetings.

Does anyone have portable clothes racks we could borrow for the Country Store?  Please let us know.

SILENT AUCTION – Diane Klose Are you wondering what would be appropriate for a Silent Auction donation? Some examples include bags, table runners, small quilts and wall hangings. This year we are asking for your input on how much to start the auction. This year we are requesting that the donator give us a starting bid amount which will include the cost of materials.I am ready to accept donations at the general or board meetings. You could also call, and arrangements can be made for your donation to be picked up. We truly appreciate your participation in donating your homemade creations.

Opportunity Quilt Marketing Diane Klose

I am scheduling the Opportunity Quilt to visit as many guilds that have room for us through 2018. In addition we plan to display and sell tickets for the 2017 Opportunity Quilt at the Nevada County Fair in August, the Draft Horse Classic in September and the Country Christmas Faire in December.

There will be sign ups for several future showings of the Quilt at the general meetings in the coming months. You are encouraged and welcome to sign up as soon as you can.

Quilt Show….continued

Baskets Jeanie Ferguson

It's that time of year. Work your creative juices overtime!. We need baskets for our upcoming quilt show. It's never too early to start! Mini groups, you are always so generous with your baskets and I'd like to call on you to do it AGAIN! Individual contributions are always welcome, and affiliates who are in the guild, we'd love to receive baskets, gift cards or whatever you would like to contribute. I will be available for individual donations at the March and April meetings. For COMPLETE BASKETS please plan to deliver them to me at my home, 232 Bennett Street, Grass Valley. Call first. The deadline to receive a basket is April 1st! Please include a list of the items in your basket and its theme/name. For those of you doing partial baskets, we love them as well, but get those to me by March 15th.

E-mail me at [email protected] if you have questions or call me at 272-7349. I would like to know ahead of time if you are going to be submitting a basket so we can plan for space at the show.

I'm excited about our show and hope you are as well. Thank you, Jeanie Ferguson, Chief Basket Case.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Community Services has MOVED! On a recent, very wet day, Kathy Biggi, Ina Gibson, and I moved our supplies to our new “digs” – Crafter’s Corner, Eskaton Village. Our work space is smaller and it will take us a month or so to really settle in. We look forward to the cozier space. Please join us there on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.

KATHY’S KITS – First Annual CS Block Party continues. Kathy has made kits with a variety of fun fabric left-overs that will make 10-inch or larger blocks. Simply sew precut pieces together into a block and turn them in to CS. As the finished blocks accumulate they will be assembled into tops for baby, lap, or twin size quilts. How easy is this?

Graduating FOSTER YOUTH – we are seeking 12 teen-age quilts and pillowcases by May 10 for the 2016 graduates. A generous twin or a double size should keep them cozy as they go out on their own. If you would like to make a mesh tote, please let me know and I will have supplies ready. These were a great hit with the “kids” last year, and it’s a great “twofer” – we can pack the quilt/pillowcase and they have something to tote laundry or other items.

2016 CS DATES – third TUESDAY at ESKATON, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.January 19 9:00 – 1:00 February 16 March 15April 19 May 17 June 21July 19 August 16 September 20October 18 November 15 December – NO CS

Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me. If you know of someone who needs a quilt, please contact me with the details.

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

NEEDED: AWARD WINNING QUILTS

We have the opportunity to do a small quilt show at The Center of the Arts in mid-March as an advertisement for our annual Quilt show.  We thought it would be nice to highlight previous ribbon winning quilts.  If anyone is willing to show their ribbon winning quilts from March 15-April 2 at The Center of the Arts, please email Sophia at [email protected].

Holiday Challenge

Holiday Challenge 2015 wrapped up last week, and it was a tremendous success!  Lots of beautiful quilts were given out, workmanship admired, and a yummy pot luck lunch was shared! Everyone had a wonderful time!  Now it's time to start Holiday Challenge 2016!

The rules are simple.  You bring at least (3) half-yard cuts of fabric in a brown paper bag with your name inside.  I trade bags around with other participants.  We each take those bags home and will make a quilt for each other, anonymously.  You make a quilt for someone with their fabrics, someone else makes a quilt for you with yours.  We have until January to complete this task!  Easy peasy!

If you would like to play along, bring your fabric in a bag to the February meeting, you will leave with your challenge fabrics that night!  Easy, fun, and a good way to stretch out of your comfort zone, and make new friends too!  Hope you will join us!

Mini Group Coordinator

You may ask yourself why join a mini group. Being in a mini group gives you a chance to meet new people,  develop friendships, learn about the Guild, and perhaps learn new techniques. There are several new members interested in joining a mini group. I am working with them to get that accomplished. If you are, also, interested in joining a mini group, please let me know. Thank you, Diane Klose Mini Group Coordinator Chair

Pine Tree Quilt Guild Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for a $1000 scholarship for 2016. Gloria Glenn, Patchwork Star for February

Tucson meets Nevada City. Living here for the second time, Gloria and husband Byron are recapturing their roots in our well-heeled artistic community. A large Native American themed giclee by painter Howard Terpning entitled “The Teachings of My Grandmother” claims center stage in their living room. A young child is being taught to sew a leather mocassin. “Camp at the Cougar's Den” in the dining room suggests an Indian family cooking over an open fire. Carefully chosen art and artists beckon throughout their spacious home. The Glenn's home was a successful show-stopper for the 2015 Music in the Mountains Home Tour.

Nestling in to the art quilt scene, Gloria brings southwestern poetry into meticulous motion. Admitting, “there are so many photos I'd like to do in an art quilt.” With her Brother Quattro 2 embroidery machine, Gloria has fashioned Tucson lore on faux leather with Aztec-like designs surrounded by hand-cut fringe. Water-color paintings of low adobe structures portrayed in lazy saffrons and ruddy cinnamons represent familiar dwellings in their old neighborhood. Large cacti in shades of bottle green and citron yellow complement the landscape. Sophisticated reds and complimentary hues of ruby stones represent Gloria's favorite palette, placing unswerving harmony and warmth 'round every corner.

Gloria would love to take an art quilting class, saying “I need to stop using a pattern. I'm tired of copying.” Her winsome smile convinces you she will soon be heading to Sugar Pine for such an adventure. “I would like to do faces.” She is a seasoned clothing sewist. “When I was in college and going out on a date for the weekend, I'd buy a pattern and fabric to make myself a new dress. I'd make it on Friday and wear it on Saturday!” Gloria did mention she is not shy about tackling complicated tailoring ensembles: wool pants and matching jacket, surely to include a few fitted darts and set-in gussets. She enjoys utilizing her Embird computer processing program for transferring designs on a thumb drive to her Quattro machine for precise embroidery execution. She also employs a Viking Serger when necessary. “I like to do one thing at a time.” There's no mess, no fuss, no gigantic stash in her spacious basement studio. Madeira rayon or polyester threads are for embroidery and Sulky variegated satisfies her quilting. Soft Fuse Premium is best used in her raw edge applique.

Many large bed quilts have been given to family. Equal parts style and substance give more than a hint to Gloria's pristine southwest style. Let not the Glenns migrate once more to Arizona. Let's keep her here this time!

Mystery Quilt

Due to an overwhelming demand, we will be doing another Debbie Caffrey Mystery!  I will start sign ups at the February meeting, and the first clue, fabric requirements, and cutting instructions will start at the March meeting.  If you are interested, the cost is $5.50 to play.  I look forward to your participation!

GUILD CHALLENGE

Our Guild Challenge for 2016 is ‘Forest Fantasy’. I hope you have all enjoyed designing and making your challenge quilts. It is time to finish them up or to start and finish them. They are due at our March meeting. I am looking forward to seeing what you have all come up with.

We will be viewing and voting at the beginning of the meeting. Results will be tallied, and the winners announced after the break. Ribbons will be awarded in the usual 6 categories: traditional, appliqué, creative, humorous, best use of theme and favorite. If you have any questions, please call me at 205-6215.
