We are looking forward to an outstandingyear in 2008 at Pine Lake. While we areconstantly reminded of the depressedeconomic environment in SoutheastMichigan, and while you face the chal-lenges in your own businesses, beassured that our COO Jim Farhat and thededicated Pine Lake Staff are committedto providing an environment, where weas members, can look forward to enjoy-ing our club each and every day.
We can leave behind us everyday chal-lenges and enjoy the camaraderie, friend-ship, golf, dining, cocktails, pool, tennis, boating and social environment. How for-tunate we are. Pine Lake possesses greatcharacter - an expression of our member-ship, our staff, and our management team.
Please welcome our new HeadProfessional, Paul Lehnert. Paul's enthu-siasm, energy and innovative thinking onbehalf of our golf program will be visiblethe moment the club re-opens. I'm suremany of you know that Paul's back-ground included eight years as AP atTravis Pointe Country Club underMichael Areddy. Paul was awarded the2007 Assistant Professional of the Yearfor the Michigan Section. He brings withhim a firm background in customer serv-ice, merchandising, tournament opera-tions, teaching, and junior golf programs.I am also happy to announce that BillyBallew and Jeff Rachar will continuewith us this coming year to develop agreat golf professional team.
Our committee activities form the back-bone of our club. A sincere thank you toall committee members and chairmenwho have served previously for theirefforts and leadership. I'm sure our newcommittee chairpersons are hard at workforming new and exciting strategies forthe New Year.
John Shasky has assumed Chairmanshipof the Membership Committee withSteve Read's new position on the Board.Membership will be among the top chal-lenges for our Club. As Roger Loughranhas so eloquently emphasized, new mem-bers are everyone's responsibility. OurMembership Committee is committed tothe challenge of exceeding last year'sgreat results. Every member's involve-ment in this endeavor will be needed.
Look for new, enjoyable and challengingevents for 2008 from our Golf Committeeand it's Chairman, Jeff Grant. It is notgoing to be "same-old-same-old". I thinkyou will find the golf schedule interesting, challenging and worthy of your support.
Finally, we are fortunate to have a dedi-cated hard working Board. These gentle-men you have elected to represent you, show up for every meeting, are conscien-tious regarding the issues of concern, andtry to make decisions in the best interestof Pine Lake. We always look forward to hearing from you the members. In this regard, look for a Town Hall meeting in the Spring to go over fresh andexciting membership initiatives for thecoming year.
The theme for this year is one of just"enjoying our Club". No major assess-ments are planned for the coming year.Your Club is financially stable and wellrun. I hope everyone enjoyed a fineChristmas season and I wish you andyour families a healthy and happy 2008.It is an honor for all to serve on theBoard and a special honor to serve asPresident.

The 2007 Men’s Fall League Champions were Mike Brede and Eric Clark with 43.5 points.
Flight winners were:
Flight 0 Drew Johnson and Cary VandenAvond +40
Flight 1 David Doyle and Jeff Shandler +36
Flight 2 Todd Lewis and Steve Read +36.5
Flight 3 Kevin Heinl and John Dick +37
Flight 4 Mike Brede and Eric Clark +43.5
This year we had a good
Toughman tournament. The windswere 30 mph with 40 mph gusts,it did rain for about a half hourand the temperature dropped to
about 50 degrees. The golf coursewas set up as par 71 with #6 play-ing as a par 4, and some new teeboxes were created to make thecourse as long as possible. If a
player was brave enough to wearshorts for the entire round, hereceived an extra shot for the
round, and these brave but crazysoles were:

On June 10th, 2008, Pine Lake will host the MichiganSenior Women’s Tournament. Here is a little history ofthis fine organization. Anyone wishing to become a partof this established group should speak to LoisMotzenbecker for the application. You must be 55 yearsof age and have a 32 and under handicap.
Established in 1956, the Michigan Senior Women’sGolf Association was the brainstorm of three WashtenawCountry Club members: Doris Greenstreet, MaryNelson, and Fern O’Hara. These three wanted to offerwomen golfers who might not play at the same level asyounger players, an opportunity to compete in a tourna-ment of their peers. The idea was an instant success.
Eighty-four entrants from all over Michigan competedin the inaugural tournament. (A special competition forwomen of 46 years and over had been initiated a yearpreviously at the Washtenaw Country Club under thedirection of Mrs. Clark M. Greenstreet.)
At the tournament’s business meeting, Mary (Mrs.William) Nelson from Washtenaw Country Club waselected the Association’s first president. Mrs. ReedNesbit, Barton Hills Country Club was elected vice-president, Mrs. E. L. Thrilby of Traverse City, secretaryand Mrs. Frank Bush of Flint, treasurer.
In the 1956 tournament, the field’s Class A groupingincluded 19 women over 55 and a Class B group of 26entrants aged 50 to 54. The Class C group held 36entrants of women between 45 to 49 years.
The age limit for tournament participants was raised to47 in 1958 and by 1960 the limit was 49. Now womenwishing to participate in this annual tournament must be55 years or older. The current Association boasts 265active members.
One hundred forty-four women make up the field eachyear in the two-day tournament that rotates among host-ing Michigan golf courses. Age groupings in the eventdepend on the ages of the contestants; the 80+ group is aconstant.

Celebrating the big 94!Frank Read knows how to do it right!
Blonde BombshellsWhen Life Member Frank Read was asked byhis daughter-in-law Renee what he wanted for
his 94th birthday he couldn’t think of anythinghe really wanted or needed so he jokinglyreplied “How about a Blonde?” to which Reneeresponded, “Be careful what you wish for!”
Renee quickly went about the job of grantingFrank’s wish, but in a much bigger way thananyone could imagine. Her first task was tobuy five blonde“glamour wigs.”She then hit thephones in an
attempt to fill them with five willing accomplices. It didn’t take long to findthe required number of females who were eager to go along with the gag.
Early last November all were invited to a dinner at Pine Lake in celebration ofFrank’s birthday. Upon arrival at the club the men were directed to a table in
the Mixed Grill while all the “futureblondes” excused themselves presumablyto “powder their noses.”
Their entrance into the Grill was nothing short of hilarious as the othermembers will attest. Everyone stared in wonder and amusement as five“Blonde Bombshells” complete with feather boas began their approach toFrank’s table, much to his pleasure and surprise. After dutifully receiv-ing a birthday kiss from each Blonde, he remarked, “This is the bestbirthday I’ve had in 94 years…I can hardly wait to see what next yearwill bring!”
Frank joined Pine Lake almost 45 years ago in 1963 and still plays golfin addition to visiting a local health club several times a week. Whenasked what his secret is to living such a long life he quickly stated“blondes and exercise” in that precise order. “Get the blonde, the exer-cise will follow!”

on the outdoor Christmas lighting which madedriving up to the Club look like a “WinterWonderland”. Compliments go to Mr. VernDeaton, our maintenance supervisor, and to Mr.Terry Poley, our golf course superintendent andtheir staffs for constructing the beautiful display!
During the club shutdown in January andFebruary, our department heads will be busy atwork. Menus will be updated, schedules forevents will be planned and extensive cleaning, repairs and painting will take place. This is alsothe time when most of the staff will enjoy a muchdeserved time off.
2007 was an excellent year for Pine LakeCountry Club as was reported at our AnnualMeeting. However, Michigan continues to experi-ence difficult economic times which are keenlyfelt in the private club business. Therefore, 2008will bring many challenges for us so we will focusa great deal of energy toward retaining currentmembers and recruiting new ones. In doing so,we especially need the help of our membership inthis endeavor. The Membership Committee, chaired by Mr. John Shasky, is busy working onplans for promotions to have in place by the endof February. Last year’s Preview Program waswell received and brought in 16 new member-ships. We hope to exceed that number this yearwith your help and through innovative approachesthat will spotlight PLCC as the most desirablefamily club in the metropolitan area.
In closing, we look forward to serving youagain beginning on Friday, March 7th. As always,it is our privilege and pleasure to serve the finefamilies of Pine Lake Country Club and the bestto you and your loved ones for 2008.
