PETER’S PENCE SECOND COLLECTION TODAY!

Thank you for your generosity! The faithful’s offerings to the Holy Father are destined to Church needs, to humanitarian initiatives and social promotion projects, as well as to the support of the Holy See. The Pope, being Pastor of the whole Church, is attentive to the material needs of poor dioceses, religious institutes and of faithful in grave difficulties (the poor, children, the elderly, those marginalized and the victims of war or natural disasters; concrete aid to Bishops or dioceses in need, Catholic education, assistance to refugees and immigrants, etc.).

PATRIOTIC ROSARY On Tuesday, July 3rd, the Knights of Columbus invite you to join them in praying the PATRIOTIC ROSARY during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Your Abundance at the

Present Time Should Supply Their Needs, so that Their

Abundance May also Supply Your Needs

These words, taken from today’s second reading, highlight the true nature of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. All of us, individually and in our parishes, are abundantly gifted. We each bring to the table a variety of unique character-istics and talents that are used to spread the Good News of the Gospel and bring Christ to others. As our parishes prepare to come together as parish groupings, and as we seek to form and strengthen relationships with our sisters and brothers in the Church, the goal is not for these gifts to be trimmed away and wasted. Instead, we are called to work to unite the many ways we seek to do good in the world so that everyone, youth and adults of all ages, can be support in faith and in life. What can you do to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? What can others do to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? Let us be willing to both give and receive to make our parishes on fire with the love and goodness of God. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION

Faith Sharing for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Re-read in the gospel of Mark 5:25-29 about a woman who suffered for twelve years with a physical ailment, who wished only to TOUCH the cloak of Jesus, which she did, and was immediately healed. We do not have the cloak of Jesus but his very self in the Body and Blood of the Eucharist. Never miss the opportunity to receive his entire Eucharistic Body. He loves to be the healer of every body and soul. The Faith Formation Office will be open intermittently during the month of July. Leave any message at 412-486-5521 or e-mail [email protected]. One of our team will respond to any message within a few days. Sacraments: Grow In Faith Together Children who just completed Grade 2, and Parent/Guardians who were unable to come to the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, may stop at the Faith Formation office for the photo taken as your child received Jesus in Communion for the First time. Grade 7 Youth and Parents/Guardians were given or sent important information about the journey of faith in anticipation for celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation in Springtime 2019. Be attentive to the date when information is due to be returned to Saint Mary’s. FAITH FORMATION FAMILIES of children who attend public schools, use the Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families book pages 94-95. Is there any aspect of yourself or family in need of healing? CATECHISTS and Class Aides will be needed for several groups of young students when the September Faith Formation resumes. All adults volunteering need to have completed the mandated clearances required by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and complete the training prior to September. Contact Rose Stegman at 412-486-5521 if YOU will love to share your excitement of being a friend of Jesus with some of our younger parishioners. The rewards are eternal! SAVE THE DATE, any one of them, if you plan to return as a catechist or wish to be a new volunteer catechist or aide. Miss Rose will like to meet with you for any ONE of these times: 11:00 a.m. till Noon, Tuesday, July 10 or 24, OR Thursday, July 12 or 26, OR 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 29 or August 12. RSVP to [email protected] or call 412-486-5521 to let us know when you can meet in the school Room 23, enter at the back door.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT Keeping God’s Children Protected and Safe To know that we are children of God is to live in complete love, with deep abiding security and the ability to dream, to sing, to create, to laugh, and to play without worry. As we grow older, we face a new reality - we cannot approach all God’s creation with the same trust and confidence. We learn through sometimes hurtful and damaging experiences, that some people reject the ability that God gave them to love and respect other - they ignore God’s call. The Diocese of Pittsburgh’s program, the faithful are guided and educated about the responsibility of how to keep God’s children protected and safe. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Susan Urso, in the Rectory Office, for more information.

Pastoral Impressions from Father Tim and the Parish Finance Council

Dear Fellow Parish Members,

The 2017/2018 fiscal year will end on June 30, 2018. We recently received our Parish financial statements from the Diocesan Financial Services Office. However, the statements only represent our financial picture for the first ten (10) months ended April 30, 2018 of the 2017/18 fiscal year. Nonetheless, we want to share this information as soon as possible.

April 2018 Year-to-Date (YTD) Operating Revenues were approx. $1,077,000. This is 1% higher than our Budget and the same Prior Fiscal Year period. Again, we thank all our fellow Parishioners for your continuing financial support. Operating Expenses for the April 2018 YTD period were approx. $791,000 or 3% higher than Budget, but 2% lower than the same fiscal period last year. This again reflects the continuing positive impact of cost control actions implemented over the past 18 months, including staff reductions and a wage freeze for the staff. Consequently, the Parish had a Gross Operating Surplus of approx. $286,000 or 4% lower than Budget, but 12% better than the prior fiscal year period. The Parish’s school subsidy totaled approx. $254,000. This is $38,000 lower than the Budget, but $4,000 more than the same fiscal period last year. As mentioned in earlier updates, this fiscal year subsidy reflects the Parish’s responsibility to fund the July / August compensation costs of the former St. Mary’s School staff and repayment of the Diocesan loan related to insurance costs for the former St. Mary’s School. Thanks to your support, we were able to cover these obligations from the Parish’s cash flow. Consequently, the Parish had a small Net Operating Surplus of approx. $31,000 for this fiscal year period.

There is additional good news. Cash contributions to the 2018 Parish Share Program through April 30 are approx. $150,000 compared to our $161,517 Assessment. We thank you for your support. Also, the Parish Festival was again a success from a financial perspective. The current estimated income from the Festival is approx. $33,000. This success could not have been achieved without all the volunteers, St Mary’s bakers, and the thousands of patrons who enjoyed the three evenings of fun and fellowship. Thank you everyone. The Parish’s financial results for the April 2018 Fiscal Year to Date period as explained above, are summarized in the following table.

Transparency of the Parish’s financial situation is very important. We hope these reports help everyone obtain a clearer view of our Parish financial situation. We thank you again for your past and continuing support of our Parish and its mission. Please reach out to members of the Parish Finance Council with any questions.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Services, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mystery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the presence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me; O LORD, be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing.
