THE LION’S ROAR
This weekend I am in Panama City attending the World Youth Day. World Youth Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. It is celebrated at the diocesan level every year and at the international level every two to three years at different locations. World Youth Day is a gathering of Catholic youth. It begins with a welcoming Mass, followed by three days of catechesis in the morning and cultural showcases in the afternoon and evening. On Friday, a live portrayal of the Stations of the Cross is presented. On Saturday, pilgrims walk to a designated venue for the vigil service and closing Mass on Sunday. The United States hosted World Youth Day in 1993. Many people testified that they received their vocation while attending a World Youth Day, whether it was a vocation to the priesthood, religious life or marriage. It is also a venue to see the vibrant faith of young people and an encouragement to persevere in the faith together with people from around the world who profess the Catholic faith. I have attended World Youth Day six times: Manila, Philippines (1995); Toronto, Canada (2002); Cologne, Germany (2005); Sydney, Australia (2008); Madrid, Spain (2011); Krakow, Poland (2016). I’m happy to add this one!

St. Mary’s in Sycamore Youth Ministry Program is going to the main campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville on July 12-14 for the Steubenville Youth Conference. The conference is an event of awesome praise and worship, great speakers and breakout sessions, free time, entertainment by Matt Maher, Eucharistic adoration, Reconciliation and Mass. It is an opportunity to grow deeper in our faith and our relationship with God and meet other young Catholics who are excited about our faith. Once again we have seen another anniversary of the infamous court decision in the Roe v Wade case which has afforded legal protection for the deliberate killing of now more than 60 million children in the wombs of their mothers in the United States. What the total number amounts to throughout the whole world is staggering. Our defiance of God’s commandment that we are not allowed to intentionally kill anyone who is innocent and defenseless will surely merit the consequence of the severe punishment promised in the Bible to those who reject the Lordship of the Creator.
There are many things which can be addressed about the abortion situation, but I will limit myself in this column to reflecting on the language we use. The abortion debate is often framed as a matter of “pro-choice vs. pro-life.” This only muddies the waters of the debate, in my opinion.
To me it’s obvious that any person whose intellectual faculties are capable of knowing and evaluating something, and then having the ability to take action on his/her knowledge is “pro-choice.” Only those whose intellectual or physical capabilities are severely limited in such a way that they do not know what they are doing or cannot act physically are “no-choice.”
For example, consider the fact that every person in prison—except those found to suffer from some kind of insanity, or who have been wrongfully convicted—is there because he or she is “pro-choice,” that is, they made choices which led them to their current situation. The fact that we even have such places as jails or prisons is proof that every sane person is “pro-choice.”
The real issue in the abortion debate is not who is or who is not “pro-choice,” since all of us are “pro-choice.” The issue is always pro-choice for what. The object of the choice—what are you choosing?” —is the issue.
Those who defend abortion by using the terminology “pro-choice” may not admit it, but they are making the right to choose an ultimate right and not a conditional one. But reflecting on such an idea shows that it is untrue because we don’t live that way. An example: I exercise pro-choice when I drive my car, and I have the choice of how fast I will drive. If I am stopped for speeding 25 miles over the speed limit, I can’t say to the police officer, “you can’t stop me, I’m pro-choice and I have a right to choose to drive this fast.” Think that objection will hold up? My choice is limited for the common good. There are values which need to be upheld for the common good, even though upholding them limit the choice of an individual.
The right to life is a value reflected in our national identity: the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This is true for all citizens, but for those who believe in God the right to life is found in the commandment that we may not deliberately kill the innocent or the defenseless person, even in the name of “pro-choice.”
