The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lowly Servants Rejoice!

This Sunday we celebrate another of the events that people would like to have seen firsthand. Some traditions say that

Mary was taken into heaven before she died; others that immediately after death, she was taken to heaven. The point was

that Mary did not have to wait for her resurrection; it happened at the end of her life on earth. Catholics have believed this

from the beginning of the Church, because it was thought that God would not let the body that had brought Christ into the

world undergo the corruption of death. But there are reasons closer to home that we celebrate the Assumption.

The second reading assures us that while everyone will someday die, “in Christ shall all be brought to life.” Jesus was the

first to be raised from the dead by the Father, but not the last. Mary in the scriptures is a symbol of all believers, so we know

that God raised her to show us that we too will be raised.

Now some might argue that since Mary was free from sin, she deserved to be taken up, but none of us can claim the same

privilege. But Mary would not say that she deserved it. Instead, she calls herself a “lowly servant” and praises God for his mer-

cy, a gift that God gives to “those who fear him in every generation.” And so we celebrate because we are sinners who have

received God’s mercy. We too are “lowly servants” who can bring Christ into the world through our love, kindness, joy, or

good example.

We also celebrate this feast because Mary in heaven shares the love and joy that Jesus has for his followers. Catholics are

sometimes accused of praying to Mary as if she were equal to God. Actually, we ask her intercession for our needs. But what-

ever you call it, we know that Mary is alive in Christ. We trust that Mary wants to help us in any way she can. She reminds us

that love does not end with death. And so we can confidently ask her intercession for our needs.

Fun Historical Fact About Assumption Church

Did you know that Assumption Church’s original church

building was dedicated on this exact date 129 years ago?

Although our church was dedicated on the Feast of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15, 1892,

our parish was established prior to the dedication of our

original church building, when we received our first pastor in

1889. So much has changed in 129 years, but our original

church building still remains as a reminder of those that

have passed through its doors over the years and continues

to be a welcoming presence for future generations to come.

This weekend we have the special blessing of celebrating

the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The teaching regarding the dogma of the Assumption is that

our Blessed Mother, at the end of her life on earth, was given

the special favor of God to be taken into Heaven, body and

soul. Her body never suffered the corruption or decay that

normally accompanies death. In November of 1950, Pope St.

Pius XII proclaimed the doctrine (teaching) of the Assumption

of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be a dogma. When a teaching

of the Church is raised to the level of being a dogma all

Catholics are bound to accept and believe in that teaching as

a matter of Faith – even if we do not completely understand

it.

This dogma is like a bow on the gift that is our Blessed

Mother. The other dogmas of Our Blessed Mother all speak

to the special role that she has had in the life of the Catholic

Church and all of Christianity. The dogmas of Our Lady are

as follows:

- Mary is the Mother of God

- Mary was a perpetual, sinless Virgin throughout her life

- Mary was Immaculately Conceived in the womb of

St. Anne

- The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into

Heaven, body and soul

Each of these dogmas are accepted as blessings from God

that came to Mary because, as a young Jewish girl, she

agreed to say yes to God’s plan for her and the world. Being

conceived without Original Sin (Immaculate Conception) and

never sinning during her life while remaining a virgin

throughout her life allowed her to be the perfect vessel,

unstained and untouched, to bring Jesus, our Savior, into the

world. Her “yes” to the Angel Gabriel set the stage for the

Second Person of the Blessed Trinity to take on our human

nature through the power of the Holy Spirit within her womb.

Because God knows all things, He knew that Mary would

say yes, even though she could have said “no.” Because she

said yes, God found favor with her and bestowed these bless-

ings on her. After faithfully serving God in this life, it is fitting

that He would allow her to be assumed into heaven without

suffering the ravages of death. There is much more that we

could say and learn about the Marian dogmas. Today, let us

give thanks God for the gift of our Blessed Mother and re-

joice in her glorious Assumption into Heaven!

THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH

The celebration of today’s feast on a Sunday is unusual

on our Roman Catholic calendar. Our observance of the

Lord’s Day is held in such high esteem that few other

feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of

one of the saints—in which the saving power of God in

Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems

it worthy of celebration on the Lord’s Day. Today is such

a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dog-

ma in its entirety: “We pronounce, declare and define it

to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate

Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary having completed

the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and

soul to heavenly glory.” The Roman Catholic Church

never defined any specifics or particulars about the

event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifi-

able eyewitness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals

in Mary the destiny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces

our creedal belief in resurrection of the body. This feast

strengthens our faith, defined last week in Hebrews as

the realization of things hoped for. We find, in Mary,

that realization of what we all hope for, what Paul today

affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthi-

ans 15:22).

Salvation and power have come through

Jesus Christ, son of Mary. Let us pray for

all who flee to God in the midst of their

needs and burdens.

For the Church as we continue to say “yes” to the work

of God in the world, let us pray to the Lord.

For peace in the world and for all who have suffered

under the burdens of conflict, violence, and division, let

us pray to the Lord.

For the unborn, the elderly, and all in between, that the

dignity of their lives may proclaim the greatness of the

Lord, let us pray to the Lord.

For those who are proud and self-centered, that they

will make time in their lives for the needs of others, let


For all women who are pregnant, and for the health and

well-being of the children they will bear, let us pray to

the Lord.

For all those who are sick, for all who suffer from COVID

-19, and for all who have died, especially N., N., and N.,

let us pray to the Lord.

For all the prayers that we hold in the silence of our

hearts; for all our intentions spoken and unspoken, let


O God of all generations,

you have mercy on all who fear you.

Hear these our prayers

and grant that we may share eternal life

with Mary and all the apostles and saints.

FEAST OF FAITH The Shape of the Eucharistic Prayer

Our Eucharistic Prayers originated in the traditional

Jewish meal prayers known as berakah, which were

prayers of thanksgiving used at meals. Over the centu-

ries, the Christian thanksgiving, or Eucharist, gradually

took shape. While in the East the Eucharistic Prayers

(called anaphora) took many forms, in the Roman

Church there was for many centuries just one Eucharis-

tic Prayer, called the Roman Canon (now known as Eu-

charistic Prayer I). Almost all Eucharistic Prayers include

the same basic elements. They begin with thanksgiving

and acclamation. Then there is an epiclesis, as the priest

calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts. Then follows

the institution narrative and consecration, as the words

that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper are repeated. After

the consecration, we remember in an explicit way all

that Christ has done for us—this is the anamnesis, or

remembering. The prayer concludes with the offering,

the intercessions—prayers for the Church, our leaders,

ourselves—and a final doxology of praise.

The reforms of the Second Vatican Council enriched

our liturgy with additional Eucharistic Prayers, including

both ancient texts (Eucharistic Prayer II is based on the

most ancient of all existing Eucharistic Prayers) and new

compositions.

The St. Vincent Monday Night Meals will be served

through the end of August from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

at the New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City.

Meals will continue to be carry-out only.

We are currently serving approximately 150 meals each

week, and funds are needed to purchase food and carry

-out containers to prepare a hot nutritious meal for any-

one in need, free of charge.

There are currently five area churches involved in this

ministry, and we would like to add a sixth church. If you

know of anyone interested in helping for two months at
